Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Entry tags:big bad wolf, dracula

Who: Shane and Vlad
What: Fun times on watch together!
Where: Around the building
When: 11:20pm tonight
Warnings: TBD

Vlad knew that half the building didn't trust him, including the man who'd come up with this ridiculous 'neighborhood watch' idea. By refusing to participate, he would only serve to make them even more distrustful and give them reason to keep watch on his apartment. He decided to volunteer because of that reasoning and because he wanted to keep Helena safe - if there was someone prone to torture wandering around, he wanted to be the one to catch him. Having to be on watch with someone wasn't the most appealing of ideas, but he was involved now and couldn't exactly back out.

So at 11:15 he was in the lobby, a gun tucked in his belt and hidden by his shirt while a butterfly knife was folded in the pocket of his jeans. He wore a simple black t-shirt and sneakers, a far cry from his usual attire but much more practical. He hadn't bothered looking at who was assigned to watch with him tonight, and frankly he didn't care. All he had to do was keep an eye out for the next few hours and then he could get back to Helena, who was safe in P3 with Cain and Abel there to protect her.

He half hoped his partner wouldn't show up, watching the seconds tick by on his watch as he waited.

Shane had checked the schedule before his partner had been assigned, so he was ignorant as to who he'd be spending the next four hours with. He'd brought a gun, holstered under a jacket, and had a slim switchblade folded into his pocket. If an innocent person came running up the stairs, it wouldn't do to startle them into a floor-long fall because he had a KA-BAR sitting on his lap.

He took the stairs down. He'd long since lost hope of any kind of trusting relationship with the elevator, and it gave him the opportunity to glance into each floor as he passed. He expected a quiet night, since people seemed to still be in recovery from the moon, but you never could tell with this building.

He came around the curve of the stairs. He didn't recognize Vlad right away from behind, but as he came closer, there was no mistaking him.

He stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

"You have to be kidding."

Vlad was just starting to think that whoever he'd been assigned with wasn't going to show up, which suited him just fine, when he heard someone coming down the stairs. Stifling a sigh, he turned to see who his partner for the night would be and froze.

There had to be some sort of mistake. There was no possible way he could stand three hours in Shane's company, and he was sure the other man felt the same way about him.

"You are my watch partner?" He really needed to have a chat with whoever had written up this schedule. "Wonderful." Well, there was no use complaining about it - if he refused to work with Shane and left now, word would surely get back to Micah and everyone else in the building. They'd probably see it as an excuse for him to get out of watch duties. "I suppose we will have to make the best of this - unless you would prefer to slink back to your apartment and let me take this shift alone."

Shane was equally thrilled, already thinking about what he could say to get his watch switched. At the suggestion he was 'slink' anywhere he stiffened. "I think I can handle you for a few hours," he said with a touch of a sneer. "Unless you'd rather skip back to your comfortable penthouse."

He leaned against the staircase rail. "So what's the plan, Vlad? You're not volunteering to watch over the building out of the goodness of your heart, I'm sure."

"Oh, I think my penthouse will be just as comfortable in a few hours as it is now." He smiled, full of exaggerated false politeness. Their hate for each other was probably the only thing they had in common, and he had no need or desire to pretend otherwise.

Vlad raised his eyebrows, since he had no intention of telling Shane about Helena or that he was only doing this so it couldn't be held against him later. "How very predictable of you, Shane. Tell me, how well have your assumptions served you so far?"

"Very," he said. He turned back up the stairs. "I think we're meant to be actually patrolling the building, not chatting in the lobby."

How hilarious it was that Vlad seemed to consider him nothing at all like a threat. Just one more annoyance, most likely, a thorn in his side who wasn't willing to buy his niceties. More than anything, he would have liked to show him precisely how dangerous he could be-but there was Boyd to consider, and the difficulties that murdering someone so high profile entailed.

Pity.

Vlad's lips curled into a silent snarl as he followed Shane up the stairs, the temptation to shoot him right then and there - or just tear his damn throat out - nearly overwhelming. Unfortunately he couldn't, but there was always the next full moon to consider. Dracula was more than a match for the Wolf, however large the animal might be. If he could handle the Beast, then an overgrown dog would hardly be a challenge.

The first floor was quiet, and he scanned the hallway briefly before starting up the next set of stairs. His eyes were quite good in the dark, even now.

Remembering what Vaughn had told him about the Witch's encounter with the Wolf, the urge to say something was just too great. "You must have had no trouble at all during the moon," he commented offhandedly, the hint of a smirk audible in his voice. "After all, who could possibly overpower the Big Bad Wolf?"

His gaze was blank when he slid it over to Vlad. Could he have spoken to Vaughn? Possibly. Then again, he had mentioned what had happened to Daniel, who was, he had to admit, the likelier person Vlad might have gotten that information from.

Witches who cheated with magic, that was who could. He didn't say that though, of course. "Everyone had trouble during the moon," he said, brushing off the jab. "Except you, I assume. Convenient. So how many people did you kill over the course of the night? Or have you lost track?"

Vlad didn't need nor expect any comment about what had happened from Shane, but he knew it must have been such a dent to his pride to have been made a fool of by none other than Vaughn herself. It was a shame that Dracula and the Witch hadn't been able to meet this time, but there was always next time. He wondered if that would be better or worse than finding Mina and Lucy.

"How many people did I kill? Why, absolutely none." It was, technically, the truth - Dracula had murdered that woman, and he'd had a hand in the death of the other men. He wasn't going to admit that, nor did he think Helena or Kiki would say anything. This was going to be a long three hours, but as long as he never took his eyes off Shane, it would be bearable. Luckily he'd never had a problem with multi-tasking.

Shane flashed a toothy, mirthless smile in response to Vlad's protest. Sure.

He drifted a few inches closer to him as they came around the curve of the stairs. Vlad smelled like the mishmash of scents most people did. Aside from the usual male scents of cologne and aftershave, though, there was something else. Just a wisp, barely there at all, but present nonetheless. Blood. It was the scent he tended to pick up above all others, and his sense of smell was equipped to pick it out even long after it had been washed away. Old blood, if he was right, and if he could still smell it now then there had to have been a lot of it when it was fresh.

He veered off onto the second floor, glancing around the circle of the floor. Nothing out of the ordinary. "So you just turned the..." he paused, sniffing again. "...Woman. Into an anemic?"

Vlad turned away dismissively, making a mental note to ensure that his next watch partner would be someone far more preferable than this. That Diego character on the twelfth floor was friendly enough, and he thought that he would be able to tolerate and perhaps even enjoy his presence for the three or so hours that they would be patrolling. He also decided that under no circumstances would Helena and Shane be paired together - not if he had anything to say about it.

He had to bite back a snarl when Shane moved closer - even though it wasn't by much, he still didn't like it. He didn't want that wolf anywhere near him, a sentiment shared by Dracula. This wolf was not one under his control, and therefore he had no use for him.

His surprise was only slight, since it was only natural for Shane to have an exceptional sense of smell. "The woman?" Vlad simply shook his head and laughed, a mocking sound not very different from Dracula's. "Really, Shane, you may as well not talk at all if you are simply going to speak nonsense all night." Vlad headed towards the stairs, making sure the other man never left his line of vision.

Shane entertained the efficiency of simply pushing Vlad over the rail and watching him fall. He stayed close to the wall, himself, where he could keep an eye on Vlad as well as the stairs above.

"I'm never going to believe you," he said flatly. "Why do you even bother anymore? Let's be honest. If I could have proven anything about you by now, I would have turned that proof over to the police. You might as well give up the lie. At this point, it's just boring."

When this watch was over he was going straight back to the man who'd posted the schedule and find himself another partner. He couldn't take spending three hours at a stretch with Vlad.

Vlad stopped halfway up the stairs, curling his hands into fists to keep from grabbing the gun and doing what he should have done a long time ago. He turned slowly, fixing Shane with a cold smile. If it were anyone else, they might have been cowed into silence, but this man was different and he expected no less than what he was getting.

"If I thought for one moment that there was even the slightest chance of you proving something about me, Shane, you would be dead." By now the unsolved murders in Romania would have been a distant thought, cold cases to be packed into boxes and shoved onto shelves with the rest. As for his crimes here, well, he knew he had been careful. There was no proof, and considering the fact that Helena was now staying with him, there likely never would be.

"You want me to be honest?" He smirked, folding his arms across his chest. "Perhaps you should try taking your own advice before telling others to 'give up the lie'."

Shane turned to face him, bright blue eyes cold and hard as stones. "Is that so?" His tone was a touch dangerous. He didn't take death threats lightly-not from anyone, and certainly not from a man like Vlad. He did, however, feel a certain sense of satisfaction in getting him to at least admit that aloud.

He didn't bat a lash. "I don't have anything to tell." As far as he was aware, Vlad knew nothing about him, didn't have the slightest inkling of the constant battle he faced in not falling back into his old routines, venting the anger and frustration of the past few weeks on some low life.

"I would not have said it otherwise." He wasn't afraid of Shane, but as much as he would have liked to kill him, he couldn't. The repercussions would be too great, not only in the legal sense but within the building itself. He would lose his friends, the only allies he had, and he wasn't willing to risk that - not on someone like him.

Vlad didn't have the slightest bit of proof to back up his suspicions, and he knew there was absolutely nothing he could do about the matter. Still, he highly doubted that Shane was a regular person, but whatever secrets he had would not be so easy to discover. That didn't mean he was going to completely give up trying, however. "If you say so." The next floor was just as quiet and devoid of activity, and he stifled a sigh. Next time he was definitely making sure he had a different partner.

He looked back up the stairs again. "You're lucky Boyd likes you." Though, in truth, that wasn't enough to keep him from killing Vlad if the opportunity to do so without repercussions presented itself.

It was only natural for Vlad to assume something was off about him, or to accuse him of as much. They had both made it clear to one another that they would be happier with the other dead, and that was not the sort of conversation two normal people had.

He ignored him. Maybe he could do that for three hours-ignore him completely. But no, that was unfortunately impossible to do while still keeping an eye on him.

Vlad gave him a long look but didn't reply, instead focusing on keeping an eye out for anything suspicious while also making sure he never fully turned his back on Shane. If he tried anything, he planned on being ready to react.

It was still a mystery, why Boyd liked him in the first place. She could have told Shane everything she knew, about the women that still haunted his apartment whom only she could see, but she didn't. Instead she thought there was good in him, and even wanted to help him, God forbid. Although she was exasperating and naive and stupid sometimes, he couldn't honestly say he disliked her either.

Still, his hackles rose at the implication that it was a teenage girl who stood in the way of Shane killing him. Did he really think it would be that easy? Emil had tried, and he had even more reason to want him dead than Shane, but he had failed miserably. "Tell me, Shane, why is it that you want me dead so badly? Is it because you believe I am a murderer, and therefore you must be justified in riding the world of such an evil?" Vlad didn't care whether he answered or not, but he was curious as to the man's reasoning. To him, Shane was an annoyance, a thorn in his side - someone who would make his life much easier by being dead.

He looked in on the next floor. Nothing. He was beginning to wish something would happen just to make the conversation end and to give him something to focus on that wasn't the sheer level of hatred he felt for the man walking a few feet from him.

"You've killed innocent people," he said, tone peculiarly flat. The anger was under the surface, but above it his tone was strangely calm despite the content of the conversation. "Children, even. But you hold up a facade of being good and decent and upstanding. It makes me sick. I shouldn't need more of a reason than that. And that's setting aside the fact that you likely killed Emil."

It did sound much worse when someone else said his crimes aloud, he realized. Especially children - although the only children he'd killed were Emil's. It didn't make what he'd done any better, nor did that excuse it, but he was beyond the point of guilt or retribution. As Boyd had said, there was nothing he could do to change the past. It was what it was, and if there was a God then he would likely end up paying for his sins eventually.

"You sound so certain for someone without any proof," he commented; although it wasn't spoken like a denial, just a simple statement. "I cannot help but wonder whether you decided that you had the right to appoint yourself as judge, jury and executioner, or whether it was someone else. I am inclined to believe the former rather than the latter." The mention of Emil's death simply made him laugh.

"You still believe I killed Emil? If I wanted him dead, I hardly would have drowned him in a well with no witnesses to corroborate my story. I am no fool, despite what you may assume."

"I am certain." There were things he'd grown less certain of, lately, such as whether he could be sure of his own motives in removing criminals anymore. Vlad was not one of those things. He didn't comment on who had given him the right to decide Vlad needed to die. It didn't deserve an answer. If no one else was willing to do it, then naturally it fell to him. Or Aiden, of course. Really, he should get the opportunity first.

"I don't assume that you're a fool. I assume that you're smart enough to have realized how ridiculous it would sound."

Vlad realized it was pointless to argue, although he did find it amusing that Shane believed he'd planned Emil's death to happen the way it did. Let him believe what he wanted - for this crime, at least, he knew he was innocent.

"You flatter me." He chuckled quietly to himself as he inspected another hallway, head cocked slightly to the side to listen for anything out of the ordinary. He was getting tired of constantly keeping Shane in his line of vision, but at least after this he could go back to Helena.

"No," he said sharply, "I just don't underestimate you. Flattery implies I have some reason to try to convince you to like me."

Shane had a sinking feeling that nothing was going to happen tonight, that it would be the same hate-choked banter for hour after hour. "Look, why don't you patrol the bottom floors and I'll patrol the upper?" At least then they wouldn't have to stay in each other's company.

"Clearly you have no idea what sarcasm is." Vlad was beginning to find the situation more than a little ridiculous. Shane bored him, and frankly he couldn't do a thing to stop him, so it really was pointless for him to say anything at all. He may have believed that he was capable of taking him down, but that would be the greatest underestimation of all.

The sooner he could get away from someone so irritating, the better. "Fine." He turned away dismissively, resisting the urge for one last verbal jab. This was the first and last time he was ever doing this with Shane.
