Shane had checked the schedule before his partner had been assigned, so he was ignorant as to who he'd be spending the next four hours with. He'd brought a gun, holstered under a jacket, and had a slim switchblade folded into his pocket. If an innocent person came running up the stairs, it wouldn't do to startle them into a floor-long fall because he had a KA-BAR sitting on his lap.
He took the stairs down. He'd long since lost hope of any kind of trusting relationship with the elevator, and it gave him the opportunity to glance into each floor as he passed. He expected a quiet night, since people seemed to still be in recovery from the moon, but you never could tell with this building.
He came around the curve of the stairs. He didn't recognize Vlad right away from behind, but as he came closer, there was no mistaking him.
