Jaehaerys breathed a sigh of relief as he stepped into the cool night air. He was going to be just a bit too glad when some of the nobles finally left the court for their own homes. Of course that would give him less people to keep between himself and his mother, and less excuses to think about having Polonius find him a food-taster until she calmed down. She had refused to come to the feast, citing a desire to sit with her brother this evening. Her anger hurt Elia, but it simply annoyed Jaehaerys: Aeria had raised him to rule, why should she be surprised when he proceeded to do just that? In any case, she didn't need the Tullys that badly. It was simply Dornish paranoia and her need for quick vengeance. He hoped. And in any event, she was being foolish to moon over her dead brother- better to simply stuff a pillow over his face and be done with it. The maesters might have been useless but they were right: a head injury was almost certain death. He'd as like as not be a drooling idiot if he woke, and there were enough sorrows in the world without seeing Myrwin reduced to that.
He shook his head, trying to force himself to stop brooding on his mother and matters he couldn't hope to control. Let the gods to their job, Polonius would say. Footsteps behind him drew his attention an he turned to greet his followers with a smile. "Good evening, my good knights. How do you find the night's festivities? Did I miss anything interesting while I was taken prisoner by the ambassador from the Summer Isles? Lady Lyanora's dress didn't fall off again, by chance?"
