Folk of Midgard, please enlighten me, for I know little about your people: how long is five years compared to a mortal lifetime?

Our puny pathetic lives would definitely miss 5 years ...but I think while like.. REALITY went ahead five, we're still good. So did we gain five years? I have no idea. I need more pot to figure this one out.

But what did you miss in the lives of those you know?

I am much the same. I suspect is thus for many of the heroes who have lived away from Midgard.

How very existential of you.

It depends on what phase of one's life you're asking. An infant grows substantially in five years. The years can feel long.

An elder would feel the same five years go by quickly.

You are kind to clarify. I had not considered the difference between a child's age--or the five years a parent might miss--and that of an elder.

Time is subjective, whether we like to acknowledge that or not.

I would say time is objective but each being's experience of it is necessarily subjective. And of course time can be altered by magic or technology, which further changes subjective experience. Which is why the time jump is so confusing.

You are a warrior with the heart of a philosopher.

The time jump is confusing because our surroundings changed, even if we remained the same. For instance, the bakery I have in the warehouse -- it is a robust, thriving business and the owner has aged appropriately. She has fond memories of conversations we've had, although I have none. When I pressed her for more information, everything seemed more and more vague and she glossed over details.

I find it more intriguing than anything else.

That is a high compliment and I thank you for it.

I am interested in such experiences as well. The magic or technology involved, and at this level there is little difference, if any, has filled in much for those of us who leapt forward in time, or for whom time leapt forward around us.

There is nothing immediately or obviously amiss in it. But I wonder, as I gather you do.

All that matters is that time makes fools of us all.

No matter how long we live, o one-eyed wizard, that is true.

If it helps to put it in context, a typical human life is about 80 years so 5 years is approximately 5% of our life.

That is useful to know, Doctor Foster, and I thank you for your knowledge. Though I think the observation about relative length is also helpful.

I think you have some idea of Thor's age and my own, so you may understand why I find the passing of time for mortals somewhat confusing.

I do. It takes some getting used to. Thor's had to confront human mortality recently so I think he's getting used to it. If nothing changes, I'm about halfway through my lifespan.

Not as young as I used to be!

If I take an apple I'll have more time.

Or are you? I suspect we'd have to ask a sorcerer to know for certain.

And of course the apples will give you more time.

Well, now I gotta know: how long is five years compared to an immortal lifetime? Assuming you guys are immortal, I mean.

As long as we eat the apples, yes. I have lived, as you would count time, somewhere between a thousand and fifteen hundred of your years, if that is the question you are asking. So not a significant fraction for me.

Whoa. Yeah, no. Didn't think so. Do the years blur together for you after a certain point, or do you remember them all pretty clearly?

There are many things I remember clearly but for times when life was routine, much of it blurs together. Is it the same for you?

It is. Sounds like we experience time the same, pretty much. You guys are just on a much--much--larger scale.

These calculations will only lead to me feeling even more ancient than I already do.

You are not ancient! Think of yourself as an elder sister.

Closest thing to ancient we've got. I'm not counting Eir in this though.

If we all behaved ourselves all the time, the healers would be out of work. We keep their lives interesting.
