F E R N ~ Alert
Who: Potted Fern, you and anyone you want to talk to.
Where: Floor 39, Common Dining Area
What: Just, you know, a fern.
Warnings: if you need them, let me know.
Notes: This is a FERN post, ladies and gentlemen, first of it's kind. That means behind the cut are details on what you can do here! (to save space!) please, read on! LJ-Cut text sung to the tune of Just a Girl by No Doubt. You love me, you're welcome.

Notes: Okay folks, this is the first of the Open Fern Posts. What that means is this: did you want a random setting for a log? do you want to be overheard by one, potted fern? Here's a chance! I'll even make sure to start you off with an open for Steve. Treat this as a party-style post and tag into opens. Anything said in this post WILL be overheard by the potted fern hanging out. You've been warned. You can poke the fern, water the fern, but you don't know the fern is not a fern. The fern is just a FERN. Go Forth. Amuse me. *coughs*

It had taken Rogue a few days to figure out the best way to slip into a room and not be caught on camera entering the room. Or exiting afterward. The red-haired woman was still hurting, broken ribs took forever to heal, as did the other breaks and strains, and she was bored. But everyone was being so helpful, and open, and it was a delight. It made every single ache worth it. She still hadn't found Loki, yet, but there were so many interesting things...

She deftly slipped into the Common Dining room and settled down in the corner of the room by another small plant. She'd checked the area out a couple times, and decided that this was perfect and it was just outside of camera range. The bonus was she'd look like she'd hobbled over, sat down, then eventually hobbled out. She'd made a habit of coming here during the day so it seemed like a habit already. She looked around, and once sure no one was around, she focused and in the time it took the breath the Rogue was gone, and a living fern sat on the end table where she had been near, next to a vase containing fresh-cut sunflowers. With nothing to do for a few hours, she was content to sit, as a fern, and overhear the conversations that flowed around her.

The more you hear, the more you know.

"No...I remember hearing about it. I saw a sign in a bookstore, and it was all over Facebook, but I missed it. Maybe I'll look for it now," she added before taking another sip of the coffee. At Kitty's question, she shook her head.

"Nothing all that major. I had a paper route, actually. Good way to get cardio in the city," she said with a little laugh. "I'm sure I was replaced pretty quickly. What about you?"

A paper route seemed like an interesting job and Kitty wondered how she'd ended up doing that sort of thing. "Oh, I was in college," she said. "At Columbia." Rather different from Raven and she felt a little guilty about it, guessing that the other girl hadn't had quite as supportive a childhood as she had.

"Where you living here in New York?" she asked.

"What were you studying?" Raven asked curiously. Inwardly, she had Kitty pegged for an English or History major, and wondered how right she was about that.

At the question, she nodded and glanced towards the window. "Yeah, I was...not really this part of Manhattan, though. I lived in Brooklyn."

"Computer Science and Mathematics," Kitty said. "I'm hoping I can get back on track even though I missed an entire semester."

She wasn't sure how much more she should ask. It was awkward getting to know someone when your shared background was so traumatic and she understood that Raven might not want to think too much about what they'd been through. "Did you grow up in Brooklyn?"

Okay, so her instincts were way off, but Raven kept that to herself.

"No, I...grew up in the foster system, actually," Raven said after a moment. It couldn't hurt to tell the truth, and she did need to make friends if she was going to be here a while. "I think the longest I ever lived in one area was Chicago. I came out to New York after my eighteenth birthday."

Kitty was pleased to discover something else they had in common. "Oh! I grew up in Deerfield," she said. "Too bad we never crossed paths before." Not that Chicago wasn't a huge city or anything, but it would have been cool if they met before all of this.

Of course, Kitty had been lucky to have grown up with a solid family and community and felt bad that Raven hadn't had the same.

"We might have and just don't remember it," Raven said, before smiling. And plus, Kitty probably wouldn't have remembered her since she didn't look like this.

"So is that what you're going to do while you're here? Go to college? Live in the tower?" Raven was curious because she honestly didn't know what to do with herself at the moment.

That was possible, Kitty thought, though she hoped she would remember.

"I think so?" she said. "I mean, I sort of disappeared in the middle of a semester, so I have to make sure I can get back into my classes. But I also want to make sure it's safe. I don't want to risk getting grabbed again."

She shrugged. "For now, I'm living here and I'll figure out the rest. What about you?"
