F E R N ~ Alert
Who: Potted Fern, you and anyone you want to talk to.
Where: Floor 39, Common Dining Area
What: Just, you know, a fern.
Warnings: if you need them, let me know.
Notes: This is a FERN post, ladies and gentlemen, first of it's kind. That means behind the cut are details on what you can do here! (to save space!) please, read on! LJ-Cut text sung to the tune of Just a Girl by No Doubt. You love me, you're welcome.

Notes: Okay folks, this is the first of the Open Fern Posts. What that means is this: did you want a random setting for a log? do you want to be overheard by one, potted fern? Here's a chance! I'll even make sure to start you off with an open for Steve. Treat this as a party-style post and tag into opens. Anything said in this post WILL be overheard by the potted fern hanging out. You've been warned. You can poke the fern, water the fern, but you don't know the fern is not a fern. The fern is just a FERN. Go Forth. Amuse me. *coughs*

It had taken Rogue a few days to figure out the best way to slip into a room and not be caught on camera entering the room. Or exiting afterward. The red-haired woman was still hurting, broken ribs took forever to heal, as did the other breaks and strains, and she was bored. But everyone was being so helpful, and open, and it was a delight. It made every single ache worth it. She still hadn't found Loki, yet, but there were so many interesting things...

She deftly slipped into the Common Dining room and settled down in the corner of the room by another small plant. She'd checked the area out a couple times, and decided that this was perfect and it was just outside of camera range. The bonus was she'd look like she'd hobbled over, sat down, then eventually hobbled out. She'd made a habit of coming here during the day so it seemed like a habit already. She looked around, and once sure no one was around, she focused and in the time it took the breath the Rogue was gone, and a living fern sat on the end table where she had been near, next to a vase containing fresh-cut sunflowers. With nothing to do for a few hours, she was content to sit, as a fern, and overhear the conversations that flowed around her.

The more you hear, the more you know.

Gamora pulled herself up to sit on the countertop. "I still can't wrap my head around this reality rift thing. You set up a whole life here, and then poof, any day you could just disappear? And if you do, is there a different Sam Wilson here somewhere, just living his life working with veterans? Or is there no Sam Wilson at all?"

Sam didn't even try to pretend any of the metaphysics or whatever that created this particular universe. "I think if I understand it correctly, I've replaced the Sam Wilson from this universe," he said. "And I think that his life mirrored mine pretty much until the last few years. But as for what happens if and when I poof? Not a clue."

Nor did he like thinking about it. He was content with the life he'd made for himself here, especially his relationship with Carol, and had no clue if he would remember any of it back in what they called the Prime universe.

"Not that I'm planning on poofing anywhere," Gamora shrugged. "Even with whatever is going on here, this is the calmest my life has ever been." She thought about where she had been before she unknowingly stepped through that rift, about to start a life finally out from under her father's thumb but also completely alone. She wasn't sure how the last few weeks had changed her perspective on what she wanted, but she had no intention of going back.

"I'm a little surprised we aren't making plans for a full-scale assault on Genosha," she said, changing the subject. "With what the survivors we've met look like they've been through.... we should just be putting a stop to it."

As much as Sam understood where she was coming from, he immediately shook his head. "We can't," he said. "That place is... it was hard enough for us to get Loki out. There is no way we'd be capable of taking it on without a lot more intel."

Maybe, maybe if they could gather the sheer mass of people they had to fight Thanos the second time, but even that Sam wasn't sure about. The people in charge of Genosha were smart. "I know it sucks having to wait, but it's the only option." And it really did suck. Especially knowing what was happening to the people being held captive there.

Gamora wondered why it was that when your job was protecting the galaxy, or even just this planet, it never failed that you ended up in hopeless situations where you could never do enough, fast enough, to protect everyone.

"How did you even get Loki out?" Gamora hadn't met Loki, but she had heard about the rescue, given that it happened immediately before she arrived.

"Honestly? I don't even know all the details," Sam admitted. "Most of us were there as a distraction and/or backup in case shit went sideways. Wanda and Valkyrie did the hard stuff." And either of them had been very forthcoming with specifics on what they did. Sam figured it didn't matter since it worked.

He shrugged. "It was fun though. Carol and I faked a fight and she threw a drink at me."

Gamora laughed. She had only talked to Carol on the net, but to be honest, she had thought of the woman as an ally from long before they were on the same planet, if only because Ronan the Accuser hated Captain Marvel about as much as Gamora hated Ronan. Imagining the fierce half-Kree warrior resorting to throwing a drink in a man's face was pretty funny.

"Are you and Carol....?" She paused, "Is it weird that I'm kind of a fan of your girlfriend?"

Sam grinned. "We're together, yeah," he said, assuming that was the question she was going to ask. "And I don't think that's weird at all. I'm definitely a huge fan of hers." She was badass and had saved his life more than once.

No doubt Carol would find it amusing to know that she had fans.

"We have.. had? I can't keep track of whose alive here ...a mutual enemy, and how much he whined about being defeated by her... It was really the best kind of recommendation." Gamora laughed again.

Gamora tried to remember whether it was culturally appropriate to pry into people's relationships on Terra, and decided it probably wasn't. Terrans made most interesting things somehow off limits. Like dancing before Kevin Bacon showed up. "I've been trying to figure out dating customs here on Terra," she said instead. "Peter keeps suggesting movies I should watch to understand this planet better, but Darcy told me that they're all old and irrelevant and I should watch women compete for the attention of one man on something she swears is reality, but seems more fake than the movies to me."

That absolutely sounded like a stellar recommendation and it made Sam laugh. "If you haven't already, please make sure you tell her about that. She'll love it." He liked having a girlfriend who was a complete badass and inspired fear in people around the galaxy.

"Hmm, well, I'm hardly an expert on dating, but I'm not sure that either of those are good ways to figure out dating customs. Mostly because they vary wildly depending on the people involved." Sam could only imagine the lessons she'd learn from something like 21 Kids and Counting or 50 Shades of Grey.

"I kind of thought I had asked the expert, that seems like Darcy's expertise, but that was just more confusing" Gamora said with a shrug. "But i do think you're probably the expert on dating half-Terrans, as the only other person I've ever met who is."

Gamora paused, embarrassed. "This is a really stupid question, but I don't even really know... how did you know you were dating? Is this a conversation I should have had? Because I think I might have skipped that part."

"Darcy is... a little wild," Sam said with a grin. "She's a great girl, but she is definitely her father's daughter." Honestly, how had none of them figured that out sooner?

Sam didn't think her question was stupid, though he also wasn't sure how to answer it. "You know... I don't think Carol and I ever really had a conversation about it either," he admitted. "We just started hanging out a lot and then eventually I kissed her and..." he shrugged. "I don't think we really talked about it until we decided to move in together."

Sorry, Gamora. Superheroes aren't exactly well adjusted when it comes to relationships.

Gamora made a face. She and Peter had done a lot more than hang out or kiss, which made her feel like she should probably be more certain. "I should just stick to combat," she said, "That's simple. Romance is a very complicated Terran construct."

She knew that this wasn't quite true. From her very limited childhood memories, her parents, like most Zen-Whoberians, had been life-mates and seemed happy with one another for all she could recollect of their too short lives. But a childhood raised by the Mad Titan had all but erased what Gamora knew should be her nature.

She picked up the bottle of disgusting green sludge on the counter next to her, changing the subject. "I feel kind of guilty throwing this out. But it's truly terrible. Don't tell, okay?" She hopped off the counter, pouring the juice in the plant. She figured that somehow the nutrients would filter through the soil, and at least the poor fern wouldn't have to taste it.

Sam nodded. "Yeah, relationships can be difficult," he agreed. "The best advice I can give you is to say communicate." Which wasn't very specific, but it seemed to be a common theme among all the advice columns and self help crap he encountered.

"And don't worry, your secret is safe with me," he said. "I'll catch you later."
