From Mordor to the Death Star

Yeah, okay, I don't want to sound ungrateful because I really, really appreciate being resurrected and I bet that's not going to bite me in the ass later, but I'm so not cut out for all of this. I'm the first one to admit I'm a total coward. Ask anyone! Sure, I did the self-sacrificial thing once but that was a total fluke — I'm the Gríma Wormtongue here, not the Legolas or Gimli. Thranduil turning his back on the dwarves when Smaug sundered Erebor? Me. All me. Actually, I wouldn't even be there — at least that guy showed up to see what was going on.

[...]

What I'm trying to say is: Somebody made a huge mistake bringing me here, and I'm totally going to mess this up. Do not pass go, do not roll for initiative, do not depend on me.

filtered to aziraphale.

Thanks for yesterday. And sorry for getting snot on your fancy handkerchief. Jane Austen always made it sound nice, not [...] you know.

Well, I haven't seen a xenomorph or a predator, so I think you might be safe to just hang out and enjoy the ride? Bill the pony did well for himself. I'm sure you will, too!

Man, if you saw one, you'd be dead. [...] And I don't know if comparing me to a pony was the best move, but you know what? Points for creativity.

Sigourney Weaver was in like 4 of those movies. Totally could be alive. And what's wrong with Bill? He's a very good pony! He has a good life!

And who else survived that long? You could be the Sigourney Weaver, dude, but there's only one Final Girl for a reason. I'm more the dies-in-the-beginning-to-raise-the-stakes type.

Look, I like Bill as much as the next geek, but at least he got to stay safe for most of the story.

Laurie Strode. I'm pretty sure she's going to just stab Michael with knitting needles when they're both in the retirement home and he's chasing her with an electric scooter. Besides, unless they put you on one of their fighting teams, I doubt anyone's going to ask you to fight. There's no shame in surviving instead of throwing yourself into danger. As long as you're not going to betray anyone, it's ok to just be at this point.

This is a new story, and you have higher thinking on your side. That means you can choose if you want to stay safe or not. Make the choices that best suit you and who you want to be now that you're here. And like I said, no shame in not wanting to run head first into danger and choosing to be safe. Especially if you're out of your depth.

Is she the chick from Halloween? I'm gonna be honest, man, I skipped that one. There's no WAY I can handle slashers It isn't betrayal if I'm being upfront about my complete and utter lack of bravery.

That's a relief at least. We're not all built to be Samwise.

Yea. And no it isn't so you're doing a lot better than you could be. And so long as you don't sell anyone out if you're in that kind of position you're good to stay where it's safe. Anyone who thinks otherwise can learn meditation and calm down.

No and that's ok we're not.

No. Just thinking of things like Star Wars where it happens and it's not cool to do.

You mean the dude who sells everybody out to Darth Vader? I thought he got redeemed. Not that it was cool or anything initially, but, you know. Complicated storylines and morally gray characters — when done well — can be compelling.

Ain't that the truth.

Not planning to go down the same road, for what it's worth. I wouldn't even want anything from the dark side. Seems like a bad time all around.

That's good to know. I don't know if the Dark Side would be worth it but a lightsaber would be cool.

And if you ever needed or wanted to learn self-defense so you can keep yourself safe if things get weird here -- which they tell me it does get weird, so I guess it's really possible it could get weird even if you're not looking for it -- I think there are people who could help with that. Not sure who, but there's enough people that someone's got to be willing to teach anyone wanting to learn.

I'm more of a danger to myself and others with a weapon, but I'll keep it in mind. Maybe some hand-eye coordination 101 training will undo all the damage from years of PE.

Thanks, man. I appreciate the thought.

All the more reason to eventually look into it. Even if all it is is getting better with balance and hand-eye coordination and stuff.

Welcome.
