There was nothing he could do, and that hurt most of all.

Reeve had only heard about the plan to drop the plate a few moments ago, overhearing Reno's voice as they passed in the hallway. For a moment Reeve had frozen in shock, not wanting to believe that something this horrific was anything more than the Turk shooting his mouth off again. Several frantic phone calls soon had him throwing up in his office trash can.

After he washed out his mouth in the bathroom, he went to find a place in the Shinra building where he could watch it happen. That was his penance for not being able to save anyone. So he stood in silence, hands clenched at his sides, tears running into his beard, and watched the plate kill untold thousands of people as it crashed down.

It was then that he decided he hated, and that he had to do something to make it right.

“Zidane!” It was more a squeak than a whisper, barely worthy of a queen, and Garnet blushed.

A low chuckle deepened the color in her face. “We have plenty of time before the court comes in,” he breathed before gently licking the outside of her ear.

She gasped at the sensations and squirmed closer to him despite herself. “But someone might show up early,” she finally managed to whisper, completely ignoring the fact that she was nuzzling his neck.

His tail was softly wrapped around leg just above the knee, lifting the dress so that his hands could roam freely. When it brushed her hip, she gave up all pretenses at protesting and kissed him until they were both breathless.

Later, during a usually dry court function, one noble whispered to the other how wonderfully colored their queen was.

He was painfully beautiful.

As Cloud let himself be picked up by power alone, Black Materia held in his hand, he found he could finally admit that to himself. Sephiroth floated above them all like a god: beautiful, terrible, and frightening despite being trapped by the mako crystal.

His beautiful master.

The one who killed him, again and again.

Cloud handed Sephiroth the Black Materia again, pushing through to the coolness underneath, not daring to touch. He would die, they would all die, but Sephiroth, who opened his eyes and smiled, beautiful, as the world crashed, and killed him again.
