Area 53 In Character

I know what they said, but I can't be here.

So this is different. Anyone care to tell me what's going on and how in the world I ended up in this place? Because this is seriously not cool.

I'm bored. This is not usually good for other people.

So I see there are quite a lot of new faces, and perhaps I should just introduce myself to save the trouble. My name's Ianto Jones and you'll find me at the Public Library. If you didn't know about it, now you do. Feel free to stop by, but do be careful with the books? It's been enough of a hassle getting things actually organized.

Also if you have anything that is overdue, please bring it in some time this week. We're missing a few texts and, unfortunately, whoever was manning the records in this place didn't keep quite as good a track as to who checked out what book and when as I'd like.

Oh, and don't touch the coffee machine in the back room. If you break it, you won't like the consequences. Not that anyone but staff is aloud back there anyway, but that does go doubly for fellow staff.

You won't like what I do to your coffee.

Oh, before I forget. Marius: left overs or takeout? Just so I can be certain what to expect in the fridge.

Ugh. I hate school. Why do I have to attend this thing at all, ever? It's so boring. Momma stopped sending me to school ages ago.

Hmph.

Maybe I'll just sneak out of class on Monday....

Can we just do away with school? I'd love that. Then I can play all day long and do whatever I want! Whose with me?

I'm only going to ask this once, and only once and I expect a positive answer.

Welcome to Area 53. I have noticed there's been a number of new arrivals here over the past few days.

For those who don't know me I'm Jenny Smithsonian and I'm the 'Mayor' of this town.

A few things for you to know if you haven't already been informed of it.

1. Unfortunately there's no way for you to leave. Our scientists are working on it. They have been for the past fifty years or there abouts. Unfortunatley nothing is known about how you arrive.

2. In terms of leaving some people do but as above we don't know how.

3. It is recommended that you try and make a life for yourself here. There's people who have been here (besides me) since we first opened in 1963. Many of the older refugees have settled and started families of their own

4. We should have everything you would need here. If you aren't sure where something is we are happy to help you find it. We have schools, a college that offers number of courses and various places of employment. We also have a park, community centre (where the Halloween party was held), a local pool, movie theathre, bar etc.

5. Magic is real. People have come here from worlds where magic exists. Yes, this might confuse some of you but it is true. Powers vary from people who need a wand, people who can shape shift and people who can fly.

6. If you need any assistance at all please come and talk to me either here or one of the staff at the Government building.

Seriously, if some kind of magic or power or whatever is going to kidnap me to different towns, couldn't you have sent me back to the one you just kidnapped me from? Why send me home to go through all of that trauma and then bring me to a completely different world?

Seriously?

On Halloween?

Every year on Halloween, Area 53 hosts an all age party in the Community Centre. Starting at 6pm there are various competitions include 'best costume, scariest costume etc'. There are various games to be played, finger food is provided as well as soft drink. The children have the opportunity to go trick and treating supervised by a group of adults. From 10pm when the children leave, the party turns into an 'adult' party with dancing, alcohol provided etc. ( click to see the room decorations )
