Sweethearts Dance

WHAT: The Annual Sweethearts Dance
WHO: Current 6th and 7th Years, Hogwarts alumni from 1994 to 1997.
WHEN: Sunday, 5:00PM
WHERE: Hogwarts, Great Hall

The Great Hall is over-the-top but luckily not a deluge of pink. Flitwick and McGonagall charmed and transfigured things to smell sweetly, sparkle, glow in soft pinks and reds, and give a general romantic feel. Think the Yule Ball, where there are round tables set up around the perimeter and an open dance floor. There is an eight-piece orchestra that takes requests, giving contemporary music, even, a classical spin. There is food galore -- mostly sweets but some savory dishes as well. Rose-water punch and strawberry ice cream. Blackberry apple cider. Chocolates. Cakes. Customizable, charmed candy hearts are available to give to your date or your best mate. There are some WWW Valentine's pinwheel fireworks overhead. If you can imagine it, it's happening.

Feel free to comment below with your character's clothes, date, anything of note that happened. Also, feel free to enjoy your own threads or reactions or whatever. Really, have fun.

He was overcome with how very very small she seemed. Oliver wasn't an overly tall man, but he was imposing in his burliness, and he was fairly certain he could have easily picked her up with one arm and carried her around with ease. The thought brought a little laugh to his lips, and he shook his head even as he shook her hand. "You're even smaller than I anticipated," he said as he did so, "but you're also a good deal prettier." He gave the compliment smoothly, and was surprised at how at ease he felt.

"Well, nice to finally meet you Danielle, after so many random comments. Am I disappointing? I'm afraid rumors about the size of my head were greatly distorted, it is, of course, of normal proportions if not uncommonly dashing," he laughed. Just then, the music shifted and a slow song began playing. Perfect.

"Well then," he said with a grin, keeping hold of her hand after their shake. "Will you risk a turn about the room with me?" He kept his eyes on hers, surprised at the depth and mischief there. Just how he liked it.

Another great moment caught on film as Chris noticed professional Quidditch player Oliver Wood greeting a fellow student. Quickly, before the two could make their way onto the dance floor he snapped a picture.

If it had been any other boy - man, Dani corrected herself - she'd have sassed back at him, something along the lines of his having imagined her to be ugly. But he wasn't any other man. The burly blond before her was simultaneously that Scottish former student who'd once shared these halls, and a bit of a hero; a starting player for her favourite team. So the compliment, coming from him, seemed to carry more weight. Trying not to grin stupidly, she answered. "I'm smaller than almost everyone." Dani wasn't sure how to take the compliment beyond thanking him, so she settled for curling her hand behind her ear, despite the lack of loose locks to tidy.

"It's nice to meet you too, Oliver." There. A proper sentence. She was beginning to sound like a human again. Besides, if she thought about some of his comments, they put him in a very human light. "Very dashing," she agreed, unable to ignore the fact that her hand was still held in his, "though if it were bigger, you could block more goal, I'm sure." Ugh, it wasn't even funny, but she'd said it now.

Being this close to his smile was more than a little befuddling for the tiny blonde, but she smiled at him at any rate. "Let it never be said Gryffindor is the only reckless House. I'd be delighted to." The music had changed, a slow song that would have them standing close. She tried not to giggle.

Oliver gave her a crooked smile and resisted the urge to bop her on the nose. He didn't want to make her feel too young, not when looking at her was making him feel a little funny inside. "Maybe, but I bet you pack quite the punch," he said.

He laughed heartily at her joke, saying "You caught me there. Well, I shall work on swelling my head to a more useful size. In the meantime..." he said, trailing off, cocking his head to the side and motioning towards the dance floor.

He brought her to the center of the dance floor before pulling her close. She seemed even smaller pressed against him, and he brought their linked hands up to rest between them as he rested his other hand on the small of her back. He could feel his heart beat quicken, which was a strange sensation. "How many other slow dances from professional Quidditch players have you gotten tonight," he joked, but kept his voice low. He leaned even closer to whisper in her ear, "Even if you did, I think I have something they do not." He twirled her then, and dipped her slowly backwards, giving her a wide wicked grin.

"Bet you didn't expect that."

That crooked smile just made Dani want to sit and sigh. It was somehow adorably boyish but incredibly handsome at the same time, and a little bit of Dani was simply amazed he was directing it at her. "I speak softly, but carry a big stick," she agreed with the slightest of sweet smirks.

When they claimed their space on the dance floor, it seemed to Dani as if the rest of the world lost focus a little; they were still there, certainly, but none of it had her attention, not when his free hand found the small of her back and the skin beneath her dress seemed to tingle under his touch. "Fourty-two," she quipped with a facetious face. Truth be old, he was so far the only pro she'd danced with. She'd spoken to a few, but dancing had so far been limited to school friends or former house mates, such as Penny.

And well - none of them had Oliver's skill. As he brought her back up, Dani bit her lip to contain the giggle the move prompted. Swooning backwards had been all too easy in arms strong enough to hold and lead her. Returning his grin, Dani let loose a little laugh. "Not at all. You're not just a very pretty face, are you?"

Oliver brought her back up from the dip, and pulled her close. He liked her laugh, which was tinkly but not overly girly. He leaned in close, whispering his answer in her ear. "No, I definitely am not." She was warm and soft in his arms and he was happy as they swayed on the dance floor. He knew it was silly, to like someone so much he hardly knew, especially someone younger...but she felt right in his arms. "Want to take a walk?" he said, taking her hand in his and leading her outside. He probably should have waited for her to agree, but his heart was beating loudly and she certainly wasn't protesting.

He brought her into the hall outside the Great Hall, and he smiled as his memory went back to his years at Hogwarts. He led her down the hall to a quiet corridor, the sounds of the dance drifting towards them. Without another word he pulled her to him and covered her mouth with his own. It wasn't like him to be quite so quickly take charge, but he had to admit that he couldn't help wanting to kiss her. He kept his hands at her lower back, and smiled, parting her lips. She did taste very sweet.

When she danced with Oliver it was different - so different, than with any of her contemporaries. There were no hesitating hands hovering at her waiste, no unsure glances to check his feet; somehow dancing with him made Dani feel a little less like herself and a little more like who she wanted to be. His confidence was almost palpable, and easy to let herself get swept up in. When he enquired about a walk she gave an affirmative murmur, smiling to herself when his big hand closed over hers and Oliver led her out of the room. Later she'd think that leaving together was not their brightest move, despite the low lighting of the room, but right now all Dani's thoughts were on the man leading her out into the corridor.

Her tall shoes clacked on the stone, a sound that had always made Dani feel more grown up, and she grinned as Oliver pulled her round the corner and against his chest. And then, Merlin, he was kissing her, and it was like the whole world stopped. If she gasped, it was lost against his lips, and while Dani was surprised - she'd expected they'd come out for quiet to talk, probably about quidditch - she certainly wasn't complaining. She was up on her tiptoes even in her high heels, anchored by his hold as her hands roamed his chest. Taking the liberty afforded by their closeness, her hands slipped under his jacket, one hooking behind his neck as they kissed.

If Oliver could have had it his way, he would have whisked her off right then, took her to his parent's shop in Hogsmeade, been as romantic as he knew how with her. Something about her intoxicated him. Her hands on his chest was giving him a soft feeling in his chest and he smiled into his kiss. He opened her lips with his, darting his tongue into her mouth, bringing a hand up to stroke her cheek. Her skin was so soft, and he loved how it felt. He knew they had been out here for a little longer than was entirely appropriate before people asked questions, so with a little groan he pulled back and leaned forward to rest his forhead against hers.

"I've been waiting to do that for quite a long time," he said, keeping a hand at her cheek and looking her right in the eye.

He was still touching her, still close, and though Dani leaned into his hand, his sudden absence was something definite, acute. She hadn't wanted the kiss to end, not like this. Not at all.

Her more logical self might have asked exactly how long this quite long time was, but Dani found that facet of her personality conveniently silenced. Snogging Oliver Wood tended to do that to a person.

"You and me both," Dani murmured truthfully. She'd known who Oliver was a lot longer than he'd known of her, and she'd be lying if she tried to claim she'd never once daydreamed about this. Kissing him. Which is why she didn't think it should be over so terribly soon. Taking the initiative, it was Dani's turn to take his hand and tug Oliver along, down their corridor and into an unused room, complete with odd old bits of furniture hiding like slumbering beasts under cloth covers.

Once the door was shut, Dani pressed herself against the broadness of his chest, lips finding his once more. She knew the feeling growing in the pit of her stomach; Dani wanted him, even if there were a thousand reasons she shouldn't.
