Sweethearts Dance

WHAT: The Annual Sweethearts Dance
WHO: Current 6th and 7th Years, Hogwarts alumni from 1994 to 1997.
WHEN: Sunday, 5:00PM
WHERE: Hogwarts, Great Hall

The Great Hall is over-the-top but luckily not a deluge of pink. Flitwick and McGonagall charmed and transfigured things to smell sweetly, sparkle, glow in soft pinks and reds, and give a general romantic feel. Think the Yule Ball, where there are round tables set up around the perimeter and an open dance floor. There is an eight-piece orchestra that takes requests, giving contemporary music, even, a classical spin. There is food galore -- mostly sweets but some savory dishes as well. Rose-water punch and strawberry ice cream. Blackberry apple cider. Chocolates. Cakes. Customizable, charmed candy hearts are available to give to your date or your best mate. There are some WWW Valentine's pinwheel fireworks overhead. If you can imagine it, it's happening.

Feel free to comment below with your character's clothes, date, anything of note that happened. Also, feel free to enjoy your own threads or reactions or whatever. Really, have fun.

Daphne was afraid to open up her mouth again as she was currently two seconds away from chewing on her black slingbacks. But she managed to get it together momentarily to smile up at him. "I didn't mean it in a bad way, I hope you know," she started, the damnable blush coming back. What was wrong with her? "I just meant..."

She quickly hushed as he pulled her closer. Swallowing hard, she rested her hands on his arms, trying to focus on what she was about to say. "It's nice to see you smile," she finally murmured, her voice soft as she looked up at him with wide eyes.

"Even if I take you away from your books now and then?"

"Even if," he murmured, returning her gaze. The song had reached a crescendo then and even though he hadn't watched a whole lot of those muggle movies over the years, Theodore knew this was probably the part where he should kiss the girl. But, Theo never saw himself as the 'leading man' type, so he let the moment pass.

It was a small victory to him, though, as he'd managed to at least hint at his changing feelings toward Daphne.

Daphne found herself unable to look away from him, even after his response, which set the fluttering into full effect. And for a moment, even though it was a short one, she thought he may kiss her. Her fingers even curled into the material of his shirt lightly as a reaction.

But then he didn't. And whereas she suddenly wanted to bury her face against his chest in embarrassment for even thinking such a thing, she didn't. Instead, she smiled up at him, happy to have at least gotten that much out of him as his words mixed with the way he was looking at her gave her a little hope.

"I feel special," she admitted softly after a moment. "Being the girl who managed to get Theo Nott away from a book."

	Continuing to watch the dance floor, there were times when Chris felt as if he were spying on rather intimate moments. Yet, here he was once again focusing his camera in order to get the best pictures of the night. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

	Daphne blinked when the flash brought her out of her reverie and looked away from Theo in time to see Chris there with his camera. Realizing he had taken a picture of them, she smiled at him. "I want a copy of that." she called out with a laugh. (Reply to this) (Parent) (Thread)

Theo laughed with Daphne as they watched Chris disappear into the crowd and smiled warmly at her for saying she wanted the picture of them together.

"You are special, Daphne," he finally answered. "And not just for that reason." Out of all the girls at Hogwarts that he'd gotten to know as acquaintances over the years and had an understanding about, Daphne was the rarest of the lot. She was like him in that she had a completely different side to her, once you got to truly know her.

Daphne blushed when he smiled at her, thankful that he didn't seem to mind her wanting a picture from the night even though they had both been taken off-guard (and no telling what her expression was at the time - she could only imagine).

The blush easily deepened at his response. She hoped that her thoughts, as muddled as they currently were, weren't written on her face. "That means a lot to me, Theo...that you think that." She was curious as to what reasons he had, though, for saying that. She was about to ask him to clarify when her mouth had other ideas.

"Especially considering how my feelings for y..." She stopped just in time, her hand clamping over her mouth as her face took on a mortified look. I cannot believe I just let that slip! Oh please, please don't let him have heard it! I've scared him off, I know it!

Whereas Theodore had started the evening trying to convince himself that Daphne only saw him as a friend, he was now starting to feel hopeful if not certain that she might feel a little differently. The last lingering bits of nervousness finally faded away, leaving a bolder, much more confident Theo in their midst.

"I'm glad to hear i--" he began, but stopped short when she let the other words slip. The admission caused him to blush lightly but he grinned once again thanks to it and the rather adorable look on Daphne's face. Theo stopped moving and stared unabashedly at her for a few seconds, then brought his hand up and delicately removed the hand she'd clamped over her mouth. Throwing caution to the wind, he leaned in and planted a tentative kiss on her lips.

Daphne had been about to bolt when he started to speak. That would have been the Slytherin thing to do - run away. But she was tired of being seen as a typical Slytherin. And so she stood there, ready to take whatever he was about to say. Even if he told her that he didn't feel the same. Even if she was left feeling stupid and embarrassed.

She wasn't surprised when he blushed. People tended to do that when embarrassed or put on the spot. She was, however, surprised when he smiled and stopped moving to the music. Her hazel eyes widened slightly as he tugged her hand down. She started to say his name, to apologize for what she had done but that was quickly pushed to the side when he leaned towards her.

At first it didn't compute. What was going on? Was he..? Theo was kissing her. He wasn't angry with her or embarrassed. He wasn't laughing at her or sneering at her for making a fool of herself. He was...kissing her. Once the realization of what was happening sank in, her eyes fluttered shut, her body relaxing as she leaned up into the kiss.

When he felt her relax into the kiss, Theodore tightened the hold his other arm still had around her waist and pulled her closer, deepening their kiss. He could hardly believe that he'd had the courage to kiss her to begin with, much less out in the middle of a crowded dance floor full of their peers, but none of that mattered at the moment.

When the kiss ended, Theo still held her close and stared down at her, not even caring that he could feel the eyes of those around them watching. "I probably should have done that much sooner. Then we would've had no reason to be so jittery about tonight."

Daphne still couldn't believe what was happening. It almost seemed like a dream as clichéd as it sounded. She had been trying to tell herself that he didn't like her as anything more than a friend. But friends didn't give friends sweet kisses that had sent the fluttery feeling into overtime. Nor did they do so where anyone could see them.

As the kiss ended and he pulled away, she couldn't help but smile up at him, her bottom lip catching between her teeth. "I wasn't sure if you would ever do that to be honest..." she finally admitted, chuckling softly at his words. "But I'm happy you did. And it happened when it was meant to happen."
