Sweethearts Dance

WHAT: The Annual Sweethearts Dance
WHO: Current 6th and 7th Years, Hogwarts alumni from 1994 to 1997.
WHEN: Sunday, 5:00PM
WHERE: Hogwarts, Great Hall

The Great Hall is over-the-top but luckily not a deluge of pink. Flitwick and McGonagall charmed and transfigured things to smell sweetly, sparkle, glow in soft pinks and reds, and give a general romantic feel. Think the Yule Ball, where there are round tables set up around the perimeter and an open dance floor. There is an eight-piece orchestra that takes requests, giving contemporary music, even, a classical spin. There is food galore -- mostly sweets but some savory dishes as well. Rose-water punch and strawberry ice cream. Blackberry apple cider. Chocolates. Cakes. Customizable, charmed candy hearts are available to give to your date or your best mate. There are some WWW Valentine's pinwheel fireworks overhead. If you can imagine it, it's happening.

Feel free to comment below with your character's clothes, date, anything of note that happened. Also, feel free to enjoy your own threads or reactions or whatever. Really, have fun.

Harry arrived a little after 5:30 with Ginny on his arm, steadfastly ignoring any whispers that might have broken out. So who cares if he's attending with his ex-girlfriend? He certainly doesn't. He enjoyed the strawberry ice cream and blackberry apple cider. He even danced if Ginny wanted him to.

Though Ginny wasn't one of the Hogwarts girls who had spent weeks planning her every move, she had succumbed to the need to spend most of the day primping. She had shut herself up in her dormitory, and proceeded to spend the rest of the day trying to figure out just what needed to be done to her hair and makeup. The result had been to curl her hair and then pin it up, while keeping her makeup rather natural with the exception of adding a bit of drama to her eyes and a dash of peachy-pink lipstick. But the rest of it, well that had been easy as her wardrobe had been rather limited in dresses that were appropriate for a dance.

Her mum had sent the one that had been given to her at her last birthday, and the shoes they had purchased to match should she ever need to wear it (which had made Ginny wonder if her mum had suspected there would be a dance at Hogwarts). Fleur had lent her a bag and owled a package of accessory options, gifting her the gold band that she had liked the most out of the lot. So, at 5:15 she had strolled down to the Common Room in her oufit, and tried not to laugh at all the princess analogies that were popping into her head. It was so terribly clichè to walk down the stairs and beam at your date, but it had happened and she hadn't really stopped smiling since.

Or staring at Harry, but she was hoping that he wasn't noticing. And if he was he was being polite enough not to comment.

"You know, its not nearly as garish as I thought it'd be," she told Harry once they had made it into the Great Hall. "I think I was waiting for hot pink hearts and cupids tossing confett---" she paused, as small shiny hearts began to float on her head, "Spoke too soon." Ginny said with a shrug, watching as the tiny winged cherub floated off to assault some other unsuspecting guest.

Harry grinned at his date, wondering if it would be too much of a cliche if he mentioned how nice she cleaned up. Probably. Instead, he simply held out his arm and escorted her down to the Great Hall.

"It could always be worse," Harry remarked, running a hand through his hair to get any remaining confetti out. "We could have first and second years running about getting overly hyper on sugar." They would be unbearable other wise, even more than normal. Thankfully it wasn't Harry's responsibility to deal with them more than he had to.

"Did you want to get something to eat or drink?"

"You have a point...." she agreed, reaching out to brush a few pieces of confetti from Harry's jacket, "although I do have something for you in my trunk. I didn't even think to bring it down earlier. Mum sent Ron and I some sweets for the holiday, and she included something for you and Hermione," Ginny explained, "You're guaranteed to love it. And you are lucky I didn't eat it myself."

At Harry's suggestion of food Ginny suddenly realized that she was actually very hungry. Primping for the dance had seen her skip lunch, and the chocolate she had eaten instead was no longer cutting it now that the excitement of meeting up with Harry and getting into the Great Hall had worn off a bit. "I am actually starving," she admitted with a small smile, "I'm sure all the boys noticed that the hall was suspiciously absent of girls?" Ginny asked as she headed towards the tables, wrinkling her nose slightly as her stomach gave a small rumble at the smell of food.

"My mum sent some as well. We'll all share and Hermione can remind us to brush our teeth so we don't get cavities." He was smirking now. As if he was going to turn down a Molly Weasley baked good. Did he look like he was going nutters?

Harry glanced around. There were a fair few of guys milling about, without an idea what to do. "Probably, but if they're smart, they'll get something to eat now before the girls make their entrances."

He guided them over to the table that held all the food, not shy about picking up a plate and piling it high. He was a growing boy, after all.

If Harry's excuse for the amount of food on his plate was that he was a boy, Ginny's was that she was a Weasley, which meant that being able to eat large amounts of food was a requirement, written right underneath breed like rabbits, be ginger-haired, and posses large amounts of freckles. "Let's try to find a table that's not right in the middle of everything," she suggested to Harry once she had selected her food and picked up a glass of pumpkin juice.

"Your mum sent me baked goods?" Ginny asked once they were walking towards a table, her question having been sidetracked by the promise of food, "I probably shouldn't be surprised, but I am," she said, carefully transferring her plate from her hand to the table.

He followed Ginny to a table, flopping down a bit ungracefully, though he didn't much care. Sipping his cider, he watched as the orchestra begin to play a slow song. Boring. "So, thought up any more plays? We want to be ready for Ravenclaw."

Swallowing a bite of his biscuit, Harry nodded. "She sent everyone something. Or she sent me a large package and demanded that I not stuff myself."

"No," she answered with a sigh, using her fork to stab the pasta on her plate, "no time. We've been practicing for Romeo and Juliet so much, and then quidditch practice and homework on top of that." And Ginny did feel a little guilty, she loved devising plays and talking strategy with Harry (and sometimes Ron) but ever since their last discussion she had passed on the chance due to work. It wasn't that Harry needed her help, he was capable of it himself, but she didn't like brushing people off. "I think the team is good enough to give them a little difficulty, it won't be an easy win for either of us."

Her assurance was followed by a rather un-lady-like sort, and a smile, "Oh, Harry, then she didn't actually send me anything. She sent you sweets to share with whoever you want." Boys. They just didn't understand some things.

"Smile," Chris commanded walking up to the couple sitting at the table. Of course he would give them a moment to put down the cutlery and pose before snapping a picture and heading off across the room.

Harry was distracted from his answer when he heard the tell tale sign of a camera going off. When Chris slipped back into the crowd, he shrugged and turned back to Ginny. "Damn, forgot what I was going to say," he laughed, popped a bit of food in his mouth, chewed and swallowed, before he continuing.

"She did send you something! She sent me things to share with my friends. It's not like she expects me to go off and give a cupcake to Malfoy." The mere thought was nearly horrifying. "So clearly she sent you cupcakes." It clearly made sense to him.
