Dagny, who now sported a colourful cluster of flowers painted on one side of her face, offered Thad the last bite of cotton candy - she couldn't say candy floss with a straight face - and flashed him a grin. "Sure thing, superstar." It took everything not to roll her eyes at the joke, something she'd heard plenty of variations of. Since they'd started dating, they had been to plenty of fairgrounds and carnivals and she'd grown very fond of the escapism and simple joys of the rides and games. "You're just saving yourself for the 'test your strength' booth."

She passed over her payment for the game, pleased that even if she missed every single shot then it was all going to a good cause. The miniature bludgers were floating around lazily to lull the patron into a false sense of security. The game seemed simple enough: hit the bludgers to strike the wooden Quidditch players at the back of the booth.

"You'd better not laugh if I miss every shot," she warned Thad playfully as she picked up the bat.

Chuckling, Thad turned his body toward hers and ducked his head to brush a kiss against the corner of her jaw. "I'm sure I don't know what you mean," he said, putting on an air of exaggerated innocence. He didn't think he was weak by any means, but he also knew he wasn't the strongest bloke. Gavin could probably leave him in the dust when it came to feats of strength.

His fingertips danced down her back as she picked up one of the bats, and he grinned crookedly at her. "I think I know better than that by now," he said drolly. And then, he took a small step back to give her room to swing at the miniature bludgers. Try as he might, he couldn't help chuckling as she worked through her turn, though he would swear he was laughing at how fun it all was and not at her.

"Nice hit!" he declared with a whoop, pumping his fist in the air when one of her swings made contact with a mini bludger.

She pouted a little as his hand left her back, enjoying the casual touch and the sight of that familiar crooked grin that she loved so much.

Naturally, the bludgers started whizzing around faster once Dagny had picked up the bat, so it wasn't simply a case of just striking a stationary ball. So when she finally struck one on her seventh attempt, Dagny threw her arms up in the air with a triumphant "Yes!", her glee multiplying when the bludger actually took out the largest, most obvious target.

It was the only one she hit in the end, the sudden rush from getting one shot on target making her laugh too much to swing the bat with much force. Her one fallen Quidditch player earned her the smallest of the available prizes and it didn't take Dagny long to pick one out from the selection of small, squishy plushies that were supposed to be Quidditch mascots.

Dagny held out her trophy to Thad, smirking as she presented him with a pudgy black and white bird that fit on the palm of her hand. "A magpie for my Magpie."

The way she celebrated the hit had warmth curling through him, and he stilled for a brief moment, just soaking in her smile, the pure joy she exuded, and he was reminded again of just how utterly and irrevocably in love with her he was.

When she finished her turn and picked out the little magpie plushie, he took it and held it up next to his face. "Look, our first pet!" he joked. He didn't imagine either of them would be changing their mind about wanting live pets, but the thought entertained him anyway. "What should we name him?" he asked as he draped his other arm over her shoulders and started steering her toward the next booth over.

"And we don’t even have to clean up after it!" Dagny agreed, still smiling. The silly little thing was going to take pride of place next to Thad's Quidditch awards; it might be the closest to a sporting trophy that she ever earned. "Oh, that’s a very serious issue, naming a magpie," she said, barely noticing how Thad was steering her to the claw prize game at the next booth as she pretended to consider the question. The way he was so obviously pleased for her small win meant the world to her.

Still, giving it a name would be cute, Dagny decided. "How about Gavin?" she suggested slyly. "It’s got the same little scowling eyes." The plushy’s tiny eyes were perhaps a couple of millimetres too close giving it a somewhat disgruntled look.

She glanced at the booth. "Is this where you put those seeker reflexes to the test?" she joked. Maybe after this one she might suggest getting popcorn.

The suggestion of name drew a loud, sharp bark of laughter from him, and he wasn't sure if he was impressed or horrified with it. On the one hand, he'd never particularly liked Gavin much and wouldn't want to be bandying the name about, even for a fake pet, but on the other, she wasn't wrong about its eyes. "You may be right about that," he conceded. "We should make sure we're recording if Gavin ever finds out."

When they made it to the next booth, they had to wait in a small queue but it was only a few minutes before it was there turn. "Let's see if those reflexes haven't abandoned me since the season's end," he said, waggling his brows at her. A subtle nod at the attendant, and he started his first turn. He passed a coin over and the attendant flicked her wand at the claw, releasing it for Thad to maneuver.

He missed purposefully on the first attempt, pouting dramatically at Dagny before passing another coin over for a second attempt. The attendant cast a subtle bit of magic, the little egg jewelry box being caught in the claw in a way that hopefully looked entirely of his own skill. It was his anyway, having been planted among the prizes ahead of time. As the prize was released into the little chute, he gave a little cheer, grinning at Dagny.

Getting the egg out, he looked it over speculatively. "Kind of shiny, isn't it? Oh hey, it looks like it opens," he said as casually as he could, though excitement and nerves were thrumming through his veins. He passed the egg over to her, hoping she would automatically sort out how to open it, and as she did, he dropped to one knee, not caring how ridiculously cliché it was to do so. As the rings inside were revealed, he said, "Dagny, I love you more than I thought it was possible to love another person, and there's no one else I want to be on this ride with than you. Will you marry me?"

Dagny cheered for Thad but it wasn’t until the small, silvery egg was in her hands that the thought occurred to her that the prize was a little bit too nice for a claw prize. It only took a gentle press of her thumb to open the clasp and she found herself looking at a beautiful set of rings that definitely weren’t carnival trinkets.

The world went a little blurry around the edges as she realised Thad was down on one knee. Dagny knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that she had met her soulmate, the man she was going to spend the rest of her life with. They were building their dream home together, entwining their lives, so Dagny had always been completely confident that was marriage was a step that they would take together. She just hadn’t expected a proposal today with face paint and fairy lights and the scent of fried donuts in the air.

It was perfect.

“Yes.” Her answer jolted out of her barely a moment after he’d asked the question. There was no other reply she could possibly contemplate giving. “Yes!” Every happy, delighted emotion seemed to bubble to the top all at once, tears brimming as she bent to kiss Thad, too impatient to even wait for him to stand.
