Day 7 - Late morning
Who:Watanuki and Domeki
What: happy meeting of two old friends
When: late morning
Where: in the streets, not far from the Thrift Store
Rating: I bet it'll be PG-13 for language
Status: complete

The snow didn't look like it'd stop any time soon and Watanuki was getting annoyed. Even though they had some food and water stored, he didn't like the idea of being trapped in there for he didn't know how long. Besides, he was worried that if the snow would pile any higher against the shop windows the glass would collapse under the weight.
Eventually he made up his mind and decided to go and have a look around to see if he could find a better place. He was lucky that the door opened towards the interior of the shop or he would be stuck inside, he reflected as he pushed his way through the snow that already reached past to his knees. Before reaching the end of the street he'd regretted his decision to go outside: the cold wind made his face burn, and the snow was getting into his eyes and clothes. Even with his new jacket and gloves, he felt freezing. Seeing a figure advancing through the snow, he went in that direction waving one arm to attract their attention.

The cold had already set in quite deeply and Domeki shivered against the brisk wind. Upon setting out, he had made a point to wear the heaviest sweater which could be found and he had dug a sufficiently thick coat from the amassed pile - but the cold and the snow had managed to wear through and now he was beginning to regret not thinking of bring a pair of gloves with him. Not that they would have done much good, limiting and impairing the movements of his hands as they would have done.

Sighing quietly, he flexed his numbing fingers against the stiff wood of the bow which he still carried in his right hand. He was pleased with how his morning of exercise and teaching had gone, but he was still caught up in the optimistic hope that neither he nor Shannon would have to use a weapon while in this place - even if he knew that it was likely only a matter of time before it became a necessity.

Domeki found that he really didn't want to dwell upon this thought and so he turned his face up and into the wind - only to spot another figure, one which appeared to be waving frantically toward him. Curious as to who else would be so foolish to be out in this sort of weather, he began to jog over - and he was only marginally surprised when he recognized the approaching figure as Watanuki.

"I guess idiots don't notice the cold," was the greeting he called to his classmate and friend. It was ingrained deep in his make up that Domeki not show any pleasure at seeing his friend and he did hold up this unspoken ritual - even if he did find a small relief in noting that Watanuki seemed to be well, if not a bit cold. "What do you think you're doing out here?"

Watanuki heard Domeki's voice before recognizing him, and started walking more quickly towards his friend. "Who are you calling an idiot, idiot?" he called back automatically.
"What are you doing here?" he added, glancing at the long bow in the boy's hands. "Have you been hunting for snowmen?"
Despite his attempts not to sound worried, his voice was shrilly. He hoped Domeki hadn't been stupid enough to try and hunt one of the creatures in the forest, and looked up and down at him to check. He seemed fine, apart from the cold, so Watanuki felt entitled to get annoyed at him.

"I was looking if there was any place I could move to while it's still snowing," he explained, even though it was nothing of Domeki's business.
"It's freezing cold and away from most food supplies, and the snow is almost blocking the door. I had just finished tidying up too!"
He stared darkly at Domeki, as if all of this was his fault.

"I heard that there were deer. I thought that they might wander closer to town in this weather looking for food or shelter." It wasn't entirely a lie. Domeki had entertained the idea of hanging around the Carnival even after his lesson with Shannon had ended so that he could hunt some more food for everyone but the cold and the snow made it a bit too difficult - he had been forced to leave after only a short while. Tipping his head back, he stared pensively up into he drifting snow for a long moment before continuing. "I was thinking sukiyaki with deer meat."

Indeed, Domeki was entirely fine, aside from the cold, and so he found his usual amusement in the shrill sound of Watanuki's voice. The nagging and the yelling he had expected and he found that it was quite good to see that the other boy was still up to his usual form - it was as good a sign as any that Watanuki really was fine. "I thought the door would be blocked sooner or later," Domeki agreed with a slight nod. If he was bothered by the dark stare of the other, then he hardly showed it. "You should have tried to find somewhere more elevated when you were choosing where to stay."

Watanuki privately agreed that, after his short walk in the snow, the prospect of a warm meal sounded good to him. But he wasn't going to agree with Domeki so easily, especially if food was concerned. For Domeki, it was automatically implied that Watanuki had to cook every food he mentioned.
"There's no tofu," he pointed out testily. "Or cabbages. It would have to be just be deer meat with deer meat."

He frowned at Domeki. It was snowing and they needed to find a better place where to stay. Why did he look so calm? It was unnerving, and he proceeded to complain loudly.
"It wasn't as if I could have predict this snow storm, moron!" he burst out. "And neither did anyone else. The weather was fine just a couple of days ago, it's not normal..."
He stomped his feet, both to vent his rage and keep warm. "So where do you suggest going?" he asked.

"Mm, I should have expected as much," Domeki sighed as he returned his glance to Watanuki. On some level, he knew that his demands were rather ridiculous but that didn't mean he would stop making them - especially not when his requests constantly got a rise from his classmate. "I suppose I'll just have to wait for someone who can cook so I can ask them to make something for me."

"Even a complete idiot should be able to tell when the snow will fall enough to make trouble," he pointed out reasonably. Not that he could really fault Watanuki for not being able to predict the changes in weather when the seasons seemed to come and go by the day but that didn't mean he wouldn't try. "Still, that could mean that by tomorrow all the snow will be gone."

Finding that he wanted a moment to think over the last of the questions, Domeki started to walk again. He chose the direction rather arbitrarily since he really didn't know where the both of them could stay but he figured that they would come across a familiar building sooner rather than later - and the simple act of walking would help keep some warmth about them. "Is there anyplace that would accept a loud idiot?"

Watanuki heard the taunting in Domeki's tone, but he was too used to bickering to refrain from commenting. "What? I can cook perfectly well," he snapped. "Maybe I cook too well for a simpleton like you. You can eat raw meat from now on, for all I care!"
He crossed his arms angrily, determined never to cook for Domeki again. Ever.

"It was sunny outside yesterday morning!" Watanuki cried out. He gestured wildly to the snow piling up around them. "How could anyone have predicted that this would have happened?"
He felt increasingly annoyed. Why did he have to run into Domeki, of all people?
Besides, there were another 20-30 people in town, all of which had been taken by surprise by this snowstorm. He honestly didn't know why Domeki was talking as if he was the only moron who hadn't seen the snow coming.
"Gone by tomorrow?" Watanuki pouted. "I wish..."

When Domeki started walking again, Watanuki tried to follow in his footsteps to avoid having to walk into the fresh snow. "Where are you going now?" he asked. "Don't just start walking away for no reason!"
Domeki's question, apart from being annoying, caught him rather by surprise. "Who are you calling a loud idiot?" he yelled. "And I don't know! There's too much snow around, I don't even see where I'm going!"
He turned his head around, trying to spot a familiar landmark. He couldn't be that far from the thift store anyway.

Normally, the threat of not having Watanuki cook for him would have caused Domeki to cave but he had been threatened with this too many times for him to take it entirely seriously. As it was, he lifted one shoulder in a slightly disinterested shrug. "If you cooked well, then it shouldn't be a problem to come up with a way to make more than just plain deer meat."

"If no one could predict that we'd have feet of snow today, then no one can predict what sort of weather we might have for tomorrow," he pointed out reasonably. Obviously, he really didn't hold Watanuki responsible for not predicting the sudden snowstorm, but he really couldn't resist the temptation to cause the other boy to overreact. "By tomorrow, it could sunny and warm enough to cause the snow to melt, right?"

Domeki struggled a few steps further in the snow before coming to an abrupt halt. Much like his friend, he was having a bit of difficulty walking through the accumulated snow and he was no longer so sure that either of them could walk too much further without getting entirely lost. "Here. Hold onto my sleeve so that we don't get separated," he offered as he held out his arm toward Watanuki. As he did this, he used his other hand to root his journal from his pocket and then scribbled a quick note.

Watanuki bristled. He wasn't usually the kind of guy who went fishing for compliments, but he knew that if there was something he was good at it was houseworks.
"Fine," he said. "Just find the ingredients and I'll cook whatever you want. If you can find anything apart from canned food in this place and with this weather," he added. Privately, given the conditions they were in, he doubted they'd even have deer meat.

It was Watanuki's turn to shrug when Domeki mentioned the weather changes. "It could," he conceded. "Let's hope the snow stops soon."
He was starting to regret getting out of the shop in the first place (even though of course he'd rather die than say this out loud in front of Domeki); he hadn't realized how much the falling snow would have impaired his vision, and how difficult it would be to walk in it knee-deep. He wasn't wearing boots and by now his feet and legs were soaked to the bone. Right now what he wanted was to get inside as soon as possible and maybe get a cup of good tea. Neither of which would probably be happening any time soon.

Luckily for him, Watanuki was a few feet behind Domeki when the other boy suddenly stopped. He lost his balance and had to wave his arms wildly to avoid falling face down in the snow.
"Why didn't you warn me you were about to stop?" he complained loudly. However he reached out and grabbed Domeki's sleeve without any further complaint. The cold was making every movement more difficult than usual, and even arguing with Domeki took up too much energy.
"What are you doing now?" he asked seeing Domeki take out his journal, though the tone wasn't quite as annoyed as he'd meant.

The sad fact of the matter was that Domeki tended to tease Watanuki just because his cooking really was that good. It was also true that the only food he would feel really comfortable eating in this strange place was whatever Watanuki chose to make for him - and so, if his friend ever did go on strike, then he would be well and truly screwed. "I'll see what I can find once the weather clears," he responded easily. He was also a bit uncertain that he could get deer meat while it was snowing this hard but he wouldn't hesitate to go out and look for some if it became necessary.

Domeki answered the hope that the snow would stop soon with a rather eager nod. He surely wouldn't be sad to see the snow go, even if it had been nice when it was much shallower, and he would be quite glad once they managed to find their way to some shelter. Having been out in the weather so long, he found that he could barely feel his fingertips and he knew that his pants were soaked just about all the way through. He also seemed to be going numb in an almost alarming sort of way but he was content enough to ignore his own difficulties until he could get Watanuki somewhere warm and safe.

"Why weren't you paying attention to see when I would stop?" His answer was really only halfhearted as he had become rather distracted with trying to get his fingers to hold and to write with a pen. In a way, he hated to invade his big sister's privacy but going to the museum seemed like the only viable option at the moment. "I'm writing to my big sister to see if she'd mind us staying with her until the snow stops. It shouldn't be too hard to find our way there from here."

Watanuki only half-heard Domeki's words, and anyway he was too tired to complain. He just stood in the snow, grasping the other boy's sleeve with one hand and swaying slightly. His fingers felt frozen despite the thick gloves. Seeing Domeki writing something, Watanuki remembered that he wasn't wearing any gloves at all.
"Aren't your hands cold?" he asked numbly staring at Domeki's red hands.

He felt thankful when Domeki told him about finding a place where to stay, even though his choice of words confused him. "Big sister?" he repeated. Domeki didn't have any siblings. Then he remembered reading in the journal that some girl used to call him "little brother", though he couldn't say which girl that was. Thinking straight was getting increasingly difficult.
Watanuki tried to focus on the thought of finding some place to stay and wait for the snow to stop. He was feeling very sleepy, even though it was only around midday and he'd had a good long sleep last night. It would be embarrassing if he ended up fainting in the snow and had to be saved by Domeki.

"Mm," was his almost disinterested answer to Watanuki's question about his hands. The true fact of the matter was that his hands had gone entirely numb quite a long while ago but, then again, so had much of his body - Domeki was getting used to moving about without feeling much of anything and so that particular problem had slid low on his scale of priorities. What was rather higher on his scale was getting Watanuki to the safety of someplace warmer before he either passed out or froze.

"Shannon. She said that we can stay at the museum for a bit, until the snow melts," Domeki explained as he stuffed his journal back into the pocket of his jacket. He glanced over his shoulder to Watanuki and he found himself frowning at what he could read in the set of his friend's body. The cold was obviously affecting the boy rather badly and Domeki found himself doubting how much longer his friend would be able to take the cold.

"Here." In an easy motion, he shrugged out of the heavier of the two jackets he was currently wearing and he waited for no argument before moving to drape this same over Watanuki's shoulders. Satisfied that this would buy them a little more time, he began to trudge in the direction of the museum. "Try to walk right behind me as much as possible and walk where I'm walking."

Shannon... the museum...
Watanuki nodded vaguely. He felt awfully sleepy, but he couldn't fall asleep here and now. But it was so cold!
He didn't even manage to muster the strength to complain when Domeki gave him one of his coats. It was heavy and weighed him down even more, but he wrapped it more tightly around him with one arm and he started to feel a bit better.

He heard Domeki say something, then saw him move away out of the corner of his eyes. "Wait!" he called out, slowly trudging after him.
Domeki was clearly walking slowly, carefully pressing down the snow, but even so he was so much faster than him. Watanuki shook his head to try and stay focused. Lots of snowflakes had fallen on his glasses and he saw everything as through broken glass. It was making him dizzy. He tried to wipe the worst of the snow away with a sleeve but he only managed to smear the snow around more evenly.

After a while, he started to feel cold again. It wasn't a matter of one or two jackets, the water on his shoes and trousers was practically frozen now. He could feel his legs going numb, and Domeki probably wasn't faring any better.
In an effort to keep his mind off of this, he tried to strike up a conversation. He searched his mind for something - anything! - to say. Nothing. It wasn't easy, talking casually with Domeki. What was he interested in? Archery, food...
"When we get to the museum, I could cook dinner for everyone as a thank you for letting us stay," Watanuki said lamely.

Domeki was making an effort to walk slowly through the snow but he wouldn't allow himself to move as slowly as his body would like. He knew, all too well, that both he and Watanuki were in rather immediate danger of surrendering to the elements but he would do anything to not let that happen. So, he continued to trudge along at a slow and steady pace - all the while, doing his best to both beat down a path and to block the majority of the wind and the blowing snow with his body.

As he moved, he could feel the coldness seeping ever deeper into his body. He noted, in an absent sort of way, that his legs and arms were alien to him - almost as if they had been cut away. There was still a bit of feeling in his core but that was mostly just an abject sort of tingling. Wrinkling his face, he found that it felt as if he were wearing a rubber mask and his vision seemed to be darkening all around the edges.

Wait - had Watanuki been speaking? Domeki fought to concentrate on the words and he slowly came to understand what had been said. "That would be nice," he agreed with a slight movement of his head. "I'm sure they'd appreciate that. Maybe you could make some oden."

Watanuki cursed himself. He had been such a fool to go out in such a horrible weather, thinking it would be easy to get to some other building. He was never going to say it out loud in front of the jerk, but he knew that without Domeki's help he would have probably collapsed in the snow ages ago. Once they got out of this mess he had to find a way of repaying him.
Knowing Domeki, just cooking his favorite foods would be enough to make him happy.

"Oden," he nodded after Domeki's reply, mainly to himself. "I hope I can find a pot that's big enough..."
The thought of food and shelter managed to propel him forward until, wiping his glasses with a sleeve, he noticed the larger shape of a building looming above them.
Gathering his last energies he managed to close the distance between himself and Domeki. "Are we there?" he asked, too tired to use the annoyed tone he usually reserved for his friend. Now he was just weary, frozen to the bone and eager to get a roof and four walls between himself and the snow.

"I'll find you a pot big enough," he promised quietly. Domeki found that it felt good - and that it helped - to concentrate on something other than the endless snow and Watanuki's cooking was quite a pleasant distraction. He could just turn his attention to how warm and delicious the food would be and how nice it would be to share a meal with the rest of the people staying at the museum. It was more of a comfort than he would say to know that there was something warm and welcome ahead of them and it made putting one foot in front of the other that much easier. "The rest of the ingredients too, maybe. We might have to do without beer, though."

Upon registering the question, Domeki lifted his head and squinted into the wind. He thought that he could make the vague shadow of a building ahead but he didn't manage to place it until he managed to stumble on the lowest of the steps. Tipping his head back, he studied the facade for a long moment before realizing that this must be the museum. "I think this is it. We just have to knock and they should let us in."

Watanuki tried to smile, even though his face was frozen and he made more of a funny face. But it didn't matter since Domeki couldn't see him now anyway. "It's better if there is no beer," he retorted. "You're annoying enough when you're sober."
Talking with Domeki helped, even though Watanuki didn't have much breath to spare and with every breath he felt a cold wind down his throat. He coughed. A scarf would have been nice. He'd have to add it to the list of things to get once he could go back to the thrift store.
He still felt guilty every time he took an item, since it was technically stealing, but with each passing day he felt less and less restraint to do so. After all, he didn't have many choices: it was either that or freeze in this weather.

He gave a sigh of relief when Domeki identified the museum. He'd been following blindly the other boy for what had seemed like hours, and felt thoroughly lost. He would have never guessed that they had arrived if he didn't actually trust Domeki to know where he was going. Though what he said was: "Finally! We were walking for so long, I was sure you'd brought us to the wrong side of town entirely."
He caught up with Domeki and started climbing up the steps, only to fall down on his back. He hadn't realized how slippery the icy steps would be, and the lower ones were so covered with snow that it was hard to even guess where they started.

Domeki had meant to respond to the comment about being annoying sober with a dismissive vocal shrug but his throat was apparently too raw to allow something like that - he ended up nearly doubling in a series of ragged coughs which he only managed to silence after a few minutes of sustained struggle. His face red from the effort, he spoke in a jagged whisper. "You're only tolerable when I'm drunk."

The response wasn't quite worthy of the effort and he knew that it was an obvious lie but Domeki needed something to do to keep his mind from coming to a frozen stop. He could already feel his thoughts growing sluggish and, though they had managed to come to the safety of the museum, he knew that he had to get them inside - which meant that he had to be able to explain to whoever answered the door who he and Watanuki were.

He was just about to make his own way up the stairs when he noticed that Watanuki had apparently missed the step. His natural instinct was to try to catch his friend before he could hit the ground but Domeki's movements were slowed by the cold; his hands grabbed at the smaller frame but he only ended up being knocked over by the momentum of the fall. His back twinged with sharp pain as he found himself suddenly sitting in the snow but his concern when right to Watanuki.

"Did you hurt yourself?" He asked as he glanced to his friend. Briefly, he wondered if carrying Watanuki up to the door would be necessary but he would come to that once he knew that Watanuki was alright.

Trying to talk just to distract himself from the bitter cold, Watanuki realized that most of the time he talked with Domeki he wasn't really paying attention. He usually just replied mechanically, without paying attention, as a distraction from the rest of his life. Somehow their bickering seemed so stupid.
He wanted to point it out to Domeki, but he didn't think he'd manage to convey such a complicated concept at the moment. Even the simple sentence about oden had taken him a lot of effort. Just then he was interrupted by Domeki's sudden coughing fit, and decided that there would be time enough to talk after they were inside.

His thoughts were so confused that he didn't immediately understood what had happened after falling down. After some struggling he managed to bring himself on all fours, and even though he didn't think he'd suffered any injuries in the fall his limbs were still and he had problems moving his legs.
"I'm... fine, I think," he mumbled, turning to look at Domeki. He appeared to have fallen down as well. "Stupid," he said, out of habit more than anything. "Why did you have to go and fall down too? Who's the idiot now?"

He started scrambling on the snow, trying to get on his feet. He must have been a comical sight, but there was nobody around except for Domeki and he was in no position to make nasty remarks.
"Just one more step. We're almost there," he muttered, more to himself than Domeki

Good. I didn't want to have to carry you up the stairs." Domeki replied in a half-truth. The main reason he didn't want to have to try to carry Watanuki was because Domeki wasn't entirely sure that he could - he was having more than enough difficulty with his own near-frozen body and he couldn't imagine that carrying even someone as light as Watanuki would be easy. That wasn't to say that he still wouldn't do so if it became necessary. "You're still the idiot for coming out in the cold when you didn't have to."

The thought that he might well have broken his bow in the fall occurred to him and Domeki glanced to his side - and then relaxed to see that the weapon had apparently survived the fall fairly well. The arrows which he had wrapped in cloth and then stuck in the pocket of his jacket seemed fine, as well, but he'd pay more attention to them later, when he wasn't in danger of freezing to death.

Moving as if he were quite an old man, Domeki managed to pull himself from the snow and he closed the short distance to the door with no additional problems. Once there, he knocked loudly and silently prayed that someone was near enough to hear them. He really didn't want to have to spend any more time out in the weather.

Watanuki didn't even hear the last of Domeki's words. He had somehow managed to get back on his feet and was now using all of his concentration to make sure he managed to stay upright for as long as it took them to get inside.
This seemed to be an impossible task - he was already seeing everything fuzzy due to his glasses getting covered with snow crystals, but now it was as if everything was dancing in front of him. He felt dizzy in a very unpleasant way.

Any moment now, he kept telling himself. Someone would come and let them in. He'd just have to bear with the cold for a few more minutes. He wanted to stomp his feet to keep warm, but his junctures were so frozen that he could barely lift one foot.
While Domeki hammered on the door, he leaned against the outside wall to get a bit of rest. Very slowly, he lost consciousness and fell over.
