Damon headed back to the hut, feeling a bit better than he'd expected. He'd told Elena to go with Stefan, and while she might not, at least there was no more agonising over WHO she'd pick. He let himself in and smiled at Caroline. 'I don't think she expected it, but... it went better than I'd thought. It's weird... I feel... good?' he said. He dropped to the bed, lying back. 'Thank you,' he said quietly. 'You've helped a lot.'

Damon went looking for Elena--sort of. Which actually meant, he'd stopped avoiding her, and went to the beach. He'd spent yesterday and the day before avoiding her. Caroline had kept him sane since he'd seen her and Stefan kissing, for which he was grateful. Maybe she wasn't so obnoxious after all.

Stefan... Damon was avoiding him too. He had no right to be so insanely jealous of his brother. Elena was, after all, HIS girlfriend. But dammit, he was crazy with the green-eyed monster! He threw a rock at the ocean, skipping it a bit, before dropping to the sand.

He was really hoping that Klaus didn't show up. That was the last person he felt like dealing with. And he'd promised Caroline that he wouldn't try stuffing him in the volcano, and today, that one would be hard to keep.

Eric had had a difficult time hunting tonight. The animals had been scarce, as though they were in hiding. Nothing was different, as far as he could tell, so he didn't understand why. Because of this, he'd had only gotten back to the cave around 15 or 20 minutes ago. He sat watching Sookie sleep, a smile on his face. He couldn't remember ever being this content with a woman before. He stroked her hair gently and got up to go start skinning the animals he'd managed to catch.

When he got outside, he felt uneasy. SOMETHING was wrong. It took him a few seconds to process that the night was completely silent. Animals and insects were making no noise. Before he could consider the implications of this, he picked up a faint rumbling that turned rapidly into a moderate roar. He started to turn toward the sound when he was jolted off his feet.

'Sookie!' he shouted, scrambling toward the cave. He couldn't walk normally, so he bear crawled into the cave. He had no idea if the cave would hold, so he grabbed her and hurried outside. The area was clear, and being near the highest point, there was nothing to fall on them, so they were safe.

He sank to the ground to ride out the shaking that seemed ceaseless, though it lasted just shy of one minute, and breathed out a curse in Swedish. On the other side of the island, aways offshore from the beach, magma was spewing into the air. 'Holy shit...'

Damon watched as Elena reacted to Stefan's appearance. Neither of them had noticed he was there, and he made no effort to be noticed. Actually, it was the opposite: he faded back, not wanting to be seen.

The island did weaken their super-human attributes, but he still had good hearing. When he heard Elena's "I love you" he wished he didn't. He turned away, making his way down the shore until he was at the southern tip of the island. Sitting on the warm sand, he stared out at the water. He should've known, when Stefan turned up here, that it would come to that. And now he couldn't even compel her to forget his confession.

Awesome. At least it was familiar territory, so he knew how to handle. God knows he'd had years of practice. After all, they always chose Stefan.

Those who’ve managed to keep track of the days can see that the calendar reads April 1. The ominous rumble and subsequent shaking of the earth, beginning several hours before sunrise, is no joke however. Lasting nearly a minute, the intense earthquake rattles more than nerves--poorly built structures collapse in ruins. As villagers rush outside, they’re greeted by a frightening site. Orange-red magma is being thrown into the air from the ocean. The island itself is in no danger from the volcano; the lava is spewing away from the coastline. The earth continues to shake throughout the subsequent weeks, and the magma continues to flow. Within days, a new island has begun to emerge from the sea around the underwater volcano on the invisible boundary beyond which no one can pass. Each day, the new island grows by several inches.


Notes:
-The volcanic and seismic activity continues throughout the month, gradually decreasing, though it won’t stop completely for approximately 6 weeks, by which time the new island will rise approximately nine feet (2.7 meters) above sea level, and have a diameter of approximately 16 feet (4.9 meters)
-The initial earthquake would be measured at approximately 5.5 and very shallow, less than 5 km (3.1 miles) deep, making it feel more intense. This will be the strongest earthquake associated with this event.
-There is no tsunami from this event.
-The new island is uninhabitable, and there is nothing to explore, as it is quite simply hardened lava rock jutting up from the sea.

Damon left the village and went wandering. There wasn't a whole lot to do at the moment. The fields didn't need tending because the blizzard had killed all the crops. He had no interest in learning how to make clothes out of what was available to them, nor did he want to help ration out meat that the other vampire left the village after his nightly hunt. He was utterly bored. And on an island like this, that was a blessing.

It was also too good to last.

He glanced up as someone walked toward him, coming from the arrival hut. He prepared to give his best yeah this is a fucked up place, and hey, you ending up here is the least fucked up part, when he stopped. Was it her? Or a look-alike like that chick who looked like Rose?

'Caroline?' he asked, holding his breath. He didn't know if he wanted it to be her or not--not that his opinion mattered any in the matter.
