Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Character(s): Lexi, Stefan.
Rating: TBD
Cautions/Warnings: Language and broodiness.
Location: The woods surrounding the Arrival Huts.
Approximate Date: Shortly after Lexi's arrival to the island.
Status: Closed (for now).

Lexi continued walking around the island, staying between the woods and the beach. After walking up and down the area for what seemed like an hour without running into a single person, she stopped walking and placed her hands on her hips. Turning, she peered into the woods and listened closely, trying her best to tell if someone was there. After a minute or so she frowned, There's something off about this place, she thought. While her sight and hearing were still better than when she was human, somehow they weren't as strong as they usually were; like here they were diminished. Deciding it was time to give up in the beach, she made her way into the woods.

She soon realized that the woods were similar to the beach in the event that no one appeared to be in them either. "Okay, I cannot be the only person on this godforsaken island or wherever I am," she muttered as she pressed on. Just when she was about to call it quits and try to hunt for some food instead, she caught sight of something not to far ahead from where she was. She couldn't be entirely sure what or who it was because of the distance, but she was certain that it was human or at least human-like. Walking a little faster, she managed to close the gap between them quickly.

When she was finally close enough to get a look at the person, she couldn't believe her eyes. "Stefan?" she called out as she all but ran to him. "Stefan, oh my God, I can't believe it's you!" she laughed as she threw her arms around him.

The last few days had been rough for Stefan. Elena had told him that she'd needed some time to think, to decide between him and his brother. God, he still couldn't believe that there was even a decision to make, that once again he and Damon had gotten into this predicament with a girl they loved. At least this time they were dealing with one who was far less ruthless and far more human than Katherine had been, but it was still painful, honestly even moreso now because he didn't think he'd ever been in love with Katherine like he was in love with Elena.

He was trying to give her space and let her figure things out on her own, but that didn't change the fact that every fiber of his being wanted to go find her and hold her and kiss her like he had that first night he'd arrived here. He'd honestly thought that he was in a dream that day, and he'd forgotten about everything else but the one that he loved. He hated that he'd lost sight of Elena and their relationship while trying to save Damon. He just wished he could've made everyone happy somehow, but he'd failed miserably. So, so miserably.

Speaking of miserable, he was currently hiding in the woods to keep himself from running into Elena, because he didn't want to make this any harder for her than it already was. He wanted her to choose him fair and square, although a part of him would now always be worried about her feelings for Damon. It felt like everything had changed in the span of that one statement, but somehow he couldn't make himself stop loving her. He just couldn't.

When he heard sounds of someone coming up behind him, he turned his head and his jaw dropped at the sight of his best friend traipsing through the woods. "Lexi!" he called, catching her and squeezing her tightly. Shock rendered him speechless for a moment, but then he pulled back and asked, "How are you... didn't Damon... what happened? Are you all right?"

Lexi couldn't believe that of all the people she could have run into in the woods of who-knew-where, she had run into her best friend. She was so happy to see Stefan and to know he was here with her. After spending so much time freaking out about where she was and what the hell happened to her, having him with her was a wonderful reprieve.

As he pulled away, she was able to get a good look at his face and truthfully, she didn't like what she saw. He looked miserable, and not usual I'm-Stefan-brooding-is-my-middle-name miserable, but the raw my-heart-hurts-and-I-don't-know-what-to-do miserable. The kind that required someone to get him out of his own head long enough to talk about it and try to help fix it. Something she knew she was quite skilled at, given how long they'd known each other.

"Yeah, I'm fine, I promise," she answered with a smile, placing her hands on his shoulders. She wanted to figure out what exactly had happened to her as much as he did, but that wasn't important right now; what was important was her helping her best friend. Her smile gave way to a concerned frown, "But I can tell you're not, so let's put your ass of a brother on the back burner for right now and focus on you. What's up, Stefan?" she pressed gently, looking up into his eyes as she tried to figure it out.

Stefan just couldn't believe that Lexi was alive. He'd watched her die; he'd felt that crushing sense of devastation at having lost his best friend and he'd never really gotten over it. It was so surreal seeing her here, looking exactly like she had before she died, quite literally in fact. She was even in the same clothing.

This island was so weird, but he was just going to go with it because it was better than having Lexi still be dead and Damon still be her killer. He'd never forgiven him for that, and if he knew his best friend at all, it'd take a lot for her to forgive him as well, if she ever did.

He knew that Lexi could usually see right through him, which was why he didn't even try to hide the conflict on his face as they reunited. He was incredibly happy to see her, of course he was, but there was still this awful situation with Elena and he couldn't stop thinking about it. "It's so good to see you," he said genuinely nonetheless, wanting to talk more about her and her arrival here but knowing that Lexi wouldn't have it. He smiled fondly when she predictably asked what was up with him, and he shook his head, sticking his hands in his pockets and staring off into the woods. "Well," he started, taking a deep breath and figuring he should just rip it off like a band-aid. "Unfortunately if we're going to focus on me, we can't put him on the back burner. Apparently Elena has feelings for him, too."

Honestly, if Lexi were to be stranded on some bizarre located who-knew-where, she couldn't think of a better person to be stranded with than her best friend. She loved spending time with Stefan and missed him when they said good-bye after his birthday each year. Hopefully now they could really spend some time together since it didn't look like they'd be leaving this island any time soon.

One thing was for sure though, after she helped Stefan fix whatever it was that was wrong, she was going to look for Damon. Then the two of them were going to have a long talk about what really happened on Stefan's birthday and why he tried, or really did, kill her.

To say she was surprised when Stefan told her Elena had feelings for Damon would be an understatement; she was floored. Her brows furrowed in confusion and she chewed her bottom lip as she processed the new information. She thought back to the last conversation she'd had with the girl. It had been about love and, as far as she'd known, they had been talking about Stefan. She'd always been good at reading people, or so she thought, so either she'd been way off or some kind of major game changer had happened. Moving to sit on a fallen tree, she crossed her legs and looked up at Stefan, confusion still evident on her face. "She has feelings for Damon? Where did that come from? She does know you're the nice one, right?"

Stefan had thought that his one-hundred and sixty-second birthday was going to be the last time that Lexi ever found him and pulled him out of his brooding, making sure he had a hell of a day before they went their separate ways again for another year. He didn't know why they'd never just stuck in the same place together, but he supposed that he'd finally gotten his wish to always have Lexi with him, because this island clearly had no intentions of letting any of them go.

It definitely wasn't going to be a pretty sight when Lexi finally confronted Damon, who'd sold her out and then staked her like she was no better than some animal. Stefan still couldn't believe he'd done that to his best friend and then had the gall to act like he was always the one making sacrifices. They'd both made mistakes, of course they had, but neither of them were angels and the attempt at killing Lexi was proof of that.

Stefan saw the confusion on Lexi's face and knew that she'd need to hear more of the story in order to understand, because after all, the last time she'd seen him he and Elena had been going really well. Then Klaus had showed up and everything had gone to shit. "Well, apparently Damon's got other qualities she's interested in," Stefan said with a weak smile at Lexi's joke. He sighed and sat down next to her, then began to explain everything that had happened in the wake of her death, from Klaus killing Jenna to Damon being bitten by a werewolf and Stefan having to sell his soul in order to save him. "I had to leave. If I hadn't, Damon would've died, and as much as he drives me crazy, I couldn't let that happen," he said, brows furrowed and gaze dark with emotion. "Klaus wanted me to become Ripper Stefan. He wanted me to be who I used to be, to shut off my emotions and follow his every order. I am ashamed to admit that I went along with his wishes, albeit with one hell of a fight. You would've been so disappointed in me, Lexi, if you'd seen the things I did."

He swallowed hard and rubbed his hand over his cheek, looking away from her. "While I was away, Damon was there for Elena. He protected her, kept her safe while I was out with Klaus, keeping my word. I'm sure he looked very heroic in Elena's eyes and I guess things just snowballed from there." He sighed. "I'm grateful to him for being there for her. I just wish Elena hadn't fallen for him in the process. But I suppose it's no one's fault but my own for leaving her and becoming the one thing I hate."

It was times like these when Lexi wished she'd have stayed with Stefan instead of letting her wanderlust take over. She wondered how often over the years there had been times like this where he needed her and she hadn't been around. It made her feel a little guilty now, thinking about it. Maybe getting put on this island was her chance to make it up to him and be there for him now. One thing she did know, if that was the reason why, was she wasn't about to blow it; come hell or high water, she was going to help him with his problems.

Lexi knew she wasn't Damon's favorite person and sure as hell hadn't kept her dislike of him a secret either. To be honest, her first impression of him had been a good one, but as time wore on, she came to realize just how dark and tormenting he could really be. Still, she tried to remain civil with him because after all he was Stefan's brother. Thinking about it though, she honestly couldn't come up with a reason as to why he would want her dead.

She sat quietly and listened as Stefan filled her in on the things she had missed. She wasn't surprised to hear that he'd sold himself into slavery to save Damon's life; that's just the way Stefan was, selfless to the core. Always the white knight, he would be willing to do whatever it took to save someone he loved, even if that person didn't necessarily deserve to be saved. Feeling the shame of what he'd rolling off of him in great waves, she reached out and took one of his hands, holding it between both of hers. "Stefan, listen to me, okay? I'm not disappointed in you. I know you, Stefan, probably better than you know yourself and what you did, you did because you love your brother and you wanted to save his life."

She paused, taking a moment to reach out and place her hand on his cheek, turning his face back to her. Now she saw why Elena developed feelings for Damon and it broke her heart to see the pain it was causing her best friend. "I'm sure once she's had some time to think about things, Elena will realize how much you love each other. I saw it clear as day the second I saw the two of you together back in Mystic Falls. She's just confused and mixed up right now, but trust me on this one, okay?" she asked, gently squeezing his hand.

Stefan knew that Lexi was the type of person who couldn't stay tied to one place for long, and honestly he admired her ability to hop from town to town without getting too attached to its residents. Personally Stefan didn't have the same resolve; he got wrapped up in every location he went to, growing close to people that withered away right in front of him every time. No matter how many times he lost friends and family, though, he kept opening his heart to more people and more grief. It was a tough life, but he didn't want to change; he'd already lost his humanity once in the past few months and he most definitely did not want to go back there.

Stefan took a lot of the blame for why Damon was the way he was. After all, he'd been the evil brother once upon a time, the one killing for pleasure and leaving entire cities devastated in his wake. He'd been with Damon's girl, and had eventually been chosen by her as the one she truly loved. He'd gotten them turned into vampires to begin with, a fate that Damon had never wanted. Both of them had made a lot of mistakes over the centuries, but Stefan knew that none of this would have happened if it hadn't been for him. That was a huge part of why he was so forgiving with Damon now, because he knew what he'd been like before Katherine Pierce had come into their lives and he still believed that man was in there somewhere.

Stefan turned to Lexi when she grasped his hand but kept his head hanging low, shame clear in his entire demeanor. He couldn't deny that his throat got tight and his eyes felt wet as she told him she wasn't disappointed in him; he'd been waiting to hear that and he honestly hadn't thought he would. "I did. I did want to save his life," he confirmed, swallowing thickly and clearing his throat. Once he had more composure, he continued, "But I don't think he wanted to live, Lexi. I think he wanted me to let him die. And he's mad that I didn't, that I hurt Elena instead of allowing that bite to kill him."

He finally looked Lexi in the eyes when she turned his face towards hers, and at once he was struck with just how much he'd missed his friend. She was so compassionate, and so forgiving. He could only wish that he'd redeem himself to her and to Elena so that he would actually deserve such kind treatment. "I hope so. I love her, and I just want her to be happy. If I can be the one to make her that way, I'd be ecstatic." He licked over his lips and sighed deeply. "That being said, I don't know how I'm going to get past the knowledge of her feelings for Damon. I don't know how to rebuild what we had when our foundation is now tainted with something that can't just fade overnight. What do you think I should do?"

Lexi knew Stefan still held on to the guilt and the blame over what had happened back in 1864 between him, Damon, and Katherine. There were times when she honestly wondered if he would let it go and fully move on from that dark period in his life. Surely that one selfish act didn't warrant her best friend the kind of self loathing he felt at times. But then again, she knew if the shoe was on the other foot and she was in Stefan's place, she might be acting the very same way.

Lexi hated seeing the tears in Stefan's eyes and they damn near broke her heart. "Stefan, you don't have it in you to sit idly by while someone you love is in pain let alone dying. How could Damon honestly have expected you to just let him die? Things might not have turned out the way you expected, but you did have the best of intentions and that counts for something, Stefan."

Aside from the man she considered the love of her life, she loved Stefan the most out of everyone she knew. She just wanted to see him happy again with light in his eyes instead of the darkness that was in them now. This love triangle with Elena and the Salvatore brothers was a recipe for disaster if she ever saw one; no matter which one she chose, someone was going to get hurt an badly. Giving Stefan a small smile, she took a deep breath before answering him. "I know how cliche this might sound, but maybe you both should give Elena a little time to herself. Something tells she she doesn't even know what she wants right now, not really anyway. She needs to deal with these feelings she has for Damon before she should be doing anything with you. I know that's probably the last thing you want, but I think it might be the best thing for your relationship. And I'm not saying you should leave her alone for years or anything, but maybe give her a couple of days to adjust to you being here and being confronted with two men who are so in love with her."
