SNARC in February: Back to the Roots

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Marc Chagall must have been a wizard. And he knew people who could fly. Look at this and others of his famous paintings.

What I want you to do is what we did when this SNARC contest started: look at this picture and put Snape in it.

Traditionally, you can use ArtPad but any other media is fine, too. We even accept photomanips now!

The winners will be determined by number of comments (other than by the artist ;) ) to each entry. The prize would be a banner made by me unless someone more talented offers to do prize banners for SNARC?

For future challenges: If you would like to host one, or would like to offer a prize for one, contact me.

As usual, please make a new post with your entry, or post it in a comment here, if you don't have a ij account.

Onwards!

The February Challenge: Bullies and Fathers

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
The February Challenge:

Bullies and Fathers

This topic was suggested by [info]mary_j_59. She writes:

What convinces so many people that Snape is a bully by nature, and abusive? And why do people like me - who can see that he actually does bully, and is even abusive on a couple of occasions - insist that, nevertheless, Severus is far more victim than perpetrator, and is neither habitually abusive, nor an habitual bully?

That seems to be the real gulf between the Snape lovers and the Snape haters, and it's a sore point.

And it actually goes along with Snape as a father. I'm sure that those who see Snape as bully would insist that Snape would be an abusive father, whereas I and others see him as struggling to break the chain of abuse -and succeeding. Again, Rowling would like us to see Harry this way, but she never shows us Harry holding back, being sorry, reconsidering his actions - all of which she actually does show us in Severus. So I can't buy the "happy family/Harry as good father" picture she tries to sell us in the epilogue. I can, on the other hand, see Snape as a good father, perhaps most of all because he does have a conscience (however rudimentary - this sets him apart from just about everyone in the Wizarding World) and is not afraid to discipline the children in his care.

I would like to extend this topic to other fathers in the wizarding world. How about James? We know he was a bully, we are being told he was a good father. How do you see it?

How about Remus Lupin who ran away from his responsibility but later totally fell in love with his son?

And Arthur Weasley who is presented as the model father? Some call him hen-pecked, some Molly's eightst child. He certainly seems like the anti-bully. What do you think?

How about Lucius Malfoy? Would Sirius have been a good father or would he have lost interest when the child didn't turn out the way he wanted? Can you think of others? Go for it. As usual, you don't need to stop writing and discussing this as the month ends. You can always write about old challenges.

Monthly Challenges and New Rules

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
A while ago I announced that [info]janus and [info]severed_lies would want to host the mothly challenges and the SNARC contest for a while. This is still planned, but we're not quite there yet. As you may remember, and as information for newcomers: if you have ideas about something you'd like to see here, weekly challenges, contests, games or the like... talk to me and most likely we can do it (if you are willing to do the work ;) ).

For now, we proceed as usual, with monthly challenges set by me. However, there is a change this year (will be in the rules as soon as I rework them). In the past, our changes were always, 'Severus and...' which is fine, but a bit restrictive. I think we can extend this to the wizarding world and anything that interests you, Snape fans, about magic and the wizarding world. Like for example the essay [info]oryx_leucorix recently posted on her journal. If your essay still has a strong Snape element, even better, but it's not really necessary. This is not meant as competition for HP essays. It's meant as a semi-safe place for Snape fans to talk about everything in the Potterverse without having to worry about anti-Snape rants.

Please make your suggestions for future challenges on the suggestion post (link in the news blurb).

Spinners--End deviantart group

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
When deviantArt rolled out their new Groups feature at the end of 2009, a few of us decided to get together and start a Snape club called Spinners--End.

We collect and feature art, fic, and meta that center on Severus Snape as he is characterized in book-canon (rather than movie Snape). All pairings and AU are allowed as long as Snape remains true to his canon description as the sarcastic, unfair, mean, greasy, marvellous, loyal, brave git we all love. Come check us out!

Friday Rec: On the Lam, Severus/Percy

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I'll just quote the author's summary:
When Severus Snape is unexpectedly the victim of a Wizengamot gone awry, he discovers that the wizarding world rallies around its heroes.
-------
Warnings: Slash, explicit sex. Since it's on Occlumency you'll need an account to read it.
On the Lam

A lot of friendship and support besides the main pairing. Most characters more mature than in canon.

Pimping a bit of meta: Dumbledore's Endgame Plans

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I hope this is OK with the rules - it is more about Dumbledore, but obviously Severus is involved.

After 2.5 years I think I finally managed (with the help of others, most notably the sporkers on Death to Capslock to figure out how Dumbledore envisioned the endgame to the Tom Riddle business, as well as why his plan, as it appears from the clues and instructions he gave his various agents, seems so incoherent: I believe he had 2 different, mutually exclusive, plans going on. Some of those clues were meant to promote one plan, some the other.

See Dumbledore's Endgame Plans for details. I'd like to know if this makes any sense.

Gen, snarry and snupin recs from fests and elsewhere...

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Damn, damn, damn, have "misplaced" half this week's recs!!! It included the (almost) last of the snupin_santa recs (still have to read a couple more stories).
From the recs doc I *did* find, there's some snarry fic and art recs, a snape-centric gen rec, and some snupin stories as well as a rec for this intriguing and quirky little snupin series.
So without further delay:

Here's another round of Snupin Santa recs! (There may be some crossover with the rec list I posted on my personal journal, so my apologies if you've seen some of these before.)

Once again, a reminder that you must have an account to comment on the Snupin Santa site, but non-members are welcome to comment on the IJ and LJ entries if they prefer not to sign up.

Happy New Year to all of you!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
This year brings some changes!

Our own [info]severed_lies will host the SNARC contest here, and
our own [info]janus will host the monthly challenges and make the banners.

I'm still preparing the birthday party for our boy over on [info]severusbigbang, and after that I'll make an effort to pretty up the asylum, make the rules a bit clearer and maybe get up to some other mischief. Oh, and there was something else... what was it?

...

Right! Your banners! I'll make all the banners I owe you. ;)

Friday Fic Recs - Stories from snupin_santa

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Happy New Year!
Well, it's been a while, but it's time for me to get back into Friday Fic Recs...

Today's offerings are all from snupin_santa. I haven't finished this year's snupin_santa reading - hell, I'm not even half way through yet, but here a few that jumped out at me. There may be considerable overlap with [info]geri_chan's recs, as I' ve been using her recs and those of [info]r_grayjoy as starting places for my own reading.

I've been broadening my horizons with a short fic or two over at Daily Deviant (longer ones or multiparters, I've been bookmarking for later), and ran across this one. I'm not normally into this pairing or the kinks listed, but it was short so I gave it a try. I thought it was really well done. :) Head the warnings, though!

Friday recs: Snupin Santa

Add to Memories Tell a Friend

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Snupin Santa stories are being posted this month, and you can find links to the fics under the Snupin Santa tags on IJ and LJ. There's a wide range of stories, with more yet to come, and I'm sure that anyone who enjoys Snupin can find something to their liking. I haven't had time to read them all yet, but I am able to make a few short recs:

Snape's (Deliberately Slanted) Memories of Lily

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I ended my last with:

We are totally misjudging Lily based on the “The Prince’s Tale.” Because these were never meant to be Severus’s memories of Lily.

They’re his memories of what went wrong between them.

I want to clarify this last point. And then I’ll be done, really, for quite a while.

The December Challenge

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
This month, we'll take it easy.

Recently, someone told me that there'll be a fest for Severus' 50th birthday on the forum Why Snape?

(It may be an alternative for those of you who don't want to participate at our Severus Big Bang Birthday Bash fest. Why Snape? isn't affiliated with us nor am I in any way involved with it.)

And in that sense I borrow the question:

The December Challenge:

Why Snape?

Tell us what draws you to the character, whether you find him interesting, love him, admire him or why else you are hanging out on a Snape site.

And enjoy the busy holidays.

(I did not forget your banners. They will come. Whistles innocently)

Lily’s Reaction to Sirius’s Furry Little Joke

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Here’s another thing I’d like to drag out from the depths of Sailorum’s Snily post-and-commentary for independent attention.

Most often, when I read something by someone with a viewpoint strongly different from mine, it clarifies my understanding of how they view (or misinterpret—evil grin) canon, but it has a hard time altering MY view. But sometimes someone offers an insight that just reverses things for me.

The insight that Lily almost certainly was a prefect in SWM altered my perceptions of her behavior very negatively.

However, one of Sailorum’s responses to a comment has the exact opposite effect on my view of Lily in the Mulciber/Potter argument. Like 00sevvie and others, I’d felt Lily to be cold and distant in that scene, not responding like a true friend, for not expressing overt sympathy and horror over her supposed best friend’s near-murder (and for thinking Mulciber’s failed prank, whatever it was, on a par with death-by-werewolf).

But I see now that I was falling into the old trap of assuming that what I knew, a character knew, and judging them on the basis of my knowledge. (Just like all the fen who think that OF COURSE Snape knew all along that the Dark Lord was an Evul sociopath—I mean, it’s obvious in retrospect, right? How could Sev not have known at 15 that this Dark Lord wizard was Bad News?) I’ve been committing that same sin with Lily.

For here’s )

More on Lily's behavior in SWM: Lily the Prefect?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
There was one comment I wanted to pull out from the recent Lily threads for separate discussion.

I’m glad Hwyla pointed out that Lily almost had to have been a prefect in SWM. I’d been wanting someone to bring that up.

Warning: Lily-bashing ahead. At least I can't come up with any way to have Lily look good in SWM if she's really a prefect as well as Snape's supposed best friend.

Is it credible )

Severus and the Dark Arts

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I posted a long (10,000+ word) rambling essay on the Dark Arts, Dark Magic, Dark wizards, and the inconsistency with which these various terms seem to be used in the WW on my lj: “Dark Magic Doth Never Prosper.”
http://terri-testing.livejournal.com/28365.html#cutid1

What is relevant for looking at “Severus and the Dark Arts” is the central distinction I made: that the portrayal of Dark magic in the Potterverse lacks coherence partly because different groups in the WW are actually using the adjective “dark” in different, and sometimes mutually incompatible, ways.

To recapitulate my main argument (so no one here has to wade through my interminable babble to understand what I want to say about Severus): I posit that in the British WW there are at least three distinct groups applying the adjective “Dark” to magic with different meaning. (Cut here for those who don’t want to read the original.)

The first group )

Which brings me finally to Severus.
