Severus and the Dark Arts

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I posted a long (10,000+ word) rambling essay on the Dark Arts, Dark Magic, Dark wizards, and the inconsistency with which these various terms seem to be used in the WW on my lj: “Dark Magic Doth Never Prosper.”
http://terri-testing.livejournal.com/28365.html#cutid1

What is relevant for looking at “Severus and the Dark Arts” is the central distinction I made: that the portrayal of Dark magic in the Potterverse lacks coherence partly because different groups in the WW are actually using the adjective “dark” in different, and sometimes mutually incompatible, ways.

To recapitulate my main argument (so no one here has to wade through my interminable babble to understand what I want to say about Severus): I posit that in the British WW there are at least three distinct groups applying the adjective “Dark” to magic with different meaning. (Cut here for those who don’t want to read the original.)

The first group )

Which brings me finally to Severus.

totalreadr requested that I post my extensive Severus and Lily thoughts here on Snapedom, as a meta essay...so here they are (I hope nobody minds, considering the recent kerfluffle). This can also be my response to the December '07 challenge. ;)

Feel free to skip this if you're tired of reading and/or talking about Severus/Lily...I'm not judging ;) )

SNARC: A Special Challenge!

SNARC has been quiet, but never fear, it isn't dead.

this is, of course, in celebration of Severus' 50th birthday on January 9th, 2010.

IGNORE THE TROLL!

What do you expect if you link to such an article on HP Essays and want to discuss it?
Randomneses has been here before, didn't like it, and went elsewhere, fair enough.

We want to talk about Snape stuff undisturbed here, they want to do their stuff elsewhere, let them. There will always be a few who can't respect this. This, here, is not a general Harry Potter discussion group. It is a group for Snape fans, where Snape fans can be reasonable or not, whatever they prefer. This is not a place for 'the enlightened' to come and tell us how delusional we all are.

But don't fall for the trolls and let yourself be provoked.

The rules demand that anonymous posters sign with initials or a name.
Those who don't, may be new here, and can be reminded kindly. If they still insist on posting anonymously, they are trolls by default who are too cowardly to wank in the open.

Do you really want to react to their drivel? No? Thought so...

No, I won't turn anonymous commenting off. It would leave several of our friends out of the loop, and no troll is worth that.

(I've turned the comments off here, because I'm too busy at the moment to discuss and explain why some posts are wank and others aren't... please, those of you who've seen this before, remind people on the threads to ignore the trolls.)

It's Friday morning here in Australia, and I'm reccing this essay:

http://randomneses.livejournal.com/479704.html

It's about the Snape/Lily pairing, and why there's so much Lily-bashing (apparently) that goes on in the Snapefen camp. I don't entirely agree with it, but it's thought-provoking,to say the least.

I look forward to hearing what other members think!

Self-Pimp: A Part of Me (Professor!Snape/Student!Snape, NC-17)

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Title:A Part of Me
Author: PhantomTF
Pairing/Characters: Professor!Snape/Student!Snape
Rating: Chapters range from G to NC-17.
Category: Angst
Word Count: 70,200, or 153 pages in Microsoft Word
Warnings: character death, brief torture, dark themes, sex between two men who are essentially the same person, teacher/student relationship
Disclaimer: The boys are not mine, only this crazy tale is
Summary: A Potions accident splits Snape into two people - a dour professor and an angsty rebellious teen. Both must now coexist at Hogwarts and in a time of war.
Author's note: I’m certain some variation of this concept has been done before, but hopefully at least the story itself will be original enough to please.

This story is AU, replacing the events in Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows. I will make reference to items, events and concepts that came up in Half-Blood Prince and Deathly Hallows – they will be altered to fit into this new storyline, but there are still possible spoilers.

Although the majority of this story is PG-13 at best, there are definitely some NC-17 scenes as well.

“Snape” is usually used to refer to Professor Snape, and “Severus” is usually used to refer to student Snape.

For anyone who is squicked by a sexual relationship between the two Snapes, I will be posting an expurgated version on Fanfiction.net at some point.

Chapters can be accessed through my LJ account, or at http://phantomtf.livejournal.com if that link does not work.

Feedback is always wanted!

Friday rec: Snonks!

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Took a break from fic writing today, to try out some different shipping options for Severus (just for the heck of it). My fevered brain happened upon the idea of Snape/Tonks, thought it would be amusing, and went in search of fic. Found some and some art too...they amused me greatly (I LOL'd at the fic - go read it, it's funny), so...I share. :)

Title: Whine
Characters: Snape/Tonks
Author: kerrymdb
Prompt: wine
Rating: T
Genre: humour
Word Count: 1,800 words
Summary: Being stuck in a dark wine cellar with a beautiful witch is most men's dream. But Severus Snape is certainly not most men…
Author’s Notes: Set during Order of the Phoenix. This was written for [info]colourful_bat's Winter Solstice Challenge.

Link to teh fic: http://kerrymdb.livejournal.com/306454.html#cutid1

Here's some art (it's really cute, and there's some Snupin in there too): http://xterm.livejournal.com/118721.html#cutid1

Enjoy fellow Snapers, and if anyone has any favorite Snonks recs, please do lay them on me. ;)

Fiction rec

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I recently emailed Bloodcult of Freud to ask if there was any chance of “Seven Preposterous Things” being finished. The author pled real life and other writing, but also said, “The dwindling feedback was a factor in the stalling of the story.” You have to join Digital Quill to leave a review (which wasn’t always the case--as I pointed out to BcoF a possible reason for dwindling). However, you can, as I belatedly realized, email BcoF directly with feedback. It’s a marvelous AU (from the end of HBP)—featuring Severus/Hermione and Draco/Millicent. Great characterizations (Millie is the best, but they’re all good), wonderful dialogue, an interesting and different Pureblood culture, a plot that twists from hysterically funny to tragic to sexy unexpectedly… really you want to read it. And having started it, you will, really truly, need to see it carried to completion. So go read it, and then let Bloodcult know you’re not content to be abandoned. BCoF’s own warnings on the story were:
Dark Comedy and Angst. Graphic Sex, Character Death, Pimples, Gore and Unflattering Characterizations.
Not a one of which were inaccurate. So now go read. Or reread. Bloodcult of Freud, Seven Preposterous Things

This actor could be YoungAdult Sev?

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I was watching a programme on television tonight (Misommer Murders) and was struck by the young actor playing the local poor-but-honest farm boy about to marry the squire's daughter. I took down his name as the credits rolled, it was Mel Raido, who I'd never heard of before. He's an English actor who has been in a few films in the past few years.

Have a look at this piccy and tell me if this is, or is not, young Severus Snape? Perhaps just after leaving Hogwarts. Or is he too pretty? Anyway, he's my Friday rec, LOL!

Not a response to the challenge, eh, but this jsut wanted to be written.

There is an argument that is often made by Snape detractors stating that Severus is selfish and morally degraded because he only asked for Lily's life, and not those of James and Harry as well. I was going to post a short comment regarding this argument in a discussion on terri_testing's LJ, but it turned into something a bit...longer. 7500 words longer, to be exact. I'll have to post it in parts. Usual apologies for insane length and all.

The November Challenge

Severus and the Dark Arts!

Was he fascinated by the Dark Arts? Did he love them, as Harry suspected? Was he seduced by them?

Or did he fear them? Was that why he became such an outstanding DADA teacher? Was he driven to defend himself because he was almost killed by a Dark Creature, Remus Lupin in his werewolf form?

Was he so good at DADA because he loved or feared the Dark Arts? Or did he have to be interested to endear himself to his Dark Lord?

Where did he learn about them? Did he read about them in his mother's books? Did she teach him? Or did he learn them in Slytherin?

Snape's career choices sans Voldemort

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
I've been wondering lately what Snape would have done with his life had he not come under the influence of Voldemort. I doubt he'd have gone into teaching at all. But it occurred to me that we really are not shown such a lot of choice of career in the wizarding world, and this is probably because of the fact that Harry is concentrating on other more pressing matters during his years at Hogwarts. But the Ministry seems to be the big employer, with a few other bits and pieces such as dress shops (Madame Malkin's), inn-keepers (Tom and Rosmerta), Borgin and Burkes, Ollivanders, etc. None of which I can really see Snape working in (although there's a few Snapefen I imagine who wouldn't mind him measuring us up for a new dress at Madame Malkin's LOL!)

I'd love to know of other options the members here might come up with for a satisfying career for Severus. I've written one fic "Back to Basics" where he abandons the wizarding world and lives out his life amongst the Muggles, running a string of naturopathy shops. Of course he'd be successful since his potions would work!

But that then gave rise to another question: would magic potions work on Muggles? We see Mr Weasely in hospital not responding at all well to stitches after Nagini attacked him, so I wondered if the same held true for Muggles' response to potions.

I look forward to the birth of plot bunnies!

Friday Recs

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
Haven't done recs for a while so this time I thought I'd do something a little different. I want to rec two comms.

The first, [info]severus_sighs is all Snape, all the time. They are currently posting how each of the authors sees their Snape. It's really marvelous to see so many different versions of the character we all love.

The second is [info]daily_deviant. Here is the character tag for Severus.

In the last few months there have been several pieces of gorgeous art-I am particularly enamoured of NWS Snarry Writhe by [info]fanlay and NWS Snupin Pull it Tight by [info]acatnamedeaster.

Also found, a myriad of delicious fic pairings-[info]r_grayjoy's Snupin Everything He Has to Give, [info]purplefluffycat's Severus/Albus//Severus/Albus/Minerva Dinner and a Show, and [info]snegurochka_lee's marvelous Snack Kinky, With a Bit of Discipline.

A couple of recs, SSHG

Add to Memories Tell a Friend
A Beach in Ireland by Bambu. Post war. On her birthday Hermione runs across someone she hasn't seen in a long time. NC-17. I like how relaxed Severus is, how Hermione can view canon events more critically. And a Wizarding World in which Arthur and Lucius are collaborating towards a shared goal is a better place.

Guard... Check... Mate by Bambu. Canon compliant until the end of OOTP, non-compliant with HBP or DH. Starts a few days before the end of Hermione's seventh year, but takes place mostly after leaving Hogwarts. Dumbledore attempts to sacrifice both Hermione and Severus for the greater good, but they find out. Warnings for torture. Rating R.

This was the first serious Evil!Dumbledore story I read. I found it before DH and couldn't believe Dumbledore would be *that* thoughtless towards his soldiers. Now I know Bambu had him just right. And extra points for having the characters read Machiavelli's 'The Prince' in a fic written before HBP came out.
