Summary: Circumstances have simply sucked Severus dry.
Author Note Written for atypicalsnowman's DH Challenge. Um... it's the first thing I have written in months, but my ol bff's assure me it makes sense. I am trusting their judgement. How's that for a ringing endorsement? *grin*
It is far too dry the night he kills his mentor.
He remembers running, the adrenaline rush of fear, moving so quickly across the grounds as he drags Draco from one mockery of safety to another. He can feel moisture sliding down his back and knows it to be his own sweat. It sickens him when his insides are as filthy as his outsides, and he takes it out on Potter.
Then the boy is on his knees, the mud soaking through his jeans and leaving wet streaks on his arms. Severus is jealous. He has been pushed to the edge, sucked dry, and all to protect, all to… Potter is absorbing the moisture and Severus is so dry his skin burns.
“Why?” Is Potter even aware of his tears?
“You are pathetic.”
There is nothing more to say, he has nothing left to give, and so he turns away, leaves Potter to the painfully sacrificed damp of the night.
It does not take long until Draco no longer smiles, until the circles under his eyes are deep and painful, a dried-out well of lost ideals. Severus can relate, knows the boy is hoping for a pearl of wisdom, a trickle of humanity, but he is a husk. A shell of a being waiting for the rain to revive him. The night Charity Babbage is murdered he lets Draco sleep on his couch, assigns homework and ignores the tears when the boy wakes up screaming in the dead of night.
