Boat Building
[info]thankyouforthe
2010-08-21 01:06 am UTC (link)
[Over at this corner there is a blond little child surrounded by various tools, hammers, saws, chisels, awls, tongs and other things you can expect to find in a toolbox. There is also lots of different materials; reeds and bamboo, wood in various shapes from mushroom trees, cords to tie things together with, cloth that could be used for sails, if it reasonably could be fund in sabra, it's there. Finally there is also a water filled tub with a sign saying "floating test".]

Build best boat. I watch.

[Has made a reed and cord boat that actually looks pretty decent. There are some cruder figurea of blanks fashioned out of more reeds tied with cord and dressed in very roughly made shirts; all of them appear to be Hydraculans apart from one dressed in black. A few have splinters of wood stuck in their "hands" as makeshift knives, and two at either side have longer pieces of wood in their hands to act as oars.

The boat itself has been coated thinly with clay to help stop leakage. It lists to the side with more figures some, but it floats alright.]

[after some time and some playing with blocks ... it looks a little like this -- all solid blocks of wood kind of sort of nailed together why would anyone give a 3 year old a hammer and nail and leave him alone to build with it orz. Nails are sticking half out of it all over the place. It looks really horrible. The good news is, even if it capsizes, it probably won't sink until the wood's completely waterlogged.]

[Has made a little sailboat that lists to one side and skipped the drawing game to have time to get it finished. It matches his sketches, more or less, though he's simplified it to base, mast, and sail to save time.]

[The base isn't hollowed but flat, slightly off-center, and stained in a few spots with blood from where he cut himself with the saw. The mast is mostly straight, hung with a single sail that's a bit frayed on the edge; a purple peacock has been painted on one side, a childish, simplified approximation of the one that's usually on his shoulder. To be accommodating, he's fixed the parts together with small nails.]

[And what we have here is a Gondola from old timey Venice. Not that you might tell the time period, as it has simply taken it's form. What we have is a gondola made of mostly reeds tied tightly together to keep the water out. There is bamboo along the lip of it and on the bottom to make a frame the reeds are placed into and mushroom wood is cut to match the rudder and ornate little carvings on the gondola type boat. It even has an extra reed laid across it to stand for the pole of the gondola boat.]

[And it totally floats.]
