Although downtown Los Angeles was filled to bursting with rush hour traffic at this time in the afternoon, the outskirted, lesser populated area to the northern side of the heavy populated city was definitely not. In fact, there were very few who ventured this close to the mountains that helped divide the great expanse of Los Angeles County. Save for a few neighborhoods scattered sporadically about, and a couple of old homesteads that had been built long before the metropolis had even begun to boom, there weren't very many people who could call this area home.
Oh, granted, there were always motorists who were all too willing to take a drive down the wide-open roads. Mostly teenagers, out for a joyride, and the occassional tourist who had either become lost or had decided on a more scenic route during their travels. Ultimately, though, it was the largest uninhabited around. Quiet, too. The lack of traffic, lack of commercial real estate, lack of pretty much anything beyond mountain ranges, open fields, and downtown looming in the fairly near distance, made for quite a serene spot.
The serenity, however, was suddenly shattered this seemingly lazy afternoon in what constituted Los Angeles' country side. A bright light appeared in the sky - blinding in its intensity as it began to grow in both width and length until it seemed to consume the entire landscape for as far as the eye could see. An optical illusion, of course, but it was enormous and, all too soon, was accompanied by the howling of a wind unlike anything more residents had ever heard.
It was an arctic wind, in fact. Freezing enough to chill a person clear to their bone in seconds flat, with enough snow and flecks of ice to cover them head to toe in the same amount of time. A frightening sound for anyone who had never before heard it and an even more frightening sound for those who had. They, after all, recognized it for what it was worth. The wrath of nature in the harshest of climates, with no respect for any living thing and certainly no intention of showing mercy upon those unfortunate enough to cross its path.
And so it was that the sunny, balmy weather over that expanse of California land was suddenly and inexplicably blotted out for the briefest of moments that seemed to stretch on for an eternity. The ground became covered in a fine sheen of snow that melted nearly as soon as it touched the heat of the earth and the bright light grew even brighter, the gap growing and growing until, quite suddenly, it all stopped.
As abruptly as it had begun, the phenomenon was over. Quiet once more ruled the land. The snow melted into puddles before seeping into the earth. The sky returned to its brilliant shade of blue, the sun once more reigned supreme over the land.
There, standing in the midst of that stretch of nothingness, stood a solitary figure who hadn't stood there before.
Ice was sliding from his body in sheets, his hair was dripping with partially frozen flakes of snow fall. His legs buckled as a shiver seemed to consume him down to his very soul and he collapsed to the ground, hands and knees pressing painfully into the rocky dirt. He trembled once more and raised his head, body still far too chilled to even contemplate allowing him to stand. His eyes scanned the area in the desperate search of some sort of clue for this madness. Something, anything, to explain that which he couldn't seem to comprehend. That was when he realized he was not alone. There was someone else there with him, someone who looked strange and foreign, yet at the same time not.
He stared for a moment, sucking in large, shuddering breaths as his body continued to be rocked by chills, until he finally realized just who it was he was looking at. Granted he didn't look as he should. He didn't look as he should at all, but the man knew it was him as surely as he knew he was himself.
And for the first time in over a billion years, Skyfire was able to speak.
"Starscream?"
