OPEN THANKSGIVING THREAD
WHO: OPEN TO ALL
WHAT: Thanksgiving, 2018
WHERE: Everywhere.
WHEN: Thanksgiving, 2018! ;)
RATING: TBA
STATUS: Open to all!

HOW THIS WORKS: This post is completely open. Do you want your character to celebrate Thanksgiving; or did you maybe want them to organize a small Thanksgiving celebration at their current safehouse? Did you just want them to reminisce about Thanksgivings past with a family member or friend? That's what this post is for!

If your post is for specific characters only, mark it in the subject. For example, if Lucy and I were to post with Allie and Ollie, we would put Allie and Ollie in the subject. But if we wanted to leave it open for others? We would say Allie, Ollie and OPEN.

Go crazy! And Happy Thanksgiving, folks! ♥

Thanksgiving had always been a big deal for the Stone family. That and Christmas were really the only two holidays where everyone, wherever they were, came together to celebrate the holidays that came at the end of the year. Preparing the meal had been as much fun as sitting down to eat it. Everyone laughing and sharing stories.

After the outbreak, though, things unsurprisingly changed. For the first year after she'd been bitten, Leah hadn't wanted anything to do with the holidays. Nor, honestly, had she been in the mood for spending time with her family. This year and the year before, however, she'd been willing to join her brother and sisters.

Kori had wanted it most of all. For them to sit down to a meal together. Like old times. Leah didn't hold much hope that they'd ever be able to recreate the warm, fuzzy feelings that holiday family meals often brought, but she was willing to try. For Kori.

It took a bit of searching, but Leah eventually located her youngest sister in a quiet area of Madison Square. Food was laid out on a makeshift table. Four chairs in position, only one of them occupied.

Leah's eyes rested on Kori. "Am I too late to join?"

Kori looked up at the sound of approaching footsteps. She was a little surprised that the first person to join her was Leah. Of all of her siblings he'd thought either Lilah or Brandon would join her first not Leah. But then that could just be the fact that Kori was almost entirely positive Leah hated her these days.

Kori shook her head, "No. Have you see Brandon or Lilah?" Being alone with her sister anymore left her feeling a little uncomfortable. Like she didn't quite know what she could or should or shouldn't say to Leah. "Happy Thanksgiving?" The words hanging awkwardly after she spoke them. Oh yes this was going to be a fun holiday meal.

Kori's reaction made Leah wonder if her presence had been expected — or even wanted. That was fair. She wasn't always kind or warm toward her youngest sister, and on good days, it made her feel like a real heel. Leah dropped her gaze for a moment, fiddling with the idea of turning around and leaving. Kori didn't deserve to feel uncomfortable during the holidays.

"No, I haven't." Having Brandon and Lilah here would've made things easier. That hurt; the fact that her little sister was afraid of being in the same room — area, rather — as her. Leah had brought it on herself, though. Times like these, she was willing to silently put all the blame on herself.

Kori wished her a Happy, if awkward, Thanksgiving, and the oldest Stone sibling managed to muster up a half-hearted smile. "Happy Thanksgiving, Kor." Leah moistened her lips before adding, "Do you want me to leave? I'm sure Brandon or Lilah will be along soon..."

In truth Kori wasn't sure if she wanted her sister around. It wouldn't be so bad if Leah didn't start treating her like she wasn't wanted around when their brother and sister arrived. It was just weird being just the two of them.

Nodding Kori tried to hide a sigh at her missing siblings. Things were going to be so painfully awkward after not much longer at this rate. She wasn't scared so much as concerned. Leah had a habit of just being generally cold and icy and little less than caring about her that bothered her about being alone with Leah.

She thought about it for a long moment. "No. I can't eat all this alone if Lilah and Brandon never show." Which was possible Kori's expectations for her siblings weren't very high these days. But it would be a waste to make so much food and then have to throw the majority of it away so Leah might as well stay if only to help her eat it.

It was a mistake showing up, if only for the fact that things were so precarious. But Leah found herself unable to leave. As painful as it was, she wanted to be here. She wanted to make it work. Maybe it was a residual desire to have things be like they'd been the Thanksgiving before everything went to hell. Those memories were bittersweet.

"Kor, I..." Leah's words faltered. Ducking her head, she swallowed and tried again. "I didn't come here to fight with you." I want to be here. She didn't say the words aloud, though. Comments like that were an easy way to drudge up bad feelings.

Approaching the table, she took the seat to the left of her sister, crossing her legs at the ankle. She took a breath and let it out slowly, a genuine smile coming with it. "You did a great job setting this all up."

Kori stared at her for moment expression carefully blank. Personally she highly doubted that. Leah spent how much of their time after being reunited blaming her and yelling at her? More than Kori cared to remember. It was just so much easier to distrust Leah's motives. At least then Leah couldn't hurt her again or leave her again. "I know." She said in response directly contrasting her own train of thought. If she was going to make an effort to be human Kori could make an effort to not want to run in the opposite direction.

Kori smiled at the compliment. She'd tried very hard to bring as much authenticity to this Thanksgiving as possible. "Thanks. It wasn't easy." She stated off hand.

Silence floated between them after that and Kori looked around for her other siblings. When neither magically appeared she bit her lip and turned her attention to Leah, "Should we start without them?" Not that she wanted to, but she didn't want to sit there waiting for people that might not show up either. If Leah hadn't shown up when she had Kori probably would have started without all three of them before much longer and then let whatever orphans were nearby have at the meal.

Leah nodded. Whether or not Kori truly believed her, at least now she knew. Leah really didn't want to fight.

Seeing her sister smile brought a genuine, albeit small, smile to her own face. "I'm sure it wasn't. You did what you could, though, and I'm sure it all tastes great."

The silence was heavy. Leah almost wished Kori had provoked her into a yelling match. Anything would've been easier than this. She traced the edge of her plate with her finger, glancing up when her sister asked if they should start without Brandon and Lilah. She nodded. "If we don't, we could be waiting forever, and my stomach's already growling." Besides that, eating would give them more of a distraction from how awkward things were.

Kori bit her lip and nodded unable to meet her sisters eyes. It wasn’t every day that Leah came so close to giving Kori a compliment and it felt weird to Kori. Although back before all this Kori wouldn’t have felt this way. She wouldn’t find it odd or partially embarrassing. But this wasn’t back before the world ended and that sucked. “Thanks.” She murmured.

As much as it pained Kori to start with part of the family still missing she nodded in agreement. She didn’t want to get in the way of Leah and food. Not when she never could tell just what would set her off anymore. And food on Thanksgiving had this quality that tended toward putting anyone into a food coma with a heavy desire to sleep and well that wouldn’t be such a bad thing if it would keep the tenuous peace a little longer.

“They can just dig in when they get here.” And she would have started serving herself but she waited to see what Leah did first. She didn’t want to start eating before Leah said grace if somewhere since the last time she saw her Leah had found God. Not that she really thought that likely in this world but well it could have happened or something.

Was she trying too hard? That had to be it; had to be why her sister was so tense. The little girl who used to giggle and beg the twins for the chance to help out in the kitchen for the Thanksgiving meal was no longer there. In her place, was an older girl, who no longer trusted the world, and for that, Leah was partially to blame. Her smile wilted, yet at the same time she tried to keep up appearances. This was why yelling at Kori was always easier. It made them both feel less vulnerable.

"Did you invite them? Remind them to come?" She asked, her voice carefully neutral. It wouldn't surprise her to learn that Kori had specifically invited Lilah and Brandon, and neglecting to send one to her. Surprising? No. Hurtful? Yes. Did Leah deserve it? Hell yes.

It had been years since Leah had felt the desire to perform her customary Buddhist meal blessing. It wasn't that it was inappropriate, though that was part of it. It simply didn't matter to her anymore.

With a plastic fork, Leah began helping herself to a slice of the fried spam and the vegetables, using the distraction of loading her plate to try and come up with a conversation starter that wouldn't end badly. Nothing came to mind.

"So, how are those kids you look after?" Not a safe topic by any means, but it was something, and it showed an interest in what Kori had been up to.

"Of course I did." She responded her voice taking on a defensive edge. Why on Earth would she willingly subject her to this amount of awkwardness without Lilah and Brandon? At least when they were around it was easier for both of them to hide the fact that they barely would say five words to each other. Not that Lilah or Brandon weren't aware that they barely spoke but at least they appeared normal to everyone else when the four of them were together.

Taking her cue from Leah, Kori to began filling her plate. Well not exactly filling she wanted to make sure her siblings got their fill. She'd eat whatever leftovers. She was honestly a little sick of looking at it. Curse of being the cook or something. So when her plate finally returned to it's spot on the make shift table it was more vegetables and bread than anything else.

"They're great. They've made it through fall okay and now with a little lucky the littlest ones will be okay through the winter." She said without even thinking. The kids were the one thing that made Kori feel good most days. The only thing she actually trusted. Kids were so innocent, they hadn't learned duplicity, or how to be generally evil. She loved them, and in some ways she thought of them as her own kids. She'd long since given up on ever having her own, especially with how the world was now.

Before the world ended, Brandon had always been a fan of Thanksgiving. The spirit of it only had part to do with that fact, because it was little secret that he was one of the rare types who was thankful for everything every day, not just on one specific day. Or, he had been anyway.

They didn't live in that world anymore.

The way he saw holidays—the way he saw the world in general, really—had changed the day that Leah had been bitten.

Now, the holiday that he'd always considered to be his favorite (even more than Christmas, somehow) was more of a burden. They didn't live in a world where the biggest issue with travel was the five-o-clock rush or how many cars they could pass before they had to make lane changes. No, now it was about the fact that you couldn't even cross the road without the threat of death. And because of that (and a couple slightly more secret reasons of his own), Brandon almost hadn't shown up to this little makeshift family holiday.

But here he was, after braving the holiday supply run, standing in Madison Square and shaking a little snow off of his hat. It was now or never.

"Hey girls," Brandon said, approaching his two sisters. "Didn't miss too much, did I?"

Leah pursed her lips when Kori snapped at her, but she nodded, taking the answer for what it was. Lilah and Brandon had gotten formal invitations, but she hadn't. Okay. That was understandable. Leah hadn't exactly been a huge fan of holidays since the outbreak began.

Eating was a good distraction. It didn't escape her notice that Kori seemed to be following her lead, ever on edge because of Leah's presence. Leah pretended she didn't notice. It wouldn't do any good to bring up the subject. Perfect way to start up an argument she didn't want to have today.

Kori spoke fondly of the children she looked after, and Leah nodded absently, feigning interest while trying to keep her thoughts from darkening. Kori had every right to enjoy what she could in this post-apocalyptic world, but did it really have to involve taking care of kids? Honestly, it was part of the reason Leah avoided interactions with Kori.

She was saved from having to form a response by the arrival of Brandon. She slid a forkfull of spam into her mouth to silence the loud breath of relief that wanted to escape.

"Not much at all," she said, pointing with her fork at one of the empty chairs. "Sit before everything gets cold."

Kori's expression brightened when Brandon appeared. It wasn't a secret that Kori tended toward preferring the company of her brother. But she did at least try to control herself when she got up to give him a hug. She really didn't want Leah making a snide comment about how much more excited she was to see their brother. They just needed to make it a couple hours and then they could go back to ignoring each other from opposite ends of the safe house.

Leah's absent nod barely even registered on Kori's radar, she was used to her comments on the kids going over her sister's head like a lead balloon. And maybe she got a little perverse pleasure out of how it hurt Leah. It was really tiny but it was there and on those nights where she was being truthful about how she felt that tiny part killed her too. Just because Leah hated her didn't mean she had to sink to her level.

"Yeah we were just..." She paused for a moment searching for the right word, "talking is all." She gave him a bright smile and light nudge toward the table. "What Leah said. Spam is gross once it's cold you know that."

Brandon didn't know why he hadn't noticed the tension before he got closer, but now that he was there, it was practically palpable. He frowned. The end of the world was tough enough without his sisters at each other's throats (without being at each other's throats) all the damn time. Of course, both of them went the denial route, claiming that he hadn't missed much of anything, and he just nodded once, letting them think he was fooled.

He was sure Leah would see through it, even if Kori didn't.

He hugged Kori back, keeping that happy calm face on and released her, leaning down to kiss Leah on the forehead in greeting. No, they weren't exactly a Super Happy and Functional Family anymore, but that didn't mean that she still didn't mean the world to him.

"Good," was all he said before he took a seat at Leah's command. He stared at the table, hiding an internal cringe at the Spam that sat there. Brandon's distaste for the stuff wasn't a secret, but nowadays beggars couldn't really be choosers, right? That didn't mean that he was going to subject his internal organs to the eternal preservation that went with ingesting even a bite of spam, however. The thought made him sick.

He noticed an empty seat on the other side of the table and looked around. "Anyone know where Lilah is?" he asked, dutifully ignoring the Spam and instead filling his plate with the vegetables and other things.

It had been a long time since Kori had hugged her like that. Again, Leah's attention remained on her plate, as if Spam and vegetables were the most fascinating things ever. Brandon could keep the hugs. That was fine. Whatever. With all (or most) of the Stones together, it was always a tossup as to whether the tension would thicken or be broken. This might just be one of those times it became unbearable.

His greeting made her smile in spite of herself, and in response she grasped his wrist, affectionately but firmly urging him to sit down. She brushed at the snow he'd missed on his shoulder, a silent way of saying I'm glad you're here.

The look Brandon gave the plate of Spam brought a smirk to Leah's face. Her gaze flicked to Kori, a subconscious need to share the amusement, but it disappeared the moment she saw the disconnected expression on Kori's face. Lilah would've shared in the entertainment, no matter how uncomfortable the meal was.

"Don't forget the Spam," she said innocently to her brother. "Our sister went to the trouble of cooking it for us." Leah wasn't exclusively a vegetarian. She enjoyed turkey and chicken. Spam, on the other hand? Well, she wasn't going to be picky, and besides, Spam didn't look at her with hatred. Or maybe it did. At least she could get revenge on the Spam by eating it. Problem easily solved.

Brandon asked where their other sister was and Leah shrugged. "Haven't seen her. Kori said she invited her, though."

Kori remained more or less oblivious that Brandon knew they weren't being truthful. She chose to remain that way it was easier to believe that he didn't know. It made things a little less awkward. In her mind anyway.

Taking her seat again Kori shared in Leah's amusement about half a second too late. Her thoughts having been elsewhere at first. It wasn't that Kori had wanted to put Spam out as the meat but it was all she'd been able to get. And while she wasn't exactly picky about what she ate anymore she just couldn't look at or think of eating it right now. It was bad enough she felt like she smelled like the stuff as it was.

"I would have left it out but Thanksgiving sort of requires a meat of some kind." She explained with an apologetic shrug at both of them. She never liked the processed can of meat herself but when the ladies in the kitchen were being stuck up she-bitches Kori took what she could get away with when they were watching the pantry like a hawk. She'd pay them back for the bit of thievery she'd resorted to, but she'd much rather the majority of this awkwardness wasn't public to the rest of the people in the safehouse.

She picked at her vegetables a bit. Stabbing the carrot cubes with her fork and looking at the orange line on the tine before eating it. Silently she was congratulating herself on turning this meal into one of the awkwardest in the last half decade. But at least it didn't involve dishes of food being thrown... yet. That might come later.

"She said she would be here. It's possible she got distracted." She said with sigh. She wanted every one together. It wasn't that much to ask for. Just a single block of time to see their faces and make sure they hadn't been maimed and hadn't told her before they went back to doing whatever they did the rest of the year.

Oh, she had to be kidding. Brandon sat and was planning to just let the "meat" go ignored. He was completely satisfied with the rest of it right now and he was sure that because Kori knew of his aversion to the slimy, fat-ridden, preservative-ridden garbage, she wouldn't be too offended if Brandon continued to ignore it. But Leah called his attention to it, and he turned his head, glaring at her for a half second before turning the glare back down to the "meat" and letting it double.

He was barely able to bite back a comment about it not being meat, but he did. His eyes turned back to Leah, a "you can't be serious" look on his face, but eventually he nodded in spite of himself and gathered one slice—and only one slice—of the fake meat. "Only because I need the protein," he said, staring at it on his plate.

It looked no more appetizing now than it had before the end of the world, and Kori was genuinely lucky that he loved her as much as he did because he wouldn't be touching it otherwise. And he was fairly certain that the grimace on his face when he shoveled the first bite into his mouth said exactly that. "S'okay, Kori. You did the best you could with what you had. S'not your fault this god-awful shit is the best thing you could find."

The talk turned to Lilah, though, and he arched an eyebrow. He wasn't as close to Lilah as he was to Leah and Kori, but the fact that she wasn't there right then was worrisome. "You think I should go look for her?" he asked.

Her intent had been to tease Brandon, not belittle Kori's efforts at putting together a meal for them. Leah's smile, small though it was, was apologetic. "The Spam is fine, Kor. Like he said, you did a great job with what you could get."

She quirked a brow at Brandon, waiting to see how he would react to her innocent remark. When he reached for a slice of Spam, Leah couldn't help but laugh. "Atta boy," she said, using her fork to slice off another bite of Spam for herself, followed by a sip of water.

Kori mentioned the possibility of Lilah having gotten sidetracked by something, and Leah nodded her agreement. As twins, their connection to one another might not have been as strong as other twins, but it was still there. If Lilah was in trouble, Leah would feel it. She shook her head when Brandon suggested he go look for her. That would involve leaving her and Kori alone with each other again.

"She's not in danger, else I'd know about it. And if she did get distracted, it's probably something important. You know she never misses a holiday meal, if it can be helped."

Kori shook her head at both of them. They didn't need to apologize for their comments on the Spam. "It's fine. Really." She said. It wasn't like either of them could do anything about what she could and couldn't get anyway.

Grinning Kori gave her brother a pat on the shoulder for being a trooper. "If I had been able to find a bottle of wine this would be cause for a toast." She teased. It wasn't every day she was able to get her brother to do something so against his personal standards and it deserved some memorializing.

There was a brief moment where Kori actually thought Brandon might get up. A feeling of dread sinking into her stomach at being left alone with her sister again. He'd just arrived and things were sort of better now. She didn't want him to go just because Lilah was distracted by something. Besides if that was the case she'd be along eventually anyway. There was no point in him leaving just for him to miss her.

"It's one of her favorite things plus I promised I'd show her how to knit this year. So she'll be here eventually." Kori added trying not to let the horrified feeling she'd felt translate into her expression. Not that it would matter Brandon and Leah probably saw it anyway.

"Kay," Brandon mumbled.

He really should have known that the fact that they were so determined for him not to go had less to do with not wanting him to go and more to do with not wanting him to leave the two of them alone together. However, of the Stone siblings, he was the least outright perceptive, so he was blissfully oblivious. Or maybe not so blissful as he carved off a piece of the slimy rectangular meat and forced himself not to flinch while he ate it.

So long as no one asked him how it tasted, he was okay.

"Attaboy and a pat on the shoulder? What am I, a dog?" he asked, his tone light and a smirk on his face so his sisters would know he was kidding. He was barely able to bite back a comment about how killing his insides was not worthy of a toast, but he did, and just trucked on like he always did.

The expression on Kori's face when she mentioned teaching Lilah to knit made him arch an eyebrow. "You all right, Squirt?" he asked her. "You look like a goose just walked over your grave or something."

Good. He wasn't leaving. That was very good. She hoped he (and Kori) didn't hear her sigh of relief as she relaxed back in her chair. Keeping Brandon there did have more to do with not wanting to be alone with Kori, but at the heart of it, Leah was truly thankful he was there.

She grinned when Kori patted him on the shoulder, which was followed by a question about whether he was a dog. "You are. But a cute one, so that makes it less insulting," Leah replied in a matter-of-fact tone.

When the youngest Stone spoke up about promising to teach Lilah to knit, Leah drew a long pull from her bottle of water to mask her bitterness. It shouldn't have bothered her, really. Leah hated knitting, and wasn't a huge fan of crafts in general. "See? No worries. Lilah will be here."

She wished Brandon hadn't called attention to the expression on Kori's face. Had Leah not been so adept at hiding her expression, she was sure it would've mirrored her little sister's. You didn't want him to leave either, did you? Setting down her water bottle, she picked up her fork again, turning her attention to the vegetables now that she'd gotten past the torture of the Spam.

Kori tilted her head her lips pressed together. She was pretty sure she'd just heard a sigh from her sister but she ignored it. No point in drawing attention to the shared feeling of relief. Brandon would probably pick up on it eventually but the longer he wasn't aware the easier it was for her to pretend.

"I could get you a collar if you'd like for Christmas," She teased carrying the joke a little further. But that was where she let it drop. Still she smiled at him for a second longer before turning her attention back to her plate of vegetables.

She shook her head. "I'm fine." Her gaze drifted to Leah before dropping back to her food. No point in irritating her. She picked up a couple more forkfuls of veggies and stuffed them in her mouth. Chewing she tried to find another line of conversation they could follow that wouldn't lead to more awkwardness. "Anything interesting going on in the world beyond these walls?" She asked which probably wasn't the best conversation topic but she was genuinely curious.

"Oh, ha ha. You two are so incredibly funny I think I'll laugh myself into a coma," Brandon quipped, no less amused as he looked between the two women. "If you get me a collar, it would just go to Cinnamon, though he's not big on collars so it'd probably just end up gnawed through and left somewhere in the dirt outside." His grin was playful.

Kori's question about what was going on outside was met with an indignant gaze from Brandon. Had she really just asked that? He wasn't sure if he was going to answer, so instead, he focused on filling his mouth with not-Spam food to keep it occupied. He needed a distraction.

As though on cue, Cinnamon dashed back into the room from where Regan had taken him for a quick walk. He'd been crying, and Brandon was already late, so he'd willingly let Regan take him and had hurried to meet with his sisters. Now, though, the tan husky was back and ready for attention. He barreled from the door up to the table, his paws on Brandon's leg as he sniffed at the contents of the plate. He should have been angry, but the dog picked only the thing he was least interested in from the plate, the Spam, obviously, and sat next to his owner, gnawing happily.

"Ha! Trained you well…" he was unable to keep himself from saying. "I'd be mad but that was just so brazen that I can't help but respect the courage…" he added with a wry smirk.

Leah smirked at Kori's suggestion of getting Brandon a collar. "A fine way to treat a gift from your sister. Giving it to the dog."

As per usual, when the uncomfortable questions arose, it fell to Leah to be the bearer of wisdom, such as it was. "Flesh-eaters everywhere. Same as it's been for the past few years, and nothing you need to go out and investigate." Being cooped up inside a building all day every day had to be difficult, but the alternative and the risks were much, much worse. As far as subject changes went, it wasn't her sister's most brilliant. If Kori got annoyed by her answer, at least she'd be annoyed with Leah and not Brandon. That was how things worked now, wasn't it?

Popping a carrot into her mouth, she looked around when Brandon's dog made his appearance. "Yeah, that and he's eating what you didn't want to eat. Why should you be mad at that?"

Kori simply rolled her eyes at Brandon. He could give it to Cinnamon she wouldn't take any offense at it. Although she would make sure she got him to wear it once before it became the husky's chew toy, of that much Brandon could be sure. "I don't mind as long he willingly puts it on first. I have to have something to remember the collar by."

Kori shot her sister an exasperated look, "Me? Investigate? Never, I have so much to explore here as it is." If it weren't for the kids and Tim, Kori probably would have gone stir crazy a week ago. But they kept her busy. She barely had time some days to even think about exploring the safe house let alone the outside world as she was dragging her butt to her bedroll. The outside world did hold a certain amount of mystery that she kind of wanted to explore. Not that it was smart but it was that whole forbidden fruit and temptation thing. So far she was doing marvelously well against the temptation.

Kori just laughed as the dog took Brandon's Spam. "You're one lucky guy to have a dog that loves you so much they'd subject themselves to processed meat for you. You better be planning on rewarding her for her sacrifice."
