Juliette had been quietly delighted when the Countess had approached her on the Cathedral steps and invited her - and only her - to tea. Although Sunday afternoons were often hers to do with as she wished, she had not thought she would get away today, considering her absence all day Saturday and her exhausted return rather late in the evening. But no one said no to the Countess - at least not in her family - and thus she had been released with many cloying smiles and wishes to have a lovely time and stern looks telling her to behave herself. Now they sat at a shaded table, watching the people on the street pass, a pot of fragrant jasmine tea between them along with a rather large selection of tiny sandwiches and baked goods. Sometimes, Juliette wondered if the Countess guessed that she was nearly always hungry these days - as was the norm when it was just the two of them, the older woman had ordered really too much food for two polite ladies - but Juliette was grateful, especially after her exertions of the day prior. She picked up the teapot, poured first the Countess' cup, then her own. In the shade, and with a breeze playing through her hair, the warm tea would be pleasant even on a summer afternoon. "Thank you, again, for inviting me," she said with a small but sincere smile. |
