RP: I can't believe this!
Date: September 13, 2006
Characters: Cass, Marietta (NPCed), Percy
Location: Marietta's home, then Percy and Cass' home.
Private/Public: Private
Rating: All ages
Warnings: NOne
Summary: Cass goes to talk to Marietta, and to figure out what's going on with her.

He wasn't sure if meeting Marietta in her home was a good idea, but when he'd written to her, it was what Marietta had suggested and he couldn't find a reason good enough to refuse. Still, he hoped it didn't mean that Aiden would be there, as he couldn't hold this conversation if the child was. Not properly. Not without running the risk of hurting the boy. It was the last thing he wanted to do, he was probably scared enough as it was, being shipped off to strangers just like that.

He arrived on time, knocking the door with some trepidation, wondering if he would be able to keep his temper in check when he saw Marietta. It didn't take long before the door was answered, by Marietta luckily enough and Cass drew a breath of relief as he realised it wasn't the boy. And as he realised he didn't hex her on the spot.

'Cass,' Marietta purred with a smile, the way she always did when she met him, the way that used to go straight to his loins before. He felt himself grow sick to his stomach from hearing it now. 'Come in, you said you wanted to see me,' she continued and Cass swallowed the bile in his throat as he stepped in behind her.

'We need to talk.' The words were simple, factual, and without emotions. He paused looking around when he entered, looking around the house for evidence of the boy. The one thing he noticed was that it didn't look like a place where Marietta would live. It looked… it looked like an old woman's home. But most importantly, he couldn't see a child, which he hoped meant that they could talk privately. 'Can we speak in private here?' he asked, just to make sure. 'Aiden…' The name still sounded strange to his ear. '...Should probably not hear this.'

Marietta smiled, nodding. 'He's outside playing in the garden,' she said happily, gesturing towards a closed door. Cass wasn't quite sure about letting a kid that age play alone without supervision in a garden, but then what did he know about kids? He kept his mouth shut and said nothing. Well nothing more than the incantation to a privacy spell or three. Better make sure the boy didn't hear, just in case. Then he turned back to face Marietta, not sure how to begin for a moment, anger welling up inside him as he thought of the questions he wanted to ask. Why now? Why not tell me six bloody years ago? How do I know it's not a trick?

He kept from asking, instead he would keep it simple, to the point. The Auror asking questions. Interrogating a suspect. It kept things easier, in control. It kept him from hexing her.

'What happened now that made you decide to tell me?' he asked calmly. It was plain and to the point, and left no room for a sudden guilty conscious.

Marietta didn't look as pleased at the question, and for a moment she said nothing. Then she put her chin stubbornly in the air and looked straight at him. 'I was not the one who left for months and months. Besides, with who you are, could you blame me? I didn't think you'd be interested. You should perhaps think of everything I've been through over these years instead. Always hiding him, not being able to raise him myself but being forced to let my mother-'

'Your mother?' Cass interrupted her with a snort. So that was whose house this was. It made him realise another thing too, Marietta had never raised this boy at all. Her mother had, and now something had happened that made that impossible. 'What happened to your mother?' he asked harshly.

'She died.' Marietta's answer was just simple as the question, but there was still stubbornness in her as she as she moved to sit down. She answered, but not willingly – and she was still trying to play him. 'As I'm sure you can understand this is quite a hard time for me,' she said, trying to sound vulnerable. Cass didn't buy the act.

'And for Aiden?' Cass asked, crossing his arms. He had no sympathy for Marietta, but he knew enough about losing a parent to have enormous sympathies for the child. After all, it seemed his grandmother had been his actual parent, rather than Marietta, and now he was being shipped off to live with strangers. He didn't wait for her answer, instead he glared at her. 'Did you even consider raising him yourself? Rather than sending him off to live with people he has never met before?'

There was a clear accusation in his voice, and Marietta stood as quickly as she'd sat down, her hands on her hips, her chin pushed forward. 'I can't take care of him!' she snapped. 'Don't you think this is hard for me? I just lost my mother! I now have to watch my son live somewhere else! You do not need to worry about the burden thoug, it's only temporary, once I'm stably married I can arra-

'The hell you will!'

The words were out of his mind before he could stop himself, but by now Cass didn't care anymore. He had tried to control himself but faced with the utter selfishness of Marietta he had the choice of yelling at her or hexing her. Somehow he didn't think it would be a good start for his relationship with Aiden if he hexed his mother.

'I won't let you ship him around like he's some kind of pet! If that boy is indeed my son, then I will take the consequences of that and take care of him. Something you should have done but didn't!' He was more or less fuming now, her carelessness angering him more than he'd expected it too. As terrified as he was of being a bad parent, of having responsibility for a child, he realised he could hardly be any worse than what Marietta was already.

Holding his tongue he simply stared at Marietta for a moment, daring her to speak up against him. She tried, she snapped, yelled at him that he was being unfair. He didn't listen, instead he simply pulled out his wand, casting a truth spell on her without asking first.

'Is he really my son?' he asked simply, his voice blank at the question. Marietta confirmed it. 'You are sure of this?' Again she answered yes.

'Will you try any tricks to keep me from taking him?' She hesitated, seemingly battling with herself.

'He's my son,' she said stubbornly.

'Mine too apparently – so will you try to hinder me from taking him or try to take him back when you feel like it?'

'He's mine! I will have him back.' She seemed annoyed with herself, angry, furious with him, though there was little she could do against the spell. Cass nodded. So legal papers would be necessary, like Percy had thought. She didn't seem to want to keep him from taking the boy though.

He lifted his wand, ready to take the spell off her, then hesitated for a moment. 'Are you involved with Rodolphus Lestrange, or in any other way tied to the Death Eaters.'

She shook her head. 'No,' she answered. 'They have good points though,' she added. Cass swallowed down the bile in his throat, tempted to tell her that her son was a half blood and wouldn’t be worth much according to the Death Eaters way of seeing things. He didn't though, but lifted the spell from her.

'I'll perform a paternity spell on him when I come to pick him up,' he said, turning his back on her and walking towards the door, then stopped as he passed the one thing that had been missing in Marietta's flat. A photo.

For a moment he just stared at it, then looked at Marietta, and the picture again. 'Is this Aiden?' he asked. Reluctantly she nodded, her eyes and stance still stubborn. Cass took the photo, barely believing his eyes, nearly laughing at the picture even as he tried to find the resemblance to himself. Oh this was… priceless.

'I'm taking this,' he said simply, putting it in the pocket of his robes as he stepped out of the house. He didn't feel the need to meet the boy yet, not when he was still so upset with Marietta. Instead he Apparated to Hogsmeade, greeting his former colleagues with a nod as he passed them at the Apparition point, heading home as fast as he could, calling out for Percy even as he stepped through the door.

Percy hadn't lost the habit of working all the times. Of course, he had lost the habit of being in his office day and night, which only meant that more and more papers were making their way home, some covered in spells that wouldn't allow anyone, not even Cass to read them.

He was looking over another parchment when he heard Cass calling him. Plato raised his head and barked once before lying down again. "In the living room," Percy called back.

Cass was coming back from that woman's house and Percy had a feeling that any sort of calm was about to evaporate.

Cass walked into the room without hesitation, bending down and patting Sabina as she came to stroke against him. He wasn't even sure where to begin, but as he looked up at Percy he could only sigh.

'I don't know what I ever saw in that woman, she's without a doubt the most selfish person I've ever met in my life,' he said. 'And that includes every Slytherin I've ever met.'

He sighed. 'She never raised him, you know. Her mother has, now her mother is dead and...' he shrugged, the thought making him as annoyed as he had been before.

"I assume you saw her body," Percy deadpanned. He had looked the Egdecombe woman up. They didn't have much in terms of file, but she'd been interviewed once or twice in regards to events at the Three Broomsticks. In the end Percy hadn't been terribly impressed with what he'd read, but he assumed she looked good. Rosmerta had been pretty adamant in hiring only the best looking people.

"Would you like to sit down, and tell me what happened? Possibly in a way that makes sense to the people who weren't there," he added. He pulled a chair close to his. "Come on, sit down, and talk to me."

Cass would have preferred the sofa, preferably with Percy in his arms, or at least touching him, but he settled for the chair for now, flopping down into it and leaning forward against the table.

'I don't know where to start.' He sighed. 'I talked to her, or should I say interrogated her, because it was more or less what I was doing. She wasn't overly happy, but she did answer my questions.' Mostly because he'd forced her to, but he didn't mention that part. 'What I do know is that she does believe he is my son, she's sure of it even. I also know that Aiden has been raised by his grandmother, not her, and that this grandmother died recently. That's probably why she's shipping him off to us - without her mother to take care of him I assume she sees him as a burden. She did mention some marriage or another but I didn't exactly pay attention to what excuses she had. She had a few too many.'

He let out a puff of air, tired and annoyed. 'We'll need that legal aid though, she made no secret of her intentions of taking Aiden back eventually.'

Percy groaned, but at least he didn't bang his head against the table, which he felt like it was the proper response. "Sometimes, I forget that you're a Slytherin." Sometimes, he was sure that Cass forgot that he was one, too.

"You don't think that paying attention would have been nice. It would have helped with whatever legal steps you want to take." He sighed. "All right, what do you want, Cass? I think that's the first question. Do you want to raise him until he goes to Hogwarts? Are you willing to take him for a year or two and then return him to his mother? Don't you think you should have discussed this with her? Jesus, Cass, a little patience would be nice right now. You're discussing your son."

'There is no way I'm handing him back to her!' Cass said, not even thinking about the consequences for himself for once. When he realised what he was saying he nearly groaned himself. He stood up, pacing the floor, running his hand through his hair.

'Look, I know I never wanted to be a father, and I certainly know I'm probably not cut out to be one, but I can't leave him with a mother who can't be bothered with him. Even I would do better than that!' He sighed, returning to his seat again, not able to decide if he wanted to sit or pace or do neither.

'Are you willing to though?' he asked suddenly, looking up at Percy. 'It's five years - and then summers, holidays. It's more than either of us bargained for.'

"I think you're trying to find qualifications that don't exist," Percy said. "He's your son, and his mother is less than equipped to raise him. This isn't a matter of being willing or not. We can't leave him in that situation. Of course, we'll raise him. It can't be that difficult, after all. Seven people survived the twins, nothing can be worse."

He covered Cass' hand. "I don't mean to bring things back to the important topics, but did you tell her about your mother and Lestrange? That might have an impact on what she wants to do, and it's something she should know anyway."

Drawing a breath of relief, Cass smiled at Percy, utterly grateful that he was there. 'I'm sure I couldn't do this without you,' he said feeling terrified, confused and grateful all at the same time. He turned his hand, entwining his fingers with Percy's.

He then frowned, shaking his head. 'I did ask her if she was in any way involved with them, though,' he said tiredly. 'She said she wasn't, but that she agreed with their views. I couldn't tell her that Aiden is a half blood after that, having her send him off to complete strangers because he's in her way is bad enough, who knows what she'd do or say to him if she found that out?'

Percy squeezed Cass' fingers. "I'm sure you'd do fine, after your initial outburst that would put a Gryffindor to shame," he said, grinning. "Really, Cass, you need to stop panicking, and start thinking. I know you can do it."

He listened to Cass, but he wasn't sure he agreed with Cass' interpretation. "If she agrees with them, maybe she'll be more willing to give up a son that she hasn't raised and who not only is not a pureblood, but could put her in danger just by being near her," he pointed out. "I don't know, Cass. She doesn't sound like the best mother in the world, but maybe she'd surprise you, and considering the danger, she'll keep the boy and protect him. You would know one way or another if she cares about him or not, and if she doesn't, I doubt you'll ever see her again."

'Do fine? I wouldn't even be able to feed him properly. Or do you think it would be a good idea to subject him to my cooking?' he teased.

He shook his head. 'But would what's best for him be to never see her again?' he asked. 'As horrible as she is, she is his mother.' Although he would have preferred if she wasn't. Then again he'd have preferred if none of this happened at all. 'I'll talk to her about it when I go to pick the boy up,' he said instead. 'Though I'm still not fond of the idea.'

He ran his thumb over Percy's fingers, thinking of what else to bring up, then smirked as he remembered. 'I brought a picture of him,' he said, reaching into his pocked. He could barely keep from chuckling as he glanced at the photo, then at Percy, waiting just a moment before he handed him the framed photograph. 'Think he'll fit in?' he asked with a teasing tone.

"No one should be subjected to your cooking regardless of age or relationship," Percy said. "We could make an exception for the Lestranges. It might be the best way to kill them."

Percy sighed. "Cass, I think we're not in a point in time where you can worry about that. Making sure he survives is more important than anything else, and when this war is over than we worry about the consequences. You have Lestrange after you, and it's not something you can keep from her, and if that means that she never wants to see the boy, then he's better off without her."

He took the frame, and his eyebrows flew to his hairline. "You have a thing for redheads I see. God, it's Weasley red, isn't it? Poor boy, the hair and living with me. He won't have an easy time in school. You might want to suggest Hufflepuff, if not Gryffindor."

Cass chuckled slightly at the joke, raising an eyebrow as if he was thinking the suggestion over. 'I'll invite him for dinner then, shall I?'

Though when Percy returned to the real issue he sighed. 'I can protect him more here than I can if he's with her. But I said I'll talk to her and I will.' If he could only keep from hexing her then that might make it easier.

The expression on Percy's face when he saw the picture was priceless, and Cass couldn't help but to laugh. 'Definitely your shade of red, though I have no clue where the freckles comes from. You're sure you've never slept with Marietta?' he joked, chuckling. 'And I don't know about a hard time...everyone will just assume he's yours,' he said. 'Hey, he might think so himself when he sees us,' he added with a wink.

"You should. It might put an end to this war," he said, chuckling.

"I don't know, Cass. If no one knows that he's your son, then he's safe. I know it's not ideal, but it would be something to considered," he added. "It will also tell you just how much she's interested in his well being. If she's not, then it will probably be easier to take custody of Aiden."

Percy snorted. "Redheads and freckles go together. Don't you know? Lighter or darker, but they are always there. And yes, I'm quite sure that I've never had sex with the woman, especially six something years ago." He smiled. "Yes, and a presumed Weasley in Slytherin would have such lovely life," he said sarcastically. "It's why I suggested Gryffindor or Hufflepuff. We both know you could have fit in both."

'No one knew that my mother was my mother,' Cass pointed out. 'Secrets has a way of coming out no matter if you want them to or not and no one is safe while the war is going on.'

'And his mother is a Ravenclaw,' Cass pointed out. 'Whatever he'll be it doesn't matter, if he can survive this, then he'll survive that.' He smirked, leaning in and kissing Percy. 'And I would definitely would never have fitted into Hufflepuff,' he then half exclaimed. 'Hard working?' He shook his head with a smirk. Not when it came to school at least - well other than the subjects he'd needed to become an Auror.

"You might have a point," Percy coincided, although he still thought that once the secret was out, there was no way to change their minds. "Still, I think you should tell her regardless, and see what she says."

He raised an eyebrow. "I don't think surviving life with his will be so terrible. I happen to enjoy our life very much." He pressed his lips against Cass, smiling. "You would have done fine in Hufflepuff. You're hard working when it's something you like. You worked hard at the department, and you are loyal, but you're right, it wouldn't matter where he's sorted."

'Unless you didn't notice I already agreed to do that, even if I don't exactly like the idea.' He smiled, using his free hand to caress Percy's cheek.

'And I didn't mean it like that, of course. Though honestly, me as a father?' Cass shuddered. 'What I meant was losing his grandmother, and then being shipped off by his mother to people he doesn't know and probably never heard of. No matter what we do - or try to do - he's going to have a rough time.'

"I know, and I also know just how much you don't like it." He turned his head, and kissed Cass' hand. "It's absurd that you have to hide your mother, because of stupid prejudices. I'm sorry."

Percy turned to stare at Cass. "I know what you meant, Cass, but you will be a good father. You're a good friend, and lover, loyal beyond words, and I can't imagine you doing any less for your son. He will some a hard time at the beginning, but in the end, this will probably be best. He'll be in a house where he'll be cared for and protected... and wanted. We'll take care of your son, Cass, okay?"

'You have nothing to be sorry for,' he said, smiling warmly at Percy. 'It's my family who are the insane ones.' That's when he realised something, and the next moment he started to laugh. 'Fuck, Percy, do you realise what this means to them?' he asked. 'They'll never inherit the manor. Vaisey manor is strictly passed down father to oldest son, no exceptions, ever. That's why my grandfather couldn't will it to my uncle instead of me. The reason he locked it instead.'

He smirked. 'I never thought I'd have kids, my uncle and grandfather surely didn't think I would, but now that I do...Aiden is the heir. His sons after him if he has any. My uncle won't ever be the master of Vaisey manor.'

He was rather pleased with that thought. Though he did realise it put Aiden in more danger. His uncle would not be pleased. Not that it mattered, between Lestrange and his uncle, Cass preferred his Uncle. He could handle and predict him. He had for most of his life.

His gloating came to an abrupt end when Percy continued to speak. He wasn't as sure as Percy was, and he was still scared about being a father, but Percy's support helped. 'Thanks,' he said. 'I'm not sure you're right about me, but I'll do my best. And you're here to tell me when I screw up, that helps,' he added, smirking as he leaned in and brushed his lips against Percy's again.

"Yes, they almost make me feel good about my family," Percy said, although he was aware that compared to Cass' family, the twins were suddenly saints.

"Maybe one day you and Aiden can have your house back." Not that Percy really wanted that. The idea of living in a place like that left him weary. "Wards, no matter how old, can be modified with time and expertise. It might be something to consider once this war is over."

He pushed his chair closer and put his hands on Cass' thighs and leaned forward. "I know I'm right, but I'll be by your side the entire time. We'll be fine. Now, when is he arriving? We might want to make preparations for him."

Cass chuckled. 'Well then they've done one good thing in their lives.' Not that they would think so themselves. He was fairly sure they'd be horrified at the comparison.

Even though he was sure Percy meant well, the thought of the manor almost made Cass shiver. It wasn't that the place didn't look nice enough, but it reminded him of his grandfather and those memories weren't something he was particularly fond of. Shaking his head, he smiled. 'Maybe one day, when Aiden is older, let him decide. Personally the only reason I'd ever set foot there again is to get the few things I had there.' He looked at Percy, letting his eyes roam over his face.

'You'd hate it there,' he stated softly, remembering Percy's reluctance even to Emilia's villa. 'So would I. I never lived there by choice, it was only a matter of what I was expected to do and even then I was there as little as I could master. I don't miss it, this is more home than that ever was.'

He smiled when he felt Percy's hand against his thigh, and for a moment he closed his eyes to savour the feeling. 'You'll be annoyed at me,' he said. 'I didn't specify, just said I'd be by to pick him up.' He gave Percy a guilty look. 'She said next week though, so when would we like to pick him up? I'm sure I can have it arranged in a day or two.'

Percy pulled Cass into his lap, and closed his arms around his lover. "I'm sorry I brought it up. You talked about it, and I thought you wanted to be there, but you never have to go in there again, not to visit and not to live, if you don't want to."

He kissed Cass' shoulder. "I admit that I wouldn't like it, but I'm never going to stand in the way of you getting what you want. You can always remove the wards and sell it. I'm sure you'll like the money more than the house."

He smiled, shaking his head. "It's so like you. I don't care when, just let me know, and I'll make sure to be home with you."

His arms around Percy's shoulders, he leaned down his forehead against Percy's. 'Don't be sorry, Percy, you have no reason to be,' he said, a smile on his face. 'As for selling the place, as much as I'd love to - impossible remember? If grandfather couldn't find a way to circumvent the curses and spells on the place, then I'm certainly not going to. He cared enough to try after all.'

'Besides, Aiden might like it, if he does he can have it. If he doesn't then it can fall to pieces for all I care.' He smirked, moving his face so their lips were touching.

'No preferences?' he asked, his tone almost teasing, though he pondered the options himself. He did think sooner was better than later, as it minimised the risk of Marietta suddenly running off or finding someone else to dump the kid on. Then again, they needed to fix up a room for him. The guestroom he supposed would be good.

'Tuesday? Wednesday?' he asked. 'Will that be enough time?'

Percy shrugged. "Yes, but we have plenty of time to do it, and a lot of resources your grandfather didn't have." Snape owed him, and if there was someone who could do it, then the man could. He had said, he worked with the Bletchley wards, and Percy couldn't imagine those being friendly.

He looked up at Cass. "You'll go insane until we get him here, won't you?" Percy knew him too well, and Cass would just go over and over all the possibilities from now until they picked the boy up. "We can fix up the house tomorrow morning, and I'll go to the office in the afternoon. Work on Monday morning, and you can pick up Aiden after lunch. I'll make sure to be home by three. Is that better?"

'Leave it for Aiden to deside,' Cass said with a shrug. 'I just don't care enough, but he might. It's his by birth-right, I wouldn't want to make the decision for him.' And he really didn't care enough - about the manor, the grounds or the money it could bring. Selling it when it was just his and would be his Uncle's after him would have been another thing.

He sniggered a bit at Percy's words, but did know they had merit. He'd probably think of ten million ways he would be a horrible father long before they had Aiden in the house. 'Monday sounds good,' he said with a smirk. 'I'll write Marietta tomorrow.' Though a part of him would love to just surprise her. He realised that wouldn't work though, so he'd do it the right way.

'Do you need to keep working?' he then asked. 'Or does a man have a chance of persuading you to go to bed with him for a while. Or, you know, to the sofa, or table, floor, wall... whatever,' he teased.

"We can worry about that later, Cass, but we might want to deal with the wards when we can. Who knows if when Aiden is old enough if they can be taken off. There's no sense in thinking ahead for the future. You sort of have to, now that we have to worry about Aiden," Percy said.

He squeezed Cass' hand. "I'm sure we'll find plenty to do until then. I'd rather like you when you're sane. You tend to do stupid things when you worry. We should go shopping. Children like more than healthy food, and maybe some toys and books to make him feel at home."

Percy shook his head. "I guess I could take some time off. Is the sofa all right?"

'See this is why I need you,' Cass said with a smirk, kissing Percy again. 'And shopping sounds good. You're right, he'll need things to make him feel welcome.'

He smirked when Percy suggested the sofa, running his hand through his hair. 'Of course it's all right,' he said, standing up and pulling Percy right along with him. 'Haven't I told you before I quite like the sofa,' he added with a wink, pulling his robes over his head even as they went.
