Elphaba narrowed her brow, glancing from one package of roasted nuts to the other. What was the difference, exactly? Both of the mixes contained the same kind of nuts—almonds, cashews, pecans, and peanuts. Both of them were ‘lightly roasted’ and ‘salted.’ Neither one, as far as she could tell, had any difference with size, where they came from, or even the company. Yet one of them was over a dollar cheaper than the other one. She sighed, and dropped the less expensive one into her basket. Shopping was so dammed confusing here. Prices, discounts, brightly-colored plastic packaging…Everybody seemed obsessed about giving ‘the right deal’ and such. It was never this bad back home.
But she was resolved to stop whining about Oz. That was then, this was now. It’s true that nobody else perhaps heard her silent complaints, but it was starting to bug her. She had never been this negative. Well, that was a lie—she had been this cynic, but she’d never been this annoying about it.
Weekly trips to the Supermarket (always on Thursday morning) had become another one of her many small rituals. Milk, produce (the amount of fruit and vegetables they had were staggering, at first), bread and cheese. She also made a point to at least have something new every time she came here. The green-skinned Witch turned a corner and walked down an aisle, surveying what was present. Something caught her eye, briefly, and she bent down to look.
What was an ‘Oreo?’
