2007 Year In Review
Wow, so this has been a BIG year for InsaneJournal. We have seen growth like I have only imagined. To start out the year we were in a down period. MySpace, LiveJournal, and GreatestJournal were the big boys on the block and very few users found a reason to use a small little site like InsaneJournal. And for the most of the first 5 months it stayed that way.

Then on March 30th LiveJournal made a huge PR mistake and deleted around 500 accounts for listing certain interests. This lead to an article being written by CNET News.com that listed InsaneJournal as an alternative to LiveJournal (http://www.news.com/Mass-deletion-sparks-LiveJournal-revolt/2100-1025_3-6187619.html). This action by LiveJournal became known as strikethrough 2007.

On this date we saw a number of new accounts signing up, I wasn't fully aware of what was going on for another day when I found the article and everything started to come clear. InsaneJournal was about to change, for the better, and for good. We were no longer a niche site hidden away in a dark corner of the Internet. It seems that the Internet found us, like it or not. Well I did like it and I made a post (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/31922.html) welcoming all of our new users.

By the time late August rolled around, it became painfully obvious that IJ had outgrown it's old little server so I moved the site to a bigger and better server (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/35828.html) to accommodate the growth. My little baby of a site was growing up.

The site ran fine for awhile continuing to grow at an amazing pace, nothing like we had ever dealt with before. Thankfully my 9-5 life came in to rescue the site. I had gotten a lot of experience running a large webhosting provider so I understood the challenges of running a large scale site. Because on December 5th, GreatestJournal.com dealing with the same kind of growth we were seeing could no longer keep up. They decided that they were going to endorse InsaneJournal as an alternative and disabled new account creation (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/38402.html) . This caused a new even larger influx than before. The new faster server that was supposed to support us for a long time was suddenly not quite big enough. So, InsaneJournal, upgraded again (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/40057.html).

The new server, that I had thought to be good enough, apparently wasn't when just a couple of weeks later, the strain of userpics on the server started to take its toll. I realized that the site was just too busy for any single server to handle. So rather than move the site to new bigger and better hardware, I decided it was finally time to expand the site to more than one server. So to finish off the year, on December 29th, InsaneJournal starting running on 3 separate servers (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/41805.html).

Now we are here a couple of days later and the site is running amazingly. We are now positioned to easily add more servers to handle further load increases. The hard part is done and I really do feel that the growing pains are over. Throughout 2007 I really feel that I learned what it takes to run a large scale social network. Because that is what we have quickly become. And I think what I have done here is really raise the bar for all of the other sites when it comes to communication and customer service. So many site admins seem to forget that it is the users who make these sites what they are. And the brings me to this ... I really want to thank you, yes you the person reading this for coming here. If it wasn't for you and everyone else who is here this site would still be hiding in a dark corner, and Tweak wouldn't have all of his new cool friends. Your generosity has helped me grow this site to a level that I never imagined that it would achieve.

Just to give you guys an idea of the kind of growth we are seeing.

Here are the stats for the ENTIRE month of Janurary, 2007:
Visits:48579 Pages:363870 Hits:748801 Bandwidth5.01 GB

Now here are the stats for a SINGLE DAY in December, 2007:
Visits:26533 Pages:1573211 Hits:2507235 Bandwidth:14.16 GB

Yes on a daily basis we are doing 2x-3x more than we used to do in a month. You guys ROCK!

Now we have 2008 to look forward to. Sometime in January we are going to reach 100,000 registered accounts. That in itself is amazing, but what is more amazing is that I feel before the end of the year we may even reach 200,000. I already have plans in place to handle the growth.

We are also working on a new site scheme. I was going to hold a design contest, but I have so much on my plate already that creating the contest was going to be too much. So we have a wonderful user who is working on a new site design that will be much easier on the eyes. I will be soliciting user input to this new design before I set it loose on everyone so don't worry you all will still get to put your 2 cents in.

2008 is going to be an exciting year.

Please feel free to discuss both the history of the site and where you would all like to see the site go in the comments below.

Yay! Squeaky. I'm a recent member, joined when LJ was starting to annoy me just a little too much, and it has been great here so far.

Great work, Squeaky! I look forward to many happy, productive years here (yay for having a permanent account!)

BTW...the new user pic? I have nothing against a man in a tie but it looks like it's making you uncomfortable. Relax! You're among friends :D

I'm excited about 2008. And I'm really looking forward to the new layout(s?) for IJ. If it could be white as a background, that would be even better than the grey it is now! One of the reasons why I stay using the default view in IJ is because the top image is very small. It means I don't have to scroll down as much every time I view a page, and I like that. Oh, but I can't wait to see what your chosen user comes up with.

One improvement I'd like to see IJ add in the future would be the ability to preview icons in comments, not just in new posts. This is a feature that GJ has (LJ doesn't - at least, not in a convenient format) and I loved it. I miss it.

The Private Messages feature is badass. Don't ever stop.

I can't think of anything else I need from this site. It's been so, so great -- the open arms to me and my RP group, the clear dedication you have to the site, the fact that you talk to us about what's going on... It's a far cry from what I've come to expect... and I'm afraid IJ has just ruined me for any other journaling site.

So thank you. Thank you very much. And best of luck for 2008!

I love you so hard right now that you probably should be scared XD

I quite like the icon preview in comments that GJ had too, but I'm not bothered about video or voice posting. I'd rather not see that mouseover stuff that LJ insisted on including everywhere (where you see links to userinfo or adding to friends etc.) because it slowed everything down, took forever to load and was just awful to look at when it eventually appeared.

Also also. No to the virtual gifts thing... that whole idea is just poo XD

Reacing 200k at the end of the year!!

Its very cool to think I'll always be in the beiginning 60k numbers. Some day you'll reach the 7 digit numbers.

I'll always be a wee 5 digiter.

That's cool.

Happiest of New Year's adventures!! I can't wait to see what happens.

Thank you Squeaky. You're the reason you've had such a growth spurt, because I know that I personally wouldn't have stayed if you had been anything like the owner of GJ. But I was amazed to find a maintainer that actually tells us what's going on, and there are no words to tell you how refreshing that is and how grateful I am for it. And as soon as I have the money, I'll probably be buying myself a paid account here. Keep up the great work, Squeaky, and happy new year!

It's posts like this that make me VERY glad I came to IJ this year, after being very disappointed at the problems over at LJ. I love how you always keep us informed about what's going on with the site.
I'm amazed at the stats on site usage, but happy too to know that other people have realized what a great site this is.
Thank YOU, squeaky, and Happy New Year.

You have every right to be proud, Squeaky. The numbers came at you fast and hard, and I think everyone would have understood if there was a lot of downtime with trying to keep up with the server demands. But as it was, there was very little downtime at all and always a clear explanation right after the fact even as you were busting your behind to upgrade and add servers. We as users are almost always in the know about what's going on and what changes are happening, and feel like "valued customers" rather than "revenue generators". I think I can speak for just about everyone when I say that you have our full confidence in what future changes will be made, and our understanding when IJ hits those inevitable bumps and scrapes along the way.

You haven't been handed success, (LJ users could have gone anywhere) you earned it. And here's to earning even more in 2008.

I can only wait for LJ's screw-ups to become epic before the community I co-moderate will become active on IJ. Improving the design for IJ will help that to happen. In the meantime, I love IJ and am glad I came over here. Thanks for having so much integrity and keeping up with the demand. All the best for 2008!

To everyone at InsaneJournal,

Thank you for taking in users from other sites under your wing. It is comforting to know that ANY person is welcome to become a part of the IJ Family. I'm fairly new to InsaneJournal but I'm in love wit hthe site entirely. The communication between you and your users amazes me and I appreciate you taking time out of your day to inform your users of anything. Everyone can rest with you behind the desk. Woot woot!

And, just to add, the User Icon factory is my new best friend. I don't have a photo editing program on my laptop, so it's convenient to be able to upload a picture and crop it while logged in to IJ!

I hope you and the rest of the IJ team have a great 2008. Thank you for helping me start off mine with a bang! You guys rock and I absolutely LOVE IT HERE!

As L.J. continues to drown in censorship mode and in p.r. blunders,

The only real request is that I.J. remain I.J. and
not anything but I.J.

I said, you are an AMAZING MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I'm throwing "confettis" on the ground for you to walk on. A lot of KUDOS to you and to all the HARD work you did. I've actually had this account on here for 3 years now, and it's been permanent for almost all of that time. While I didn't have a ton of friends on here up until recently, I've been using it as a back up journal all along. I've always preferred it here and just wanted to say how happy I am that the site's doing well and that you're having so much success. It's thoroughly deserved. Here's to a great 2008 for IJ!

What I love most about this site is that I never feel left in the dark. I never feel as if I have to wonder what is going on with it, or what the moderator(s) is doing, or whether or not it will come back if it goes down (which it has since I have joined). I feel like the communication is open and available and that we are being well taken care of!

I would love to help in any way that I can. Please feel free to contact me if there is anything I can ever do to assist members or with the site in general.

I want to add my own congratulations and assure you that you're going to continue to be flooded with new users. My own network of friends on the Other Site are all packing their things and eyeing their options. I'm pretty sure most of them will jump ship at some point, and right now, it's about 50-50 that they'll come here. (The other major candidate seems to be Scribblit, if you're curious)

I'm glad to hear about the new site design, and I'd be lying if I said I didn't miss anything about the Other Site. I miss having polls, for instance. But you rock, hard, and I have put in my tent stakes and spread my canvas, and soon I'll have the center pole up.

More sane now than ever!
[info]oregon_jax

In 2003 I joined LJ (first as a free account, then a paid account)... but a year or so after that I switched to GJ because they offered more for free than LJ did for the pay site...

And in the last month, with all the trouble GJ has been having, I have been shopping around for a new journal site. I would have gone back to LJ, but IJ offers more for less money and that was just a no brainer.

I also shopped around at other options like using the blog feature from my web hoster (Bravenet) but that was ridiculously expensive.

And so, here I am. I still need to move my beloved icons over from GJ but once my check clears and I get my PermanentlyInsane account I will be SET.

IJ is the sanest thing I have done in a long LONG time. ;)
