2007 Year In Review
Wow, so this has been a BIG year for InsaneJournal. We have seen growth like I have only imagined. To start out the year we were in a down period. MySpace, LiveJournal, and GreatestJournal were the big boys on the block and very few users found a reason to use a small little site like InsaneJournal. And for the most of the first 5 months it stayed that way.

Then on March 30th LiveJournal made a huge PR mistake and deleted around 500 accounts for listing certain interests. This lead to an article being written by CNET News.com that listed InsaneJournal as an alternative to LiveJournal (http://www.news.com/Mass-deletion-sparks-LiveJournal-revolt/2100-1025_3-6187619.html). This action by LiveJournal became known as strikethrough 2007.

On this date we saw a number of new accounts signing up, I wasn't fully aware of what was going on for another day when I found the article and everything started to come clear. InsaneJournal was about to change, for the better, and for good. We were no longer a niche site hidden away in a dark corner of the Internet. It seems that the Internet found us, like it or not. Well I did like it and I made a post (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/31922.html) welcoming all of our new users.

By the time late August rolled around, it became painfully obvious that IJ had outgrown it's old little server so I moved the site to a bigger and better server (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/35828.html) to accommodate the growth. My little baby of a site was growing up.

The site ran fine for awhile continuing to grow at an amazing pace, nothing like we had ever dealt with before. Thankfully my 9-5 life came in to rescue the site. I had gotten a lot of experience running a large webhosting provider so I understood the challenges of running a large scale site. Because on December 5th, GreatestJournal.com dealing with the same kind of growth we were seeing could no longer keep up. They decided that they were going to endorse InsaneJournal as an alternative and disabled new account creation (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/38402.html) . This caused a new even larger influx than before. The new faster server that was supposed to support us for a long time was suddenly not quite big enough. So, InsaneJournal, upgraded again (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/40057.html).

The new server, that I had thought to be good enough, apparently wasn't when just a couple of weeks later, the strain of userpics on the server started to take its toll. I realized that the site was just too busy for any single server to handle. So rather than move the site to new bigger and better hardware, I decided it was finally time to expand the site to more than one server. So to finish off the year, on December 29th, InsaneJournal starting running on 3 separate servers (http://asylums.insanejournal.com/announcements/41805.html).

Now we are here a couple of days later and the site is running amazingly. We are now positioned to easily add more servers to handle further load increases. The hard part is done and I really do feel that the growing pains are over. Throughout 2007 I really feel that I learned what it takes to run a large scale social network. Because that is what we have quickly become. And I think what I have done here is really raise the bar for all of the other sites when it comes to communication and customer service. So many site admins seem to forget that it is the users who make these sites what they are. And the brings me to this ... I really want to thank you, yes you the person reading this for coming here. If it wasn't for you and everyone else who is here this site would still be hiding in a dark corner, and Tweak wouldn't have all of his new cool friends. Your generosity has helped me grow this site to a level that I never imagined that it would achieve.

Just to give you guys an idea of the kind of growth we are seeing.

Here are the stats for the ENTIRE month of Janurary, 2007:
Visits:48579 Pages:363870 Hits:748801 Bandwidth5.01 GB

Now here are the stats for a SINGLE DAY in December, 2007:
Visits:26533 Pages:1573211 Hits:2507235 Bandwidth:14.16 GB

Yes on a daily basis we are doing 2x-3x more than we used to do in a month. You guys ROCK!

Now we have 2008 to look forward to. Sometime in January we are going to reach 100,000 registered accounts. That in itself is amazing, but what is more amazing is that I feel before the end of the year we may even reach 200,000. I already have plans in place to handle the growth.

We are also working on a new site scheme. I was going to hold a design contest, but I have so much on my plate already that creating the contest was going to be too much. So we have a wonderful user who is working on a new site design that will be much easier on the eyes. I will be soliciting user input to this new design before I set it loose on everyone so don't worry you all will still get to put your 2 cents in.

2008 is going to be an exciting year.

Please feel free to discuss both the history of the site and where you would all like to see the site go in the comments below.

It has been a pleasure, and I can say I never regretted one second that I moved my communities and personal account over here.

It really is amazing to see the site grow: more communities, more friends are coming over every day, and you, Squeaky, are making it an easy move for everyone. You are a prime example when it comes to be aware of what the users want, and to make them welcome here on IJ. The fact that we always know beforehand that there are upcoming changes is just a new experience, compared to how things ran at that Other Site. I think most of us who went through the Strikethrough can say we feel both welcome and safe here.

Again I wish you and [info]insanity a very Happy New Year. May 2008 be a good year for both you and IJ.

This site is really fantastic, and I couldn't be happier with my new home on the internet. For a lot of us who felt let down by GreatestJournal's lack of communication, it's comforting to know that you not only have a plan, but you're willing to let us know what that plan is.

Heh, if things carry on growing this way you'll probably hit 200,000 before the summer!

Congratulations, Squeaky and may 2008 be even better than 2007!

For me the most important thing has been the level of communication-you tell us what's going on and why. So even when things don't run smoothly I know you'll be around to fill us in and explain.

As someone that came over from lj, censorship is an issue for me. So far, so good on that front and for that I thank you.

Happy New Year! May 2008 be even better.

initially, i was reluctant to move my journals and games over to this server. not because i doubted the server itself, but because of loyalty to another site. however, the communication, the site speed and reliability completely won me over. within a week of coming to this server, i'd bought a permanent account to show my support, and i intend to get paid accounts for some of my rp accounts just to further help this site out.

thank you for all the wonderful communication and effort you put into this site, and i'm looking forward to the next year here!

Yes, you have. The biggest surprise for me when I came over here was the communication you have with your users. You tell us what's going on and what you're doing about it, you ask for feedback and actually listen when we give it to you. That, in and of itself, speaks volumes for how much you appreciate IJ's users.

Unfortunately, the other sites have done nothing to try to meet these standards. If anything, they've gone the other direction, which is why I purchased my permanent account here instead of giving any more of my money to LJ.

[info]squeaky, thank you so very much for welcoming all of us transplants so warmly, for taking the time to tell us what's going on, for caring enough to listen when we give you feedback, and for so many other things that only make your customer service skills a HUGE cut above the others.

May you and your family have a wonderful new year and continued success to Insane Journal :)

Well, I recently moved here from LJ. And I have to say that I've felt more welcome here in the few weeks I've been around than I did in two years on LJ. They truly act as though we (the users) are simply ATMs who will cough up money on their whim.

What is so sad is that so many of those users left there actually do.

I like the LJ format for posting and comments and so on. When I started shopping around in May for a new home, Blogger was there on the list (since I already had an account there), so to was my personal Wordpress blog on my site, and Greatestjournal had been mentioned many times. All other sites were pretty much the same as those three in base usability.

I'll admit that I went with GJ simply because it looked to be larger than IJ, for I hadn't heard of Squeeky yet.

I stopped using them pretty fast. Code that was years out of date, even for them, functionality that came from BBSs and regular outages and site wide glitches that killed posts. I think I put up a total of about 15 posts, most of them memes, not anything important.

So when the Great LJ Migration of 2007 started happening around October, I started looking again. I made the decision to come here when the $35 sale for permanent accounts happened and I have NEVER regretted that decision.

User interfaces I know how to navigate around (with only a few minor issues that are probably my fault), familiar code and scripting. My only big regret is that more of those friends I made on LJ haven't abandoned that sinking ship to come here. And I have been singing praises when I can to try to get them here. Even made a few new friends. Some of the functionality they recently added I miss, but it was honestly things I could live without.

I truly don't feel like an exile so much, and I am happy that my mental processes are safe here. Now if only you could send out straitjackets to those who are really insane, that would be perfect.

But then, how could we post?

Anyhow, thank you very much for being here and willing to be a good host. I stick with people who treat their customers as people for a long time. Just ask Drak.net if I don't. Same level of service and concern, same communication with the customers, same rewards to the owner for that. I plan on being here for a long time.

I originally moved here by request of a friend back in 2004, but it was so small, I ended up leaving within a few months. There were so few accounts and the layout was awful! At least now we have awful options. :P :P

I really want to stay here, so I've gone out of my way to make new journal friends! But I'd really like more people to join. Specifically, my friends from other journaling sites. I hope if this place gets big, the [info]squeaky work ethic stays. :D

You're definitely right about being good at communication. GreatestJournal is always doing things behind the users' backs without telling anyone. Things are pretty sad there now (only 10 userpics, no new accounts), but they're not telling anyone what they're doing to make things better, if they're even doing anything. You always let people know what's going on though, whether it's good news or bad news, so I think this site is a lot more trustworthy! Thank you for everything, I think IJ is definitely the new frontier as far as blogs go.

One thing I have learned over the years is that customer service really does matter. Nothing runs perfectly 100% of the time. I understand this and I think most people do too. However, when you have trust in the person or company it is much easier to deal with it without getting frustrated or upset. This being said, your service is really good too. I knew this site had grown fast, but I had not realized by how much.

I am very glad to have gotten a journal here.

Best of luck to you, Tweak, and the site in 2008!
