Who: Elena Gilbert and Stefan Salvatore
What: Elena comes home from a rescue mission
Where: The rebel camp
When: Right after she ran into Clint
Warnings: Shouldn't be

Elena couldn't believe that everything had gone so smoothly. Because of her superior speed she was able to round up all of the people who had gotten separated from each other in the woods and round them up back to camp. They were all the same, wide eyed and desperate. Their fear and sorrow clung to Elena as she walked back to the small house that she and Stefan had been sharing for the past few months. There were always mercenaries out looking for them. Klaus and Rebekah and Alec didn't seem to mind turning scores of vampires despite how low the human population was. They had their farms after all.

So heavy with the weight of humanity, the young vampire returned to her best friend and lover. The one person she had always been able to truly count on when it mattered. They shared a mutual respect and love for one another in a bond that couldn't be broken. That was why she immediately went to seek out his arms. She sighed against his chest as she felt his hand come to rest over her dark head. Even now, after so many years she thought she might get used to it, the way the people made her feel. Their stinking humanity now in surround sound... and smell and sight and feel.

"How was your day?" she asked him as she pulled away slightly. It wasn't just the humans that were still on her mind either. Clint was still in the back of her mind, the way he had looked had her had just filled her with grief. She understood what it was like to grieve for your own human self, she had gone through that. Scratch, was going through that. But it got easier every day and that had to be worth something.

"Yeah, no. Everything went pretty smoothly," she said as she leaned back into him. She curled up on his lap and leaned against him, the feeling of his skin on her skin soothing as it always was. His hand was on her head again, fingers in her hair. She loved that too. She sighed again, leaning even more heavily into him. There was always this. She could always come home and find his cold comfort.

"There was this one thing. One of Rebekah's vampires was there. He was sitting on a rooftop near where I got them out. I went up to distract him but he knew what I was up to." She could immediately feel Stefan get tense beneath her. "No, it was okay. He seemed... different. I think his humanity was turned on, Stefan. He wanted to help but it was like... I don't know, maybe he was afraid to."

She didn't know if that made Clint an ally or not. He had left things kind of on the bad side that hopefully he wouldn't be on duty next time they ran into one another. Would he remain loyal to Klaus and Rebekah? It was hard not to when they seemed to control everything in and around Everett.

Stefan settled down beneath her and continued to listen. If Rebekah and Klaus had a vampire working for them and Klaus hadn't turned off his humanity ... it didn't make sense. Stefan thought about it as he stroked Elena's hair. Klaus would turn off his humanity to avoid a flip. "Or it was a trap," Stefan said, not trusting of this vampire that Elena had run into. Elena turned slightly so her eyes were on Stefan as he shook his head.

"Klaus would turn it off to avoid that. He's capable of it, he wouldn't waste any time doing so. Did you tell him anything?" Stefan asked, getting more and more suspicious of this vampire. Would Klaus really be that sloppy? Maybe. There were so many vampires they were turning, so many people they were killing and so many that they were using, was it hard to keep count of it all?

Possibly.

The guilt of not being out there right now, saving people was heavy on his chest, but Stefan knew that he did try. All the time, everyday. Elena and Stefan couldn't save them all, but they did try, little by little. He knew it bothered Elena, bothered her more than she liked to admit, it was just apparent. That's who she was.

"Just my name. And that we're with the rebels," Elena said, feeling that tension build up again. She knew that it was the tragic flaw of being Elena Gilbert. She wouldn't stop, she would never stop until she was dead. And really dead not just vampire dead. She had possibly put them all at risk or at least herself at risk by talking to Clint. But she just had to do it.

"You didn't see him, Stefan. He looked so miserable. He was wallowing in his humanity he said. And he was drinking." Drinking wasn't a total surprise. It helped keep the cravings at bay which was a shame because Elena still hadn't quite developed a taste for the liquor that Stefan drank. But why would someone who could freely feed whenever they wanted to be trying to keep cravings down?

"I don't think he's going to say anything to Klaus or Rebekah. We may even be able to count on him sometime in the future. You know, if we ever need help."

They were living one day at a time here. Rebekah and Klaus's soldiers were everywhere and they were out for blood. Elena and Stefan were definitely on the hit list.

When Elena explained the state the vampire was in, he knew that all too well and he sympathized. He relented and relaxed but he could feel that Elena was tense. He started rubbing her arms to soothe her and slowly she started to be at ease. "I trust you," he said. He trusted her judgement, her decisions. They'd been through so much so it was easy to.

"We could use him, you're right. Get him to help us but that would come at a cost to him if Klaus or Rebekah found out," he said, letting out a breath and moving her so she was facing him. He leaned back in the chair as she straddled him. Things were so hard now, harder than they were before and the allies they did have, they cherished. They were so few and far between. Too many people got hurt, killed or carted off and it was a miracle that Elena and Stefan hadn't faced them yet. He was sure it was bound to happen and they had to be prepared, but in the meantime, helping as many people as they could was their goal.

"I'll go out tomorrow, try to find him. Talk to him and try to get through. If you believe that his humanity is on, it possibly wouldn't take much, but we have to be careful. There's no need to find trouble, we don't want that on our hands," Stefan explained, looking her over.

"We're going to get through this."

He said that, they both said that, but they knew the truth. This was it, this is what their world was and it wasn't getting better. They were just adapting to it.

"Or you could just stay here with me." Elena said contentedly as she leaned back into him even more and closed her eyes. His arms tightened around her waist and she snuggled down into him even further. She twisted to the side and opened her dark eyes just to look at him. She loved looking at him. He had no idea how beautiful he was.

Stefan was right. There was no need to risk everything for one person. If Clint was serious about helping people maybe he would look them up. If not, then they wouldn't see him again hopefully. Because as he said, it was possible next time they ran into each other he wouldn't be on a day off.

"I feel like it's been forever since we just had a moment to breathe, you know?" she asked, looking up at him through long dark lashes. When his arm wrapped around her again she let out another contented sigh. She could still stay like this for hours and she knew that he could too.

"How did Jeremy seem?" she asked. She had been worried about him lately which wasn't surprising and was basically the story of her life. Worrying about Jeremy. She really wished she could have given him a different world instead of this one. It wasn't fair but she had long ago figured out that life wasn't fair. It was strange to watch your younger brother grow older than you every day.

"I could do that, which I'd much rather prefer," Stefan whispered and between each word he kissed her cheek, then her nose, then her lips. They never had moments like this anymore, or at least it felt like they didn't. They were always on the go, always helping people. Putting others before themselves. They wouldn't have it any other way, at least not right now. He was sure that the time he was missing with Elena was building and building. He didn't know if this would be the last time he'd see her, or the next. But, he adapted to it and stole time from her where he could.

"He seemed ... okay," Stefan said slowly, watching Elena's face. She was worried, but that was normal. Jeremy had grown into a man and now looked older than both Stefan and Elena. Time had changed him, the world had changed him and he was hard, tough and tired. He went from being caged and taken care of to being the one that was taking care of everyone, just as Elena and Stefan did. Jeremy tried so desperately to get some sort of normal back, but it was a lost effort. It was never going to happen, but Stefan hoped it did.

"He talked about going and getting some people from the farms. To be honest, I think he's going on missions and not telling us, I think he's in contact with someone that's locked up," Stefan explained to her, his hands on her hips, keeping her in place. Stefan could sense that Jeremy was up to something, but he didn't outright ask him. He didn't want to push Jeremy in the other direction so quickly without knowing the facts.

"I don't know why he's so secretive all the time. It's not like I can tell him what to do anymore. I just wish he'd let me in." Elena pouted at that, the corners of her mouth turning downward as she folded her thin arms over her chest and sighed.

Talking about Jeremy could be depressing sometimes. Mostly because Elena was depressed thinking about the way that Jeremy had to grow up and that he was getting older. He wasn't going to be around forever like she was. She wanted a normal happy and healthy life for Jeremy. This was none of those things but she couldn't control the world.

She turned and buried her face in Stefan's chest again, just letting the weight of him around her comfort her. He was her rock, he was always there. As long as she could come home to him everything was going to be okay. She had to believe that.

"The next raid? We should do it together. I hate going on my own," she said. She also knew that Stefan hated when she went on her own but sometimes it needed to be done.

"I don't know why either. We're on the same side," Stefan agreed, rubbing her back and sighing. She moved, burying her face in his chest and he just held her there, even for a moment, stroking her hair and letting her know that this, all of this would be worth something. Someday.

"I'll go with you," Stefan promised, his arms moving around her, pulling her closer. In a swift motion, he picked her up and moved them over to the bed that they shared. He missed her, he missed all of her and to just breathe her in made him almost intoxicated. It had been a long time coming, all of this, them. It was under the worst conditions, but they made it work. They had one goal in mind and they were reaching for it everyday. Together. That's all he wanted.

Stefan moved on his side, watching her face as his fingers started roaming over the exposed skin on her stomach. Her smile matched his, there was so much depth behind it, but his eyes turned serious as he leaned down and kissed her.

"You're so beautiful," he whispered against her lips, then his own lips moved down to her chin, then to her neck. He stole these moments from her, just to be close to her, it's all he needed. He laid back against the mattress and pulled her toward him, holding onto her as he looked up at the ceiling. He felt the hunger and he closed his eyes, pushing it aside for right now.

"Tomorrow night, we'll go."

The corners of her mouth turned up in a genuine smile when he told her she was beautiful. Something about him would always seek his cold comfort. The way his body molded to hers as if they had genuinely been made for one another. She tried not to think about the fact that Katherine's body was her genetic double. She couldn't hate Katherine for everything. She had given him eternal life after all.

She clung to him tightly and sighed, letting out the breath she had been holding. Still, somehow coming back home, laying in bed next to her love made the worries of the world fade away. There were so many worries out there, so many people including some of their own that they needed to rescue. But here they were just Stefan and Elena, snuggling.

"Before we go we should go to the lighthouse and check on Damon." That was code for feeding Damon. Elena refused to believe that Damon was truly dead. She could still hear the whisper thin sound of him inside her head every time they went to visit him. Her own personal Sleeping Beauty. He might never wake up but he wasn't dead and she wouldn't give up on him. Even if she had moved on with Stefan. She still cared about what happened to Damon and she knew that Stefan did too.

Stefan opened his eyes when she mentioned Damon. His brother. He stared up at the ceiling, his arm secure around Elena and she was right. They needed to go and see him. He missed him, they were apart for too long. Not to say they hadn't been apart longer, but this was different. They weren't separated because of hatred or guilt but because they didn't have a choice. Stefan would often go there and talk to him, see him and spend time with him when Elena wasn't around, but when he was with Elena, it was to feed him. He didn't doubt that Elena didn't go and see him on her own, that was her choice and he didn't want to intrude on that. He knew where he stood, where they both stood and why Elena was with him. He never brought it up, there was no point. He loved Elena and he knew that Elena loved him and they trusted each other. That was all that mattered.

"It's been awhile," he said, closing his eyes again and swallowing hard, getting himself comfortable against her again. In Stefan's everyday life, he often questioned himself, asking what would Damon do? Most of the time, he'd ignore it, but those rare times, he actually did it. It would help, sometimes, or it would be a disaster, but him and Elena were still here, Jeremy was still alive so Stefan had no regrets.

"I need to feed," Stefan said suddenly, his eyes opening again and he turned his head, looking down at her. Elena tipped her chin, looking up at him and he rolled on his side. "Are you hungry," he asked. He felt his face involuntarily start to turn, slightly because of the hunger, it had been a few days. The people that were in his camp, exchanged their blood so Stefan and Elena could protect them, but that didn't mean that Stefan would take advantage of it.

"Are you going hunting?" she asked. She sat up quickly as if she hadn't even dozed off for a moment at all. It was easy to sleep in the safety and comfort of Stefan's arms. But she was always ready at a moment's notice to spring into action. Elena wasn't sure if it was the razor sharp reflexes of being a vampire that kept her on constant alert or just the general state of their lives.

Elena didn't feed from animals, which was what Stefan did when he went hunting. Even the larger game like deer could not satisfy her but she understood why Stefan needed the animal blood and he could tolerate it unlike other vampires. He was stronger than the rest. Elena had to drink human blood which meant taking volunteers.

She was usually hungry but she only ate once per day. The rest of the time she drank alcohol and coffee when they could find it. It helped to keep the cravings at bay. She didn't want to risk taking too much from a volunteer, that had happened before and Elena didn't want to repeat the experience. Just like she never wanted to turn that switch off, no matter how much easier it would be.

"I'm okay actually. But if you're hungry I'll go on the hunt with you." She smiled at him. She wouldn't eat anything but she would at least keep him company while he ate.

"I don't know if there's anything out there," Stefan said, a hint of worry in his voice. Stefan had been feeding from the very same wilderness for years upon years now and with others going hunting to cook food, the hunt was lasting longer and longer, often sending him to other towns to just feed. Maybe today would be different. Stefan watched her, still laying down while she sat up. His hand found her knee and he gave it a rub before he sat up himself, running his hand through his messy hair.

"I need to, it's been a few days, there has to be something out there," he said, with a little grump in his voice. He was getting cranky, but he pushed it down. It would be fine, he would survive it. He had survived longer. Moving off the bed, he grabbed a knife, then his jacket and tucked the knife away there as Elena got up as well.

He knew that if he didn't feed soon, he'd be too weak, he could already feel it now, it was getting to him and he had to do something or tomorrow when they did the raid, he'd be not himself, not useful and that was the last thing he wanted. He didn't want to not be there for Elena, that's all he wanted right now.

Holding out his hand, she accepted it willingly and he held onto hers as they walked out of their home.

Elena smiled at people as they passed them. Both she and Stefan were well liked and respected in the community despite being vampires. Actually maybe even because of it. Due to their superior strength and speed they made ideal protectors for the humans at the rebel camp. And most of them didn't mind swapping a bit of blood for that kind of security. Elena would never drink from anyone who wasn't willing though and she would protect them anyway. It was part of the promise she had made the people there.

She squeezed Stefan's hand and when he turned to glance at her she smiled at him reassuringly. Things were always going to be okay as long as they were together. And since they were immortal they would have eternity to be together and Elena liked that. She had detested being a vampire for a long time but then had accepted it. It meant she and Stefan could be together after all.

Once they had reached the shaded darkness of the woods, they broke apart and Elena's senses went into overdrive. There was plenty for Stefan to eat. Chipmunks, squirrels, even a few rabbits she could see moving around in the dark. She could hear all of their tiny heartbeats moving around her. There were plenty of birds in the trees too.

"What are you in the mood for?" she asked him quietly, not wanting to disturb the wildlife.

Stefan held onto her hand until they were out in the woods and they broke apart. He watched her as she moved through the tall grass that led up to the wilderness and he could hear it all around him. Tiny little heartbeats. He pushed through, though, his face alternating between getting pale and his veins pushing through his skin and back to normal. They were quiet though and Stefan eyed a rabbit and stopped moving. He watched it, only for a split second before using his speed to get to it.

He wiped the back of his mouth, feeling better. His eyes were on Elena as she walked toward him, stepping over the now dead animal to get to him. He licked his lips and held up his hands, not wanting to touch her, but that was normal for them. "Come on, let's get back," he said and they walked back to the place they called home.

Once inside, he washed his hands and slipped off his shirt, not bothering to grab another. He pulled the top off of a box and they were down to one bottle of alcohol left. Stefan often didn't drink anymore and he saved it for Elena, who used it to curb her cravings of blood, but he twisted off the cap and took a swig before putting the bottle back in the box.

He felt a lot better now, even with the little bit of blood that he got. He could push himself through a day or two, but he'd have to find something bigger, something to sustain him for awhile. He figured when they went to see Damon, he'd find something else.

Stefan felt her eyes on him and he slowly turned his head, before he turned his body to look at her. He smiled softly, almost shy like at her before walking over to her.

She was watching him because he wasn't saying anything. It wasn't totally out of character for Stefan to be monosyllabic but when he didn't talk she paid extra attention to his body language and the way he spoke to her without speaking at all. She studied his finely chiseled features and noticed the last bottle of alcohol.

"We can find some more later," she said. Things like alcohol were harder to get but some of the people in the rebel camps had figured out how to make moonshine and bathtub gin. And even though Elena found the taste repulsive, it still helped curb her cravings and so she drank it anyway. The stuff was so strong sometimes she even got a little drunk off of it.

She felt his hand at her waist, pulling her closer and she settled against him comfortably. "I love you," she breathed out as she tugged him back to the bed. There were other ways to curb cravings, to push her body to its physical limits, to push his in the same way until they both collapsed into exhaustion.

She kissed him as she pushed his shirt off of his shoulders and flung it on the floor.
