“And now back to Ron, with an update on the Worthington Press Conference. Ron?”
“Thank you, Tom. This is Ron Maroon on the scene at the Gemini Conference Hall. I’m standing on the sidelines here and it looks like the place is slowly filling up. There are some well known faces in the crowd, including some very obvious mutant kind.”
“Do you think any of the mutants there are registered, Ron?”
“I highly doubt it, Tom. In fact this conference seems to be a stand against Mutant Registration. Warren Worthington III, heir to the Worthington estate and a prominent face on Forbes and Fortune 500 until some years ago, is finally making an appearance to speak out. And there is speculation that he is a mutant himself.”
“Well why else would he speak out? Statistics have shown that most of the human population support the Mutant Registration Act and the Sentinel Program.”
“This is true, Tom, but the Worthingtons are known for their philanthropy. And Warren III especially has been known to support some….unique causes. We’ll just have to wait and see.”
Warren eyed the news reporter from backstage. What was he saying to the world about this moment? Was he being unbiased?
“Warren, you’re on in two.”
The blonde turned to his publicist and nodded, thanking her for everything. He shuffled the index cards in his hand nervously then turned back around to look out at the stage. Dazzler sat there proudly in typical yet professional attire. He was so happy it worked out with her being there. A glance at the crowd and he saw reassuring faces from Haven. Ruth had special seating especially close to the stage, and Warren couldn’t help but notice she looked worried. He’d been meaning to apologize for the night before, but he was very focused on the speech today. Charles and Erik were almost intimidating to see; Warren hoped to make them proud, a projection of what he couldn’t do for his own father anymore.
Residents of Haven were scattered throughout the crowd. He looked at each familiar face and reminded himself he was doing this for them. A hand touched his shoulder.
“It’s time.”
Warren took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage. There were gasps throughout the crowd, then rising applause. It let Warren know he’d done pretty well to hide the fact that he was a mutant until now. He lifted his hands and wings to acknowledge everyone. When it quieted down, he began.
“Thank you so much for joining me in the Gemini Conference Hall tonight. I’m hoping today will be a catalyst towards a better outlook on the future.
Many have wondered where I’ve been these past few years. My wonderful publicist, Claudia, has helped me maintain a low profile. But after the events of January 18th, I can no longer sit in the background. As you can see, I was affected by the solar flare, like so many who are among us today. Not just my appearance, but I was affected by the many that were lost. My mother, Kathryn Worthington, was among those that died.
The future was suddenly a bleak place for me. Because of these events, my family was torn apart, I had to relinquish my titles and live in hiding. But since I’ve been living and working with wonderful people who’ve been affected like me, I’ve learned that there’s a better future through choice. A choice that extends to all of us today; to accept these events and rise in hope, or live in fear and cling to the past. The events of January 18th show that there are those in power who fear change and are doing everything to keep things the same. Please consider with me the repercussions.....”
