Who: Ginny Weasley and Ellie Cattermole
When: Tonight (Jan. 23, 1998)
Where: Hogwarts halls
What: Scene Lottery! A younger year is practicing a cheering charm and someone end up with the giggles
Rating: low
Open/Closed: Closed

Ellie was bored. Alfie and Audrey were both involved with other people and so Ellie was trying to be nice about it and not bother them as much. After all they probably wanted to spend time with their significant others and she couldn’t begrudge them that. She was certain that if she had a significant other she’d want to spend a great deal of time with them as well. Plus everything was so new for Audrey and Fiona and Ellie assumed that it was definitely important for them to be alone together.

And that was why she was wandering the halls of Hogwarts alone on a Saturday without a real destination in mind or any plans on what she could do. Had she been thinking more about what she was doing then perhaps she would have explored Hogwarts some more since it was so large and changing all of the time, but she wasn’t really thinking about things like that. Her mind drifted from thoughts of what was going on, which brought up worries about her mum, and the normal things that girls her age thought about. Almost unbidden her conversation with her brother from not too long ago came up to mind and she chuckled quietly, remembering how he’d basically told her to get in trouble.

She didn’t plan on honestly getting in any trouble though. She wasn’t one for confrontations if she could avoid them. Sure she’d sent Capper that anonymous owl and had to scratch out bits of comments to her or Weasley, but that wasn’t really getting in trouble. No, that was her voicing her displeasure at how Capper had handled her relationship with Audrey. Or rather how she hadn’t handled ending it. It still rankled her when she thought about it and she found herself getting annoyed, but her attention was pulled back to the real world when she had to dodge a bright burst of light heading toward her and she turned toward a sheepish third year practicing spells in the corridor.

“Hey now! Watch what you are doing. You aren’t even allowed to practice in the halls and if you are going to then you definitely need to make sure you don’t hit someone!” She rolled her eyes and grinned at the muttered apologies and babble about Charms and how hard it was before waving the student off and starting up again. Of course she’d only just started up again when she had to dodge again to stop from having a near collision with a human body. That just went to show her that she needed to practice what she preached. It wouldn’t do for her to run someone down after getting on the third year to watch their spellwork.

“Oops. Sorry,” Ellie said, turning to the person she’d nearly ran down with an apologetic smile.

“You... You didn’t do anything? Are you insane?! You did too!” How could she even think that her hooking up with Samantha Capper while Sam was with Audrey was nothing? That was unforgivable and there was no way that Ellie was going to let her brush it away as though it were completely insignificant. She had a serious urge to hex the annoying girl in front of her and it was only the fact she didn’t like violence that stopped her from even attempting it. “What about Audrey? Huh? It was all just ok as long as you and Capper are happy?”

At Ellie's words, a part of Ginny froze. Sam hadn't said she was with Audrey. She'd said it was nothing official, that they'd just been flirty friends. And who was she going to trust. Her girlfriend? Or some random mad Hufflepuff? "Yeah?" Ginny shot back, against her better judgement. "What about Audrey? Is it my fault Sam likes me better?"

"I don't care if Capper likes you better or not! She should have told Audrey properly. But no, she had to hear it over a journal entry where you publicly asked for the location of your girlfriend!" She cut herself off and took a deep breath in and then out, trying to calm down. "That was a rotten way to go about letting her know and if you two don't realize that then neither of you are very good people."

Ginny made a show of rolling her eyes. "She should just grow up. Shit happens. They were never together in the first place," she shot back, needling Ellie and trying to rile her back up. She needed this release. "So she needs to get over my girlfriend and move the fuck on. And if she can't, that's not my fault and it certainly isn't Sam's fault."

"She's good and over Capper, thank you. But that still doesn't mean that how it was handled was right. And if they weren't together, like you say, then Capper clearly needs to learn how how to not lead people on." And as of this moment Ellie was beginning to believe that they both needed to learn manners. It wasn't like Ellie really knew what to expect in a relationship either, but if she'd been snogging the other person too without them both saying it was just for fun then she'd have come to the conclusion that they meant something as well.

Ginny nodded, pulling a sardonic face. "Sure," she shot back, drawing out the middle syllable of the word. "If she wasn't still hung up on my girlfriend, why do you always have that stupid look on your face whenever you see me?" Regardless of if things had gone down the way Cattermole was claiming they had, no one talked about Sam badly and got away with it.

"If she were still hung up on Capper then I assure you that I'd be doing more. As for the look, well," she paused and looked at Ginny as though she were considering the other girl. "It's because you are a slag." She shrugged unconcernedly as though it were a common occurrence to call someone that. She had briefly wondered it it were too harsh a word since she was doing her best to never curse, but she didn't think that particular word would fall under that category. She couldn't certainly think of worse things to call her.

Ginny leaned back a little and stared at Ellie for a moment. "And I'm a slag, why exactly?" She asked, not even trying to hide her contemptuous smirk. "Because your friend is deluded?" Ginny tightened her fists at her side in an attempt to hold back her anger. As wound up as she was, it wouldn't be a good idea to get into a fight in a public corridor like this.

"Because you are definitely showing yourself to be a worthless person," Ellie replied back, her arms dropping to her sides as she balled her hands into fists. She as really and truly starting to get annoyed with Weasley and she had the urge to do something that would land her in a right spot of trouble if they got caught. "Audrey is not deluded. Capper just needs to learn to use her better judgment and realize that announcing to the school your dating someone else after you'd just recently been snogging with someone else isn't the best idea in the world."

"Sam did use better judgement," Ginny shot back, her fingers hovering over her wand pocket. Logically, she knew it wasn't Ellie that was upsetting her. It was everything else going on, the missing people and what Sam had to go through, but Cattermole was presenting such an easy target that it was hard for her to not haul off and slap the other girl. "She chose me."

Ellie was desperately hoping she hadn't hear what she'd heard from the other girl. In the past she'd never really heard anything bad about Weasley from anyone else unless they were a Slytherin. But tonight she was showing how horrid she really was. "Excuse me?! You most definitely are not a better choice, or person, then Audrey! Audrey hasn't put you down or sad a bad thing about Capper despite the fact she has every right too, so I suggest you think before you open that ugly mouth of yours and say something someone'll make you regret."

Before Ginny'd even realised what had happened, her wand was out, in her hand and wavering in Ellie's direction. "You have no fucking idea," she ground out, her voice edged with hysteria. She needed to get away from Ellie, back to the dorm, back to Sam, right now, but she couldn't pull herself away. "What kind of person I am. I am a person with remarkable restraint."

She took a deep shaky breath and blinked away tears. This wasn't going as planned at all. Fighting with Ellie didn't make her feel better, it didn't take the edge off her stress, it just made her feel like scum. "Don't you say another word about Sam."

When Ellie left Hufflepuff this evening she definitely hadn't planned on running into anyone and starting a verbal altercation. And even if she had then she most certainly would have never planned for it to go further then that. But as it was she now found herself in the halls of Hogwarts with Ginny Weasley's wand pointed at her and a threat that basically said she should watch her words carefully. The only problem was that while the wand was a threat Ellie was still riled up and had not taken kindly to the cruel words Ginny had uttered about Audrey.

It was also her eyes trained on Ginny's wand that stopped her from noticing the tears in her eyes and so she assumed that the shaky breath was due to anger. "You started the conversation, Weasley, and it has to do with Capper. If you don't want something said about her then stop bad mouthing Audrey and continue on your way. Until then you're going to get what you give, end of story."

"Me?!" Ginny responded, resisting the urge to throw her hands in the air. "You're the one who - " She stopped, suddenly, struck with a realisation, and lowered her wand. "You're the one who sent that stupid owl, aren't you?" That stupid, laughable owl. Ginny dropped her arm, her wand still in her hand, her voice mocking. "You're mean. I don't like you." She gave a harsh laugh. "Grow up."

Ellie gave a small, barely noticable wince at the mention of the owl. She'd been so mad when she wrote it and had fully intended to send it in its entirety, but the walk from Hufflepuff to the Owlery had calmed her down. By the time she had an owl actually down and ready to send it she'd been biting her lip in indecision. So she'd pulled out a muggle pen she kept on her and scratched it out and had ended the letter with what Ginny had just quoted. She definitely didn't want it thrown back in her face now and she'd never sent another like she'd originally planned.

But to hear Ginny mocking her about it now made Ellie snap and before she'd even registered what she'd done her hand lashed out and she slapped Ginny hard across the face. Of course at the feel of her hand striking skin her eyes widened impossibly and she dropped her hand to the side, taking a shaking step backward. "Oh Merlin. I can't- I don't believe. Oh Merlin."

Ginny's jaw dropped at the slap. She'd certainly never expected to strike her, and before she could react, hit her back or yell, or anything, Ginny didn't even know what, there was a bright flash of light from the other end of the corridor.

Having stepped back, the spell just missed Ellie and struck Ginny full on and she wavered for a moment before exploding into giggles, Ellie's palmprint clearly visible on her cheek.

Ellie couldn't believe she'd done that. She'd never hit anyone before. She'd certainly thought of walking up to Sam and laying one on her when Audrey had been so distraught over everything, but she never would have honestly acted on it. But now she'd gone and done it and it'd been Ginny and not Sam. And there was a niggling thought that perhaps Ginny wasn't truly aware despite her siding with Sam and being nasty and guilt was already eating at Ellie.

"I- I can't- I don't know- I just-," her sentences were cut off and halting as she stared in horror at the red imprint on Ginny's face and then she looked down at her hand as though it was something foreign before she took another step back from the other girl. And out of all the possible reactions she could have had giggling didn't even rank and Ellie vaguely remembered the third year practicing spellwork just a little further down the hall and realized what must have happened. She didn't voice it though, instead she gave one last look at Ginny before turning fully and darting away.

Ellie didn't stop for anyone or anything until she reached Hufflepuff and then her dorm room. She threw herself into her bed, grabbed her journal and pulled her curtains shut, tucking her knees up close to her chest. She rested her journal on her knees and cracked it opening, scrawling a messy and hasty message to Audrey and casting a privacy spell with shakey hands.
