For all the chaos of the last two days, and the danger and fear and doubt that hang in the air, the Professors (most of them at least) believed that the students ought to have one thing that might distract them from the sense of worry and doom that had settled over not just the castle, but the wizarding world at large. It was the New Year. An end to 1997, a beginning to 1998, and even in the midst of everything the New Year was meant for hope for the future and companionship.

This was the reason that after dinner students were sent away from the Great Hall, and Professors and the Headmistress set to work on transforming. When the first students began to come back in just before ten, it barely resembled the usual Hall at all. Fairy lights twinkled in every corner, the great tables had been replaced by smaller, round tables, and the buffet of snacks and party favours set up by the House Elves dominated the east wall.

Music played, there was a section of the room set away as a dance floor, and in the center of the Hall itself a giant sparkling ball hovered in the hair, set to drop at midnight.

It had been a difficult few days for Su - she had never been keen on having things forced upon her, and these latest decrees just drove the knife deeper. Suddenly, it was more than a mere annoyance of having a curfew imposed, of being reluctant to return home. She was genuinely frightened now. She wasn't about to show it, of course, but this past week's events had shaken her. As much as it disturbed her to think it, she would have to write home this week, and it would probably be to warn them that they needed to flee for reasons that they couldn't truly fathom.

Unsurprisingly, Su had been strangely quiet lately. She'd kept to herself much more than usual, but had decided that this party was probably a necessity. When did she say no to a social event? At the very least, it would be fun to spend some quality time with friends, enjoy some festivities, try to pretend everything wasn't going horribly wrong. It was New Year's, after all.

Arriving in the dress she'd received for Christmas, Su made a beeline for the refreshments. Her mouth was dry, and the punch looked inviting. As she spooned herself a serving, she noticed Professor Tonks nearby.

"Hi, Professor!" Su chirped, "Happy New Year. Almost."
