For all the chaos of the last two days, and the danger and fear and doubt that hang in the air, the Professors (most of them at least) believed that the students ought to have one thing that might distract them from the sense of worry and doom that had settled over not just the castle, but the wizarding world at large. It was the New Year. An end to 1997, a beginning to 1998, and even in the midst of everything the New Year was meant for hope for the future and companionship.

This was the reason that after dinner students were sent away from the Great Hall, and Professors and the Headmistress set to work on transforming. When the first students began to come back in just before ten, it barely resembled the usual Hall at all. Fairy lights twinkled in every corner, the great tables had been replaced by smaller, round tables, and the buffet of snacks and party favours set up by the House Elves dominated the east wall.

Music played, there was a section of the room set away as a dance floor, and in the center of the Hall itself a giant sparkling ball hovered in the hair, set to drop at midnight.
