Who: Maisie and Alfie
What: Sibling luncheon!
When: July 6, 2003 around lunch time.
Where: Muggle London, Papa Leno’s Italian restaurant.
Rating/Warning: Probably low/Cuteness?

Although things had been rough on and off, lately Maisie had just been working a little too much. She had most of the things she’d ever wanted. She lived in a great flat with a nice view, she had pinched her knuts and saved up enough to live pretty comfortably, and she had a job doing something that she loved. The thing she lacked, however, was enough time spent with her family and her friends. She was a bit lonely, even if she didn’t often say it, though the weekend had been alright because she got to spend a little time with Ellie, and then she’d made arrangements to meet up with Alfie for lunch. That morning, she’d even contacted a friendly acquaintance of hers, and it was looking like she might end up with a roommate after all.

The youngest Cattermole had a little bit of a bounce in her step as she walked down the street in muggle London. She had apparated into an ally near the restaurant she’d agreed to meet Alfie at for lunch, and then proceeded to walk the rest of the way. Even the weather seemed to be at least somewhat cooperative. It wasn’t totally sunny, but it wasn’t too overcast either. She reached Papa Leno’s in relatively short order and slipped into one of the booths, taking the seat that faced the door so that her brother would be sure to spot her. It had been too long since she’d seen him, she thought. It didn’t seem fair, but they did both have separate lives to live.

She chewed on her lip anxiously, her feet bouncing restlessly, as she looked over the menu. She already knew what she wanted, but it gave her something to do. Maisie always had a hard time sitting still, especially when she was excited over something. Every bit of her behavior was normal for her, a familiar habit. She gave an unconscious sigh, and glanced at the door again. Why she had to show up entirely too early was beyond her. What she did know was that she wouldn’t be able to wipe the smile off of her face once her brother arrived. He was, after all, her favorite and only brother.

"Right, and you'd get perverts, and then I'd have to kill them, and then I'd go to Azkaban and you'd have to marry Julien...." Which had made sense when he'd thought about it, but not so much when he said it. Alfie snorted, though, and took a drink of his coke.

"Don't go getting a roommate that's a bloke, okay? Because I'd hate to have to sleep on your sofa all the time."

Rolling her eyes at her brother, Maisie couldn’t help but grin, “I don’t think Julien would have me, Alfie. I’d be a poor replacement for you, I’d wager. Not quite tall enough, and my hair is way too long,” she joked, though she disliked the thought of anything bad ever happening to Alfie. She generally stayed away from all subjects that could potentially hurt anyone in any way, feelings or otherwise.

She got a little bit of a wicked glint in her eye though, when he gave his warning, as only little sister’s could, “Aw, why not, Alfie? I like blokes. Blokes are loads of fun, and I bet they’d even offer a bit of protection, yeah? Maybe I should get two or three of them as roommates. That would make me super safe, right?”

Alfie quite literally turned red with the effort it took not to yell at her to stop it. He'd almost accepted that Ellie was able to have relationships, though she hadn't really that he'd seen, he wasn't ready to accept that his baby sister thought blokes were loads of fun.

"Seriously, you don't want me on your sofa every night either, do you? Hexing every bloke that comes through the door..."

Seeing her brother turn red wasn’t exactly her intention, but she had to say that it was a nice bonus. She knew that it probably wasn’t a treat for him to think about her and boys, but it wasn’t any more of a treat for her to think about him or Ellie having a relationship. Siblings just weren’t meant to think carefully about those kinds of things, she thought.

She looked at him thoughtfully for a moment, “Wouldn’t Julien miss you?” But then she gave a little bit of a defeated sigh, “Fine, fine. I won’t get a boy roomie...at least not yet. Maybe in a few years if I’ve actually got a relationship to speak of, because I’ll have you know that as of right now, my romantic life is nonexistent. No worries.”

"Julien would miss me when he's home," Alfie grinned, then shrugged. "You'd probably understand a lot more of what he talks about when he comes home than I do though, he's about a thousand times smarter than me, if you haven't noticed." And Alfie would never tell him, but sometimes he got a little bored of not understanding anything his boyfriend talked about when it came to charms and theoretical work.

"I didn't really know you were looking for a roommate again, though. I figured when you really started looking, Ellie might move in with you." He had no idea why he'd thought that, but Alfie sometimes assumed a lot of things that didn't make much sense.

"You hear about her day care idea?"

It was true that Maisie was pretty brilliant in charms and transfiguration, but she wasn’t much of a bragger, and she definitely wasn’t about to say that she would understand the things that Julien talked about. He probably knew loads that she didn’t. Just because she could reverse most charm and transfiguration mishaps and was an animagus, it didn’t mean that she was smart like Julien, “I don’t know, Alfie,” she said truthfully, “I probably wouldn’t go so far as to say a thousand times smarter. I mean, he’s an intellectual though. No doubt about that. I probably wouldn’t understand much more than you though. I’m more practical. Yeah, I have to consider how something works in order to judge what is best to use in a situation, but theory is sometimes a bit over my head.”

When Alfie mentioned that he thought she might take Ellie as a roommate, Maisie felt a bit surprised, but tried not to show it. She never really thought much about the possibility...she just thought Ellie probably wouldn’t be interested. Plus, she didn’t know how well it would really work out. As much as Maisie loved Ellie...she always felt like she was striving for something when they were together, something that never felt quite like it was there. Alfie and Ellie had always been closest and Maisie...well, she’d always been the one on the outside. To consider Ellie sharing her flat was kind of a foreign concept, “I was just considering it, and Rose suddenly mentioned she was looking. I didn’t think a whole lot about it when I asked her, honestly...I don’t know, I guess I just thought Ellie wouldn’t want to. I’d probably cramp her style or something.”

She nodded pleasantly though, when Alfie asked about the day care, the knot that had formed in her stomach loosening a little bit, “She mentioned it a few times, yeah. I might very well end up being her own, personal AMR Squad member when it’s all said and done. Lots of magical children in one environment will probably make for a nightmare of accidents on occasion.”

"Yeah, that sounds like a good idea." Alfie hadn't even thought about the possible dangers of having so many magical children all in one place. The accidents that could happen. He wondered, suddenly, if Ellie had thought of all the ways to safeguard herself. He didn't want to see his sister, either of them, hurt because she was trying to do something good.

Then again, Ellie probably had it under control. Right?

"I can help safeguard the place before she gets it open, I guess. Not the charming and such, you're better at that, but I can... I don't know. Pad the walls or something." Which made him imagine a gaggle of wizard toddlers in straight-jackets, and he started to laugh.

At the mention of safeguards, Maisie gave a bit of a grin, laughing right along with her brother, “Wall padding might very well come in handy. You handle that, and I’ll handle the charms. Well be a perfect team,” She liked the thought of helping out both of her siblings, of spending time with both of them, bonding over something. So often, she felt as though she didn’t entirely belong that anything of the sort always made her happier.

Afie snorted, but he was smiling still - he liked the idea of them working together. It was a shame they couldn't do something where they all worked in the same place more often.

"Oh, did I tell you? I got the job for Longbottom? He's going to teach at Hogwarts, I guess, so he needed someone else to run it and then take care of the produce and everything. He owned that fruit and veg stall that you see in Diagon..."

Her smile grew a little brighter when Alfie mentioned the produce stand that he was going to be looking after now. It was something she knew that her brother would be good at, and probably even somewhat enjoy as well. They'd always had a rather good time working with their grandfather, "You mentioned it briefly when we made plans, but saying it in person is so much different. I'll have to stop by there sometime and take some things off your hands. You think you'll like it?"

"I think it'll be the best paying job I've had," Alfie said with a shrug, but his smile said that, yes, he thought he'd like it. "Longbottom's a good bloke, too. He's letting me almost take it over completely, really. And everything he doesn't sell in a day he sends to different charities."
