Bad Moon Rising
Who: Bill and Fleur Weasley
Where: Saint Mungo's, then Shell Cottage
When: Saturday into Sunday
What: Full moon and hospital release
Rating: PG, likely.

The bandages on his cheek and leg were gone, and all that was left for Bill to face at Saint Mungo's was the dreaded full moon. The Healers were near certain that he'd come out unscathed, but it was better to be safe than sorry and they'd booked him a cell in the transformation ward for the night.

It was early evening, an hour or so before moon rise, and Bill paced very slowly across the hospital room, leaning heavily on a cane. His leg, mangled in the attack, would still take weight but not very steadily. The irreversible scarring was so immense that the Healers had informed him it was very likely he'd always have a limp. With time, he'd be able to lose the cane, but not until he rebuilt the muscle.

He was unsure what to expect when it came to the full moon, but he did feel different. The hospital food, already rather disgusting, had proved revolting this morning. The sausages tasted overcooked to the point of boot leather and his lunch meat later in the day was too bland to eat. He desperately wanted a good, juicy steak but had to settle for some hot cereal instead.

And there was the fever, and the restlessness. He was burning up and uncomfortable. The scars left by Fenrir itched terribly but he was admonished by the Mediwitch for scratching. Throughly disgruntled and feeling a bit sorry for himself, Bill flopped down on the edge of his hospital bed and looked at Fleur with a frown.

"I would like to go home now, please," he said, giving her his best puppy dog eyes.

Fleur had been spending most of her waking hours (at least, those not spent at work or making sure things were still in order at Shell) in Bill's room at St. Mungo's. This had been one of the most painful experiences of her life, which she felt terribly for admitting because compared to Bill her physical injuries had been negligible. All that time spent not knowing if he would recover, and then realizing how long he would be here, and that he would surely not be completely back to normal even after recovery.

She rose from the chair next to the bed and sat next to Bill lightly, as though disturbing the state of the bed would make things worse. Offering a tender smile, Fleur moved closer to him and wove her arm carefully through his, clasping his hand. The scars, she had been surprised to find, were barely noticeable to her. Though others had certain been shocked by the damage, to Fleur, Bill looked perfectly himself - she didn't care about his changed appearance; not everyone could say their husband had been scarred in battle.

"I know, mon lapin...believe me, I have been wanting that since the day after this happened. Tomorrow, they have said," she said firmly, settling her head against his shoulder. "And if they try to keep you here a day more, I assure you I will not have it."

There was little doubt in Fleur's mind that the administrators and medical staff of St. Mungo's rather hated her by now, and would be glad to see her go. Since that first night, she had been forcefully a part of anything they intended to do for Bill - or attempted to be - and openly angry when she was told it was not her place. As a result, the weeks since the attack has crawled along sluggishly, and when her husband implored to go home, now, it was a feeling she entirely sympathized with.

He kissed the top of her head affectionately.

"I know," he sighed. "Soon, yes. It'll be nice to be back in our own bed."

He glanced towards the door where Healers and Mediwitches hurried by past the glass window. A bit of anxiety was beginning to grow in the back of his mind. He'd been told what to expect; a padded cell until they were sure the moon didn't affect him; but he was still nervous.

"When I go in tonight," he said to Fleur. "You'll stay here? I shouldn't be too long. Healer Jones said they'd let me back in here after an hour if nothing happened and then we're free to go in the morning."

He knew that as much as the impending events were weighing on his own mind, they had to be bothering Fleur just as much if not more.

Turning, he coughed a little into the crook of his arm and rubbed his throat irritably.

"I just would like to get it over with," he said, glancing towards the door again.

At the thought of Bill being forced to sit in a cell by himself, for any amount of time, as though he were some sort of dangerous animal, Fleur felt her stomach clench. She knew she ought not to be angry - by all accounts, Bill was possibly dangerous now. It was the fact that she was being forced to face that reality that Fleur didn't like. What if something happened in there? What if they didn't allow him to leave? What if...Fleur sighed, a little frown creasing her brow.

"Of course I will stay," she said, a bit more sharply than she'd meant to. Her grip on his hand tightened and she straightened up, giving Bill a hard look. "It will be fine. The hour will pass and they will see that there is nothing wrong with you. And when you come back out I will be here waiting and we will go home, finally."

Fleur's expression softened a bit, and her gaze wandered to Bill's injured leg. "Did they say what will be done if...if something does happen?"

He hadn't really dwelt on the thought of that, but the Healers had given him some indication.

"They said the blood spells didn't show any of the right chemicals for it to happen, and that if anything did it would only be a partial transformation. It'll hurt, I know that. Otherwise, I don't have a clue. They'll keep me locked up, I suppose. They've got a whole block of cells down there for new cases and werewolves under medical treatment. I hear they're nicer than the Ministry ones, at least."

There was a knock on the door and he looked up to see the lead Healer assigned to his case.

"I guess it's time," Bill said, turning to Fleur. Leaning in, he kissed her tenderly. "I'll be back soon, okay? Don't be scared."

Fleur nodded, closely her eyes and leaning her forehead against his briefly. She tried to smile again, but it probably seemed more like a grimace. The knot in her stomach was showing no signs of letting up, even if she had been able to forget it for a moment.

"Right," she told him. Honestly, she felt he had much more reason to be afraid than she did. The next hour was still going to feel like an eternity, she was sure. Fleur fixed the Healer with a stony look before feeling a bit guilty for doing so and lowering her eyes. They weren't the villains, but they were the easiest ones to be angry at right now.

"You will be fine, Bill. In only a few hours you will be back home," For good measure, she kissed him a second time and said, very certainly, "Where the food is not this horrible hospital...slop." Her smile was more genuine this time.

"Good," he said, squeezing her hand. "I look forward to it."

He stood slowly, cane in hand, and hobbled over to the door. He glanced back at Fleur as he left, offering a small, reassuring smile, and then disappeared down the hall.

The Healer led him to a lift that took them down to the bottom level of Saint Mungo's, to a long block of stone cells. Already feverish and anxious, Bill felt suddenly nauseous at the sight. A few cells down, another Healer accompanied a young woman who was visibly shaking. Bill locked eyes with her for a moment and felt a pang of guilt. She was clearly in for a long night and he'd hopefully be in and out.

The Healer unlocked a cell and Bill made his way inside. There was a neatly folded blanket in the corner and nothing else.

"Err, sorry," the Healer said. "We don't do beds anymore because they always got torn to shreds and the mending spells stopped working."

"It's fine," Bill said, leaning his cane against the wall and sliding down to sit on the floor. He curled up with the blanket tucked around him and closed his eyes.

He tried to sleep as the moon rose but he was uncomfortable and his head ached dully behind his eyes. A sudden pain shot down his wounded leg as he heard the werewolf in the nearby cell begin to scream. This was it.

The real torture wasn't the moon itself but the experience of hearing the woman transform. Of all the things that ached and pained him, it was the screams that were the worst. Once they'd faded into the soft snarls of a caged werewolf, Bill focused on his own body and found he felt almost the same. Yes, the leg hurt, and yes he felt strangely energetic and exhausted all at once, but he was still human.

He pulled the blanket tighter and waited, observing that he could now clearly distinguish smells he hadn't noticed before and that objects in the dim hallway appeared sharper. Everything was slightly heightened so that when the Healer returned to check on him, Bill had heard him coming from much further away.

"I feel okay," he reported, pulling himself to his feet with the help of the cane. "Still sore and all that stuff, but no different."
The Healer performed a few basic diagnostic spells through the cage bars and then, satisfied, opened the door to allow him back upstairs.

He wasn't sure he'd ever been more relieved. He had as much of a spring in his step as he could managed with the bum leg as he made his way back to his room to meet Fleur.

He pushed open the door with a smile.

"All clear!" he reported happily.

Somehow, Fleur had managed to very nearly doze off on Bill's bed as the hour passed. She owed it up to nerves and stress, and the anxiety about returning home. Now that the time was drawing near, she was more aware of her fears that, perhaps, Shell Cottage was no longer safe. She was lying on her side, eyes half closed, when Bill reentered the room. Almost instantly, Fleur forgot about her misgivings and sprang up. She closed the distance between the bed and the door in only a few strides.

"Yes?" Overlooking Bill's injuries in her relief, Fleur threw her arms around his neck and embraced him tightly before remembering his condition and loosening her hold. She beamed up at him, examining his face as though looking for signs of a transformation that had never come. "How was it?"

He kissed her deeply, closing his eyes and inhaling the smell of her hair.

"Fine," he said as he released her. "Could have been much worse. I still don't feel my best but they said as long as I don't Apparate on my own, I can go home. Do you think you can side-along me or should we take the Knight Bus?"

"Side-along."

Bill had barely been able to finish voicing his question when Fleur gave her answer. The tone of her voice made it quite clear that the other option wasn't even worth considering - the Knight Bus had never appealed to Fleur to begin with, but now it only seemed like something to further impede their homecoming.

She turned briskly and walked back to the bed, beginning to tidy her things and organizing the few personal effects that remained in the room. "I can manage it, just as I did before. And it will be quicker, and less..." The word 'common' was the first that came to mind, but she rethought that one. "...filthy."

"Good," Bill agreed, gathering his things from the nightstand and taking a final look around the room. "Good riddance."

Extending a hand to Fleur, he took a deep breath, preparing himself for the strange sensation that came with Apparating. No sooner than he'd closed his eyes, he felt the tug somewhere around his navel and re-appeared on the hillside near Shell Cottage alongside Fleur. His leg buckled beneath him as his feet re-met the ground and he stumbled, dropping his cane and tumbling to the grass.

"Bloody hell," he groaned, reaching for the stick and moving to push himself back to his feet. "Fuck that creature. Stupid bloody fuckin' Fenrir Greyback."

He wasn't feeling sorry for himself or anything; it was just sheer frustration at the lack of coordination. He'd always prided himself on being fairly graceful and now he was a wobbly mess.

Fleur crouched down, peering at Bill with concern but not rushing to help. It wasn't a lack of caring - she just knew that if she were in his position, she wouldn't want to be coddled. A matter of pride, of course, and she knew that Bill, even injured, was capable. Still, she grabbed the walking stick and put it in his hand, standing as he did so. She stood by, in case he did falter again.

His language, while it may ordinarily have bothered her and been cause for a reprimand, had quite an opposite effect tonight. She felt exactly the same way about Greyback. If given the chance to fight him again, Fleur had no doubt that she'd jump at it. Even if he was an utterly horrifying individual.

"He will be dealt with," she offered, trying to sound resolute. It didn't seem like anything that would happen any time soon, but Fleur had hope that this would all end in the near future. "And if he thinks he can set foot near our home again, and threaten any of use, he will be very unpleasantly surprised."

Still frowning, she looked Bill up and down. "Do you need help to the house?"

Taking her arm gingerly, Bill began walking again.

"Just go slow with me," he said. "And he most certainly won't be coming here again anytime soon. If what I remember of that night is true, you gave him a run for his money."

They reached the house and Bill pushed the door open gently.

"The lot of them should be asleep, I think," he whispered, glancing over his shoulder towards the night sky where the moon loomed high above. "I'm tired but I need a shower something terrible."

Moving as quietly as he could down the hall to their room, he flipped on the light and heaved a sigh of relief at the sight of their bed.

"Home, sweet, home."
