Characters: Maeve Sheridan and Felicity Radford
Setting: Tuesday evening during dinner hours in the back sections of the Library
Summary: Maeve is on a quest to keep herself out of harms way and exposure and possibly gets interrupted during the research stage.
Rating/Warning: PG

It was hard to find a time when the Library was ever really deserted but Maeve had found that during dinner hours was usually a safe bet to try for privacy. And when you were concerned about who was going to be around to see what you were reading and what stacks you were looking for that was vitally important. As far as Maeve was concerned there wasn't much else that came to mind that could be more important.

She walked down the aisles glancing down each one as she passed, checking out who else was skipping dinner. As she'd guessed, there was only a meagre handful of fellow students and most of them were occupying the tables or the more popular sections near the front. Maeve turned down where the herbology section started but bypassed all the books, coming out at the other end of the row where she could continue walking out of sight of everyone else. Further into the depths of the library the sections became more obscure and dustier, visited by students much more sporadically. Which Maeve didn't mind in the least.

The genealogy books took up only a few shelves in a neglected corner, sandwiched between the magical languages and the very beginning of magical history. She supposed it was possible that someone felt so compelled to find out the Mermish word for potato or Pre-Egyptian wizards that they would deny themselves dinner rather than wait an hour but she still felt she was as safe as she was going to get and set her bag down to look through the few shelves. It was most likely that someone, or a couple of someones, would stumble upon her in a hormonal quest for privacy but she was willing to take that chance as well. Her finger ran along the titles and she plucked out everything that looked at all helpful until she had a sizeable stack.

She sat down with her back against the Gobbledegook and turned her stack so the titles were facing the shelves. She sat cross-legged and rested Pratt's Peerage in her lap and started flipping through. Eventually she pulled out a roll of parchment and her quill, laying them beside her so she could take notes as needed. Everyday things got worse for the Muggleborn students and so far she had remained overlooked. The fact offered her little consolation though as she knew it was only a matter of time before the Death Eaters running things started digging deeper into the students backgrounds. And she wasn't going to sit around waiting to be exposed. After a few minutes the dust got to her and she sneezed, hearing a noise from a few aisles away and froze up. Maeve waited to see if anything came of it before she waved her wand at the parchment, charming the lineage notes to look like translations instead, and went back to reading.

Felicity had debated between going to dinner and following her dormmate to wherever she was so furtively heading. In the end, curiosity won out over hunger and she trailed behind the girl. She hadn't come upstairs intending to stalk Maeve, she'd just noticed the other girl and her behaviour had been too intriguing to pass up further inspection.

She trailed the other girl to the library and inwardly sighed, hoping she hadn't misread body language and was about to be spying on a study session. But then again, who came to the library to study during dinner? Maybe Maeve was meeting someone, Felicity pondered, ducking after her through the increasingly dusty stacks. That could be interesting.

Not that Felicity liked watching other students snog, but if Maeve was sneaking around, it was obviously someone or something she wanted to keep a secret and Felicity did like secrets.

So far Maeve had just grabbed several books from the shelves and settled down and Felicity clung to one of the shelves, trying to see through the books and catch a title. She was unable to and frowned, moving closer and tripping over a stack of books someone had left in the aisle.

Maeve heard that, there was no doubt, and Felicity shook her head, then rounded the corner, pulling a surprised face. "Maeve!" she simpered, delicately settling herself down across from the girl. "Didn't you hear me calling?"

Maeve felt her stomach churn nervously and gripped her book tightly, holding it down in her lap like it was about to jump away from her. "No," she answered plainly, her mind racing through the possible reasons that might have compelled her dorm mate to follow her. "I'm sorry," she added after another moment, taking care to look as natural and at ease as she could. Even if she did feel tense and slightly nauseated.

She gave herself a moment to assess the situation and calm down slightly, she'd thought this plan out and had story after story to cover her if it came to it. And Felicity was nowhere near as smart as her, another advantage. "Did you need something?"

Felicity noticed the way Maeve held the book, but took her time tugging her skirt into place around her instead of calling the other girl on it. "Notes," she answered simply, after a moment, stretching her legs out in front of her and demurely crossing them at the ankle, taking a moment to admire the way her shoes looked. She truly did have impeccable fashion sense, it was a shame that others didn't appreciate her skill the way they should have.

"For Potions?" She pulled an innocent face, making a move as if to reach out for the notebook in Maeve's lap.

"They're in my bag," she said simply, placated by the other girl's use of her preferred subject. It wasn't hard for her to believe that Felicity would need all the help she could get in the difficult field. But she noticed the gesture and resisted the urge to pull the book back towards herself protectively, instead she nodded at the bag off to her side. "Help yourself."

Waving her wand, Felicity summoned Maeve's bag, digging through it for a moment before pulling out a few sheets of paper. There'd been nothing else of interest in the bag, which didn't surprise Fel. She flicked her wand and settled the other girl's bag back beside her.

"Thanks," she chirped, smiling and folding her hands in her lap. She met Maeve's gaze for a moment, the vacant smile still on her face before she leaned forward slightly. "What are you reading?"

"Goobledegook," Maeve responded promptly, rattling off a rudimentary sentence in the harsh language. "I thought it would be useful to learn so I've started studying on my own." She pushed her carefully guarded notes across the floor the other girl, giving her something to look at in hopes of satisfying her curiosity. The spell she'd cast to disguise the words she had full faith in, her notes perfectly obscured by a Goobledegook facade.

Resisting the urge to pull a face, Felicity gave the parchment a cursory glance. Why anyone would choose to speak a language that sounded like that Fel would never know. "But you're missing dinner!" She protested, handing the notes back, her eyes straying momentarily to the book clutched in Maeve's hands.

"I'm not hungry," Maeve countered, pulling the sheet of parchment over the book in her lap and scribbling a nonsensical note, just something to make it appear as though she was doing what she claimed. "Though if you are that worried do feel free to bring an apple back to the dorm for me. Or maybe an orange," she said lightly, head down.

Making a show of rolling her eyes, Felicity reached out for Maeve's hands. "Come on," she urged the other girl, although she couldn't have cared less if her classmate ate or not, what she really wanted was a look at the book on her lap. There was something going on here that she didn't know about and Felicity didn't like not knowing about things. "You have to eat!"

"I'm fine," Maeve insisted firmly, folding one hand over the other and pinning the parchment to the book. "And I'm quite sure that one missed meal will not be the death of me, but I'm so glad you are concerned." When Felicity still looked like she wasn't going to give up Maeve allowed herself to show some frustration and said, testily, "I'm not coming."

Pursing her lips, Felicity pulled a face. "Fine," she shot back, using the bookshelves to pull herself up. "That'll teach me to try being a nice person," she sneered, dusting herself off. "Have fun with your books." Felicity nastily emphasised the last word, leaving unsaid that books were all Maeve was going to ever have.

She pushed her way past Maeve and rounded the corner, her curiosity not letting her leave the library yet. There was no way that book had been just a stupid language text. Moving on instinct, she grabbed the edge of the stack and swung herself around, summoning the book out of Maeve's lap and ducking back.

Maeve cursed quietly when Felicity summoned her book and scrabbled to her feet, jerking her wand out of her pocket as she chased the other girl around to the other side of the stack. She thrust her wand forward as soon as the other girl was in sight and silently disarmed her, hesitating only long enough to be sure the wand how been knocked out of her hand before she summoned her book back. Glancing over the book once or twice she held her wand out at Felicity and shot her a fierce glare.

Yelping at the unexpected retaliation, Felicity glanced around for her wand, glaring back at her classmate. She noticed that Maeve was able to wandlessly cast spells as well and if she hadn't been so aggrieved by the assault, she would've liked to know more.

As it was, she'd gotten enough of a glimpse of the book to know it was about wizarding genealogy and that intrigued her. There was no reason for a Slytherin to be skulking around the library looking up family histories. Unless...

Narrowing her eyes, Felicity waved her hand in the air dismissively. "Whatever," she shot at the girl. "You're so boring, skipping dinner to read about language." She rolled her eyes and shouldered her bag. "I thought maybe you'd finally done something of interest."

"Nope, just my usual boring self," Maeve sneered, not lowering her wand. The way she saw it, Felicity could only have had the chance to look at the book for a few precious seconds before she had it back, but she didn't know if that was long enough to put two and two together. But the other girl acted convincingly enough like she hadn't seen it. She had lived with Felicity for five years now and knew first hand how brilliant of an actress the girl could be when needed.

"It's research," she said, lowering her wand as she watched Felicity try to leave. "You know the Carrows will be pleased with any student that turns in mudbloods, I was trying to look up a few," she folded her arms petulantly, doing her best to look dismayed at the prospect of sharing her master plan with someone else.

Spotting her wand, Felicity took a few steps back, bending and snatching it up, resisting the urge to keep her eyes trained on Maeve. She slipped her wand back into its pocket, playing cool.

"The Carrows want you to research Gobbledegook?" She asked, dubiously, arching an eyebrow at her dormmate. She wasn't entirely sure what Maeve had been doing here, but she didn't buy the story she was being fed for one moment.

As far as Maeve could tell in the situation it was best to assume Felicity had seen what the book really was and to work with that. "Here," she handed her the genealogy book, her wand still loosely in her hand and down at her side. "It would be well worth the boost," she said with a shrug. Felicity, if anyone, knew she was determined to top their year and eventually the school and that she would do anything to give her an advantage. She just had to rely on the reputation she'd carefully cultivated.

As suspicious as she was, Felicity was also intrigued. If Maeve was truly researching for the Carrows, it was a good, sneaky idea, but there was no reason for her to have hidden it like she had. She felt certain there was something else going on, but couldn't quite put her finger on what. "Why'd you hide your book if that's all it is?" She asked, flipping through it idly.

"You would want others in on it if you were me?" Maeve asked back, shrugging lightly. There were only so many muggleborns left unknown in the school, why share the plans. "I assumed," she said, her voice patronisingly sarcastic, "that as soon as you saw what I was looking at you'd work out the same clever plan."

"Silly Maeve," Felicity responded, handing the book back, her voice sickeningly sweet. "You should know that you shouldn't try to hide things from me." She readjusted the strap of her bag and brushed imaginary dust off her skirt. "I find everything out eventually." She looked up and smiled at the other girl, the expression not reaching her eyes, certain her meaning was getting through.

Ready with a comeback, Maeve interrupted herself when Felicity looked up at her with that smile. The words would have been innocuous to her before that look sent a bolt of dread down her spine, rooting her to her spot. But she could feel Felicity's gaze on her and she cursed herself for faltering. "You don't think I know that, Felicity?" She said with a covetous smile.

Twitching an eyebrow, Felicity patted her hair and looked Maeve over. "Just don't want you to forget," she responded, neither her tone of voice nor the stare she was fixing on the other girl changing.

She held Maeve's gaze for another moment before curving her lips into another smile. "I've got other obligations to attend to," she informed her, turning to leave. "I'll see you later."
