Who: Teagan Moran & Jae Troy
Where: 6th April, 1998
Where: Their Flat!
What: Jae comes home late one night, mind on Gringotts, before Teagan shows up and forces him to consider a whole new set of problems.
Rating: PG-13

Ten hour workdays were not uncommon in Troy's life. They were the norm rather than the exception because of the recent turnover at Gringotts. And now with the vault break-in? Well, it was lucky that they even let him go home occasionally. Gringotts might have not been open that day, but there was so much to do to get security back on track and the bank running smoothly. If that hadn't been stressful enough, the interrogation that everyone had been put through had been absolutely horrible.

It was doubly horrible for Muggleborns, for each of them had been accused of criminal acts in connection to the vault theft. Luckily, with no proof whatsoever, no arrests had been made from the staff. Yet.

By the time Jae got home that night, it was late and his roommates were supposedly asleep. He saw that someone had left some dinner out for him when he walked into the kitchen and he smiled gratefully. Jae hadn't been looking forward to digging into the fridge for leftovers and now he wouldn't have to. Warming up his food with a wave of his wand, he dumped his work satchel on the kitchen table before sitting down in front of his food to tuck in.

As he ate, he felt some of his sore muscles starting to relax now that he wasn't in his cubicle, hunched over paperwork while worrying about whether or not he would be arrested because of his blood background.

It wasn't long before he was finished. Standing to wash the dishes the Muggle way, his mind further wandered back to work. He would need to owl Leigh and talk over about whether it would be better or not for some of the band to house their accounts elsewhere. Gringotts was becoming quite a bit unfriendly toward Muggleborns, even if they were good customers.

And the Weasleys. Now that he had been in country for awhile, he knew that the Weasleys were a key figure in this political battle in England. He would have to owl them and see to maybe getting them to move their accounts. Because he didn't see himself sticking around Gringotts for much longer and he rather not lose his two biggest clients.

Finishing with the dishes, he moved to pick up his satchel and head to his room.

It had been impossible for Teagan to fall asleep. After a morning filled with lectures and long-winded speeches about appropriate behavior and creating a role-model type image for the Bats, Teagan had been left with one of the most monumental headaches she'd ever had. Her brain ached, it felt like. Although itching to just complain about it, Teagan had mostly kept her feelings to herself. Jae had made a point in her journal - she shouldn't be mouthing off in a public forum.

She couldn't lose her spot on the team. She wouldn't know what to do without Quidditch. With the way things were going, she was sure it wouldn't be easy to find a different team to pick her up, either.

As she heard the front door open, a small tingle hit her stomach. She knew Maggie had gone to bed much earlier so the elimination process let her know that Jae was finally home. Pulling her covers off, Teagan slid out of her bed before pulling her robe from off the edge of her headboard. If she couldn't sleep, at least she could force Jae into keeping her company.

Wrapping the tie of the silk robe loosely around her waist, she shuffled out toward the kitchen. Her eyes settled on Jae as he was washing the dishes.

"You are the only wizard I know who'd rather do things the Muggle way," she commented with a small smirk tugging at her lips. She leaned her body slightly against the wall, her arms crossed over her chest.

Jae hadn't heard Teagan opening her bedroom door or her making her way out to the kitchen until she spoke. It startled him out of reaching for his bag, before he turned his gaze on her. "It's relaxing," he said in defense of his behaviour. "I thought you were asleep." He almost sounded accusing at that moment, but only because she had sneaked up on him whatever her intention.

Again, he made a move to pick up his satchel, this time his hand steady as he grabbed the strap and moved to pull it onto his shoulder. "It's late. Why aren't you asleep?"

His gaze briefly settled on a patch of bare shoulder her robe was revealing, before moving to settle on her face. He didn't even realize he had done it or that he had been staring at Teagan a little longer than usual these past few weeks. Why would he? It was just Teagan.

And he liked men, when he wasn't off being asexual.

A slow, small breath escaped from Teagan's lips as she eyed Jae.

"I can't," she told him before raking a hand through her strawberry blond locks. A tendril of bang fell across her eyes and with a slight huff, she blew it out of her face. It only managed to fall back again and she brushed it away with her hand.

"I'm having these wicked guilt thoughts. It's giving me a migraine."

At that, she rubbed at her temples.

"How was the bank today?"

When it was obvious that she wasn't going right back to bed, he gave the barest hint of a nod and slipped past her to head into the living room. If they were going to talk, he was going to park his arse on the couch first and get comfortable.

"Terrible," he said shortly, giving an annoyed snort. "I'm getting ready to quit. It's impossible to work there without someone accusing someone else of un-Wizardly behaviour." The only thing stopping him was, well.

Where else was he going to work? What else could he do? Quidditch was just a hobby.

"But I don't want to talk about that. What are these guilty thoughts you're having?" He inched over on the sofa to give her enough room to join him there.

Her eyes followed him as he walked into the living room. Truth be told, the last thing Teagan knew much about were politics. She wasn't much for reading the Prophet and she hardly ever listened to the WWN. She spent so much of her time with the team, practicing and playing, she hardly gave herself much time to do anything else. Granted, there were those nights dedicated to team bonding (heavy drinking) but those were special occasions.

She let her arms drop at her sides as she followed him inside the room. She thought briefly to ask him what he thought about all that was going on these days. She'd had a few thoughts of her own, and surely heard enough crap from her father that morning but she was curious to see how Jae was reacting to it.

"I never thought I'd see the day you'd think about leaving Gringotts," she mused as she settled in quite comfortably next to Jae. She snuggled in to the corner and rested her elbow on the side arm before looking back toward him. A small shrug filled the time as she thought of how best to word how she felt-

"Quidditch is the only thing I'm good at," she said, after a moment. "And I can't risk getting suspended. Not now. The finals are so close."

Jae was glued to the Prophet, not for the truth of their stories, but for the announcements of new decrees. The paper never failed to provide an update on just how unfair and dangerous this new administration at the Ministry of Magic was. And working in Gringotts as he did, there was no way of avoiding the news.

He had a lot to say about the changes happening in this wizarding world, but he wanted to go to sleep sometime tonight and not fall into a raging rant instead.

"I never thought I would either. I like what I do." Which not many accountants for Gringotts could say without being liars. "But it's becoming dangerous." He paused a beat, before saying, "I'm thinking about going back home. They haven't been touched by this nonsense yet."

It was a big decision, but without a job in England, what else was keeping him here? Nothing. Teagan and Maggie were some of his only friends, but he had survived living away from them before and he would again.

Even if he was getting rather comfortable here. It was nice to not come home to an empty flat and leftovers every night.

Jae leaned his head back against the couch and lolled it to the side, so that he was looking at her. "Just come home instead of going out for the next few weeks and it'll work out.

She stared at Jae for a moment as she thought over the situation. In a worst case scenario, Teagan will still manage, she figured. Her parents both came from good Wizarding families, even though her bloodline wasn't exactly pure. But as she thought about Jae and about Maggie, she knew that she had no way of understanding just how difficult this was for them. She frowned at the idea of Jae leaving, even though she knew she couldn't argue his logic. It was getting dangerous.

"I want you to do what you think is best for you," she said, before a slight sigh escaped from her lips. "What's going on is madness-"

She tucked her hair behind her ears as she tried to manage a smile.

"It sounds easy enough, doesn't it?" she thought aloud. "You've got the right idea, though. I'm on thin enough ice as it is these days. Just because I'm the best doesn't mean they're not going to follow through."

He waved the manner of whether or not he was leaving England yet aside. A few more days, he thought to himself. A few more days and then he would decide.

"I would say the best, exactly," Jae teased, because she was the one that was suppose to be too sure of herself and comforting. Not him. He reached over with a hand to shove at her shoulder. "I flew circles around you at the last Cup, if I do recall correctly. And if you get kicked off now, I'm not going to be able to do it again."

He reached up to undo his tie, which until now, had held itself in a firm knot. He was home, he had eaten, and he was finally starting to let the drag of the day flow past him and relax.

Wiggling his toes inside his socks, he added, "I would have thought you'd be able to hold your liquor, anyway. What happened there, Teagan?"

Her eyes widened slightly. If she recalled correctly, he might have actually been a bit of a better flyer- though she would never admit such a thing. Each of the three of them had their own strengths - it was what made the infamous trio so good at what they did. They played off each other spectacularly. Of course, she pouted slightly as she pointed her finger at him.

"I'm not so sure it was circles but your bonkers strategies that had you flying all over the place," she teased back, a small glint to her eyes. She shook her head as she recalled the night that got her into trouble.

"I usually do," she told him, rolling her eyes in spite of herself. "Dunno, really. Got a bit too rambunctious for my own good, apparently. Which isn't much different than any other night- I just didn't think pictures would be popping up all over tabloids."

Hobby or not, it seemed like all Quidditch players had egos when it came to their skills. Whether or not he was actually better than her was obviously debatable, but he scoffed anyway and batted her finger away. "We won the Cup, didn't we?" He asked rhetorically, the day in question clear in his mind as if it had been that very day. It had been a thrilling game and even though Krum had caught the Snitch, the Irish team had been glorious in their victory, having won the game in Quaffle points alone.

It was true. They played well together and were an unstoppable trio.

He just hoped that the upcoming Cup wouldn't be canceled because of all the politics in play.

"What did you expect. You're a good looking Quidditch player making a fool of herself in public. They were probably hoping for pictures with your top off." He paused for a second, before eying her. "There aren't topless pictures of you in tabloids, are there?"

The very notion that the World Cup would be canceled due to the goings on within the Wizarding world had yet to hit Teagan. She did her very best to surround herself with this impenetrable bubble and such things found it impossible to get through. The negative things, usually. She scrunched her face at Jae before shrugging her shoulders nonchalantly, as if the Cup win wasn't the most important moment in her career, her life.

"Thanks on the good looking part, no thanks on the fool," she told him, making a slight face. She knew well enough that he was right. Although she wasn't exactly as alright with her looks as she let on, she knew how people reacted to her pretty well.

She bit down on her lip before thinking of the proper response.

"I wouldn't say they're in the tabloids."

Jae had grown up as a practical and realistic sort of bloke. His mother had raised him not to expect anything (in ways that had nothing to do with how his father wasn't all that much in their lives) or to expect things to be happiness and sunshine all the time.

Because that was bloody well wasn't going to happen, was it?

He had his share of good luck, but he wouldn't have been surprised if he woke up tomorrow morning and found out that the Cup was officially canceled. Though he definitely didn't plan to bring that up now.

Raising an eyebrow, he asked, "Do I want to know?"

Teagan considered telling Jae of the time that the Bats had a particularly thrilling victory over Falmouth (she couldn't remember now if it was last year or the one prior) and proceeded to celebrate with such inclusions as a fully functional bar tap and a hot tub. So, maybe, things escalated. And perhaps a game of strip Exploding Snap was involved. It was all in good fun.

She took one look at Jae, and that perfectly expected raised eyebrow and she gave a little shrug.

"Probably not," she told him, a wicked grin tugging at her lips. "Best to leave certain things to the imagination. Oi- wait, you owe me something."

"Like I'd be imagining that," he murmured quietly under his breath, rolling his eyes. Except, he briefly had a few weeks ago after that particularly awkward conversation with Teagan through the journals. If he hadn't known any better, he would have said that they had been flirting.

But since he knew better, he could safely say that this was clearly impossible.

"What can I possibly owe you?" He questioned in genuine surprise, not quite remembering what he had promised her.

Perhaps it was due to the sheer flirtatious nature of Teagan's personality, or because of how often she found herself in flirtatious situations, the conversation she'd had with Jae wasn't awkward to her. She had always wondered about Jae and his... well, who he was or was no interested in. She never thought she would come across that field of thought, however.

She feigned a look of pain as she rubbed at her back left shoulder.

"Oh, I've just got this terrible pull in my back," she whined, looking up at him with puppy dog eyes. "And I'm just achy all over."

Maybe it was because, before, they had only used to see each other at Quidditch practice and the odd event that she and Mags managed to drag him out to eat, but it was quickly becoming evident that Teagan was...very friendly. Affectionate. Sometimes, uncomfortably so.

But he thought himself immune to her womanly ways, mainly because he preferred his own gender to hers.

At least, he had thought he had, up until she did that thing with her eyes. A slightly choked cough, born both of her actions and of what she was asking him for, escaped him.

It took him less than a second to compose himself though. Snorting, he placed his feet in her lap and wiggled his sock clad toes. "Not happening, Moran. I was the one at work all day. Not you." A slight flush was starting to work its way up from the collar of his neck.

This was clearly not the response she had hoped for. She had been prepared for Jae to fall prey to that look on her face and start working on that kink in between her shoulder blades. However, as Jae dropped his legs in her lap, she looked down at them as if she had never see something of the sort in all her life.

"Are you saying-"

She pursed her lips, as she looked back toward him.

"You're a sneak," she teased, before her hands clasped around one of his feet. She began to massage at the middle of his foot. "And this means you owe me."

Jae smirked at her, before leaning back comfortably against the arm of the sofa he was now against. He spread his right arm across the back of the couch, while his left one hung off it. "You have fun trying to collect on that," he told her, as he sighed happily.

He had been feeling achy all over, but this was releasing all the tension that he had been holding inside of him. He could push the thought of Gringotts and everything that was going wrong in life, away from his mind.

"Hey, if you ever do get sacked, you could become a masseuse," he joked, as he closed his eyes and let his head fall back.

She worked at the muscles in his foot as she furrowed her brows in his direction. "I'm so glad I've got something to fall back on," she mused before throwing him a teasing glance and pinching the bottom of his foot.

He may have gotten her to give him a massage, but she still held all the power.

"What about you? What would you be doing right now if it weren't for the bank?"

He took the foot she didn't have a grip on and nudged her with it in reaction to the pinch. "If I wasn't with the bank?" Pausing momentarily, as if he was giving the question a lot of thought. "I'd probably be bumming off you, asking you for footrubs all day."

Jae might not have been the most comical guy, but he knew how to deflect well enough. Because as much as he liked to think he had a clue...he didn't. He had no idea what he would be, what he would do, if he wasn't with the bank.

And honestly? That was bad, if he was considering leaving his current job.

He leaned back, closing his eyes again. "I could get used to this."

"Now where would I possibly be able to find the time to give you massages all day when I'd have to work nearly double in order to pick up your side of the rent, you lazy bugger," she teased again, a smile widening as she spoke.

She switched to his other foot as she stole a glance back at him.

"What about Quidditch?" she asked. "Why not make a job out of it?"

She could never understand that someone as good as Jae would want something else entirely as his way of making a living. He could be a top player, easy, if he tried. She never had a head for numbers or any sort of job that required her to be behind a desk. It was hard for her to think of anyone wanting a job like that.

"Hey, you managed the rent by yourself all this time. Pretend I never moved in and it will just be like old times." If only things had worked out that way. If he had been able to stay at the bank in Ireland, he would have never come to England and consider giving up his job. Yes, he had the bonus of living in something that wasn't a shoebox like his old flat and living with Teagan wasn't bad at all, but losing his job because of bigotry and fear?

Yeah, even the bonuses weren't worth that.

"I never saw Quidditch as a career choice," he said with a shrug. "Honestly, I don't find it half as thrilling as some of you guys." It had been his way of proving that he was, simply, good at everything. Intelligent and athletic. Those were the things that got you noticed at a school like Beauxbatons and he had always vied to be the best.

It was an annoying quirk of his, to say the least.

"One real game ever four years is fine with me."

Quidditch was quite possibly the most important thing in Teagan's life. Aside from her family, which she had to care about, and the few good friends she managed to keep over the years, Quidditch was the only real passion she had. There was just something about it that made her feel her happiest. There were moments her father's critiques could stir at her, but even still, she knew she was doing what she was good at.

It was hard for her to comprehend that someone else couldn't feel the same way about it.

"Well, then I suppose that is out of the question then," she said, leaning her head back against the couch. "Maggie is still thinking about going in for that stupid registration. You're not- are you?"

"If I stay at Gringotts much longer, I'm going to have to. I won't have any choice," he explained, pulling his legs away from her and sitting up properly again. "I'm going to talk to Mags about it too, but if I end up sticking around, too many people at work know that I'm Muggleborn. It'd be a stupid risk to take by not reporting it."

Which was stupid, having to register his Muggleborn status, but what choice did he really have? He was surprised that no one was knocking his door down already for not registering. Jae supposed that the wrong ears hadn't heard yet.

"But hey, don't worry about it," he said, smiling at her. "It's not your concern. I'll figure it out."
