Who: Fred and Verity
What: Talking
Where: Hogsmeade WWW
When: Yesterday
Rating/Warning: TBA, but big news

Every time Fred had gone into the shop the last few weeks, Midge had told him that Verity wasn't feeling well, or was out, or something or other and he was beginning to think that Madge or whatever her name was was lying. To him. And technically, he paid her, so that really wasn't fair at all. He knew that she'd have to be there if Midge was away, though, so he'd busied himself figuring out just who the girl was engaged too, and a well placed and confusing emergency owl from her 'fiancee' later, she'd left the shop early. Fred snorted a little about gullible Hufflepuffs, and watched through the window to be sure Verity was working, then came in.

"There you are!" He said, and his eyes tried to look over what he could see above the counter. He didn't notice any swelling... Maybe Hestia had it wrong. He'd been trying to convince himself since he told her that Hestia had had it very, very wrong.

"Who..." she started, then stopped, emotions choking her. "Who... why would you..." She had no idea how to even finish that sentence, and to her horror, she felt tears pricking at her eyes. She hadn't been ready to tell him and she tried to steel herself for his reaction, to turn her fear into anger. "I'll take care of it," she finally managed, wiping furiously at her eyes.

Fred's eyes went wide. "Who what? Who told me? Because it's true? Oh fucking Merlin, it is true?" He looked just as shocked as she had, but then what she'd said last snapped him out of it.

"Take care of it? What do you mean by that?"

Fred's reaction was slightly less vocal than she'd expected and she pushed off the counter, slipping past him. "I mean, I'll take care of it," she shot back, crossing the store and locking the door, glad that they were alone. No one else needed to hear this. "I'll get rid of it, you don't need to worry. I've made an appointment." That last bit wasn't strictly true. She'd thought about making an appointment, but had kept pushing it off, not wanting to make any sort of commitment.

Fred was still in shock, really, but he was nothing if not quick, and he worked out what she was talking about, jumping back a few inches and looking, honestly, torn between hurt and furious. "You sodding well will not!"

Brow furrowed, Verity took a step back and staring at him. "Why the bloody hell not?" She asked, genuinely shocked at his reaction. It was the last thing she'd thought he'd say. "You don't want kids. We're not ready for this." She shot back at him, unable to blink the tears away and swiping at them as they fell.

Then his words struck her and she took another step back, holding out her hand. "Hang about." she said, staring at him, anger bubbling up. "I won't? Because last time I checked it was my decision and my decision alone." She snorted and crossed her arms over her chest. "Although apparently telling you about it wasn't my decision. Why the hell did Ang think it was a good idea to break my confidence like that?"

"My giant sodding arse it's just your decision!" Angry wasn't something Fred did all that often, but it was definitely there now - Weasley temper - And his voice was loud and angry and, at the same time, a little hurt. Surprised, and hurt, and still really sodding confused. But he didn't seem confused when he spoke next. "That's our baby." Which, when he thought about it, might have gone without saying.

Verity sucked in a great, wobbly breath. "It's my body," she shot back, jamming her hands on her hips. "You can just walk away, you don't have to deal with this." She didn't know why Fred was reacting like this. He didn't want children, never mind the fact that his mother would slaughter him when she found out that Verity was pregnant out of wedlock, which meant... oh Merlin. Verity gasped, inwardly, pressing her hands to her mouth in shock. This conversation couldn't possibly go that route... could it?

"Verity!" He didn't mean to yell, he really didn't, particularly not when she looked so shocked and fragile and wobbly and all, but she was being a sodding idiot about it too, he was pretty certain, and also this conversation was making his stomach hurt.

"Deal with it? Of course I'll deal with it. You think I'd just - " But then his mouth snapped shut, and he blinked at her, and the look darkened a little, his voice lowering to a slower, quieter tone that was probably a lot worse than the yelling. "You do, don't you? You think I'd just walk away and let you worry about it on your own? Do you bloody well know me at all?"

"No," Verity shook her head and, she couldn't help it, she was crying, little gaspy sobs that she tried to keep inside but couldn't. "No, but you didn't want me in the first place and I practically forced myself on you and now there's this and you don't have to." Her voice was coming out desperate and slightly hysterical now. "I won't make you. I promise."

Fred just blinked at her, and beyond the tears - which he really was shit at dealing with - he didn't know what the hell she was saying, either. He took a few tentative steps toward her though, enough to reach for her and sort of carefully tug her in against him. The fight was out of him at least, for now.

"You didn't force yourself on me, and you sodding well can't force.... Look, it's just a surprise is all." A huge, life changing, coma inducing sort of surprise.

Going towards him willingly, Verity tucked herself close, clinging to his shirt and sobbing in earnest. She hated crying, hated this huge scary feeling that everything was out of control, that she might float away from herself. The scratchy feel of Fred's shirt grounded her at least a little and she gripped him tightly. "You didn't want me," she repeated. "Now you're stuck and I didn't mean to," she laughed, a little desperately. She didn't mean to. As though she could've possibly done this by herself and it was entirely her fault.

"Don't be stupid," Fred answered, stroking her hair, and it sounded much softer than it might have if he wasn't so bloody ... well, confused, sure, but there was something else. He didn't know what it was. Terror, maybe, but fondness, too. "Who wouldn't want you? And I'm not stuck. You know me. I can get out of anything." That sounded all wrong though, and he cleared his throat. "But I won't, you know. I mean, sure, we did this the wrong way around or whatnot. But I always do anything the wrong side up anyway."

Verity let out another little laugh, pressing her face against his shirt. She knew Fred enough to know that many things he said came out wrong, and despite the initial burst of upset at his claim, she managed not to say anything about him getting out of this. "Wrong way round?" She echoed, confused, still not sure if she was ready for this despite Fred's apparent willingness to become a father.

"Well, I cock up everything I try, yeah? I try to. 'S what makes it interesting, turning things around and looking t them wrong." He shrugged, then kissed her forehead. "We'll figure it out." But first, he'd have a good drink. Or ten. Right?
