It was an extraordinarily gorgeous day even for fake New New York. The Master and Doctor had taken over a corner of Central Park to try to gather together cricket teams, from visitors or natives, whoever knew or was willing to learn the basic rules and play. Captaining opposing teams, of course. The easy banter back and forth indicated high, good spirits.

"No," Jack said shortly. "Because it's not going to happen."

No matter what John had planned.

Long time in the future, then, obviously. "I'm not gonna let my team die."

"Sometimes you don't have a choice sweetheart. No one at Torchwood ever die on you then?"

"I've been there over a century," he said flatly. "People die."

A lot. Rarely of old age.

Jack regarded him steadily. "Do yourself a favor. Don't come back to Cardiff."

He raised a eyebrow, and met his gaze just as steadily. "I've made my peace with my Jack, sweetheart. Did no one tell you how this place works?"

"However the hell it wants to." Considering that it had been different every time he'd arrived. "And I want you the hell away from my people."

"Your people, huh? They have any say in that? Can't see the brunette, what's her name? Ah, yes, Gwen. The fiesty law lady. Can't see her going for that type of talk."

He sniffed, and rolled his head on his shoulders. "Anyway, who says I'm from your timeline? Gonna' forget all this when we go back, so, y'know.. fancy a fuck?"

Gwen. His heart tightened at the thought at Gwen, killed in Torchwood's service. More likely than not, but he'd do his damnedest to protect them all. "You stay away from Gwen."

On second thoughts, she'd probably shoot John herself, after that first meeting.

"Aww.. see *now* I'm wishing I stayed real close. She's got some real.. spunk, that one. Anyway, you didn't answer my question," he pouted.

Spunk. Yeah, maybe that was one way to describe her. Somehow, Jack didn't suspect that John came anywhere near to guessing her true worth. "You don't play cricket, do you?"

"Both. Either."

Didn't matter. John didn't.

John narrowed his eyes. "I don't, no. You getting that stick out of your arse anytime soon? I made *my* peace, remember? When *are* you from, huh?"

Jack simply let his grin get wider.

He didn't moon. He sure as hell appreciated.

"You?" Along with about a million other people, through the years. Very few of them meant it. "You meant physically."
