Take my life, Take my Wife, Drink until I cannot stand (Jesse Custer)
It had not been a good day for the former pilot of the Firefly class ship called Serenity. Still dressed in his ruined pilot garb he'd been wearing for two days now Wash wandered the streets of The City or as Wash colloquially referred to it as the life sucking, wife stealing settlement from hell! seeking out a place with enough alcohol to knock a whole field of cows unconscious.

When he did find said establishment (suspiciously close to the apartment), he settled himself on a stool and proceeded to drink until turning his head became a major stability issue. Still finding himself paining from losing the love of his life he decided more emotional lubricant was necessary. The bartender seemed wary to provide and Wash had already worked through the stipend the life sucking, wife stealing settlement from hell had given him and started a tab under the name, "Washed UP."

"I...was killed yesterday," he slurred to the bartender trying to defend his right for furthered drunkeness, "and so I feel I am due a little more, don't you think? If you died I would give you all the drinkingness you needed. I would. Because I am a nice person. I am the nicest gorram person you'll ever meet. In your life. OR your death! Most generousest soul in the black. It's true. Here, why don't you have my life? Go on, take my wife! Ha! Take everything! Go on! Take it!! Jus', gimme another, wouldya? Hm. My shirt has a hole in it," he muttered, fingering the ripped middle. "Take my shirt! Haha!"

"It ain't my fault!" Jesse wasn't thinking about anything anymore, certainly not about sparing Wash. He took the hits that were swung at him, and they just worked to lessen his sympathy. Though that would surely return soon after this brawl was over. Jesse'd probably even feel really bad for what he'd done once everything was through.

"And I don't know what the fuck yer sayin to me!" He hated when people spoke in languages other than English. Zoe did it every once in a while, but she'd largely quit. At least around him.

He countered Wash's fairly well connected punches with his own. He thought that if Wash hadn't been quite so drunk, that there would have been a better aiming of his hits, and this fight wouldn't have been quite so unfair. Still unfair, but not as much. Despite the drink, Wash was hitting solidly, and making contact, just probably not where he was intending to.

Jesse mainly tried for body shots, still not wanting to do a lot of damage. But he did let one fly in Wash's mouth's general area, mostly to shut him up.

Wash reeled from the punch to the mouth. It had actually connected with the corner of his mouth and cheek. It still left a wicked split lip and he spit out blood from his teeth having cut into the flesh on the inside of his mouth.

He rammed into Jesse again, not being in the right mind enough to see people scatter around them as chairs and tables shoved and knocked over.

"She was MY WIFE! I come here and she AIN'T! How else is there to lookin at that when she's with YOU! I LOVE HER!" he yelled, emotional tears in his eyes.

"Come here and don't even have a chance to FIGHT for her!"

With each point he made he pummeled his fists, hands, and nails into the man in front of him.

"I didn't even have a chance," he whimpered, sedating a little. His voice was strained and cracked from yelling. "Ain't right."

Jesse hadn't been in a serious fight in a long while. He was now recalling how much fun they were not. Fighting when there was nothing behind it was a good time. He liked a good random brawl. Bar fights that quickly turned into the chaos of strangers throwing punches at each other, a good drunken boxing match over a perceived slight or spilled drink. All of these things were fine. Fighting with a man who believed you'd done him serious harm was another thing entirely.

Jesse was not enjoying himself one bit.

"She has never stopped loving you!" Jesse spit back, dodging one blow but ending up with another landing more soundly because of it. Wash's inebriation made it hard to predict what he was going to do, or where his fists were going to land in relation to where the other man likely thought he was throwing them.

The Southern boy matched blow for blow, not wanting to walk out of this with more bruises than the pilot. If there was anything that he did not like more than this fight it was the idea of losing this fight. There was the matter of pride. An idiot idea that in knowing Wash wasn't a fighter, Wash should not win here. An even more moronic spark in his brain that told him that because of who he'd grown up with, he should be the one standing at the end of this, no matter what.

"Yer fightin now, ya jackass." Jesse gave a quick but strong push, hoping to force Wash to back off.

"It ain't like she got here and just jumped on the first man she saw, Wash." Jesse wiped the blood from a cut under his eye. "She waited for ya for years. Years. She even got you a couplea times. Had ya fer real brief moments. But she kept losin you."

He was now aware that the other patrons had scattered and the bartender was vanished. But he didn't take his eyes off of the emotionally wounded man in front of him. That would have been a dangerous mistake.

"It ain't even like we just met one day and that was that. We were friends first, Wash. We been friends a while."

Jesse didn't know if this information would make any of this better or worse, but he felt compelled to share it. To let Wash know that none of this was a conspiracy against him. To inform the poor guy that his wife had always loved him.

"You can't say you ain't got a chance. Every possibility that she loves you more'n me, Wash. Yer her heart at the end of it."

He let Jesse push him, stumbling into the bar and falling onto the toppled stools. Tears were still shining on his lashes as he listened to the man, now above him.

"I know," he said softly, rubbing his face messily with his hand. "I don't have anyone else to blame. It's not anyone's fault"

He was annoyed at that fact, that there was no one he could really fight. Nothing he could really accomplish.

He shook his head at Jesse, the world spinning upside down for a time.

"She wouldn't do that. Zoe's faithful. Mush as my pride got away from me, she never strayed. Never even thought. If you two are...together then she ain't gonna go away. It's why she's so special," he said, the fight drained out of him.

"It ain't that I think she'd cheat or nothin." Jesse shook his head, carefully staying back where he was. He didn't know if Wash was truly done, or if his anger would rise up again and there'd be another attack.

"But I only been with her a short time. She's loved you a lot longer. Might be that she decides havin you here means the two of you should be together. I know she's loyal. I know that she's true. But I also know how she feels about you, Wash. I've seen the look in her eye when ya vanished yet again."

Jesse didn't like admitting to it, any of it. But it was the truth. And he'd told Zoe, if she felt like she wanted or needed to be with the man who was her husband, truly felt that way, he'd never stand in the way of it. He wouldn't be happy about it, but he'd step aside.

She had said that it didn't matter if Wash was here or not, but Jesse didn't know if she'd still feel the same when he was walking around again.

He'd have to talk to her again to know for sure.

"If it makes ya feel better, Wash, you can hate me. If it makes it easier, blame me." Jesse meant that sincerely.

Wash listened to the man with dark hair as he spoke things that made sense and even made his pride swell and he smiled faintly leaning his swelling cheek on the leg of a stool with a dreamy look in his eye.

"You think she would, dark haired fellow with pretty eyes?" he asked, lolling his head up. Drunkenness had gotten the better of him, it seemed.

"Nah, I don't blame you, you!" Wash said and shook his hand at him. "I'm not a man of hate, generally. Current inebriation notwithstanding, of course."

"I can't know for sure, can I?" He supposed he could. He could just dip into Zoe's brain and find out what she really felt about Wash being here again. So soon after the last time, too. He doubted she'd really had much time to heal. He could also probably dip in there and make it so she decided to be with her husband and not the cowboy.

But those were things that he wouldn't do.

Jesse felt sure that there would be no further punching between them, so he moved toward his seat again. He even reached down and held out a hand to help Wash up.

"I know ya ain't." He nodded softly. "She told me all about you. I know the kind of man ya are."

He was pretty heavy and floppy to pull up some somehow he managed to be heaved far enough so that he could clutch the bar for stability.

"That so?" Wash replied, eyebrows raised. It looked like he almost wanted to challenge the assumption, but he sighed instead.

He could hardly keep himself upright anymore, grappling with the smooth wood too keep himself from swaying too much toward the floor.

"You looked taller," he said, slurring, "When I didn't like you." It was a non sequitur, but true. They were close to the same height.

"What kind of man are you?" he asked looking through his eyelashes as his lids drooped into his vision.
