Karaoke time! (Lindsey, Lorne)
(Takes place right after this thread)

Lois let Lindsey lead her into Caritas, not quite sure what to expect. Whatever she might have been expecting, the array of colorful, horned demons was not it. She instinctively moved a little bit closer to Lindsey.

"You sure this is the right place?" she said in a low voice.

She was open minded enough that if he said that these people weren't going to eat them for dinner, then she'd trust that for now.

She was also still curious to hear the answer to her question about the owner of this place. She'd heard rumors that people could go in and sing and have their fortunes read, or something along those lines. Of course, the last fortune teller she'd gone to had told her that she was destined to end up with a guy who wore tights and liked to fly. She might have previously joked about waiting for her crossdressing pilot, but after seeing those comics, she had a feeling that that fortune teller hadn't simply been some hack making up a laughable story. Maybe.

"Yep," he answered. His arm hovered just above the small of Lois's back as they descended down the small flight of stairs that led into Caritas.

The place was fairly packed, and Lorne was making his rounds, all smiles, drink in his hand. Lindsey wondered for a second if the guy'd ever tried whiskey. On stage, what could only be described as a Red Shirt from Star-Trek was singing a sad 80's ballad. The front row had lighters out.

The demon saw Lindsey and made his way over, waving.

Lorne didn't know who the girl was, just that she wasn't Zee, and he had a few things to say about that. But not just yet. He smiled brightly and said hello in his best showman's voice, focusing his attention on the girl.

Lois was a huge fan of 80s hair bands, so her eyes were drawn up to the man crooning on stage, if only for a brief moment.

She blinked in surprise at the green demon, but returned his smile. When in Rome, after all.

Lois was good at reading people, and there was definitely something that didn't quite ring true in the greeting, though she couldn't put her finger on it. She didn't take it all that personally, since she'd just met the demon. But she was a little bit wary.

She shot Lindsey a questioning glance and then returned her attention to Lorne, her smile back in place.

"Nice place. I'm Lois Lane, by the way."

Lorne's eye's widened.

He filed away the comment until he could get Lindsey alone, but the kid was really making the rounds with the comic book ladies, wasn't he?

"Oh! I'm a big fan!" His smile widened, too. "What'll you have to drink?"

He turned and gestured to the bartender, shooting Lindsey a slight look when he turned back around.

"And thanks, toots. I do try. It helps people don't try to explode the place nearly as often as they used to."

Lindsey smirked, despite the looks the demon was shooting him. A girl with a tray brought him a T&T, the imported. Lorne always remembered that.

"You are? Of my stories or the comic books?" she asked.

She was a little bit blunt, but she couldn't help but wonder when meeting people. Errol, the bookshop owner, had been a pleasant surprise.

Lindsey was clearly a regular, since his drink order had been filled before it had even been requested.

"I'll take a Jack and Coke," Lois said to the bartender.

"So you're the owner?" she asked Lorne. "Is what they say about you true?"

She was deliberately vague. She found that sometimes people filled in the blanks quite nicely when one didn't ask direct questions to start.

Lorne blinked. Of course she was that clever, but he wasn't really prepared for it.

"I don't know much about comics," he said. "I know a little bit about 'your' comic books, though. Hard to avoid in my world. No more than the average Joe, though."

There were air quotes when he said 'your.'

"But the stories? Sweetie, anyone who'll sass politicians on a daily or weekly basis is golden in my book."

Lindsey chuckled. Lorne must really NOT like him very much. At all. Other than musically.

The bartender slid a drink down the bar, which Lorne caught and handed to the lady.

"I am the owner. And that depends what they say." He smiled. "I hear a lot of things. And you know better than anyone... not all rumors are true."

Lindsey took a drink and just let the two talk. For the moment, there was not much for him to say.

Lois grinned at the compliment from Lorne regarding her articles. The demon might or might not have realized it, but he had just endeared himself to her for that.

She accepted the drink with a nod and a smile.

"Well, the word on the street is that you work some sort of mojo when people sing here. Something about seeing into their futures?" she asked.

She glanced at Lindsey, who was being just a little bit quiet.

"And Lindsey tells me that he's a regular performer here," she said with a small grin directed Lindsey's way.

She was curious to see her lawyer singer. Or she supposed he was her former lawyer, since he'd just saved her a whole lot of time and headache by making that lawsuit go away.

Lorne picked up a Sea Breeze from a tray a waiter walking past held.

"It's not the future. It's just the path," he said. "I'm an empath demon. I can see things, sometimes. But what I see? It doesn't always happen. It can change."

He took a drink.

Lindsey arched an eyebrow. "Back home, yeah," the lawyer said. "Used to come by after work, entertain the masses. Since I've been here, though, just the one time."

"Hey," Lorne said, brightly. "You two kids singing tonight? Or just hanging out?"

The look he shot Lindsey made it seem like Lindsey'd better sing.

Lois nodded. She could get behind seeing a path more than seeing a future that was set in stone.

"Well the last time someone tried to read my future, she told me that I was destined to fall in love with a guy who flew a lot and liked to wear tights." She smirked. "I used to joke that I was just waiting for my crossdressing pilot, but then I ended up here and figured out what that actually meant."

She shrugged, since it was clear that whatever her future held had been circumvented when she'd ended up here. Clark wasn't here after all, and she could only bet that Smallville was back to mooning over Lana now that Lois was no longer around to pester him and keep him on his toes enough that he didn't think about his ex-girlfriend every second.

She considered Lorne's request and then looked at Lindsey, curious to hear his answer.

"Well, I'm game for singing."

Lorne chuckled, not mentioning that it was hard not to associate her with a certain caped individual.

Lindsey caught the look the demon'd given him, and he nodded. He'd always be willing to sing, and had the feeling that was the price of admission if he was going to show up here with various super heroes, or their girlfriends. He didn't really need to hear anything Lorne had to say on the topic: he was pretty sure he could guess most of it.

"Fantastic!" Lorne said. He handed Lois one of the books full of song selections, and raised an eyebrow at Lindsey. "You don't happen to have your guitar, do you, cowboy?"

Lindsey shook his head.

"That's okay. I get the feeling we can fix you up with somethin'."

Lorne was pushing at him, just slightly. He wanted to know what had happened with Zee, how Lindsey'd screwed that up. He did not trust Lindsey--he knew too much about him.

"Yeah, I got it," Lindsey said, taking a long gulp of the drink. He managed a very large, very fake but convincing smile. Lois was here to have fun and celebrate. He'd accommodate and maybe threaten Lorne later. "Take it I'm going first?"

"Oh, you betcha, partner," Lorne said.

There was definitely something underneath the exchange between the two, though Lois couldn't quite put her finger on it. Something... personal was going on, she knew that much.

She settled into a chair at the bar and took a sip of her drink before grinning at Lindsey.

"Go right ahead. I'll be listening."

She was already mentally running through her own song selection. It wasn't the same as singing a duet with Chloe at the Talon. Lois felt a little pang as she thought about her cousin. She usually tried not to think about the people from home that she missed, but every once in awhile it was unavoidable.

"Me too," Lorne added. He gave the lawyer a big smile as he walked away to get ready.

Lindsey was going to be somewhat at a loss. His guitar wasn't here, so he'd have to make due with what Caritas had hanging around for patrons to use. He picked the guitar up and started to tune it while a chubby college kid in glasses got up on stage and started to sing a song that Lindsey thought might be a Collective Soul tune if the kid wasn't tone deaf.

Lorne turned his attention to Lois and he smiled again.

"So let's hear it. How come you're hangin' around with Lindsey?" He raised a green finger and decided to augment what he said. "Because honestly? From what I know of you? Way too good for the guy."

Lois raised an eyebrow at Lorne. The two had seemed friendly, so it was interesting to hear the negative assessment of Lindsey from the... demon? Was that the appropriate term here?

She shrugged.

"He got me out of a tight spot legally. And he seems nice enough. I suppose there's dirt that I should know?"

She was ever the reporter so of course she had questions.

Lorne grinned.

"Oh, sister."

Back by the stage, Lindsey was messing around with the guitar, and Lorne thought he could hear the opening strains of a song that he could not help but smirk at. If he was correct--and he usually was when it came to music--this was really appropriate.

"Off the record," he began, making sure he was looking her in the eyes when he said it, "I'm not entirely sure if he's the hero or the villain, and I never have been. Back home, he worked for a firm we used to call Evil Inc. And it wasn't a joke. The senior partners? They were demons of the kind that make Bible-thumpers feel justified with their concepts of Hell. I actually really like Lindsey," he said, eyes wandering over to the lawyer.

Then they wandered back to Lois.

"... what I don't like? There's a guy I really respect and liked working with. So what if he was a vampire? He was a good guy, the real deal. A champion and a hero. Capital H. Lindsey made it a mission to be this guy's enemy. From what I can tell? Out of pride, and something to do with a girl." Lorne shook his head.

"You're a smart girl. I know you are. And I know you'll be careful. But what I know of the guy and the way he woulda ended up if we were back home?" The demon took a drink from the glass in his hand. Then he shook his head, and left it at that.

"And just to be clear, muffin, I'm not saying he can't turn over a new leaf. I just don't know that he has."

Lindsey nodded, and raised a hand, and tucked his hair behind his ear, walking up to the microphone.

"Lorne tells me I gotta sing," he said into the mic, sort of gruff and muffled. "I know better'an to say no."

He gave the demon and the reporter a wink and a smirk and began to play. The opening chords were familiar, and would be to almost everyone in the club. And he made it look easy, the frets of the thing seeming to bend to his will. Lindsey was just a little sad he didn't have the added bonus of some special effects, like the real version had. He could do with a rattlesnake rattle about now. When he sang, the range was different than the original version, but it sounded perfect. And there was just a little bit of his midwestern twang.

"It's all the same,
Only the names will change.
Everyday, it seems we're wasting away.
Another place
Where the faces are so cold,
I drive all night just to get back home.
I'm a cowboy,
On a steel horse I ride,
I'm wanted, dead or alive.
Wanted, dead or alive...."

Lorne focused. He wanted to make sure his reading was as clear as possible.

Lois silently absorbed the information about Lindsey-yes she could be silent sometimes.

She watched Lorne carefully as Lindsey started to sing, watching the demon's face for some sort of reaction. If he could read people this way, then it might be interesting to get some hint of what he was seeing.

It wasn't that she was considering dating Lindsey or anyone else in the City, but he was one of the few people who had actually gone out of his way to be friendly to her. It just figured-she usually had a knack for attracting the bad boy types.

The interesting thing about Lorne while he was reading was that, unless there was a big red flag, his face remained utterly placid. He might even hum along, or smile, even if he saw something awful. There were exceptions.

Mostly they had to do with people who had an incredibly sad future. Or they had to do with Angel.

Lindsey kept right on singing. He looked right at home, not at all like he made his money through arguing, contracts and paperwork. He looked like he was musician, and that was all he'd ever been. Like it was breathing.

He hadn't chosen the song lightly.

"When I walk these streets
A loaded six string on my back
I play for keeps
...'Cause I might not make it back

I've been everywhere
Still I'm standin' tall
I've seen a million faces
And I've rocked them all..."

Lindsey was vibing pretty strongly, and whether or not Lorne wanted it, he was getting a play-by-play of some of the decisions he'd made, all the way back to the fight at Wolfram and Hart with Angel. The demon was glad that this was not the reality he was from. Everyone working for Wolfram and Hart? He half didn't blame Lindsey.

There's always time for redemption. Isn't that your whole thing?

Who is this? Who is this? I came to fight the vampire with a soul. Guess you shouldn't have sold it, huh? Look at you, from champion to pathetic corporate puppet in just a few months. You used to have fire in your heart. Now all you got in there is that big honkin' sword. How's that feel, champ?

....Worst part was the demon in the basement. Ripped my heart out every time I went down there. And I'd wake up whole, like it never happened. Fake wife, fake kid... they pretended they didn't know. Or maybe they didn't.

There was a sharp image of a tattoo gun, the sound of it, and Zee's face. If Lorne had to guess, Lindsey missed her.

And then there was the path, opened up, just laying there.

Lorne's mouth dropped open, as the song ended.

"You want another one?" Lindsey asked. The small crowd clapped and whistled. "Well, you're gonna hafta wait." He shrugged the guitar off and made his way back to Lorne and Lois, smiling slightly.

Lois raised an eyebrow as Lorne's jaw dropped. She wondered what he might have seen. But before she had the chance to ask, Lindsey returned to them.

She looked between the two men and then stood. Clearly, Lorne needed a word with Lindsey. And as curious as she was, even she knew when people might need a private moment.

"I suppose it's my turn," she said, flashing a grin.

She handed her song selection into the person running the karaoke machine and took the stage.

Lorne might fill her in later, depending. Right now, though, he was more interested in what might be found in HER singing.

As Lindsey moseyed back to Lois and Lorne, the demon gave the reporter a smile and made a shooing motion toward the stage.

Lindsey didn't do anything but give her a smile.

Once Lois was up on stage and Lorne was waiting, Lindsey picked his drink back up and smiled, talking to the demon without looking at him.

"So whadid you tell her?" Lindsey asked.

"Oh, y'know. Usual warnings," Lorne said. "Do you even care what I just saw? And nice rendition, by the way. I normally dislike Bon Jovi, but with the country twang it worked."

"I care," Lindsey said. "Just not sure I really wanna hear it. 'Sides, I'm sure you're gonna tell me."

Lorne really didn't like having to do this.

"Okay," the demon said. He nodded at the bar for another drink, because he wouldn't want to hear this without one, if he were Lindsey. "They're here."

The song choice had been easy. Lois could sing White Snake songs in her sleep. Maybe it wasn't a typical choice for a woman, but Lois wasn't a typical woman. She did have a strong affection for 80s hair bands, and for White Snake in particular.

She did glance over at Lorne and Lindsey as she got up to sing, taking note that it looked like they were in for some sort of heavy conversation. She wondered yet again what Lorne had seen.

Once the opening chords started, Lois grinned and relaxed. She wasn't the most self-conscious of people, so rocking out to White Snake on stage didn't make her too nervous.

"I don't know where I'm goin
But I sure know where I've been
Hanging on the promises in songs of yesterday.
An' I've made up my mind, I ain't wasting no more time
But here I go again, here I go again."

Lorne stopped talking to Lindsey when Lois started singing, just like Lindsey stopped paying attention to Lorne when she started singing.

Lorne was looking for her path. Lindsey was just listening to see what she had in the way of musical ability.

She had a good amount, and Lindsey was smirking watching her. She was having a good time, and it was a fun song.

Lorne's eyebrows drew together, and he kept listening. It was strange to know who she was and not see Clark Kent or Superman somewhere on that path. But this was The City, and right now? Clark Kent wasn't a thing that was in her future. The future of right now was very different.

Lois was definitely having fun. She couldn't sign White Snake without getting into it, after all. Maybe not as much as if she'd been drunk or if she was alone at home, but she still belted the song out like she meant it.

"An' here I go again on my own
Goin' down the only road I've ever known,
Like a drifter I was born to walk alone
Goin' down the only road I've ever known."

As she sang the last few words of the chorus, Lois grinned. She might not have received the hearty reception Lindsey had gotten, but she still received her fair share of applause.

Still grinning, Lois returned to the demon and the lawyer. Her grin faded just a bit as she realized that Lorne might have seen something while she was singing. Knowing that... well, she never could quell her curiosity, even if it might not be good news.

Lorne grinned back at Lois and offered her a hand to high-five.

"You sure you want to be a reporter?" he asked. In Lorne's opinion, the City--and just about everywhere--could do with a little bit more in the way of belted-out hair metal songs.

Lindsey offered her a raised eyebrow, look on his face making it clear that he was both impressed and amused. "Whitesnake, huh? Wouldn't've figured you for a Whitesnake girl."

Lorne kept his mouth shut, but based on both of their readings, he thought it would be safe to say that neither of them had the other figured right.

"I love it when people can sing," Lorne gushed. "I mean, I'll take anything. Any singing. But talent?" He just nodded knowingly.

"Thanks," Lois said to Lorne. She was glad it was dark in the bar, because her cheeks flushed just a little bit at Lorne's praise. She grinned at Lindsey.

"Hey, the comic books didn't get everything right," she said teasingly. "Besides, I'm just full of surprises."

She sat down and took a sip of her drink and looked at Lorne expectantly.

"So what's the verdict? Is there fame and fortune in my future?"

Lindsey chuckled and leaned against the high table where Lorne had sort of stationed their drinks.

So what's the verdict?

Lorne raised his eyebrows at Lindsey, who nodded, made a slightly mocking face at the demon, and walked away to chat with the bartender for a few minutes. With Lindsey gone, Lorne smiled brightly at Lois.

"So how this works, pumpkin, is that I don't see everything. I see things that can set people on a certain path, and I only get some of the picture." The demon shrugged. "Sometimes that's all you need."

He took a big gulp of his Sea Breeze and leaned more toward her. Onstage, a thirty-something guy in a suit was singing an Adele song.

"First let's talk about what I don't see."

He made sure Lois was looking him in the eyes.

"There isn't a guy that likes to run into phone booths and fly. I don't see him anywhere. Now, I don't know how much you know about all that, but I'll bet people here have told you a thing or two. So from what I can see, right now, there's no super hero in your life," he said, face sympathetic, "... and it doesn't look like there will be."

To Lorne, that wasn't at all bad. It meant she got to live her life her way, instead of how a comic book writer thought she should. It meant a different path. Lorne was a big fan of different paths.

"There's not a super hero, but there's a lawyer with questionable morals."

He did not comment on how he felt about that.

"But the issue is there's trouble. With a capital 'T.' And it's coming. And ... it's not going to be fun."

The source of the trouble was fuzzy. Lorne could usually see more than that. And that worried him.

"I don't know what specific kind, and that bugs me. Because usually I DO know those things. Which means one thing, kitten: It's big. It's big and it knows how to hide from guys like me, so that I can't tell you how to avoid it. And I don't like that."

If he had to guess, he'd think someone was not going to like Lois sticking her nose into things, and it was going to bite her. Hard. He knew there were strong, powerful beings here in the City that might do just that--literally. But he knew a thing or two about bad guys, and this felt pretty big.

Lois' heart sank as Lorne explained what he didn't see. All the same, she managed to keep a wry smile in place.

"Well, I've been saying that things aren't exactly like they are in the comics."

From what she'd read in the comics, she had met Clark way too early. If it had been a few years later or if things had simply been different... then maybe he would have been pining over her instead of Lana. She wouldn't admit to anyone that maybe that was something she wanted. Just a little bit.

Seeing what could have been or perhaps what had been in another world had just made things all that much more lonely here.

All the same, Lois wasn't going to let anyone see that. What was the point in moping and letting people see that she was anything but tough as nails? She threw herself into her career, just like she'd been doing back home. It was easier to be that pitbull on someone's pant leg than it was to think about could-have-beens and should-have-beens.

She took a deep breath as Lorne told her about her future and the danger that was there.

"What does the lawyer with questionable morals have to do with any of this? If there's trouble, wouldn't it be better if he didn't get mixed up in it?"

After all, he wasn't a superhero or even a cop. Plus, they'd just met so it wasn't like Lois was going to ask him to put himself in the line of fire for her.

Lindsey chuckled at something the guy behind the bar said, and tilted back his drink. He could see that Lorne was not done yet, so he stayed put.

"Thing is," Lorne said, voice very sympathetic, "I don't always get all the information. On this one, what I see for Lindsey is a whole lot of trouble--with or without you, and he knew it was coming. Sounds to me like it's more his trouble than yours, but I don't see the all the bits of this jigsaw. And personally? I'm kinda glad I don't. I'm not a fighter. I'm an entertainer. I can't even wield a well-pointed word. I'm canon fodder."

Lorne sighed.

"I think you better ask him your questions after I fill him in on what I saw, and go from there. But one thing?" Both eyebrows rose. "I may not like the guy 100%, but if this trouble is what I think it is, he doesn't deserve the nightmare that's coming to him. Nobody does. It's your choice if you get involved. But if you don't? Might not be a bad idea to get him a phone number for someone who can."

Lois took a moment to process this and then nodded.

"I'll let you two talk before I ask my questions. Besides, I've got at least one hero on speed dial if he needs it," she said with a little half-smile.

She moved over toward Lindsey and took the seat next to him.

"Lorne wants to talk to you. I'll just be over here while you get the rundown."

She was a little shaken at the idea of some sort of future trouble, but then again when wasn't she finding herself in life-or-death situations? Lorne's warning was vague enough that it could just be another day at the office for her really. Or perhaps Lois wasn't one to really take danger seriously until it was staring her in the face. The number of tight spots she'd gotten herself in over the years might testify to that.

Lindsey's face held something of a scowl, but he nodded and walked over to Lorne.

The demon took a final drink of his Sea Breeze and sighed.

"Other than impersonating that little girl from Poltergeist, all I can say is that you and Lois? There's a thing there. I can't see what, and I can't see how, but she's going to get involved in this with you. And you are not Superman." He glared. "Do not get her killed."

"When you said 'they,' you mean...."

"Oh come on. You had to have some idea of their reach." Lorne pointed to one of the more visible tattoos. "You knew they could manipulate dimensions. And while I'm not entirely sure we're talking about... what we're talking about... I'm pretty sure. Because when I can't see all the details, something is MAKING it so I can't see the details."

Lindsey's heart stopped. But at least, today, it was in his chest.

"I hope for your sake you've got a lot of tricks up your sleeve and you're really, really going good. Because I cannot and will not stand for you getting their backing, bub."

Now Lindsey glared, and grunted, but he didn't waste his breath. Lorne had a point, and it wasn't his kind of thing to shoot the messenger.

He got up from the table after another minute and went back to Lois, ordering a double first.

He gave her a slightly fake smile, unsure what to say.

Lois raised an eyebrow at Lindsey as he joined her. She didn't miss the tension in the lawyer's face.

"So. You want to tell me what that was all about? Because the way Lorne tells it, whatever is coming down the line means big trouble for both of us."

Lois wasn't the type to turn her back on someone in need, though she wasn't sure if she was equipped for whatever was going on with Lindsey.
