In the aftermath (Elle)
How many days had passed?

Jesse and Elle had ended up back at his apartment, in bed. He'd known that they would. They way that the Cupid thing seemed to infect people led to instant love. Not just lust. Lust was different. Lust, people could control better. Logic could still seep through. But love, you wanted to give yourself over completely.

Mere hours after they'd arrived, spent some time together, the feeling had worn off. There was no longer that love there. But it didn't mean that Jesse had any intention of kicking Elle out. She was pretty, she was sassy. She was a strong woman. And as long as she was into it, it was absolutely no issue for Jesse to continue either.

She was a female, he was a male.

Made all the sense in the world to him.

Of course, he was waiting for her to realize that they weren't in love with each other anymore. He stood in the kitchen, wearing only pants, making coffee. Sooner or later, since she was alone and not being ravaged again and again to keep her mind off of it, her mind was going to get to wandering, and she was going to figure it out.

What would she say then? How would she take it? Blame him? Be embarrassed? Hate herself, hate him, hate them both? Claim she'd wanted no part of it? Of course all the bad things went through his head. He was a preacher. It had been taught into him to think that the world was a dismal place filled with vile things.

Maybe it wouldn't be all that bad.

"Good. Like to hear that." Nothing worse than a woman who ate like a bird in Jesse's opinion. Couldn't ever take her anywhere when they were like that.

"I ain't a picky man when it comes to my food. As long as it's not out to kill me, and I don't get no spontaneous allergy, it's all good."

Just for good measure, Jesse went into the fridge again and pulled out some more ingredients.

"Tell me more 'bout yerself, Elle. We didn't really get a lot of time to get to know each other, did we? I know ya got a power, but that's about it."

Elle kept wisking the eggs until she was satisfied with them, then she added some cheese for good measure. She could make a mean omelet. Yes she could. She put that into a pan and then put some more cheese on it. Some random ham and onions, mushrooms and more cheese. Never enough cheese. She watched it carefully while trying to think of something to say.

"Well there's really not much to my life. If I'm being honest. I was born, got involved in some interesting mishaps. Being that I can manipulate electricity.. I set a few houses on fire and ended up causing some major blackouts and was.. taken into the company for awhile." Elle didn't want to say she was a prisoner. Daddy wouldn't have made her a prisoner. But she missed out on a lot of life and couldn't remember huge parts of her childhood.

"It's just been work work work, where I'm from at least." Elle continued to watch the omelete.

"What about you?"

"The company?" He glanced at her, expecting she'd explain or not on her own decision.

"Well. Lesse. I guess mine's a bit more complicated. My momma spit in my daddy's face cause she was a runaway from home, got caught up in with these activists who were against the war in Nam. He was a soldier, just comin' home. So she spit in his face, called him a baby killer. Then later, she saw him again, and she felt real bad. They got together and stayed together. Had me. By the time I was four, maybe five, the reason my momma ran away caught up with her. Took the three of us back to a place called Angelville." Jesse paused. He thought this might be the first time he'd ever told anybody this story. He didn't even think he'd told Max all of this. "My grandmother weren't a real nice woman. She was real devout. Into God and all this. That's not what made her bad, though. She just had a black heart.

"Had two men who worked for her. Jody and T.C., hard bastards. They were who brought us back. Everything was okay, at first, I guess. I didn't really know what was goin on. Then they killed my daddy. Right in front of me."

Jesse discovered he didn't want to talk about this anymore.

"Long story shorter, I became a preacher in Annville, Texas, became a drunk, got infused at the soul by a thing called Genesis. Came here. Did some stuff."

It wasn't the talking that pissed him off. It was the talking so freely with somebody he hardly knew. He didn't realize just how much he'd been craving company, he supposed. But to spill out so much info like that?

Jesse shook his head.

"It's all borin. Sorry. Didn't mean to ramble on like that."

"The company." She echoed, but she hesitated on telling him, listening to his story instead. She stopped watching the food, she watched him. It was't a good story, by any means, it was very sad. Elle suddenly felt guilty for asking him to talk about himself. He was very honest, she'd just summed everything up it didn't feel right to do so. There were may things locked away in her memories. Things she didn't enjoy, things she did. The company was at the op of both lists really.

"No, you didn't ramble. Sometimes people just want to talk. Need to. I should more ofte, my childhood just wasn't good." Elle returned her eyes to the food, flipped it and made a little egg taco, but it was an omelet. She waited until it was cooked then put it on a plate and turned that burner off.

"The company collected data on people with special abilities for awhile. Super Heroes, is kind of what we were like. But none of us were normal ones. I mean, heres a guy who could fly, a guy who could adopt people's powers, a guy who would steal someone's brain and get their powers. A girl who could fall off a building break evey bone in her body and regenerate.. My daddy works for the company. When I was little he knew I was special becaue he was special. I don't know what happened to mom, no one ever told me. She just wasn't there. I caused a lot of trouble since I was so small I ouldn't control my powers. Lit fires, caused blackouts. Killed people without knowin what I was doing." Elle straightened the shirt a little.

She never talked about this.

"So the company took me in and basically had me in a cell most of my childhood. Apparently they tested me there. Shocked me, let me shock everything around me. Tested to see how much I could take, how far I could go. I don't remember it really. Noah, a guy who worked for my dad, told me daddy would make me do this until I'd pass out, wake me and do it again. I don't remember it. Daddy's never seemed mea to me at least. But he doesn't trust me anyway. He always pulls me off assignments if I end up needing to kill people who know. You see people arent suppose to know. In our world well, we're really really different. And people would get mad or call us freaks and.." Elle shrugged.

"So the company rounds those people up and tries to make us more normal if we get out of hand."

"It's probably better that you don't remember." Jesse shook his head. He finished with the bacon and put it on a plate. Then turned to look at her. It seemed as if her childhood was just as bad as his had been. He'd never found anybody to commiserate with. It was a strange feeling, sharing something terrible like that with somebody, but also somehow... freeing.

"It ain't normal to have abilities in my world neither. Before I came here, I hadn't really met anyone who was like that. I mean, there was Cassidy, but he was just different. He wasn't a human with powers, he was a vampire. I never did see him do much of anything besides being strong. And a drunk like me."

Cassidy. It had felt like a lifetime since he'd even said the name.

Jesse nodded toward the counter with the stools, picking up the plates of food. He figured they'd just share and eat off of each together. Easier that way.

"Sounds like your childhood and my childhood could get together and share stories."

"Are you still a drunk?" She wondered outloud, before setting her plate down on the island and crawling back onto the stool. She settled and offered a fork to him first, so he could try the omelet.

"I want to know what really happened to me though. Daddy hid the files." She shrugged. "As for our childhoods.." Elle looked down a moment, but then brightened herself up. Be cheerful.

Don't be sad.

He's insanely cute and great in bed damnit.

"I like having someone to share something with for once, that isn't just out to.. be free, or eat my brain or whatever Sylar actually does. And shoot me. People always want to shoot me." Elle still didn't know where her gun was.

She smiled at him either way.

"Guess in the strictest terms of the word, yeah, I'm still a drunk. I drink a lot, but I don't really get inebriated anymore. Unless I drink a lot. I got my bad habits, and I can admit them. Drinkin, smokin, women. But I do love them, and I ain't lookin to quit none of them any time soon." He gave her a wink.

Jesse could understand the wanting to know. He'd gone on a rediculous and hard quest to understand a thing, and it had taken him through some really difficult things. He still didn't really have the answer he'd been looking for, either. Though he'd stopped once he'd arrived in the City. He had known from the very start that what he was looking for wasn't here. Hadn't ever been, and never would be.

"That's twice now you've mentioned somebody eatin brains, darlin. I think yer gonna have to explain to me just what you mean. Especially after that zombie thing we had not too long ago. Cause that's all I can think about." He leaned in a bit and took the fork, nudging her softly with his shoulder. "I won't never shoot you."

Women. Elle tried not to be jealous of that, but there was the slightest prickle of it at her neck. Why she couldn't explain. She didn't own Jesse, not by any means, but she knew a lot about him, at least, she knew more than she did when she'd first met him.

And they knew each other intimately now.

Huh.

"Drinkings not so bad, I wasn't really allowed. Maybe one of these days, since no one from the company is around I'll kick back with a bottle of something and see what it's like." Elle smiled either way.

"Oh, well. There's a man from where I'm from named Gabriel.. Sylar, is what he goes by now. He can consume people's powers by cutting their head open and examining their brains." She said it all calmly, like it didn't bother her. It did, on some level. As she'd loved Gabriel. But Sylar? She'd forced him to do it. She still felt awful. "Not so much eating, but people don't live through it. They die either after he's opened their skull, or before that. Sometimes after..." Elle didn't frown, she just took a fork of her own and ate some of the omelet.

"He's enemy number one as far as the company is concerned. But none of us have nabbed him yet. I nearly died trying the last time I saw him. I'm sure he'd love to have my ability."

"Suppose it's a real good thing that he's not around then, is it? Seems like there's a lot of tasty choices for him in this place."

And all the City needed was another villain to bother with. Jesse never would understand why it brought in the bad guys with the good. Seemed to him that it would have been safer to just have one sort. And not the bad sort.

"Well, we'd better be sure to keep you safely inside if you're gonna get drunk. Don't want you startin any bar brawls or shockin anyone who looks at ya wrong." He winked again, to show he was just teasing. He was pretty sure that she had full control of her abilities these days, even if drunk.

"Come on, now. Let's finish this food. I'll help ya work off all the calories."

"It's good, but at the same time I'd like to capture him or kill him so that's over with instead of him running around in my time doing whatever he likes." Elle was determined to get Sylar one day, and one day she would.

She just needed more time.

She laughed. "I think you just want to get me drunk and have me to yourself, Jesse." She didn't mind it either. She was perfectly happy with someone wanting here since it didn't ever seem to last long.

Boys.

"Oh?" The smile that spread across her face was wicked, but not mean, more naughty. She was quick to finish and even quicker hurrying down the hall for what must have been round 10 or 15..

He was shameless, and she was fine with that.
