This is so frustrating...

[Abby]
I failed. I failed them both. I want to go to school, I hate being at home!

[Connor]
...now what? What about the next lower year? Could I pass that?

[Romana]
Connor tested me for school...I was curious and you've seemed busy and I didn't want to bother you. But I failed both t the test. Would you be very offended if I asked Connor to tutor me, too? In addition, not to replace you, of course.

We'll definitely have you in there before the next school year. Maybe before then. Your basic numbers are fine, but complex maths are hard for most people anyway. A student your age should have a pretty good grip on algebra and some geometry at the least. You're doing okay in science, though you'd have to have some work in biology and chemistry to be placed in the right year. Reading comprehension is fine but let's face it, Ariel, some words have different meanings on land than they do for you. That stupid seagull probably didn't help You're getting there, but it'll take work. And American history, and world history in general, will take a little more work.

What is it you like to do? I know you like singing, anything else? Something we could try is making up songs or books or something that are easy to understand but that have historical dates and literary references and mathematical formulas in them.

Which is basically me saying yes.

Really? You think I could be ready for next year? When does the next school year start...? I mean, is it a very long wait? I can work, Connor, I can work really hard, I promise! I'll do anything I have to do to be normal.

I don't know. I like singing, yes. I don't know if anything else that I like would be very useful for learning...like dancing and swimming. OH! I like movies...you know, the moving pictures on the screen? Jimmy showed me and they're really cool!

Really?! Connor, thank you!!

Term usually starts around August or September. So I really think that'd be the latest. Like I said, maybe sooner, but school lets out in June, I think, so we'd be pushing it to try and get you in before then. We'll see. We'll work on it and if it works out, maybe you can get the last quarter in.

I don't know about that. I think anything can be turned into a way to learn. You like movies? Have you ever heard of a thing called a documentary? They can be really brilliant, a way to learn things while watching a movie. They'll definitely help with your history and current events, and some might help you with science, too. I'll get you a list of a few you can watch from your computer, if you want.

Okay, that's good, I can do that. I know I can.

No, I haven't, but that sounds great, yes! Please do :)

I know you can, too. You should also look into some field trips, like kids your age would do. Museums and zoos and things where you can pick up some extra science or history help. You could go with some friends or maybe Romana or I could take you, either way.

Zoos? Museums, I know what those are, are there any around here? They look like fun!

Sure! There's a zoo in Kansas City which is pretty close by and a reeeally big Sedgwick County Zoo. There's even a little nature center here in Lawrence which would be easy for you to visit. You can see wild animals from other places up close and learn about them and their anatomy and their environments. It'll be great for your science education.

And museums? TONS! There's an art museum and a few history museums and a natural history museum, and loads of other brilliant stuff, all right here in the city! There's also an aquarium, but I'm thinking you don't really need that!

But it's wrong to keep animals locked
Why would humans w
Cool. Maybe I'll check it out. I wouldn't need an aquarium, no. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be welcome back in the k But the museums sound really cool; I'll definitely have to check them out :)
