Who: Fred and Marian
What: Meeting
Where: Kitchen
When: Afternoonish
Rating: Doubtfully very high
Status: Incomplete

Fred never, ever wanted to see a Twinkie again. For that past couple of days, she'd had an intense craving for food of any kind and the sweet cake-like thing had become her favorite. She knew, embarrassingly enough, where that feeling had come from too. She'd been high, or something like high. Someone had gotten her high, most likely those rocks they'd been talking about on the boards. Kryptonite. But she didn't remember ever picking up a rock and the effects had worn off.

Her fridge was extremely empty since she'd eaten nearly everything she'd bought and at least put on five pounds. She felt like it. So after a search turned up nothing in hers, she headed downstairs to the communal kitchen and opened the fridge. She made a triumphant noise as she spotted the carton of orange juice and pulled it out, hugging it to her chest. "Thank you," she whispered and grabbed a glass, pouring it nearly to the top.

After putting the carton back, she took a big drink and felt the miserable feeling in her stomach retreat slightly. "Like ambrosia," she stated to no one. "Godly ambrosia."

"Thanks. They already have!" Fred added, looking to the bright side. She held up the glass again. "There's orange juice in the fridge and that was what I was looking for, so it's a good way to start." And she wasn't perpetually high anymore, which was also a significant improvement. It had been fun in high school but the repeat wasn't necessary.

She moved away from the fridge to let Marian have room to manuver around the appliance, leaning up against the counter and cradling the glass in her hands. Her head tilted curiously.

"Only about a month or so. Not very long myself," she said, shaking her head. "I don't mean to be nosy but there's so many fascinating people here from different places and I'm a little curious. Where are you from?"

"I'm glad of that." She may not know the woman well but she could still be happy that things didn't seem so bad for her anymore. She didn't want things to bother others.

Marian took a moment to open the little bottle. After all they didn't have these things back home. Once she did, she took a sip before looking back to Fred.

"I don't mind," she said with a smile. "Nottingham. And you?"

Fred nearly dropped the glass on the floor when Marian said Nottingham. Like Sheriff. Like Robin Hood! That had been one of her favorite tales growing up, the thieves that stole to give to the rich and the strong heroine that had stolen Robin's heart. And she was standing right here in the kitchen.

She quickly recovered, composing herself. Andrew and Buffy had both told her that fictional characters were real here, which meant they were real somewhere else, which meant also real now that they were here. That made her feel somewhat guilty about almost giving into the urge to start fangirling.

"Los Angeles," she replied with a smile. "In California. Nottingham. That's in England, right?"

She took another sip of the water, waiting for her response. She saw a glash of something in reaction to saying she was from Nottingham but didn't know exactly what it was. Putting the lid back on, she pput it down on what she had found was called a counter here, before frowning slightly.

"I'm not familiar with that place, sorry."

She knew it must not be in England, she knew of all the places there. Or at least ost of the places in England.

"And it is, yes."

She'd had a feeling but at the same time, she hadn't wanted to insult her intelligence if she had learned about the place in the time that she had been in Kansas.

"It's part of the same country that Kansas is," she explained and then stretched her arm in the westerly direction, pointing to something they both couldn't see. "But it's way out on the west coast of America instead of in the middle."

She couldn't believe she was talking to Marian. As well as trying not to get all weird on her. Being brought to the 21st century was probably overwhelming enough without finding out about the book thing. Unless she already had. "How are you adjusting to here? It must be strange, far ahead of what you're used to?"

"I really must get myself to the library again. I'd love to see what things have happened since...my time. Or at least all these different placces I'm not familiar with."

It was strange that there was so much more than she ever imagined there could be and she could read all about them. She really wanted to become more aware of all these new things, partly due to her curiousity and partly because it would come in handy.

"Fairly well, I suppose. The differences still throw me a lot, but I'm learning."

Now that was familiar territory. Libraries, books, the knowledge contained therein. Fred didn't even know close to everything the world had to offer but as long as books existed, she could at least try. "If you'd like the company, I could go with you and maybe recommend a few books?" she offered.

It was understandable. She'd been confused after five years gone from the world and now that she had jumped ahead five more. She couldn't imagine what it was like to be so far ahead that almost every single thing had changed. So confusing and yet so fascinating at the same time.

"That's good! That's one of the upsides to being so far ahead of your time. The learning." She gave an embarrassed little shrug. "That might be just me."

"Oh that's very kind of you!"

Marian liked the idea of having help in these places. It meant she wouldn't get too lost, and she would be told what she had to read up on. All those important things she had missed.

"No it is not just you. I've always liked learning new things."

"It's nothing big. I love the library and sometimes I think I'd live in one if I could." It had been the best job while she was working her way through grad school. Well, until the whole thing with the portal and Pylea had happened. After that, she'd been a little leary of the depths of the library.

"Whenever you want to go, just give me a yell and I'll come with you!" She took another drink of orange juice and then set the glass on the counter. "It's nice, isn't it? I mean, what would life be like if we didn't have learning?" Boring. Very boring, in her opinion.

"How are you doing with technology?" She smiled a little wider. "Sometimes that's a little hard to get the hang of even for people who haven't jumped forward in time."

"It was very rare to get a lot of books back home but when I was in the library when I arrived I was amazed by the amount just ready to be read. And I will call on you, thank you."

She had almost squealed when she saw how many, amazed at the masses of books available to her. So many things she had never heard of, never would have heard of if she had not arrived here. She couldn't wait until she could start finding out new things.

"That is...taking a while to come to terms with. I've not gone too far on those...computer things. Only the place I was shown to talk to others here. I will understand eventually, I am sure. Right now I just try not to be too taken back by it all."

"It's great," Fred said, spreading her hands wide in figurative approximation of the amount of books a library could hold. "You'll find them here on just about anything. Fiction, non-fiction, research, stories. Just about any subject you'll want to learn about, you can find books on. The great part about libraries too is that if that one doesn't have what you want, they can borrow from another library for you."

Libraries merited a ramble in Fred's book but she still shook her head, smiling sheepishly. Marian probably didn't need to hear all that, just yet. "They'll let you take books too. You get a card and then you can sign them out. They still need to be returned but sometimes it beats sitting in the stacks."

She nodded sympathetically, tucking some hair behind her ear. "That's a big first step," she assured her. "I know some people who can't even manage that. In fact, I have a friend that sometimes stares at computers like they're out to get him," she joked. "But that is a very good attitude to take."

Marian picked up her bottle again, taking another sip as she listened in fascination. So many things she could learn about and it was all easy to get to. Perhaps this place wouldn't be all that bad after all. She could find out things she always wanted to and learn so much more than she had ever dreamed possible.

"You can take them out of the building?" So that meant she could keep learning everywhere.

"Well I see that all this technology is used all the time, so it seems...right that I learn to understand it all."

She nodded. "Yup! All you have to do is sign a card that they keep in the book so they know that it's being taken out and who it's being taken out by and you can take it with you. Usually only for a set amount of time though. Then you have to start paying fees for having it out too long." She waved a hand dismissively. "But that's usually if you have it out for weeks and weeks."

Her expression became thoughtful as the two topics of conversation crossed paths in mind. "I'm sure there are some good books that could help you with that." She was going to have to explain the "For Dummies" books and how they weren't as insulting as the title sounded. "I think you'll get the hang of it quite easily."

"That's incredible!" she said with a grin.

She could take home books for a while so easily? She never had that opportunity back home, only had whatever books her father could get a hold of and they weren't usually all that brilliant. But here she could read about whatever the books told her, so many subjects in one place.

"That's handy. I'll have to look for them."

"It is! It's changed a little since I worked there but I imagine the fundamentals are still the same." Now that she had spent so much time talking on the subject, she wanted to take a visit herself. Maybe she could even find a job there. She had the experience and it would be far from her job in the practical science division.

The orange juice was starting to settle her stomach and the box of crackers in her line of sight were looking appetizing. Fred picked up the box but the moment she'd opened the flaps, her stomach rumbled angrily at her. She held the box out to Marian instead.

"Crackers?"

"You can work there?" she asked, taking another sip from the water.

The sounded good, actually. She was in need of some form of income and if she could persuade someone to allow her to work there then it was an option. She would just have to keep on looking until she found something suitable. She just knew it would be hard seeing as she wasn't from this time.

"What are they?" Marian asked as she peered into the box curiously.

"Absolutely, as a librarian. You put away books when they're returned, help people find books they might be looking for, and basically make sure that the library runs well. When I worked there, I got to sneak off sometimes to do a little reading." The occult section had especially been alluring, which had gotten her into trouble, but she doubted that it would be like that here.

Fred glanced down at the box, trying to think of a way to describe crackers. "They're little snacks," she said, motioning with her free hand. "These are made out of wheat and a little bit of salt to give it some taste. Actually, I can't describe them with much justice."

Marian listened carefully as she explained what a 'librarian' was. That really did sound like so much fun, a brilliant way to earn money. Even if she wasn't reading whilst there she would still be surrounded by so much knowledge.

"That sounds great."

Her eyes fell to the box again as she looked at the contents. Biting her lip, she waited a moment before reaching in with a thank you, taking one out and taking a small bite from the cracker, taking a moment to make her mind up.

"They are actually rather nice."

"Doesn't it?" The more she talked about it, the more she wondered about getting hired here. It wasn't like she was going to be leaving, unless the seal sent her back. Considering where she had been pulled from, she wasn't looking forward to that. Here wasn't bad.

Her smile was encouraging as Marian reached for a cracker. "They're really good when you're looking for something to munch on. You can add things to them too. Peanut butter, cheese, anything that sounds good really." Her stomach gave an irritated grumble as her thoughts drifted towards food.

Still, she took one out and nibbled on the edge of it. That wasn't too bad.

"I must make sure to visit there then."

She would go whenever she could, she knew how to get there. It was strange how quickly she was getting use to this place seeing as it was so different. She wanted to go back home, yes, but she knew she could be quite comfortable here.

"Thank you for introducing them to me," she said with a little laugh, taking another little bite.

She never thought she'd be introducing someone from Marian's time to crackers. It amused her and at the same time, she found it completely fascinating. The seal really was bringing people from just about everywhere to Lawrence. A strange place for an epicenter of paranormal activity.

"You're welcome," she replied. Then another thought struck her. "Have you had tacos yet? Those are even better than crackers."

She kept nibbling at the cracker, taking a sip of water with a smile. Some of the things she had found here really made it easier to settle. That she was glad of. Otherwise, she wasn't sure how she would cope.

"Tacos? Can't say I have, sorry. What are they?"

That was another thing, along with a trip to the library, that was going to have to be remedied. "It's probably the best meal ever," she replied, grinning.

"It's this shell and it's filled with meat, lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, and whatever else you might want to put on there. They're delicious." Of course that was all opinion but she firmly believed that it was hard to dislike tacos.

She took in each of the ingrediants, imagining such a meal. She had to admit that didn't sound too bad and it really was on her list of things to do and try whilst she was here. She might as well make the most of this place and learn about things and try things that she never would back in Nottingham.

"They sound quite nice. I will have to try one of these tacos when I can."

Fred was already brainstorming. On the boards, she'd seen several people talking about cooking. There were some that should never try cooking again and a couple that she wondered if she could talk into making a meal like that.

"Maybe some night they'll make a big meal," she said outloud, biting her lip. "I could suggest tacos if anyone asks."

Marian smiled at that, nodding a little. Feasts were usual in Nottingham. Well they were before Vaizey took over and the whole Shire was suddenly less happy than before.

"You wouldn't have to, unless that was what you wanted as well. I'm sure I'll find them at some point."

"Yeah but it'd be about getting everybody together for the dinner too," she said, slightly excited about the idea. "A big gettogether for everyone to meet everyone else." Of course, that wasn't her area. It would feel like stepping on other's toes but it did sound nice, considering that she was still learning who was in the complex.

"I still need to find a good taco place around here. I haven't had any in a long time. Or it feels like a long time."

"That's a good idea."

It would be good if such a thing was arranged. It would give her a chance to meet new people, meet everyone who lived here. And she really did like that idea.

The request brought on a soft smile. "Of course. You'll be the first person I tell," she replied. "Then you'll have to let me know what you think about them!"

Finishing off the cracker, she set the open box down on the counter and reclaimed her glass to finish off the rest of the orange juice. "It's very nice to have met you, Marian. I haven't exactly been...social," she said, hesitating only a moment before filling in the word.

"Thank you. And I will. I really do want to experience as much as possible whilst I am here."

Marian finished off her own cracker before taking a sip from the water. She put the bottle back, smiling at Fred's words and nodding.

"It has been nice to meet you too. I am glad to have met someone new." And to have made a friend, she added in her head, not wanting to make Fred feel like she had little choice in the matter. "And I am sorry to hear that."

She wanted to ask if something was bothering her but that was too forward for a first meeting.

Fred grinned. "There will be plenty of things for you to experience while you're here." And hopefully it was the fun stuff. Sure, there was an apocalypse a-brewing on the horizon and craziness around every corner, but that wouldn't be everything they had to show.

She took a sip of the orange juice. Marian's words she found to be very touching. "I'm glad I got to meet someone new too," she said, tilting her head. And one of her childhood literary heroes. That was absolutely surreal.

She waved a hand in the air. "My own choice. But now I'm working on being more social," she added lightly. A work in progress. "With new people showing up all the time, that's not too hard."

"I'm glad. I never had the chance to go anywhere further than Nottingham, so I really do like the idea of seeing and learning of new things."

She nodded, smiling a little. She was glad that Fred didn't appear annoyed by the constant questions and Marian's lack of knowledge about this place. Laughing softly when Fred admitted it was her own fault, Marian kept her gaze on the other woman and smiled softly.

"Well I am glad that I was one of the people who got to speak with you."

She would have loved to have seen Nottingham. The books painted a lovely image but sometimes reality just didn't hold up. So far, Marian was an exception to that. "I know the feeling. When I was growing up, I was in that one area all the time. When I had a chance to broaden my horizons, I was really excited."

Of course, she wasn't as far from home as Marian was. At least, not technically. This version of Kansas was another dimension and a few years ahead of hers, but it had a lot of similarities.

"Thank you," she replied, smiling. Moving over to the fridge, she refilled her glass. "I think I'm going to head back up. If you need any help with the library or just wanna talk, feel free to give me a shout!"

"It is a very nice feeling, to be able to see more than I ever thought possible," Marian said with a smile, agreeing with how Fred said she had felt.

She watched as Fred moved to refill her glass, moving a little to make sure she wasn't in the way. At her offer she couldn't resist the grin as she nodded.

"I will. Thank you for the offer, it is nice to know there is someone I can easily talk to here."

"Of course!" The day she quit being easy to talk to was...well, she wasn't sure what that day would be, but it wasn't going to happen.

With her glass filled, she waved at Marian as she started for the door again. "I'll be seeing you around. Have a good day!"
