Over the last several days, Pike had learned quite a bit. Faith wanted to kill Buffy, she was a Slayer, she’d accidentally killed a guy… He didn’t know the whole story yet, since Buffy hadn’t told him about what happened after Faith killed that guy, but given that she still wanted to kill Buffy he had a feeling the Watchers hadn’t sent anybody.
Which made him question whether his perceptions of the Watchers were right. He thought it was their job to care for and watch over the Slayers. He was hoping he was wrong, but his read of the situation right now didn’t exactly leave room for the Watchers doing the right thing.
Buffy had told him to get out. He’d considered that, truthfully. Any normal, sane person would have, but he’d decided against it. He probably even could have done it, too. But his gut told him that Faith needed someone. Maybe it had already been tried, for all he knew. But he hadn’t tried it yet, and even if it had been tried, he couldn’t just leave her when she seemed to need someone.
He’d run away from one Slayer and never stopped feeling guilty for it. He couldn’t do that again, even if it was kind of irrational and dangerous. Besides, he really felt like he could help Faith deal, maybe do a little good. He knew the risk he was taking and was well aware of what would happen if he was wrong, but it was a risk he was willing to take. The worst that could happen was a bad case of death, and there were a million and one ways for that to happen every day, and that was before factoring in the normal stuff, like car accidents. At least if he died here, he died trying to do the right thing. At least this way he wouldn't die a coward, leaving some girl in the dust because of his own fears.
And sure, there had been sex. The first few times it was before he knew who she was, but now he did and it…changed things, but wasn’t going to change what was going on between them. It was incredibly awkward, knowing he was having sex with someone that wanted to kill his ex. The ex that he still harbored some feelings for. But he also liked Faith. When she wasn’t focusing on killing Buffy, she was pretty cool. There was also a part of him that worried that she’d get suspicious if suddenly things changed, and if he was going to help her that was the last thing he needed.
He had noticed that there was going to be a problem, though. He wasn’t working. He’d hustled a little pool, but that wasn’t a source of income they could depend on for any length of time. And while Faith probably had her own ideas about how to get money, he didn’t really fancy the cops showing up with some uncomfortable questions. Kind of detrimental to his overall plan, they were.
So after dinner, he was going to head out to a few clubs, see if they needed bouncers or something. Surviving for as long as he had as a demon hunter, he’d picked up skills that would come in handy in that general line of work. Surviving demon fights was a human when they got in close range typically relied on constant movement, dodging back and forth and such, disabling techniques, and a general hit-and-run mindset. Get in, punch/kick/stab, get back out of range. Always successful? No, as the scars on his torso proved. But his heart was still beating. And if he used those same techniques against humans? They would be far more effective, since humans didn’t tend to have enhanced endurance, or tough hides or anything.
But for now, he plopped down into their regular table, passing Faith the beers as per usual. “So,” he began, “I’ve heard there’s a club around here needing a bouncer. I’m gonna give that a shot, since it seems like we’ll be stuck here for a little while.”
