Entry tags:grant ward, skye

Who: Skye and Grant Ward
What: Checking up on him because she's an idiot
When: Sometime after checking on Felicia after this
Where: Ward's domicile
Rating/Warnings: F for Feeeeeeeels? Warnings for Ward being creepy?
Status: Closed and Incomplete

Although she would never admit it to herself, a part of Skye thought maybe Ward was right about emotions being a weakness. People, in general, didn't make you weak, but Skye didn't always think of her compassion as an asset. She wanted to be more like May - able to channel her anger and her pain into a fight but also able to keep her emotions from controlling her. She wanted that ability to remain cool, calm and in control. More than anything, though, she wanted to be able to say she didn't care what happened to Grant Ward and mean it.

Hating him had felt simple. It was easy to hold onto her anger over everything he had done, because that meant she didn't have to feel the other emotions thoughts of his betrayal often brought to the surface. He had been her SO. Her friend. And something more or at least the potential to be something. Ward's admission of having feelings for her had caught her by surprise, but for an instant she had returned those feelings. And then everything had fallen apart as she realized that he had been the one to kill Koenig. He was a traitor to them all. In the months that followed, hating Ward was the only way she got through it without completely breaking down the way she had for those few minutes on the secret base before she'd steeled herself for what needed to be done.

Holding on to her anger proved harder here in Lawrence, though. Ward wasn't locked up in a cell here. He was harder to avoid. And then he had to go and save her life. If that wasn't enough, as she watched their show, she started to feel stirrings of that same compassion that had made her unable to let Deathlok kill him. Some part of her knew that was a weakness. Ward clearly thought it was and yet it seemed to be a trait he admired. It didn't make sense.

Maybe it was the rum or maybe it was just sheer stupidity, but rather than heading for the warehouse after checking on Felicia back at the office, Skye found herself walking toward the place Ward lived. In their earlier conversation, he had admitted to being upset Tony was gone, but not openly. Only to her. Did that make it her responsibility to be his source of comfort? She didn't know. She didn't even know why she was letting herself care and yet she still found herself standing on his doorstep, raising her hand to knock.

Ward didn't expect her that evening. She'd never come to visit him. Why would she? But she'd definitely gotten to him. Making him think about the fact that maybe he missed Stark being around. That maybe the man had become a friend to him and maybe missing him wasn't a weakness in the way he'd been thought it was. Maybe his feelings for Skye didn't have to be that either and maybe it was okay to let that in. He'd started to really care about her, training her back on the bus. Watching her fight back against death itself, watching her grow into someone that truly deserved to be an agent. And all the while knowing he'd hurt her some day but wishing above all else that he didn't have to.

He'd poured himself a beer and sat, just trying to figure out what exactly had happened during the whole mess that was today. It was all kinds of a mess but he'd done what he had to, helped out Hardy by getting her friends involved and realised he'd been more right about Romanoff than he'd though. Maybe she could take him in a fight but she really wasn't as bright as people assumed. And a raging bitch too boot. But he'd play her game, if only to piss her off.

The knock to the door took him by suprise. Damon maybe, Cap, Caroline even? Opening it, he didn't expect Skye. Of all people. But seeing her there, at his door, coming to see him?

"Are you...is something wrong?" he asked hesitantly, wondering what this was, why she'd come to see him and why she'd do it alone.

Truth be told, Skye didn't expect to be here tonight, either. It hasn't even felt like a conscious decision when her feet had first started in this direction, but when she's realized where she was headed, she hadn't given much thought to turning another way, either. Some part of Skye wanted to see him, whether it was because she wanted to know he was okay or for some other reason she wasn't willing to admit to herself. The fact was that Skye cared about him in ways she shouldn't. She used anger and sarcasm as a kind of shield to protect herself from feelings that never quite went away, because only an idiot would let someone back in after they'd done all he'd done. And Skye wouldn't be made a fool by him again.

His words as he pulled open the door shouldn't have surprised her. She had been trying lately, but there was still plenty of hostility coming from her. She was guarded when she spoke to him, always holding back. Then again, normally when she saw him, she hadn't just helped Felicia drink two bottles of rum. She wasn't falling down drunk by any means, but the alcohol had dulled her senses and lowered her inhibitions. It had made it just a little easier to forget why she kept her distance.

"Maybe I just wanted to see you," she replied, leaning against the frame of the open door. Her words slurred slightly as she looked up at him and her eyes were bright with intoxication. Okay, maybe she was a little drink. Like, the tiniest amount. But the words she had just spoken were a truth she wouldn't have dared uttered sober. She wasn't just here because she worried or because she let responsible for anything. She was here because some part of her - a part she might normally try to force down - really wanted to be.

A good man probably would have thought about it before inviting her in. Realised she was at least a little drunk and figured she'd hate this when she sobered up. But he'd told her before, he wasn't a good man. Besides which he was hardly going to let her walk back to the warehouse drunk. He'd walk her there or she could crash and he'd have the couch. Whichever she wanted.

But ultimately, right now, the guard was down, she was acting so much more like the Skye she'd been before he'd destroyed it all. She'd been over dealing with Hardy and probably dealt with a few of her own worries. And that had brought her here.

"Or maybe you had more booze with Hardy than you thought" he said, moving to the side to let her through the door. "Coffee? Otherwise I have beer and mixing drinks probably shouldn't be a thing."

"Aren't you happy to see me?" Skye frowned, it was more of a pout, really. She was supposed to be making him smile, right? Yes, that was definitely why she was here, to cheer him up and stuff. He didn't look very cheered, though, or maybe that was just cause he was offering her coffee and making allusions to her being drunk. Which she wasn't. Definitely not.

"Those are my choices? Coffee and beer? Geez, we've really got to talk about your pantry-stocking skills." Skye's voice was light and teasing as she moved past him, not stumbling at all, thankyouverymuch which was proof positive that she was a lot less drunk than he thought. She was tipsy, sure, definitely buzzed, but it wasn't like she didn't know what she was doing. She knew where she was. Her mind was just pleasantly fuzzy on the reasons she shouldn't be here. Or maybe the part of her that still thought about him in ways that weren't horrible was just stronger tonight, but either way, she more or less knew what she was doing.

"I'm always happy to see you." he told her amused. He had said he'd never lie to her after all. And maybe she needed coffee. But if she didn't want that he wasn't about to push her. She seemed happy drunk. A couple of slurred words but that was hardly a shocker. And of course mocking his lack of alcohol choice. He couldn't help but laugh at that, she knew him well enough to know it was pretty much just beer, and good beer. "What, I drink beer. If you want fancy wine or tequila or whatever then you left Hardy's too early."

Okay so, 'pretty much' just beer. There might maybe have been some whiskey. But that was for him not for drunk Skye. Which wasn't a lie. It was helping. She didn't need to be drunker.

He mostly wanted to know why she'd come to see him. Was it just about keeping him happy, sane, not a danger? He didn't know and a part of him just didn't want to question it. She was here, she was with him because she wanted to be and that meant something, drunk or not. She wasn't drunk enough to not know what she was doing. She'd found her way here hadn't she?

"So are you gonna have a beer or are you gonna judge my pantry stocking some more?" he joked, realising as he spoke how much he'd missed this with her. They clearly just needed battleship and they were set.

"Mmm, yes, beer me, please," she agreed after some thought, "but I'm still going to judge your pantry stocking skills if those are the only two things you have in there."

Skye knew it had been awhile since the banter had been easy between them, but that didn't seem so important right now. Maybe she just didn't want to focus on that stuff tonight. Maybe the part of her that missed him was stronger than the part that constantly warned her to keep him at arms' length. Because he was dangerous. He'd betrayed them all. She'd almost died because of his boss and a lot of people had died because of him. The alcohol burning through her body made those reservations a lot quieter, though.

And the last thing she needed was more alcohol, even if it was only beer, but she wasn't exactly thinking clearly. What she probably needed was some food to soak up the alcohol or some water to rehydrate her. But at present, a beer sounded just fine.

"So, how are you?" she asked, looking around his place. She'd never been here, not since her arrival here in Lawrence. Or her re-arrival, she guessed. She'd been here before, but she didn't remember any of it.

"Only two alcholoic things. I probably eat healthier than you do." he told her, walking across to the kitchen to grab a bottle for Skye. She could have one more. Maybe two. Then he was cutting her off. He didn't really understand what stroke of luck had brought her here to him but he wasn't about to complain either. And ultimately she was safe with him even if she probably soberly wouldn't believe that. He just wasn't ready to give up this Skye that cared about him, asked how he was, visited him. Drunk or not, it was something.

"I'm doing better." he told her, handing her the beer and sitting on the couch near her, not beside her, not yet. That was her choice. "I've been trying to figure out what the hells going on at Stark now that he's gone and y'know, I am making friends. I didn't think I would but it happened and its maybe not the worst thing in the world."

Without warning as he usually did, Glen bounded into the room, awoken obviously by the noise of Skye arriving. Ward smiled, possibly the only genuine smile he had around anyone but Skye and leaned down to fuss him.

"Oh and there's this guy. Meet Glen. Present from Stark. Truth be told I assumed it was a test. Its usually...But he's a great puppy. Growing so much every time I turn around."
