He could feel Daine's magic flaring clear from the university. Her wild magic was like a beacon; if Ozorne had had her in one of his magic-proofed cells, it clearly hadn't been enough to hold her. Numair had to hurry if he wished to catch up, because he could already physically see and hear the havoc she was wreaking at the palace. He was practically flying through the streets between there and the university, and then...
No. No, this couldn't be. He wasn't here a split second ago. Cold wind bit right through the light linen desert clothing he was wearing. The street before him was strange, smooth black pavement that was nothing like the flagstone paths of Carthak. The buildings too were unrecognizable, not at all Carthaki, nor like those found in Tortall, or anywhere else. Most noticeable of all was the fact that he no longer could he feel Daine's magic singing out to him. Desperate for some sort of sign, he flung his senses open wide, taking in all the magics nearby. There were all different kinds of magic of some kind all around, nothing like any he'd felt before. Nowhere could he sense the coppery fire of his student's magic that he'd been tuning into to track her down.
Moreover, this entire world just felt wrong; there was no Gift here, the feel of the Realm itself was off-kilter. He'd known Carthaki mages had been tampering with the barrier between the mortal realms and the Divine Realms, but this... to transport him so swiftly and so seamlessly would take a vastly powerful sorcerer... or a god.
Numair started down the street, hoping to find someone who might be able to direct him to a mage of this strange realm. Just because he couldn't sense Daine didn't mean she wasn't here. He hadn't been able to sense her in Carthak until only a short time ago, cut-off as she was by Ozorne's cells. If she was here, he had to find her, because he was not leaving without his student again. Someone familiar with the strange magics he could sense here might be able to help him. He could only pray they'd be friendly.
