So he had to face the cold, hard truth: the vacation he planned on taking after the council meeting was not going to happen. It wasn't as if the place didn't exist, but his reservation and his surfboard certainly did not. On the upside, the rental car was pretty much his now. He didn't think Enterprise was going to be sending their employees across dimensions to retrieve it. The SUV was just a lttle more reliable than his old jeep.

He was pretty sure that his stepfather would have loved this place and the differences in demonology for their world. Even he was interested. The rules of his world had been turned upside down, which had brought up a few good questions. Like could a halfdemon be possessed by one of the Lost-like smoke demons?

"Why me?" He hadn't realized he'd spoken outloud. "Not that the dimensional exchange student thing is all bad but seriously..." He hesitated and started patting down his pockets. "I really hope I didn't forget my wallet."

"Yeah. Living that long would get kind of lonely." He knew a couple of vampires but had never asked about it. It seemed too personal.

He shook his head. "Nowhere yet. Looks like there's a diner over there if you're really hungry. One of those quaint ones." He pointed towards the place. "Me? It's a lot like here. No ruin of mankind thankfully. It has its own little quirks too but it's not bad."

She bumped him gently with a shoulder, "Not that hard up just yet, ate a late lunch, actually, got energy to keep looking for a while. Soooo, what kind of quirks? Like, I mean, is the grass blue and the sky green? Or do people say goodbye instead of hello or what?"

She really was curious, it was one of her almost-bad habits.

"Then we press on, hunting for Chinese which may or may not exist. It's still too early to tell." He leaned lazily with the bump.

"Nyah, nothing that interesting. Well, we do have the spooky supernatural stuff that this place does, only it's not the same, it's not as obvious, and really, a lot more normal than people think," he said. That seemed safe enough. If she was one of the people who ended up in the wrong place, then she knew about that anyway. "So very similar to here."

"I know they don't have a city interface here, but they've got to have some sort of directory, right? If nothing else I bet we can find it in one of those." She tilted her head, just listening, finally nodding, "We don't have anything like that where I'm from, well, I mean, there's Special Circumstances, but they're just like Pretties plus." She shrugged, "I'd know, I am one."

"Yeah, but where's the fun in that?" A moment of hesitation followed. "Except for the part where walking around at night with those demons running around probably isn't the best idea but we'll just call that living dangerously." And he could protect himself, and her, if need be.

"Pretties plus?" Adam grinned. "That sounds like some kind of store."

If it came down to it, she could protect herself, and him, if he needed it. She laughed at the statement, shrugging, "Guess so, it's just that we've got all our reflexes and stuff amped all the way up, like the wolves in a flock of sheep." Almost exactly like that, really, most of the Specials were frighteningly pretty, as if the operation had been taken two steps too far.

"So you're practically a superhero then." It was almost scary what science could do in her time, maybe in his time. Some of the advances being made were already pretty impressive. "I can safely say we have nothing like that. Well, you can get work done but it's nothing like that."

"I guess so." She said with a shrug, "Something like that anyway." She shook her head then, smiling again, "I wouldn't expect you to have anything like it, I mean, you don't even have the Operation yet, not like I know it, I mean, you've probably got plastic surgery, right?"

"Yeah, we got that. I live in California, which some people consider the state of plastic surgery, with Los Angeles." He shrugged. "But there's no big, overall operation. Just a lot of little ones, sometimes at the same time." He held up a hand. "Plastic surgery isn't my thing. I just started on that tangent and it kept going, despite my best efforts to stop it."

She smiled, shaking her head, "That's where it started though, regular plastic surgery, the surgeons were the ones who knew it, the biologists were the ones who could track the tags, genetic markers, things people respond to." She shrugged, "They make it sound really boring in school, all charts and graphs and things, but I think everyone wants to be on the Committee."

"You know, it's kind of scary when biologists get involved in plastic surgery. Not that you can argue with the results but in my time? You roll your eyes at a lot of the procedures people have done because they don't need them. Then fastforward to your time and they sound scientific and serious. A necessity for human survival." He shuddered briefly. "Make fun of it today, depend on it tomorrow."

"Kinda like mag-lev." She said, shrugging, "I know you guys have some of it, but it's mostly for like, show, just to prove that it can work, back home everything is based off lifter technology. Magnets hold everything up, cars, boards, ice rinks, even buildings."

"I am liking the sound of all this hovering stuff. I'm tired of buying tires for my jeep." If it was here. Maybe his lack of presence at the meeting and an angry car rental place would get his friends motivated to start looking for him and then rescue his rear end. "What's mag-lev?"

"Oh, right, magnetic levitation. Magnets pushing against each other instead of sticking together. They say some of the first mag-lev technology was for like, monorails and bullet trains, stuff that was for show and not everyday use." She shrugged, "Apparently the Rusties didn't think it was a viable technology for everyday use. Same as like, wind turbines for power."

"Magnetic levitation. Got it." Which made sense now. Mag-lev. "We're not that far yet. We're still running on wheels and rails and whatever. I don't even think they've gotten crap to float yet." But what did he know? It wasn't like he paid attention to that. "People are getting on that wind turbine kick. Wind energy. It's turning into a big save the earth kind of thing."

She nodded, "We use a lot of it back home, that and water power, there's a river that runs through the city, it helps power the generators. We're pretty well self-contained." She brightened a moment later, "Hong Kong House, sound like Chinese to you?" She asked, pointing out the restaurant at the far end of the block. Far enough away, in fact, that the sign was barely visible.

Gravitational rebellion and crazy plastic surgery all went out the window as he glanced in the direction she'd pointed, finding they'd reached the end of their quest. "That definitely sounds Chinese," he said, giving her arm a tug as his stomach rumbled. "I'm buying since I had to satisfy my craving."

"Hey, if you want to be all chivalrous-like I won't argue." She shrugged, "And only partly because I don't really know how money works here, I mean, back home if we needed something we just requisitioned it."

"Requisitioned? Like asked and you received or want, see, take?" As they reached the small restaurant, he quickly moved ahead to grab the handle and pull the door open for her. "Old style chivalrous. My mother said to be nice to girls," he told her, grinning.

"Your mama's a smart lady." She said, smiling again, that full-wattage grin, "And the first, it was definitely an ask and you shall receive kind of thing." She added as she slipped inside, scanning the small storefront restaurant easily, with one back and forth sweep of her head, like a bird of prey scanning a field for food, really.

"Yes, she is." He followed her into the restaurant, immediately searching for the menu. Sliding one off the counter, he turned back to Shay as he unfolded it. "All right, it looks like we've got a lot of choices here. I'm feeling the orange chicken myself but the dumplings sound like they might be a good start."

She leaned against him so she could read the menu as well, nodding, "Looks like about the same options they'd have back home, just y'know, with real meat, not soy proteins." A nod, "Icy. At least I kind of know what I like. Dumplings is always good, and I'm more of a teriyaki chicken fan."

"Yeah. See, that? We can't have that. No soy proteins here. Only the real stuff." He folded the menu back up and set it beside the register. "We'll take an order of dumplings, a teriyaki chicken, and an orange chicken please." He gave the woman behind the counter a smile as he went for his wallet. Once she'd rung up the price, he dropped the necessary bills on the counter and turned to regard his guest. "You pick where we sit."

And that was an easy choice, as far as she was concerned, one of the smaller tables towards the back, but where she could still see the door. She sat with her back to the wall, used to knowing her full surroundings. She shrugged her board off, leaning it against the wall behind her, "You know, I kinda like it here."

He followed her back to the table, sitting across from her. Nearly putting his elbow in a small puddle of soy sauce that had been left behind, he pulled out a couple of napkins and wiped it up. "The restaurant or the city?" he asked. "I mean, the restaurant is nice. I approve of the music. It really sets the mood."
