So he had to face the cold, hard truth: the vacation he planned on taking after the council meeting was not going to happen. It wasn't as if the place didn't exist, but his reservation and his surfboard certainly did not. On the upside, the rental car was pretty much his now. He didn't think Enterprise was going to be sending their employees across dimensions to retrieve it. The SUV was just a lttle more reliable than his old jeep.

He was pretty sure that his stepfather would have loved this place and the differences in demonology for their world. Even he was interested. The rules of his world had been turned upside down, which had brought up a few good questions. Like could a halfdemon be possessed by one of the Lost-like smoke demons?

"Why me?" He hadn't realized he'd spoken outloud. "Not that the dimensional exchange student thing is all bad but seriously..." He hesitated and started patting down his pockets. "I really hope I didn't forget my wallet."

"Why not you?" came the reply, followed a moment later by the girl who'd said it. She was young, maybe eighteen, and had her hair pulled back in a pair of braids. Slung across her back was what looked like a snub-nosed surfboard, if surfboards came with snap-on utility straps and green LED indicator lights across the front.

She shrugged, thumbs hooked into her pockets, "I mean, you asked, so I figure you were looking for an answer, sorry if I'm being all interrupting."

He hadn't thought anyone was around. Then again, he hadn't exactly looked first before he started talking. It just slipped out, talking to the night. He turned, hands coming out of his pocket and dropping the key card with the sudden movement. "It was rhetorical," he admitted, "but I am open to answers." With a quick grin, he bent to pick up the card and stuffed it in his pocket.

"No, no, I don't mind. It's better than saying I'm talking to myself which really? Does not sound good for my sanity."

She grinned then, shrugging, "It does make you sound a little crazy-face, but that's cool, I mean, I probably looked about the same a minute ago, trying to get ahold of my clique on the 'tenna. They really aren't here though, so I should probably stop trying." Another head shake, "And that probably doesn't mean anything to you, let's start at the beginning, Hi, I'm Shay." She said, offering a hand to shake.

Wow, Adam thought, blinking, I must be getting old. Only part of that sounded right. Or it was possible that he was behind on his slang. Then again, with Savannah as his constant part in crime, he severely doubt it. "I'm not crazy. Promise," he stated, holding up his hands. "I don't usually talk to myself either. Rare thing."

He reached out to take her hand, grinning. "Hey Shay, I'm Adam," he said. Standing closer to her, he nodded to the board slung across her back. "Skateboarding?" he asked.

"Well you got the board part right." She said, shrugging one shoulder. There was a shifty look then, as if making sure they weren't going to be overheard, "You a local? Or a recent arrival?" She had to remind herself, multiple times a day, that no one here would know what a hoverboard was, except in theory, and the only reason some of the people at the apartments might was if they came from somewhere closer to her time.

The look made him wonder briefly if he'd asked a wrong question, glancing over his own shoulder. "Uh, recent arrival," he said, approaching the answer cautiously. "I sort of ended up here accidently." He wasn't sure if she was one of the misplaced, displaced people that seemed to be running around the place and admitting that in addition to talking to himself really did not look good for his sanity.

"I just got here about a week or so ago and haven't left yet. It's a nice town," he added.

She grinned then, "Me too, been a couple days, so, yeah, board, but not a skateboard, no wheels." She nodded in the general direction of the park a few blocks off, "Headed to the park, don't figure there's anyone around there this time of night, I can get some practice in."

The wary look gave way to a grin. "Hell of a way to take a vacation, huh?" he asked, shaking his head. "I think the tourism board is on to something." He tilted his head towards her board. "No wheels? Like hover?" Since people were showing up from everywhere and anytime, something like that? Would be awesome.

"Yeah. Even if they don't get what's going on, people seem to steer clear. Survival instinct kicking in."

"Exactly like hover, actually, since it is hover." She shrugged, "Apparently I'm not supposed to tell people that since this is like, ancient history for me, but you seem like a pretty icy guy, you're sharp, you would've figured it out anyway." She gave him a wink before shrugging again, "So where were you headed when I started answering questions to nobody in particular?"

Adam held up a hand. "Ok, that? Is the coolest thing I've heard in the past couple of days." He grinned, standing a little straighter with his arms crossed over his chest. "Well, I never would have known for sure unless you confirmed it."

He glanced down the street. "To see if there were any Chinese food joints around this place. It sounded good."

She tilted her head, thinking that over, finally commenting, "You know, I don't think I've ever had Chinese food, not the real stuff, anyway, just like, dehydrated re-constituted emergency survival rations. Not really the same thing at all. Would you like some company on your quest?" She asked, looking all doe-eyed and innocent.

Adam shook his head slowly. "No. Unacceptable." She'd never had Chinese, the real stuff? It was his mission to fix this problem pronto. "Not only do I not mind, but I was planning on dragging you along after politely inquiring as to whether or not you have already had dinner? But since you asked, we'll just skip to you're coming with me. I have no idea if we'll find a place but it's worth a try."

That and he was always up for company. "See, it's a good thing I was talking to myself."

She beamed at that, "So I guess playing crazy helps make you friends, glad that works for you." She said with a wink, looping her arm through his a moment later, mostly just because she could, "And if we don't find Chinese we'll probably find something. I'm kind of used to reconstituted food anyway, soy protien instead of meat, blah blah blah." She shook her head, "Rabbit roasted over an open flame or boiled in a stew is as far as my foodie experience goes."

"In this case. Usually when playing crazy, everyone else tries to get as far away from you as they can, or they call in the guys to put you in a jacket where you can hug yourself all the time. I don't know about you but I really don't love me that much," he joked. There wasn't a single protest when her arm looped through his.

"Yeah. Even though that's where my heart is, I'm willing to be flexible." He wrinkled up his nose. "That's not food. That's...something trying to pretend it's food and failing miserabley," he stated. "Although I've heard rabbit is good. It's sweet or something?"

"Sort of, I guess." She shrugged, "I actually liked fish better, mostly because it was less messy to clean, not a big fan of guts under my fingernails." She shook her head, "I mean, we're not savages."

She moved easily, like someone who was fully aware of exactly where all her limbs were at any given time, sure of her center of balance and her surroundings, it was a smooth, predatory grace, and was usually enough to set people on edge.

"I've only cleaned fish which was a huge pain in the rear end." He glanced over at her. "I wouldn't say that. You're definitely not what comes to mind when I hear the word 'savage'. Really far from it, in fact."

But that with what she'd said earlier piqued his curiosity. "So where and when are you from, Shay?"

She shrugged, "Far enough along that this is ancient history, we call them the Rusties, because all the metal they left behind has become rusted out hulks and spires. There was a disaster, apocalyptic, really, most of the population wiped out in a matter of days." She shook her head, "Boring stuff they teach in history class. The survivors realized they had to change the way things had been run, and they did, so now there's no more war, not really, and no more plagues or anything. Just Pretties living in harmony, watched over by Special Circumstances."

"Ouch. We became the Rusties," Adam said, putting his free hand to his chest as if he'd been injured by the remark. The thought of civilization being hit hard by an apocalypse sobered him however. "That's rough. Really rough." And not a future he wanted to look forward to. It hadn't looked like a possibility in his reality but here? Who knew.

"Pretties? Special Circumstances?" He glanced over at her, an eyebrow arching. "That sounds kind of...strange."

She nodded, "We call it The Crash. When everything came crashing down. Something happened to the petrolium, made it more like phosphor, explosive when it came into contact with good old air. It was like a virus that only effected oil-based products. And Pretties... Okay." She pulled him to a stop easily enough, "Look at me, I mean really look. You probably won't be able to place it, so I'll tell you, my face is symmetrical. Perfectly symmetrical, and I've got a whole lot of other things due to the Operation, stuff that's like... genetically programmed into humans to respond to with 'wow, that's pretty', and I probably shouldn't even be telling you, but I figure this is a different universe than mine, and even if it isn't, like I said, ancient history."

"You know, it's starting to sound that no matter where you come from, the world is headed for a whole lot of trouble." Demons, apocalypses, viruses. It was like some kind of sci-movie where all the cities collapsed and evil lurked around every corner. Definitely not the future he wanted to look forward to.

He stopped and turned to face her. The request wasn't hard to comply with. Shay was very attractive. He squinted slightly, trying to figure out what he was supposed to be looking at. "So they do surgery on you guys for attraction purposes?" He shrugged. "Hey, there's probably a lot of stuff being said that's not supposed to be said but it wouldn't make much difference because no one is where they're supposed to be."

She shrugged, "Really it's more for homogenization, if everybody looks the same, and everybody's Pretty, there's no reason to fight anymore." Though she'd seen for herself that this didn't really work as well as the Committee said it did, which was why Special Circumstances existed.

She smiled, "And there's other benefits, I mean, nobody gets sick either, and people live a lot longer, I mean, maximum life expectancy now is what? Seventy years? Eighty? Some of the crumblies, uh, the old-Pretties, they're in their mid-hundreds."

He fell silent for a moment, mulling that over. "And that worked?" he asked. Wait, that was a stupid question wasn't it? It had to have worked if they were still doing it. But it was an answer he never would have thought of. "That's different."

Adam did a double take. "Mid-hundreds? Wow. Here I always thought making it over a hundred would rock. I can't imagine a century and a half."

She nodded, "Some of them, not all of them though, most of them give it up after the first century or two. I know I would." She waved a hand dismissively then, "Anyway, enough of me being a talks-a-lot, what are things like where you're from? And do you see anywhere that's got Chinese food yet?"

"Yeah. Living that long would get kind of lonely." He knew a couple of vampires but had never asked about it. It seemed too personal.

He shook his head. "Nowhere yet. Looks like there's a diner over there if you're really hungry. One of those quaint ones." He pointed towards the place. "Me? It's a lot like here. No ruin of mankind thankfully. It has its own little quirks too but it's not bad."

She bumped him gently with a shoulder, "Not that hard up just yet, ate a late lunch, actually, got energy to keep looking for a while. Soooo, what kind of quirks? Like, I mean, is the grass blue and the sky green? Or do people say goodbye instead of hello or what?"

She really was curious, it was one of her almost-bad habits.
