Who: Harry Potter & Hermione Granger
When: November 26, 2010
Where: Lawrence, Kansas: Mall then the street
What: Harry has finally defeated Voldemort...only to be transported to a crowded American mall on Black Friday.
Ratings: PG

Adrenaline still pumped through his veins, even though the war was over and Voldemort was dead. It was hard to get his heart to stop racing because he had spent the better part of the last year on high alert and even if his mind knew he could finally relax, his body wouldn't cooperate. The only thing that Harry wanted to do now was find a bed and fall asleep for a few days, if not longer. Breathing heavily a few times in an attempt to calm himself down long enough so he could drag himself up to Gryffindor Tower, he closed his eyes. When he found a sense of peace that he hadn't felt in a long time, he reopened them only to find himself in middle of a crowded shopping centre.

"What?" Startled, he blinked rapidly to make sure he wasn't hallucinating. When the scenery didn't change back to Dumbledore's office, he pinched himself. "Ow!" Now knowing that he wasn't dreaming and not sure how he had arrived at this shopping centre, he briefly entertained the thought that he had somehow Apparated. However, his musings were cut short when a little girl, who had been shopping with her mother, opened her mouth and pointed directly at Harry. "IT'S HARRY POTTER!" There was a split second of silence that followed her declaration, before noise seemed to burst from all around Harry and people started to mob him. They grabbed at his sleeves and shirt, tugging to get him to look this way or that.

"Mr. Radcliffe, can I have your autograph?"

"Omg I can't believe Harry Potter came to our mall!"

"MOM. GET A PICTURE OF ME AND DANIEL, OKAY?"

And so they carried on. Harry, unfortunately unaware of what was going on, did the only thing he could do in front of all these Muggles.

He ran.

Harry didn't stop running until he was a few streets away and when he was sure he had lost the last of the mob. Bent nearly in half at the waist as he clutched his side, he panted as he tried to catch his breath. Once he was more steadily breathing, he looked around to see where he was and found himself in front of some kind of electronics store. And on the window of the store was a poster.

A poster of him.

He blinked once, rounded the corner into an alley, and then tried to Disapparate. And completely failed to get to Hogsmeade, which had been his intention.

Hermione was leaning against the counter at work, chatting quietly to one of her fellow workers when she heard some sort of squeal from a news report on the radio. Frowning, she excused herself from her friend as she moved into the back room, sitting by the radio. She was curious, and when she heard a certain name her eyes went wide. Running out, she told Lucy that she would be back soon before heading as fast as she could to the mall in question.

It was mobbed. And she suddenly wished she had the good sense to take the invisibilty cloak with her everywhere. Instead, she simply pulled her hood up, not wanting to use her wand just in case. She kept running, looking everywhere until she saw him down an alley. Glancing around to make sure no one saw her, she soon picked up her pace as she ran into the alley.

"Harry!" She said quietly before she threw her arms around him.

Harry had been turned away from the mouth of the alley, as he waved his wand around furiously and tried to Apparate. He tensed when he heard his name, thinking another mad person had found him, before he turned around and his eyes widened at the sight of Hermione. "Merlin!" He laughed in disbelief at the utter ridiculousness of the situation he found himself in, as she launched herself at him. Managing to stay upright just barely, he wrapped his arms around her and squeezed briefly, before he pulled slightly away.

"Sorry." Somehow, his wand had found itself pressed to her side, and he looked at her apologetically. "Have to be sure it's you. There's some mad things going on and I don't know what or who this Dan is, but I have to be sure it's you." He really did look sorry, but being fresh off the battle he had just been through had left him a little paranoid.

"Before the first Quidditch match of our sixth year, Ron was a wreck and wanted to quit. What did I do to help him? You yelled at me quite a bit for it," he said, smile a little forced as he pulled further away with his wand pointed at her.

She laughed with him, her hold tight. She had missed him so much, had felt guilty more times than she could count for not being back home, helping him. All she wanted to do was keep him in her arms but then she felt it. The press of his wand against her side. Her eyes fell on hers and she was confused for a moment before she remembered everything when they were being him. Making sure each other were really who they said they were.

"Dan is the actor who plays you in the films they have here. We're fictional."

She thought it best to respond to that first before she gave him a smile. He did honestly look sorry for what he was doing. But she didn't blame him. She probably should have done the same but she was too happy to see him.

"You preteneded that you gave him Felix Felicis, made it look that way. He thought he was definitely going to do well and he did. In the end it was me who...cheated. And yes, I yelled quite a lot at you for it and I've already said I'm sorry for that," she said with a small laugh, shaking her head. "I guess we both just wanted him to do what we knew he was capable of doing."

His confusion about who Dan was didn't go away even after she informed him of who he was. It made him even more confused, but he left those questions for later, when he was sure that this was Hermione and not a stray Death Eater trying to bring him down. These were still dangerous times and he had no doubt that it would continue to be so until all the Death Eaters were captured and sent away to Azkaban.

Harry's wand arm came down heavily to his side, as his shoulders slumped in relief and he walked quickly forward to hug her again. "And I'm sorry for not letting you in on it in the first place, but he did have to believe I did it. What better way to prove that than have you shout at me for it?" He asked with a smile, relaxing to the point of not wanting to move because that meant dealing with whatever was going on. He was not ready for any new adventures, not after what they've been through already.

Finally, he pulled away again, though he refused to stop touching her as he left his wand-free hand to grip hers. The reassurance that she was still alive, after finding out Lupin and Fred and all the others who had died during the battle weren't, was needed. "What's going on Hermione? Why aren't we at Hogwarts?"

She grinned as he hugged her again, her arms staying tight around him as she pressed her nose down against his shoulder. Merlin, she really had missed him beyond belief. Especially with everything going on with Ron. She needed Harry here, needed someone that she didn't feel awkwardly about.

"What better way." she agreed with a laugh. "It was a good plan, and it worked in the end. Especially given the fact you didn't use the potion."

She didn't really want him to pull back from the hug but let him, taking his hand and entwining their fingers, squeezing softly. She didn't really want to explain everything going on to him but she knew she had to.

"We haven't been to Hogwarts, remember? We weren't going to go back. And you're in Lawrence, Kansas in America. I was told that we're needed for a battle, it's not the sagest place on Earth here. But you don't have to stay here, it is possible to leave just...not go home. There's a place you can stay, I'll take you there when outside calms down."

"He didn't need it. All he needed was a little confidence," he smiled, wondering where Ron was. He would have expected him to be attached to Hermione's side now that everything was over, but he was strangely not. That had him worried. "He's okay right? Where is Ron anyway?" He had a million questions, one of which was 'How am I in America?', but trying to simultaneously absorb the information and make sense of it was not happening. There was a reason Hermione had been so helpful during their quest. She was the brains and he wasn't about to usurp her now, but understanding everything.

He looked over her shoulder to the mouth of the alleyway to make sure they weren't going to be mobbed again any second, before fixing Hermione with a look. "Have you been Oblivated? Stupid question, you wouldn't know it if you had. Hermoine, we won. We finally went back to Hogwarts for the final battle and we won. I don't understand why we have to fight another one in Kansas. Voldemort's dead. It's all over."

At least, Harry's story was over. The wizarding world would be safe, but that didn't mean that this story in Kansas was over. Far from it. "I don't understand, did some Death Eaters escape? Are we trying to recapture them?" His mind couldn't even begin to fathom that there was another evil trying to take over the world.

"That's all he ever needs." Her breath caught in her throat in a quiet hitch when he questioned on Ron. She was with Adam, and she was happy with him and their relationship, but there was something deep down in her heart that she just couldn't seem to get rid of. "He's fine, as far as I am aware. I expect he's working or with...with his wife."

She knew that it wasn't something Harry would be able to let go easily, but her eyes dropped to the floor and she hoped he wouldn't question her too much. She had to get over this especially when she had someone who she was interested in. But there was soemthing about speaking with Harry that had her speaking more openly.

But she forgot all about it when he said what he was talking about. Her jaw dropped a little before a grin broke out on her face. She couldn't believe it, she knew that they would succeed but to hear it from his lips was something different.

"Harry, people here come from different times. Back home we just left the wedding, I disapparated and found myself here. But we won? We really won?" She said before laughing and throwing her arms around him again. "We won!" She didn't leave his arms at his question, only pulled back a little. "No, it's not Death Eaters. It's...Lucifer and demons. Though I suppose that's just as bad."

"...What?" He can buy time travel and apparently the devil existing, but what got him most was that Ron was married...and not to Hermione. His hands, which had been griping her waist as she explained everything, moved up to her shoulders. Harry didn't quite shake her, but he did stare at her with so much disappointment and confusion that it was probably a little heartbreaking to see. Not only was he scratched, bruised, and tired looking, but he was sad. No one wanted to hear that their best friends weren't together, after everything they've been through. It...just wasn't right. He had precious few good memories and most of them were with Ron and Hermione. To hear that they aren't getting a happy ending together was just too much.

He hated not joining her in her celebratory mood, but the news she was dropping on him was too much of a shock. Because apparently demons existed and what the hell did that even mean? He couldn't do this, not again.

"I...I think I need to sit down," he said, pulling away from her finally, but refusing to let go of her hand. He tugged her over to the side of the alley, before sliding down a brick wall and sitting with a dull thud. His arm hung awkwardly where he was clutching hers with a death grip, but he didn't quite noticed that.

"He was married to someone when I came here. They're happy, that's what matters. And I'm dating someone, so it's okay." She could see the look on his fave and really wanted to try and make it okay. But she knew her eyes weren't exactly shining. Because despite how happy she was with Adam, even when they had been taken to the future she still loved him.

She let him take her hand and lead her to the side, sitting with him when he did. She didn't even think twice before dropping her head to his shoulder. She just wanted her best friend, and despite knowing they won, seeing him unhappy made it impossible for her to feel too happy just yet.

"I'm sorry Harry. I shouldn't have hit you with so much so soon."

"Is it Viktor?" Harry asked because even through time travelling hadn't fazed him much, the thought of being in a world without Hogwarts, without the Burrow, and without all the people they knew was harder to swallow. He knew she said he couldn't go home, but he hadn't realized that she meant it was because their world didn't exist here. "I...this is so confusing." He wanted to tell her that this was all wrong, that she was the one that was suppose to be with Ron, not someone else, but one look at her face and he knew that even though he was feeling pain, she wasn't happy with how things had turned out either. After seven years of being friends with a person, you learned how to tell these things. He simply wrapped an arm around her shoulders and rested his head on top of hers.

For now, he would drop the subject.

"It's not your fault," he said, sighing as he closed his eyes briefly. He felt too old right then, too weary and tired argue against anything now. So he went into his default survivalist mode. It kept him alive this long, he hoped it could do it until he understood what was going on. "You're right to tell me all that. I need to know what's going on. Are we in any danger right now?" Demons and Lucifier...at least he understood Voldemort. He had no idea what was he getting into now.

"No," she responded straight away, laughing softly. "No, you don't know him. His name is Adam. He's...Lovely. Really lovely."

She could feel her cheeks going red. She cared a lot for Adam and whenever she thought on her feelings for Ron she felt guilty. Adam deserved a girl who had a heart that was 100 per cent his. And she would always have a part belonging to Ron. She bit her lip when he said he was confused, nuzzling her head against him. But then she was holding her back and she settled easily against him.

"We're always in danger. I have an amulet that can help protect me against possessions, you'll get one when we go to the complex. And you can be taught everything you need to defend yourself against these things. Don't worry, I'll make sure you settle well and learn everything you need to know."

He didn't like the thought of this Adam already, but that was simply on principle. Seven years and then there was Adam. He knew he should be happy for her, that she seemed to like this bloke, but the best he could manage was a small smile that wasn't entirely sincere at the thought of Adam. And his bias clearly showed on his face, even if he didn't vocalize it. "I'm...glad you think he's lovely. I'm sure he's lovely." Lovely. Sure. That's what Harry thought he was. What kind of stupid name was Adam? Ron was a better name, clearly. Even though he was feeling petty, it wasn't grief or pain. That was always good.

His smile became much more genuine, when she explained how much danger they were in. Sure, it wasn't good what he was hearing, but it was so Hermione to take charge and be prepared. At least that didn't change. "I'm glad I never have to worry when you're around. Clearly you know what to do." He was content to just sit there and be comforted by her warm presence, even if everything was just so wrong, but he knew it would be wiser to get up and start moving.

Harry had experienced being possessed before. He had no desire of wanting a repeat experience.

She could see it on the look of his face. He would be happy for her, but he wouldn't really feel it. She read the books, she knew how much he approved of her being with Ron. But he was, of course, too sweet to mention his dislike of Adam despite not knowing him. "He is lovely. I can be myself with him, he makes me laugh and...well he's just brilliant."

He made her feel like a woman, was what she was going to say, but didn't really think it something she could say to Harry. Ron always was someone that she loved but he had seen her at her best and worst, when she was eleven years old. And she wondered if there was ever a time they wouldn't be awkward with each other.

"I know as much as I can. Adam and his family grew up in this world, his family hunt these things. I've found out everything I can through them and through the things that the people in the complex teach us. I'll tell you everything I know but you really must learn everything. Everything is important."

He knew she was trying to convince him of how great Adam was, even if he hadn't explicitly said anything against him yet. As easily as he could read her, she could read him. It made him smile. "Clearly Adam is brilliant. You wouldn't have given him a second glance otherwise." Obviously Harry didn't think that she should have given him that second glance anyway, but he could acknowledge the fact that she wouldn't be with a complete toad. Cormac excluded, but he didn't really count anyway.

Harry finally patted her shoulder and stood up after disentangling himself from her reluctantly. "I guess we should get going then. Obviously I have a lot to learn." It was the last thing he wanted to do, to get involved in another war, but he would learn what was going on first, before he made any judgment calls. But chances were if Hermione and Ron were here, then he would be sticking around as well. As sick of fighting as he was, he loved them too much to leave them to it themselves. He could do this, for them. Even if they were being stupid and weren't together.

Brushing off any dirt on his jeans that he might have picked up sitting down in an alleyway, Harry offered Hermione a hand. As soon as she took it, he pulled her into a fierce hug. "Regardless of everything else, I'm glad you're here with me."

"I'd love for you to meet him. I'm sure you would get along."

She hoped they would. Ron wasn't so fond of him as far as she could tell, and it made things worse because she really needed her friends to like the man she was with. But it was more so with Harry. He was her best friend, her brother in everything but blood. And she needed him to like Adam as much as he could.

She watched him stand and grinned at that. Yes, he did have a lot to learn and she was happy that he seemed willing to do so. She would have to force him otherwise. She took his hand and laughed straight away when she found herself in his arms again.

"So am I. I've missed you so much."

"Well, let's just get back to this complex of yours first, yes?" He asked, trying to dodge agreeing to meet anyone until he had a chance to speak to Ron and see how serious this marriage of his was. Harry had never seen himself as someone that meddled with people's personal lives, though he managed to do that entirely by accident anyway sometimes, but he would make an exception just this once. His friends obviously needed him to be the smart one for once. Hermione obviously had feelings for Ron, regardless of their current relationship statuses and he had no doubt that his red headed best friend was still in love with Hermione. Maybe it was selfish of him, but he didn't care. He would make them see reason.

He couldn't exactly say that he missed her when he had seen her not too less than a few hours ago, but he clung to her because he needed someone familiar, someone he loved, to make sue he didn't break down. And she must have clung to him because it seemed like she hadn't seen him in awhile. He just nodded and hugged her until they were ready to go.

"Come on, let's go before that mob finds us," he finally said, pulling away only to clasp hands with her. "You think you can do something about my face?" Harry asked, gesturing to his face. It was covered in dry blood and cuts, but he didn't mean for her to heal it. "I don't want to be recognized again...No stinging hexes please!" He was quick to add.

And there was the Harry who often got caught between her and Ron. She nodded a little, at least that was something. She just hoped he wouldn't be too biased when it came to Adam. But Harry knew her to well, he could read everything she done even if it was just in her eyes. And he would probably know how she felt about this situation, no matter her feelings for Adam.

She didn't want to stay away from him so welcomed the hand hold, holding tight. She raised her eyebrow at his request, readying her wand to do what she could to heal it. But then he mentioned stinging hexes. She remembered reading that as well as seeing it in the film and she gave him an awkward smile.

"I...read that I done that. Sorry, I'm sure it seemed like the best I could do." Biting her lip, she tilted her head before pointing her wand at his face. His hair grew until it was similar to the length she had seen it during their fourth year, his face got a little wider and his lips poutier. "Simple transfiguaration charm. It will last until I remove it. Shouldn't be as sore as a stinging hex but it nearly does the same result."

He would try to get along with this Adam of hers, but with all the preconceptions he had of who Ron and Hermione were, he didn't expect anything short of disaster happening. He wouldn't set out to be a jerk, but who knew? Things happened and Harry had a lot of character flaws with tunnel vision perspective when it came to certain things. He had no doubt that this would get messy, but he didn't need to worry about that now.

"I trusted you then and I trust you now," Harry said firmly, squeezing her hand before he squeezed his eyes shut. "Okay, I'm ready." He felt the weird, dull pain that came with the transformation and after a moment, it stopped. When he opened his eyes again, he could see that his glasses had been knocked askew when his face had been widened. He pulled them off and tucked them into his jeans, until he was back to normal. It would probably be better if he had them off anyway, what with that being one less thing for him to be recognized by.

Running his hand through his hair, he attempted a grin and felt his mouth stretch strangely. "How do I look?" If someone really looked, he still looked like himself, but he looked different enough that a quick glance didn't reveal his true identity...or the identity that everyone thought was his.

It meant a lot that he trusted her, even though she knew he always did trust her. She never doubted his trust and she hoped he never doubted the trust she had in him. She loved him, more than she loved many, and with that love came a firm belief in his ability to keep her safe and happy. And trust came with ease after that.

She grinned at his question, laughing a little. It was strange to see him so different but she still saw Harry in there. Taking his hand, she put her wand back in her pocket before squeezing his fingers gently.

"You look fine. Keep a hold of my hand, I'll make sure you get there okay. Hopefully after we get out of the mall we can change you back. But until then, I know how awful that vision of yours is, so let me be your eyes."

No matter what they went through and how many fallouts that occurred between the three of them, Harry knew he could and would trust Ron and Hermione with his life. For as long as they existed, that would never change. It was a comfort in a strange new world to hear those reassuring words from Hermione and he gave her a grin in return.

"I trust you," he simply said, squeezing back and letting her lead them away. In the end, the only thing that he could do was put his faith in her once more and know that everything would work out in its own way.

She smiled and put her hood up before starting to lead him out. She was lucky, it seemed quiet for now, and she kept walking, keeping her eyes on the look out for for any of the mob who had been after Harry. Once they were out the mall and in he more calm street, she pulled him to the side. After all, she rarely had problems walking around the street. Looking back to Harry, she gave him a smile.

"Do you want to stay like this until we get to the complex or will I change you back now?"

She didn't mind either way.

"I reckon we shouldn't risk it. Now that I know that this face can incite riots, we ought to play it safer rather than sorry," Harry said, attempting a grin. It was rather ghastly, but it was an attempt at levity. He needed some now, before he went mental and started to hex everything in sight.

He was almost certain this was what a breakdown felt like. But because he was Harry, he internalized it. It might not happen yet, but it would happen and it would happen in spectacular fashion.

His past mental breakdowns guaranteed that.

"If you're sure."

She couldn't help but laugh at the grin, her hand holding his tightly as she began to walk again. It wouldn't be long until she got back to the complex and she would get in touch with the people at work, saying that she had an emergency and wouldn't make it back. She had a feeling they would assume that anyway after she ran out with the information she gave them.

Soon they reached the complex and before walking in, she faced him again and grinned before pointing her wand at him. Soon he was back to normal. "There. Much better. We're here."

The first thing he did when the modifications were lifted from his face, was to feel his face to make sure it was back to normal. He flinched when he pressed down too hard on some scratches, but he felt normal to his own touch and he had enough faith in Hermione's magical abilities to know that he looked normal again as well.

The second thing he did was look around the building they were in. It was a normal lobby as far as he could tell. He took a moment to find the exits, before he turned back to Hermione.

"So what now?"

"We just need to get your room sorted, and there are things that you are given on arrival to help get you started."

It didn't take long for all of that to happen, and Hermione found it hard to pull her hand from Harry's the entire time. She didn't want to be away from him just yet, not after she managed to get him here. She was almost worried that he would disappear again. Once she had the keys for his room, she tugged his hand over to the elevator.

"It should be nice enough, just need to make it more of a personal home for yourself."
