WHO: Sam, Meg, Ruby, Jo, and Cara. A few NPC demons too.
WHAT: Getting Ruby back; losing Jo.
WHEN: Not too long after the final seal broke.
WHERE: An abandoned house near the church.
RATING: High. Death and violence!

Lucifer was out of his cage. Free. Walking upon the earth, planning out his apocalypse, probably working on bringing forth the end of all humanity in itself in terrible, unimaginable ways. He would kill everyone. Lucifer would lead the front lines of the apocalypse and he would see the world burn. Sam wasn't a moron. He knew that was what they were all in store for. Sam knew that they were all royally screwed. After all, that was partially what Meg had been bitching on about through her happy little rantfest, wasn't it? They had lost in more ways than they could have ever imagined and it was all because he had gotten screwed into breaking the final seal. Lucifer. Sam angrily ran a hand through his hair. He was beyond emotionally and physically shattered at the moment, but that didn't mean that he was going to fall to his knees and call it quits. Maybe it didn't matter anymore. Going out of his way to so much as do anything - think, breathe, feel - maybe it was all pointless now that Sam had personally condemned the entire world to death. But knowing that Ruby was out there, probably hurting and alone because of what Meg had done to her made it impossible for Sam to stand around and bury himself in the fear and self-loathing that he felt. The world was going to end. Fine. But Sam was going to make sure that it didn't end before he got to see Ruby one more time. In a different body with an entirely different face, nothing more than a puff of black smoke - it didn't matter how he saw her. Sam just wanted to find her. Because if the world was ending, he didn't want for Ruby's last moments to be filled with nothing but pain and loneliness. Sam wouldn't let it end that way. Not for her.

Even though his perspective on the situation was wrong, Sam felt very much like the world was going to explode at any second. Lucifer was out. How long would it take for someone as powerful as he to destroy everything? Would he hesitate to do so? Would he do it right away? Would he set the end of the world at a slow, painful pace? Sam didn't know. He knew nothing now, except for how badly he had screwed everyone over. They were all going to die.

I've killed everyone.

Sam climbed out of the old car he and Meg (disguised as Ruby) had driven up to Maryland in earlier. They were no longer at the church. No, they had high-tailed it away from the exploding light and escape of the Devil as fast as they could have managed. Now? Now they were here. At this quiet, abandoned place littered with rusting fences, overgrown grass, and houses that were faded and broken. The neighborhood was an old one. If anyone lived in it before, it seemed to be evacuated entirely now. Sam was more than certain that was because the demons that Meg had been working with had taken it over entirely. No pesky humans to make things difficult. Sam scowled in irritation and moved around to the trunk of the car. Meg was trapped in there. With a Devil's Trap painted right on the inside of the trunk door, there was no way that she could escape without Sam letting her out. Sam reached into his pocket and grabbed the knife he'd stolen from her. Ruby's knife. As far as Sam was concerned, Meg didn't deserve to touch it. She had already disgraced Ruby enough as it was by walking around and pretending to be her for so long. But she'd get hers for that, all right. Once Sam had Ruby back? Meg was going to suffer more than she had in her entire pathetic existence. Sam was determined to make Hell look like a walk in the park for what she had done.

Sam pulled the trunk door open and immediately jabbed the knife at Meg's throat. He hated that she was wearing the face that Sam had become so accustomed to calling Ruby's own. "You're going to cooperate. If you don't? I'm going to stab you in the neck." Sam pressed the blade roughly against her throat to illustrate his point. "Which house?"

"She realized how pathetic you all were," Sam spat out in irritation. He wasn't about to have a heart-to-heart with Meg, of all people. Certainly not one about Ruby and himself. Telling her about his relationship with Ruby would only give Meg some sort of twisted satisfaction. She would find a way to use that information against him somehow, whether it be in the form of taunting him or out of revenge later on down the road. As badly as Sam wanted to kill Meg for all that she had done, they both knew that she wasn't going to be shoved into that never-ending darkness yet. She would return to the pit. And in doing so, Sam was pretty sure that Meg would dig her way right back up to the surface again. It wasn't like she hadn't managed it before. He'd be seeing her again, all right. But next time? It would be the last. "That's just the start of the story. The first page." Sam snatched the cup of blood from Meg's grip. He sniffed at it, mouth twisting in a grimace in response to the scent. It even smelled wrong. "Everything else is too in depth for you to possibly comprehend." Love. Meg would never get it. She wasn't capable.

Sam strode around the side of the car again. He didn't want Meg watching him. Her blood was tainted and wrong; it was what he needed, but it certainly wasn't the demon blood that he wanted. Sam paced the front end of the car, eying the cup of blood in a fixated sense of pure distaste. He had to drink it. Ruby's life depended on it.

Sam placed the cup to his lips and drank the warm blood down.

The taste was wrong. Sam hated it.

He cast the empty cup to the ground and moved for the trunk. "The knife." Sam tilted his head to the side, gesturing to the ground. "Throw it out." He didn't want her trying to carve through the trap suspended above her head. Meg wasn't getting out of this. She was going back to hell. "And if you call me Sammy again?" Sam raised his brows. "Ruby's body or not, I will kill you."

Meg threw the knife, she had no choice but to throw it, she didn't want to call his bluff on killing her, not in the mood he was in. And he told her she didn't understand the disgusting love thing. She didn't want to. He'd drunk her blood down and she wondered would that be enough as she watched him getting ready to rescue his beloved. Her blood, might not have had the taste of Ruby's but it would do the job. Her fellow demons would die. If she'd cared about any of them she might have shed a tear. As it was they were less than her, nothing special, and if they had to die now then so be it. It wasn't like she could have helped them even if she wanted to. Though she did hope Brady got out. If for no other reason than he'd be useful later. A way to get to Sam when all this was done, and even if she had to crawl out of hell again then she'd do it. She had before, countless times. Meg was nothing if not a fighter. Or maybe she was just stubborn.

Yeah that was probably it.

"Fine, 'Sam'. If you insist." she retorted, "You better get going if you want to save her. She'll be hurting if nothing else. Less than she's used to of course but you've been keeping her all safe haven't you. Telling her she'd never have to suffer like that again. Telling her she'd be protected. Good job there Sam" she teased, Yes, teasing from her current position was probably a stupid plan but she did it anyway. It was worth it. Let him go and save his whore. Least if she did that she'd have a way out of the trunk.

Meg wasn't going to stop with the teasing. It was the way she worked. Wasn't going to change, even if he had the blade of the only knife that could possibly kill her pressed to the center of her throat. Sam glared at her long and hard, then reached out and slammed the trunk right in her stupid face. Not her stupid face. It was Ruby's stupid face. Sam stooped over and picked up the knife, carefully burying it inside his pocket before he advanced forward. He'd still need the knife for defense. He might have had a taste of demon blood, but it was nowhere near the level of power that he'd had when he took on Lilith. And, to be honest, it had tasted kind of stale; Sam felt like there was probably something wrong with him because of it. Tainted Meg blood. It was more like poison to him than Ruby's had ever been, but that was probably his mind screwing around with him somehow. All demon blood was probably the same. That didn't mean that it didn't feel like it was different. Ruby was different. Ruby...

Sam quietly slipped around the side of the old house. He slipped inside as carefully as he could and began to sneak his way toward the location that Meg had indicated. There was a chance that she was lying. A very good chance. Maybe she had set him up so that he'd walk into something messy. It didn't matter though - he'd take it all on, if only that meant that he'd find Ruby alive at the end of it all. I'm coming, Ruby, Sam thought desperately, catching sight of his first demon, just hang on a little longer.

Long arm stretching forward, Sam forced the demon that had shouted his name - Winchester - to his knees. He screamed in pain as Sam gripped at him hard. "Where? Where is she?"

Ruby heard it, that one demon. The call of 'Winchester' and then of course the screams. He'd come to get her. He'd come to free her and finally she was able to look up at Brady through a bruised and battered body that wasn't her own and speak "He's going to rip your throat out. And thats before he starts with the powers." she told him, laughing in spite of the pain she was in. "This...all this. It is nothing compared to what he can do to you. Remember Azazel, Alastair. Amaturs compared to him" Oh she knew Brady wouldn't completely believe it, But he wasn't sure. He couldn't be a hundred percent sure, and between Jessica Moore and this, Brady wasn't stupid enough to hang around. He cut her again and kicked the body seemingly taking what little pleasure he could from all of this before he fled the room and probably the house. Scared of Sam.

They were probably right to be. Oh she knew it had happened. Like every demon she'd felt the change. He walked the earth which meant Meg had tricked Sam in her body. And Lilith was dead. The final seal. She'd been a part of it once, and the demons had celebrated by hurting her in every way they knew how. The traitor. The pit whore gone tame. They told her Azazel would be disgusted with her and the worst of it had been that she knew full well he would have been. But Sam was here now, that horror was over and one of the demons was now suffering more than he'd ever felt before.

"Upstairs" it snarled, writhing in pain from what was being done to him. Sam Winchester really did have power over demons, and he wasn't going to die just to stop him getting the traitor back. He wasn't stupid and he liked being alive. "She's upstairs, only four of us, everyone else gone back for orders on what to do with her now you've served your purpose" The demon wanted to say more Wanted to tell him that Ruby was hurting bad and deserved this. But it wouldn't have ended well for him. Not at all.

Upstairs. But in what condition? Sam slammed the demon back into the wall, quickly reaching for the knife that he had carried in with him. It flipped out into his grasp and before the demon had time to comprehend half of what was coming his way, Sam slashed the creatures throat in half and hit the stairs. The body writhed on the floor behind him, demon grasping at his bloody throat as the last few seconds of his pathetic existence ebbed away from him forever. Strategically, Sam set around the corner that met the top of the staircase. There was already a demon there lying in wait, but Sam managed to gut him before he had much of a shot at duking it out with him. It was probably for the best too, as the third demon thought he'd play it clever by jumping Sam from behind. Combining his abilities with his physical strength, Sam grabbed at the demons arm and easily flipped him over his shoulder. The demon hit the floor hard, but was quick to ram a foot into Sam's knee. Stumbling, Sam reached out in frustration and sent the demon spinning back into a closed door. Whether or not it had been locked was unknown to Sam - the door broke upon impact, ripping apart as the demon fell through it.

Silently and angrily, Sam stepped over to the demon and dragged him to his feet. He made him scream. Then Sam dropped him with the knife like the others, leaving him to bleed to death on the ground without a second thought.

There were four demons. Sam had taken out three. What he didn't know was that the fourth had fled the scene by the time he had hit the stairs. Sam went about searching the upper floor as cautiously as he could have in search for a demon that wasn't there, only managing to locate the room in which Ruby was being held captive instead. He was still on alert. One more demon. He couldn't let that bit of knowledge escape him. But there was Ruby. That had to be Ruby, right? She wasn't wearing the same body, but judging from the unfortunate way that the body she was wearing had been treated...

Sam silently moved to her side. He reached out and grabbed her by the chin, lifting it so that he'd be able to meet her gaze. He'd know for sure. All he had to do was look and see. Without waiting for invitation, Sam reached into her mind and sought her out.

Sam.

It was Sam, and he'd found her, she'd heard sounds of fighting, screams of pain and then she'd seen him at the doorway. She'd looked up, managed a smile and suddenly he was with her, right by her side as ever. Ruby instantly gave in to the power as it touched her mind, injured and hurting she may be but Sam was here. He'd found her and he'd come for her. It didn't connect right away that he had to have taken more blood. To have found her, to be doing this to her now. All she could think about was the fight he must have had getting to her, and the feel of his mind meeting the demon that she was underneath this skin. And that's all it was now."Other demons gone. Ran for it. And Sam, this girl's only still here cause of me." she said, she didn't need to thank him, didn't need to tell him she loved him. All of that was being said in other ways as her head rested against his hand and her entire self wrapped around his presence, getting warmth she had sorly missed from it. He was here with her again and she was never ever letting go. "She'll die the second I leave the body. But I should let her go shouldn't I. Let her die...its probably kinder"

She didn't want to think about what state hers was in. What Meg must have done. She'd have wanted to insult her, in every way the bitch knew how. "...Is mine, Is Meg here?" she asked nervously, knowing of course that if she was, then Sam would have her captured enough to restore her. But it was still dangerous. It was still Meg. All the same, her questions asked she clung to Sam, hurting, bloody and bruised on the outside and more than happy to be in his arms again. But nervous for what was to come. And what she knew they'd have to face from here on out. Ruby very much suspected everything up to now would pale in comparison.

Lucifer was free and Sam would blame himself. He always did in these situations. And she was the one who had caused this, she was the one who had lead him far enough down the path that Meg had had it easy. And she was the one who had gotten him hooked on her blood. But now was not the time for self blame or recriminations. There'd be plenty of time for all of that.

"Knew you'd find me" she told him. "I said so, I said every day"

It wasn't difficult to figure out that the demon tucked away inside of the body before him was very much Ruby. The way the darkness within embraced his touch rather than doing the polar opposite was answer enough. Plus, the general feel of it all. Sam knew Ruby. He knew exactly what it was like when they were together. He had found her - albeit a mess - and he was going to get her the hell out of here before that one lucky demon who had managed to escape decided to bring a few friends back. "The girl -" Sam swallowed hard, mind instantly zipping back to the woman he had killed only hours before. A sharp pang of guilt poured through his chest, in which Sam immediately forced his gaze away from Ruby's own. He was ashamed of himself. "It'd probably be for the best. No sense in dragging her through the suffering any longer." Sam squeezed at Ruby carefully, not wanting to damage her any further than she already had been, before he dropped down and focused on getting rid of every object that had kept her in place before he had gotten here. She was free now. Ruby was always free with him.

"Make sure you know who her family is. We'll make a call to the police on the way outta here." That was probably the least that they could have done for her. Sam looked up from his crouched position as he finished tearing through the last bit of the bind she was in. He placed a hand on her knee and turned his attention to the door, expression darkening with anger. "She's in the trunk. If it weren't for your body, she'd be dead by now." Sam turned his focus back on Ruby. He tried for a faint smile, but it didn't pan out. Sam was still reeling; from the murder he had committed, Meg's tricks and games, Lucifer rising, and now seeing Ruby like this. It was too much. "You can always count on me. Told you I'd take care of you." Sam squeezed her knee. "Can you walk?" He'd carry if she couldn't. They both knew that he would, no questions asked. Hopefully once they ditched the body Ruby would be in better physical shape, but Sam didn't really know for certain. Did the damage they put on her get down to the demon on the inside? They must have used something special to screw around with her; those demons would've known that the traditional torture methods didn't work the same way on their own kind, right? Sam frowned. He didn't exactly want to stand around thinking about which ways those sons of bitches had gone about torturing Ruby. He had almost killed them all. Ruby would appreciate the spectacle made of their bodies on the way out, he was sure.

Ruby nodded and looked into the distance for a second, inwardly taking the details from the girls mind. "She's fighting me...I'd forgotten how that felt. I should put her down before I leave the body, she won't feel it then. It'd be better for her. She's only alive cause I'm in here." She waited as patiently as she could as Sam undid the bindings keeping her tied down and finally she was free to fall into his arms, just happy to be with him again. But she was getting there, she had the family. The name, the address. And she'd get there, she just had to tell the girl not to fight anymore. That it'd all be over soon. That no, Ruby couldn't give her her life back but she could let her family know. And finally, mercifuly, the girl stopped fighting. "Got it..." she said simply and tilted her head slightly, she supposed it was murder what she was doing, the second she left the girl would die, but it was the only thing she could do. Even if she kept this body, it'd be a false life for her. "She's subdued. She won't feel it when she goes. I can keep her down until then if we just get out of here now...And I know Sam, I know you'll always take care of me."

Ruby got shakily to her feet, she could walk, though not particularly well, she slipped a arm around his waist and once they moved at least somewhat slowly then it was a step in the right direction. It hurt her deep, not like she'd seen Sam do to demons but they'd gotten to what she was and it had hurt more than she'd felt in a long time. She'd get better. But not in the next few hours. Getting her own body back was definitely a step in the right direction. She really really hated the thought that the little bitch had been riding around in it. It was hers, well, no it wasn't. But it was more hers than Meg's. They walked reasonably slowly toward the door and out to the landing where the body of one of the demons lay. Dead, and it hadn't died happy. Bloodstains still dripping around the body, Ruby looked up at Sam "You killed them..." she asked, not really needing an answer, "just to get me back..."

She wondered had he enjoyed it. She sort of hoped not.

It wasn't easy for him to just stand there and watch Ruby put down the life of an innocent girl. She had suffered through a lot and now, even after Sam had managed to save them, the girl that Ruby was possessing was going to have to die. It wasn't Ruby's fault - no, she hadn't chosen this body - but it was still difficult for Sam to witness nonetheless. He kept his eyes trained on the ground, quietly waiting as Ruby dealt with the tortured soul that she was trapped inside that body with. When she finished, Sam met Ruby's gaze wearily. How many more people were going to have to die tonight? Funnily enough, he could have prevented at least a little bit of the death himself if he hadn't gone on his rampage against those demons trying to get in here. Maybe if he hadn't been so angry at the time he would have. Hell, maybe if Sam wasn't so furious with them now he would have. He was still in that state of mine where they had tortured, stolen, and broken what he loved - Sam, in spite of how much he'd later deny it, had been nothing but rage from the moment he had found out that Meg had tricked him with Ruby's body and onward. He had become more animal than man trying to get to Ruby and, for that, the house was painted with the bodies of Ruby's abductors. Sam could only make himself feel less guilty by thinking that those inside had probably been long since dead with beings capable of such evil wearing them.

"Good," Sam said quietly, putting his arm firmly around Ruby's middle as she climbed to her feet. She wasn't entirely stable, which meant that he'd need to support her on the way out. He gripped her carefully and led Ruby from the house, ignoring the mess that he had created as he went. At Ruby's statement, Sam's jaw hardened and his eyes narrowed in a cold sort of resolve. He didn't reply. Ruby knew the answer without him saying anything.

Finding the car, Sam guided Ruby to the side of the trunk and carefully propped her against the car so that she was able to lean against it. "I'll exorcise her. Then you take the body." Sam didn't wait for Ruby to respond. He walked over to the trunk, popped it open, and glared down at Meg viciously. "Your friends are dead. Lucky for you, I'm good on my word. You're going back. But Meg? Don't think for a second that I'm going to forget what you did to us. When I see you again, you're going to suffer a long, painful death. And I'm gonna enjoy it." That said, Sam cast his arm out and focused on dragging Meg out of Ruby's body. She didn't belong there.

That look in his eyes would probably always bother her, he was tired, possibly of all of it, and she'd just made sure the girl in the body with her would never wake up again. Was he ashamed of her for that? For being what she was? She didn't think so, which meant he was ashamed of himself, and that was worse. A part of her looked around at the carnage he'd caused in her name and was pleased by it. It was deserved and it was good, it was done as revenge for the things they'd put her through since they took her from Sam, and he'd gotten her back, just like he said he would. There was nothing more she could ever ask of the love of her life. But another part of her knew there was nothing here to be proud of. She'd caused him to start down that dark path and now she didn't know if that was it. If he was changed from having freed Lucifer. Well, she'd just have to get him back, wouldn't she?

She let him lead her out of the house almost trying to ignore that hard look in his eyes and focus on what he was saying as he opened the trunk. He was going to exorcise Meg back to hell and she was to take back control of the empty coma girl. It seemed simple enough, but seeing her favoured body in someone elses control. More than that, in Meg's it was more than a little weird, pity she was stuck in a trap, Ruby had more than a few plans for her, but she wasn't getting in Sam's way while he did what he did. She watched as Meg screamed obcenities at them both, not bothering to scream back, she just caught her fellow demons eye before she was expelled from the body and that was enough. Meg knew that the painful death part of their next meeting would involve some alone time with her.

And finally, mercifully, she was gone and Ruby stood back, leaning against the car as she left the body of the poor girl who slumped to the floor, breathing her last few breaths as Ruby slipped back into her own, still trapped body. And with a gasp for air she didn't even need she opened her eyes looking up at Sam, Her eyes, in so far as she could claim to own any meatsuit she owned this body. And everything looked better somehow. "It's me" she said softly, looking over to the now dead girl sadly. "...she never even had a chance did she. Is that what we do to people Sam? Is that what I used to take from people, She was gonna be a journalist you know, she was planning a summer in England"

She shook her head and tried to sit up in the trunk. "...Mind getting me out of here, the legs are cramping"

Meg might have been gone, but Sam wasn't rid of all that pent up emotion that her actions had brought on. He glared at the black cloud of smoke that burned itself into the ground, very much wanting his face to be the last thing that Meg ever saw as she and the world bid each other farewell. Back to the pit. Sam was really hoping some violent, rageful creature down there stuck it to the bitch good. As Ruby abandoned the body that had been condemned to riding out the torture with her, Sam walked around the side of the car and caught it as it fell. He carefully pulled the woman's body to the ground, placing it alongside the vehicle as respectfully as possible as Ruby took up her place in the body that lay within the trunk. Tugging her knife from his jacket, Sam walked back over to the trunk and ran the blade across the symbol that he had drawn there for Meg's containment. The body was Ruby's once more. He didn't need the trap anymore.

He had been fairly quiet throughout the entire process of rescuing Ruby and bringing her out to the car. Even now, Sam barely muttered a few words at a time. There was so much that he wanted to say, but he didn't have the ability to express himself through words. All of this, everything that they had been through, was entirely his fault. He couldn't magically make it go away and sorry would never be enough. Sam clamped his mouth shut tightly and reached in to help Ruby climb out of the trunk. Maybe switching bodies up would help with the physical pain, but even without it there was still so much more that she had to deal with. "Listen, Ruby, I..." Sam shoved his hands into his pockets and looked down at his feet. Was she angry that he hadn't noticed that it hadn't been her this entire time? Was she angry that he had screwed up so badly? Ruby had seemed nothing short of relieved to see him when he came walking through that door, but Sam would have been a fool to assume that she wasn't upset with all the mistakes that he had made. Sam cleared his throat and gestured toward the car. "We should probably get out of here. For all we know, that last demon could be rounding up more of his buddies. We'll take the body with us. Salt and burn it somewhere. Get news out to her family as soon as we can." Business. It was easier to tend to first. "Then..." Then what? Was he going to take her back to Lawrence? Drag her down with him? He couldn't run. Sam refused to. But beyond that, he didn't know what else he was supposed to do. Everything was a mess. "We'll figure the rest out later."

He was being so gentle with the now dead girl, leaning her against the side of the car. It was all confusing in some ways, Ruby was learning to see her as something other than just the meat she'd been trapped in, but a living breathing girl that was dead now because of her. Like so many others over the years, all the lives she had taken, all the potential she'd snuffed out and why that was a bad thing. She was learning, from Sam mostly but from everyone here, how she needed to think about those people. Not that she let herself dwell on it, she thought it might destroy her if she did. She wasn't human, she didn't have the same emotions anymore, not all of them anyway. Though she hadn't thought herself capable of love until Sam. So maybe guilt. Maybe it would find her. "...We don't have to burn her, look at the body, no demons gonna want that. We call, we let them know where it is, make sure your prints aren't on her and then that family have something to bury that still looks like her. I've taken that right from too many families. Lets not take it from this one"

As he broke the trap and helped her out of the truck Ruby had to admit, seeing him like this worried her, bothered her more than she cared to admit. He was supposed to be the strong one wasn't he. "Sssh" she coaxed once she was on her feet, and raised her hand to his cheek lowering his head till he met her gaze. "You don't need to say anything Sam, there's plenty of time for that later, you're here, we're together, and we'll deal with the rest okay?" She couldn't resist giving him a soft kiss, just wanting him to know that whatever had happened, whatever Meg had done. This was her. This was them. And that was what was important. But he was right. They needed to get out of here. "Just get the body and we'll go"

She was still looking at the girl as she spoke, waiting, wondering what exactly she was supposed to think about it all and more worried about Sam than any of it.

"It's not demons I'm worried about," Sam said quietly, "it's her. Think about what she went through." Sam cautiously looked over to Ruby. "Most angry spirits are born from violent deaths. I think it's more than safe to say that her death was unpleasant." He didn't want to deprive the girls family of proper burial rights, but Sam didn't want to condemn them to a life of torture and potential tragedy if their daughter or wife or sister or whoever this was happened to come back as a violent spirit. "I'd like to hand her off to her family more than anything in the world..." Sam uncomfortably looked in the direction of the body. "But we can't. We can't leave anything behind. Was there anything personal on her?" Sam looked over at Ruby, frowning slightly. "A wallet? ID? Anything that they can use to identify her when they find the remains?" He wasn't going to spare any parts. Not even a tooth. Sam knew that it all had to go, otherwise he was leaving someone at risk. Even after raising Lucifer from the pit, Sam was still trying to play by the rules. He was a hunter at heart. He had to.

Of course, Sam didn't necessarily bother sticking to every rule. As the demon before him reached for his face, Sam didn't cringe or retaliate in anger - he leaned into her touch, eyes squeezing shut at the simple gesture. Ruby was being forgiving. God, Sam couldn't understand why she would even want to - but she was. For that, Sam found he was more than grateful. He didn't have the strength to stand there and watch her walk away. That would have been the last of him left. Sam would have been nothing with her gone. He'd have had nothing because God only knew how much Sam had left after all the terrible things that he had done. "Okay," Sam said in an uneven voice, reaching for the hand that covered his cheek. He dragged her fingers to his mouth and kissed them, then grabbed her hand and pulled her close. He didn't need to say it. As Sam looked across at Ruby, the look he gave her spoke for him: thank you. He needed her. She was his strength and if he was to go on after this, Sam was going to need her.

Ruby understood in theory. She'd never waited around to think about the violent spirits, or anything that might have gone with the lives she played fast and loose with when she'd taken their bodies to do such evil with. The families of those girls. Their lives, their deeds. None of it was fair and she was learning that from Sam. He was teaching her what she needed to know to be better, and being around her own kind again Ruby could see how far she had come. But he was right, he couldn't leave her, neither of them could. Ruby thought back to what the body might have contained. "Check the coat I guess, I think she had a wallet. I didn't really think about that kind of stuff, maybe they took it off her. I don't know." That done and Sam now holding her close Ruby could only focus on him. On making him feel better, as much as she could anyway. He needed to feel better. He didn't deserve any of this.

"We're gonna come through this. You know that right? Whatever it takes, whatever we have to do. You and me are stronger than any of this." She could tell just how worried he was, how much the last few days had shaken him, loosing her without knowing it, freeing Lucifer, finding her again. His voice was shaky, his grip on her tight, as if he was scared to loose her again. He loved her and she didn't need any proof of that. He always would, that look in his eyes, the gratitude... he shouldn't have to offer her that. She was the one that was grateful. "I love you Sam. You know that don't you. And I'll be here whatever you need", she stayed close, kissing him on occasion. Holding him. Just being what he needed.
